Chirped chiral solitons in nonlinear Schrödinger equation with self-steepening and self-frequency shift

We find exact solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equation in the presence of self-steepening and self-frequency shift. These include periodic solutions and localized solutions of dark-bright type which can be {\emph{chiral}}, and chirality being controlled by sign of self steepening term. A new form of self phase modulation, which can be tuned by higher order nonlinearities as also by the initial conditions, distinct from nonlinear Schrödinger equation, characterizes these solutions. In certain nontrivial parameter domain solutions are found to satisfy {\emph{linear}} Schrödinger equation, indicating possiblity of linear superposition in this nonlinear system. Dark and bright solitons exist in both anomalous and normal dispersion regimes and a duality between dark-bright type of solution and kinematic-higher order chirping is also seen. Localized kink solutions similar to NLSE solitons, but with very different self phase modulation, are identified.

Minimal classical communication and measurement complexity for quantum information splitting of a two qubit state

We provide explicit schemes for quantum information splitting (QIS) of real or equatorial two qubit states among two parties, through the five particle cluster and Brown states respectively. The schemes introduced are neither fully deterministic nor completely probabilistic and are carried out in the case where, the information that is to be shared is partially or fully known to the sender. We show that, QIS can be accomplished with just two classical bits, as against four classical bits, when the information is unknown to the sender.

Multiresolution analysis of fluctuations in non-stationary time series through discrete wavelets

We illustrate the efficacy of a discrete wavelet based approach to characterize fluctuations in non-stationary time series. The present approach complements the multi-fractal detrended fluctuation analysis (MF-DFA) method and is quite accurate for small size data sets. As compared to polynomial fits in the MF-DFA, a single Daubechies wavelet is used here for de-trending purposes. The natural, built-in variable window size in wavelet transforms makes this procedure well suited for non-stationary data. We illustrate the working of this method through the analysis of binomial multi-fractal model. For this model, our results compare well with those calculated analytically and obtained numerically through MF-DFA. To show the efficacy of this approach for finite data sets, we also do the above comparison for Gaussian white noise time series of different size. In addition, we analyze time series of three experimental data sets of tokamak plasma and also spin density fluctuations in 2D Ising model.

Difference in nature of correlation between NASDAQ and BSE indices

We apply a recently developed wavelet based approach to characterize the correlation and scaling properties of non-stationary financial time series. This approach is local in nature and it makes use of wavelets from the Daubechies family for detrending purpose. The built-in variable windows in wavelet transform makes this procedure well suited for the non-stationary data. We analyze daily price of NASDAQ composite index for a period of 20 years, and BSE sensex index, over a period of 15 years. It is found that the long-range correlation, as well as fractal behavior for both the stock index values differ from each other significantly. Strong non-statistical long-range correlation is observed in BSE index, whose removal revealed a Gaussian random noise character for the corresponding fluctuation. The NASDAQ index, on the other hand, showed a multifractal behavior with long-range statistical correlation.

On Estimation of Hurst Scaling Exponent through Discrete Wavelets

We study the scaling behavior of the fluctuations, as extracted through wavelet coefficients based on discrete wavelets. The analysis is carried out on a variety of physical data sets, as well as Gaussian white noise and binomial multi-fractal model time series and the results are compared with continuous wavelet based average wavelet coefficient method. It is found that high-pass coefficients of wavelets, belonging to the Daubechies family are quite good in estimating the true power in the fluctuations in a non-stationary time series. Hence, the fluctuation functions based on discrete wavelet coefficients find the Hurst scaling exponents accurately.

Perfect teleportation and superdense coding through an asymmetric five qubit state

We explicate an example of the so called Task oriented Maximally Entangled states (TMES) in the context of teleportation and superdense coding. In physical situation, this state can emerge from decoherence of more entangled state or may be prepared for the purpose at hand, with less entanglement resource. We find that a variant of the Brown state can be utilized for perfect teleportation of single and two qubit states. In case of superdense coding, it is observed that five cbits can be transmitted by sending only three qubits.

Perfect Teleportation, Quantum state sharing and Superdense Coding through a Genuinely Entangled Five-qubit State

We investigate the usefulness of a recently introduced five qubit state by Brown $\it et al. \normalfont$ \cite{Brown} for quantum teleportation, quantum state sharing and superdense coding. It is shown that this five-qubit state can be utilized for perfect teleportation of arbitrary single and two qubit systems. We devise various schemes for quantum state sharing of an arbitrary single and two particle state via cooperative teleportation. We later show that this state can be used for superdense coding as well. It is found that five classical bits can be sent by sending only three quantum bits.

