Characteristic spectral features of the polarized fluorescence of human breast cancer in the wavelet domain

Wavelet transform of polarized fluorescence spectra of human breast tissues is found to localize spectral features that can reliably differentiate normal and malignant tissue types. The intensity differences of parallel and perpendicularly polarized fluorescence spectra are subjected to investigation, since the same is relatively free of the diffusive background. A number of parameters, capturing spectral variations and subtle changes in the diseased tissues in the visible wavelength regime, are clearly identifiable in the wavelet domain. These manifest both in the average low pass and high frequency high pass wavelet coefficients.

Exceptional Polynomials and SUSY Quantum Mechanics

We show that the existence of exceptional polynomials leads to the presence of non-trivial supersymmetry. The existence of these polynomials reveals several distinct isospectral potentials for the Schrödinger equation. All Schrödinger equations having Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials as their solutions, have non-trivial supersymmetric partners with corresponding exceptional polynomials as solutions.

Wavelet-based multifractal analysis of laser biopsy imagery

In this work, we report a wavelet based multi-fractal study of images of dysplastic and neoplastic HE- stained human cervical tissues captured in the transmission mode when illuminated by a laser light (He-Ne 632.8nm laser). It is well known that the morphological changes occurring during the progression of diseases like cancer manifest in their optical properties which can be probed for differentiating the various stages of cancer. Here, we use the multi-resolution properties of the wavelet transform to analyze the optical changes. For this, we have used a novel laser imagery technique which provides us with a composite image of the absorption by the different cellular organelles. As the disease progresses, due to the growth of new cells, the ratio of the organelle to cellular volume changes manifesting in the laser imagery of such tissues. In order to develop a metric that can quantify the changes in such systems, we make use of the wavelet-based fluctuation analysis. The changing self- similarity during disease progression can be well characterized by the Hurst exponent and the scaling exponent. Due to the use of the Daubechies' family of wavelet kernels, we can extract polynomial trends of different orders, which help us characterize the underlying processes effectively. In this study, we observe that the Hurst exponent decreases as the cancer progresses. This measure could be relatively used to differentiate between different stages of cancer which could lead to the development of a novel non-invasive method for cancer detection and characterization.

On Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Phase Transition in Quasi-One Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate

We show that quasi-one dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate under suitable conditions can exhibit a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition. The role played by quantized vortices in two dimensional case, is played in this case by dark solitons. We find that the critical temperature for this transition lies in nano Kelvin range and below, for a wide range of experimentally accessible parameters. It is seen that the high temperature (disordered) phase differs from low temperature (ordered) phase in terms of phase coherence, which can be used as an experimental signature for observing this transition.

A constrained theory of non-BCS type superconductivity in gapped Graphene

We show that gapped Graphene, with a local constraint that current arising from the two valley fermions are exactly equal, shows a non-BCS type superconductivity. Unlike the conventional mechanisms, this superconductivity phenomenon does not require any pairing. We estimate the critical temperature for superconducting-to-normal transition via Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism, and find that it is proportional to the gap.

Probing Tissue Multifractality Using Wavelet based Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analysis: Applications in Precancer Detection

The refractive index fluctuations in the connective tissue layer (stroma) of human cervical tissues having different grades of precancers (dysplasia) was quantified using a wavelet-based multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis model. The results show clear signature of multi-scale self-similarity in the index fluctuations of the tissues. Importantly, the refractive index fluctuations were found to be more anti-correlated at higher grades of precancers. Moreover, the strength of multifractality was also observed to be considerably weaker in higher grades of precancers. These results were further complemented by Fourier domain analysis of the spectral fluctuations.

Differing self-similarity in light scattering spectra: A potential tool for pre-cancer detection

The fluctuations in the elastic light scattering spectra of normal and dysplastic human cervical tissues analyzed through wavelet transform based techniques reveal clear signatures of self-similar behavior in the spectral fluctuations. Significant differences in the power law behavior ascertained through the scaling exponent was observed in these tissues. The strong dependence of the elastic light scattering on the size distribution of the scatterers manifests in the angular variation of the scaling exponent. Interestingly, the spectral fluctuations in both these tissues showed multi-fractality (non-stationarity in fluctuations), the degree of multi-fractality being marginally higher in the case of dysplastic tissues. These findings using the multi-resolution analysis capability of the discrete wavelet transform can contribute to the recent surge in the exploration for non-invasive optical tools for pre-cancer detection.

