Diffraction limit of the sub-Planck structures

The orthogonality of cat and displaced cat states, underlying Heisenberg limited measurement in quantum metrology, is studied in the limit of large number of states. The asymptotic expression for the corresponding state overlap function, controlled by the sub-Planck structures arising from phase space interference, is obtained exactly. For large number of coherent states, uniformly located on a circle, it identically matches with the diffraction pattern for a circular ring with uniform angular source strength. This is in accordence with the van Cittert-Zernike theorem, where the overlap function, similar to the mutual coherence function matches with a diffraction pattern. Interestingly, the convergence to asymptotic limit is quite rapid, reminiscent of the convergence of superposed incoherent sources.

A proposal to generate entangled compass states with sub-Planck structure

We illustrate a procedure to generate a bipartite, entangled compass state, which shows sub-Planck structure. The proposed method uses the interaction of a standing wave laser field, with two, two-level atoms and relies on the ability of this system to choose certain mesoscopic bipartite states to couple with the internal degrees of freedom. An appropriate measurement on the internal degrees of freedom then leads to the entangled state, which shows sub-Planck structures, desired for quantum metrology.

Bending The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle

The celebrated Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle Δx Δp\ge \hbar/2 can allow measurement accuracies less than Δx or Δp. Classical analog of this is known as sub-Fourier sensitivity. We illustrate this phenomenon in a step by step process using the example of compass state, as suggested by Zurek.

Random matrix route to image denoising

We make use of recent results from random matrix theory to identify a derived threshold, for isolating noise from image features. The procedure assumes the existence of a set of noisy images, where denoising can be carried out on individual rows or columns independently. The fact that these are guaranteed to be correlated makes the correlation matrix an ideal tool for isolating noise. The random matrix result provides lowest and highest eigenvalues for the Gaussian random noise for which case, the eigenvalue distribution function is analytically known. This provides an ideal threshold for removing Gaussian random noise and thereby separating the universal noisy features from the non-universal components belonging to the specific image under consideration.

Possible Realization of non-BCS type Superconductivity in Graphene

We show that the gauge field induced due to non-uniform hopping, in gapped graphene, can give rise to a non-BCS type of superconductivity. Unlike the conventional mechanisms, this superconductivity phenomena does not require any pairing. We estimate the critical temperature for superconducting-to-normal transition via Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless mechanism. Possibility of observing the same in ultra cold atomic gases is also pointed out.

Controlling Grey Solitons in a Trap

Experimentally observed grey solitons are analytically extracted from a physically viable \GP equation. Associated Lieb and Bogoliubov modes are calculated for these class of solitons. It is observed that, these nonlinear excitations have strong coupling with the trap at low momenta and hence can be effectively isolated from the Bogoliubov sound modes, which responds weakly to harmonic confinement. This strong coupling with the trap also makes the grey soliton amenable for control and manipulation through both trap modulation and temporal variation of the two-body interaction.

Sinusoidal Excitations in Two Component Bose-Einstein Condensates

The non-linear coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equation governing the dynamics of the two component Bose-Einstein condensate (TBEC) is shown to admit pure sinusoidal, propagating wave solutions in quasi one dimensional geometry. These solutions, which exist for a wide parameter range, are then investigated in the presence of a harmonic oscillator trap with time dependent scattering length. This illustrates the procedure for coherent control of these modes through temporal modulation of the parameters, like scattering length and oscillator frequency. We subsequently analyzed this system in an optical lattice, where the occurrence of an irreversible phase transition from superfluid to insulator phase is seen.

Supersymmetry, PT-symmetry and Spectral Bifurcation

We demonstrate that large class of PT-symmetric complex potentials, which can have isospectral real partner potentials, possess two different superpotentials. In the parameter domain, where the superpotential is unique, the spectrum is real and shape-invariant, leading to translational shift in a suitable parameter by \textit{real} units. The case of two different superpotentials, leading to same potential, yields broken PT-symmetry, the energy spectra in the two phases being separated by a bifurcation. Interestingly, these two superpotentials generate the two disjoint sectors of the Hilbert space. In the broken case, shape invariance produces \textit{complex} parametric shifts.

Multipartite entangled magnon states as quantum communication channels

We explicate conditions under which, the two magnon state becomes highly entangled and is useful for several quantum communication protocols. This state, which is experimentally realizable in quantum dots using Heisenberg exchange interaction, is found to be suitable for carrying out deterministic teleportation of an arbitrary two qubit composite system. Further, conditions for which the channel capacity reaches "Holevo bound", allowing maximal amount of classical information to be encoded, are derived. Later, an explicit protocol for the splitting and sharing of a two qubit entangled state among two parties, using this state as an entangled resource, is demonstrated.