Sinusoidal excitations in reduced Maxwell-Duffing model

Sinusoidal wave solutions are obtained for reduced Maxwell-Duffing equations describing the wave propagation in a non-resonant atomic medium. These continuous wave excitations exist when the medium is initially polarized by an electric field. Other obtained solutions include both mono-frequency and cnoidal waves.

Fermion Number Fractionization

Solitons emerge as non-perturbative solutions of non-linear wave equations in classical and quantum theories. These are non-dispersive and localised packets of energy-remarkable properties for solutions of non-linear differential equations. In presence of such objects, the solutions of Dirac equation lead to the curious phenomenon of "fractional fermion number", a number which under normal conditions takes strictly integral values. In this article, we describe this accidental discovery and its manifestation in polyacetylene chains, which has lead to the development of organic conductors.

Entanglement induced Sub-Planck structures

We study Wigner function of a system describing entanglement of two cat-states. Quantum interferece arising due to entanglement is shown to produce sub-Planck structures in the phase-space plots of the Wigner function. Origin of these structures in our case depends on entanglement unlike those in Zurek \cite{Zurek}. It is argued that the entangled cat-states are better suited for carrying out precision measurements.

Complex solitons with power law behaviour in Bose-Einstein condensates near Feshbach resonance

Complex, localized stable solitons, characterized by a power law behaviour, are found for a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate near Feshbach resonance. Both dark and bright solitons can be excited in the experimentally allowed parameter domain, when two and three-body interactions are respectively repulsive and attractive. These solutions are obtained for non-zero chemical potential, unlike their unstable real counterparts which exist in the limit of vanishing $μ$. The dark solitons travel with constant speed, which is quite different from the Lieb mode, where profiles with different speeds, bounded above by sound velocity can exist for specified interaction strengths.

Entanglement of superposition and pair coherent states

Entanglement characteristics of a pair coherent state is studied using entanglement of superposition. It is demonstrated only few states in the expansion of a pair coherent state, in a harmonic oscillator basis, contribute significantly to the entanglement. We also study a case of two superposed pair coherent states

Features in the Primordial Spectrum from WMAP: A Wavelet Analysis

Precise measurements of the anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background enable us to do an accurate study on the form of the primordial power spectrum for a given set of cosmological parameters. In a previous paper (Shafieloo and Souradeep 2004), we implemented an improved (error sensitive) Richardson-Lucy deconvolution algorithm on the measured angular power spectrum from the first year of WMAP data to determine the primordial power spectrum assuming a concordance cosmological model. This recovered spectrum has a likelihood far better than a scale invariant, or, `best fit' scale free spectra (Δln L = 25 w.r.t. Harrison Zeldovich, and, Δln L = 11 w.r.t. power law with n_s=0.95). In this paper we use Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) to decompose the local features of the recovered spectrum individually to study their effect and significance on the recovered angular power spectrum and hence the likelihood. We show that besides the infra-red cut off at the horizon scale, the associated features of the primordial power spectrum around the horizon have a significant effect on improving the likelihood. The strong features are localised at the horizon scale.

Characterizing and modeling cyclic behavior in non-stationary time series through multi-resolution analysis

A method based on wavelet transform and genetic programming is proposed for characterizing and modeling variations at multiple scales in non-stationary time series. The cyclic variations, extracted by wavelets and smoothened by cubic splines, are well captured by genetic programming in the form of dynamical equations. For the purpose of illustration, we analyze two different non-stationary financial time series, S&P CNX Nifty closing index of the National Stock Exchange (India) and Dow Jones industrial average closing values through Haar, Daubechies-4 and continuous Morlet wavelets for studying the character of fluctuations at different scales, before modeling the cyclic behavior through GP. Cyclic variations emerge at intermediate time scales and the corresponding dynamical equations reveal characteristic behavior at different scales.

Controlling pulse propagation in optical fibers through nonlinearity and dispersion management

In case of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with designed group velocity dispersion, variable nonlinearity and gain/loss; we analytically demonstrate the phenomenon of chirp reversal crucial for pulse reproduction. Two different scenarios are exhibited, where the pulses experience identical dispersion profiles, but show entirely different propagation behavior. Exact expressions for dynamical quasi-solitons and soliton bound-states relevant for fiber communication are also exhibited.

Spectral fluctuation characterization of random matrix ensembles through wavelets

A recently developed wavelet based approach is employed to characterize the scaling behavior of spectral fluctuations of random matrix ensembles, as well as complex atomic systems. Our study clearly reveals anti-persistent behavior and supports the Fourier power spectral analysis. It also finds evidence for multi-fractal nature in the atomic spectra. The multi-resolution and localization nature of the discrete wavelets ideally characterizes the fluctuations in these time series, some of which are not stationary.