Travelling wave solutions to nonlinear Schrodinger equation with self-steepening and self-frequency shift

We investigate exact travelling wave solutions of higher order nonlinear Schrodinger equation in the absence of third order dispersion, which exhibit non-trivial self phase modulation. It is shown that, the corresponding dynamical equation, governing the evolution of intensity in the femtosecond regime, is that of non-linear Schrodinger equation with a source. The exact localized solutions to this system can have both super and subluminal propagation belonging to two distinct class. A number of these solitons exhibit chirality, thereby showing preferential propagation behavior determined by group velocity dispersion. Both localized bright and dark solitons are found in complementary velocity and experimental parameter domains, which can exist for anomalous and normal dispersion regimes. It is found that, dark solitons in this system propagate with non-zero velocity, unlike their counterpart in nanosecond regime. Interestingly, subluminal propagation is observed for solitons having a nontrivial Pade type intensity profile.

N-qubit Quantum Teleportation, Information Splitting and Superdense Coding through the composite GHZ-Bell Channel

We introduce a general odd qubit entangled system composed of GHZ and Bell pairs and explicate its usefulness for quantum teleportation, information splitting and superdense coding. After demonstrating the superdense coding protocol on the five qubit system, we prove that '2N +1' classical bits can be sent by sending 'N+1' quantum bits using this channel. It is found that the five-qubit system is also ideal for arbitrary one qubit and two qubit teleportation and quantum information splitting (QIS). For the single qubit QIS, three different protocols are feasible, whereas for the two qubit QIS, only one protocol exists. Protocols for the arbitrary N-qubit state teleportation and quantum information splitting are then illustrated.

In how many ways can quantum information be split ?

We establish a theoretical understanding of the entanglement properties of a physical system that mediates a quantum information splitting protocol. We quantify the different ways in which an arbitrary $n$ qubit state can be split among a set of $k$ participants using a $N$ qubit entangled channel, such that the original information can be completely reconstructed only if all the participants cooperate. Based on this quantification, we show how to design a quantum protocol with minimal resources and define the splitting efficiency of a quantum channel which provides a way of characterizing entangled states based on their usefulness for such quantum networking protocols.

Characterizing Multi-Scale Self-Similar Behavior and Non-Statistical Properties of Financial Time Series

We make use of wavelet transform to study the multi-scale, self similar behavior and deviations thereof, in the stock prices of large companies, belonging to different economic sectors. The stock market returns exhibit multi-fractal characteristics, with some of the companies showing deviations at small and large scales. The fact that, the wavelets belonging to the Daubechies' (Db) basis enables one to isolate local polynomial trends of different degrees, plays the key role in isolating fluctuations at different scales. One of the primary motivations of this work is to study the emergence of the $k^{-3}$ behavior \cite{hes5} of the fluctuations starting with high frequency fluctuations. We make use of Db4 and Db6 basis sets to respectively isolate local linear and quadratic trends at different scales in order to study the statistical characteristics of these financial time series. The fluctuations reveal fat tail non-Gaussian behavior, unstable periodic modulations, at finer scales, from which the characteristic $k^{-3}$ power law behavior emerges at sufficiently large scales. We further identify stable periodic behavior through the continuous Morlet wavelet.

A Fast Statistical Method for Multilevel Thresholding in Wavelet Domain

An algorithm is proposed for the segmentation of image into multiple levels using mean and standard deviation in the wavelet domain. The procedure provides for variable size segmentation with bigger block size around the mean, and having smaller blocks at the ends of histogram plot of each horizontal, vertical and diagonal components, while for the approximation component it provides for finer block size around the mean, and larger blocks at the ends of histogram plot coefficients. It is found that the proposed algorithm has significantly less time complexity, achieves superior PSNR and Structural Similarity Measurement Index as compared to similar space domain algorithms[1]. In the process it highlights finer image structures not perceptible in the original image. It is worth emphasizing that after the segmentation only 16 (at threshold level 3) wavelet coefficients captures the significant variation of image.