One way quantum bit commitment through classical correlation

A one way partial quantum bit commitment protocol is developed, using states with built-in classical correlation, completely independent of entanglement. It involves concealing information in a set of mutually non-orthogonal states and revealing it through measurements on a set of product states that are mutually orthogonal. Given $2^N$ choices to commit from, the protocol encodes each choice in a $N+1$ qubit state, from $2^N$ non-orthogonal states. A previously agreed upon $N$ qubit state corresponding to each choice, when coupled with the $N+1$ qubit state, yields an element belonging to a set of orthogonal product states, which can be deterministically distinguished. The protocol is demonstrated by implementing it for a `coin-toss' game. A procedure to enhance security of the protocol is explicated, increasing the number of qubits required. Thus a modification is suggested to reduce this required number.

Secure quantum conversation through non-destructive discrimination of highly entangled multipartite states

"Quantum conversation" is a way in which two parties can communicate classical information with each other using entanglement as a shared resource. We present this scheme using a multipartite entangled state after describing its generation through appropriate circuit diagrams. We make use of a discrimination scheme which allows one to perform a measurement on the system without destroying its entanglement. We later prove that this scheme is secure in a noiseless and a lossless quantum channel.

Quantum tasks using six qubit cluster states

The usefulness of the recent experimentally realized six photon cluster state by C. Y. Lu et al. (2007, Nature {3} {91}), is investigated for quantum communication protocols like teleportation, quantum information splitting (QIS), remote state preparation and dense coding. We show that the present state can be used for the teleportation of an arbitrary two qubit state deterministically. Later we devise two distinct protocols for the QIS of an arbitrary two qubit state among two parties and systematically compare their relative merits in terms of classical communication and security. Sixteen orthogonal measurement basis on the cluster state is constructed, which will lock an arbitrary two qubit state among two parties. The usefulness of the state for dense coding is investigated and it is shown that one can send five classical bits by sending only three qubits using this state as a shared entangled resource. We finally show that this state can also be utilised in the remote state preparation of an arbitrary two qubit state.

Non-destructive discrimination of multiparticle cluster states for quantum computation

Discriminating between orthogonal quantum systems without destroying their entanglement is of interest to quantum computation and communication. In this paper, we explicate the schemes for the non-destructive discrimination (NDD) of 16 orthogonal four qubit cluster states and 32 orthogonal five qubit cluster states respectively. This technique will find its applications in various branches of quantum information theory.

Statistical Properties of Fluctuations: A Method to Check Market Behavior

We analyze the Bombay stock exchange (BSE) price index over the period of last 12 years. Keeping in mind the large fluctuations in last few years, we carefully find out the transient, non-statistical and locally structured variations. For that purpose, we make use of Daubechies wavelet and characterize the fractal behavior of the returns using a recently developed wavelet based fluctuation analysis method. the returns show a fat-tail distribution as also weak non-statistical behavior. We have also carried out continuous wavelet as well as Fourier power spectral analysis to characterize the periodic nature and correlation properties of the time series.

Quantum teleportation and state sharing using a genuinely entangled six qubit state

The usefulness of the genuinely entangled six qubit state that was recently introduced by Borras et al. is investigated for the quantum teleportation of an arbitrary three qubit state and for quantum state sharing (QSTS) of an arbitrary two qubit state. For QSTS, we explicitly devise two protocols and construct sixteen orthogonal measurement basis which can lock an arbitrary two qubit information between two parties.

Quantum information splitting using multi-partite cluster states

We provide various schemes for the splitting up of Quantum information into parts using the four and five partite cluster states. Explicit protocols for the Quantum information splitting (QIS) of single and two qubit states are illustrated. It is found that the four partite cluster state can be used for the QIS of an entangled state and the five partite cluster state can be used for QIS of an arbitrary two qubit state. The schemes considered here are also secure against certain eavesdropping attacks.

A Reliable SVD based Watermarking Schem

We propose a novel scheme for watermarking of digital images based on singular value decomposition (SVD), which makes use of the fact that the SVD subspace preserves significant amount of information of an image, as compared to its singular value matrix, Zhang and Li (2005). The principal components of the watermark are embedded in the original image, leaving the detector with a complimentary set of singular vectors for watermark extraction. The above step invariably ensures that watermark extraction from the embedded watermark image, using a modified matrix, is not possible, thereby removing a major drawback of an earlier proposed algorithm by Liu and Tan (2002).