Effect of an Impurity on Grey Soliton Dynamics in Cigar-Shaped Bose-Einstein Condensate

In a cigar shaped Bose-Einstein condensate, explicit solutions of the coupled mean-field equations, describing defect-grey soliton dynamics are obtained, demonstrating the coexistence of grey soliton and a localized defect. Unlike the case of dark soliton, where the defect trapping center has vanishing superfluid density, the moving grey soliton necessarily possesses a finite superfluid component at the defect location. The wave vector of the impurity is controlled by the velocity of the grey soliton, which has an upper bound. It is found that the presence of the impurity lowers the speed of the grey soliton, as compared to the defect free case, where it can reach the sound velocity. The grey soliton's energy gets substantially modified through its interaction with the defect, opening up the possibility of its control through defect dynamics.

Supersymmetry and PT-Symmetric Spectral Bifurcation

Dynamical systems exhibiting both PT and Supersymmetry are analyzed in a general scenario. It is found that, in an appropriate parameter domain, the ground state may or may not respect PT-symmetry. Interestingly, in the domain where PT-symmetry is not respected, two superpotentials give rise to one potential; whereas when the ground state respects PT, this correspondence is unique. In both scenarios, supersymmetry and shape-invariance are intact, through which one can obtain eigenfunctions and eigenstates exactly. Our procedure enables one to generate a host of complex potentials which are not PT-symmetric, and can be exactly solved.

$2N$ qubit "mirror states" for optimal quantum communication

We introduce a new genuinely 2N qubit state, known as the "mirror state" with interesting entanglement properties. The well known Bell and the cluster states form a special case of these "mirror states", for N=1 and N=2 respectively. It can be experimentally realized using $SWAP$ and multiply controlled phase shift operations. After establishing the general conditions for a state to be useful for various communicational protocols involving quantum and classical information, it is shown that the present state can optimally implement algorithms for the quantum teleportation of an arbitrary N qubit state and achieve quantum information splitting in all possible ways. With regard to superdense coding, one can send 2N classical bits by sending only N qubits and consuming N ebits of entanglement. Explicit comparison of the mirror state with the rearranged N Bell pairs and the linear cluster states is considered for these quantum protocols. We also show that mirror states are more robust than the rearranged Bell pairs with respect to a certain class of collisional decoherence.

Splitting of quantum information using N-qubit linear cluster states

We provide a number of schemes for the splitting up of quantum information among $k$ parties using a $N$-qubit linear cluster state as a quantum channel, such that the original information can be reconstructed only if all the parties cooperate. Explicit circuits are provided for these schemes, which are based on the concept of measurement based locking and unlocking of quantum information. These are experimentally feasible as they require measurements to be performed only on product basis.

Automated Error Correction For Generalized Bell States

A procedure is developed to automatically correct the bit flip and the arbitrary phase change errors in Generalized Bell states (GBS). The phase and parity characteristics of the GBS are encoded in ancilla bits without altering the state under consideration. The same information is then used to correct the state at a different point, through appropriate unitrary control operations. It is also shown that the distributed/indirect measurements on ancilla can yield the error syndrome. The restricted error correction circuit obtained for N-qubit entangled states of the Bell type, are generalized for the corresponding higher dimensions, thus opening up the possibility of designing of task specific error correction circuits.

Comment on "Comment on 'Supersymmetry, PT-symmetry and spectral bifurcation'"

In "Comment on Supersymmetry, PT-symmetry and spectral bifurcation" \cite{BQ1}, Bagchi and Quesne correctly show the presence of a class of states for the complex Scarf-II potential in the unbroken PT-symmetry regime, which were absent in \cite{AP}. However, in the spontaneously broken PT-symmetry case, their argument is incorrect since it fails to implement the condition for the potential to be PT-symmetric: $C^{PT}[2(A-B)+α]=0$. It needs to be emphasized that in the models considered in \cite{AP}, PT is spontaneously broken, implying that the potential is PT- symmetric, whereas the ground state is not. Furthermore, our supersymmetry (SUSY)-based 'spectral bifurcation' holds \textit{independent} of the $sl(2)$ symmetry consideration for a large class of PT-symmetric potentials.
