Low-temperature magnetism and spin dynamics in the disordered triangular-lattice Yb$^{3+}$ compound LiCaYb$_5$(BO$_3$)$_6$

The interplay between geometric frustration, spin--orbit coupling, and structural disorder can give rise to unconventional magnetic ground states in rare-earth triangular-lattice magnets. We report low-temperature magnetic and $^7$Li NMR investigations of the disordered triangular-lattice compound LiCaYb$_5$(BO$_3$)$_6$ (LCYBO). Rietveld refinement confirms a hexagonal $P6_522$ structure with partial Ca/Yb antisite disorder and fractional Li occupancy. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements indicate a well-isolated effective $J_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ Kramers doublet with weak antiferromagnetic interactions ($θ_{\mathrm{CW}} \approx -0.54$~K). The specific heat reveals a weak anomaly near 0.43 K, suggesting the development of short-range correlated magnetism rather than conventional long-range order. $^7$Li NMR spectra broaden strongly upon cooling, consistent with increasingly inhomogeneous internal magnetic fields. The spin-lattice relaxation exhibits two relaxation components consistent with disorder-induced distributions of local magnetic environments arising from antisite disorder and competing exchange pathways. Our results establish LCYBO as a structurally disordered frustrated triangular-lattice magnet with correlated low-energy spin dynamics.

Thermodynamic signatures of a field-induced ordered intermediate phase in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

The honeycomb cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has recently been proposed as a candidate material for hosting field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) behavior. Here, we present a comprehensive thermodynamic study of its low-temperature, high-field phase diagram using magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements down to 1 K. In zero field, we observe a weak residual moment that provides further insight into the nature of the magnetic ground state. For in-plane magnetic fields ($B \parallel a^*$), we identify three field-induced transitions at $B_{c1} \simeq 6$ T, $B_{c2} \simeq 7.8$ T, and $B_{c3} \simeq 10.4$ T. The magnetic Grüneisen parameter and specific heat reveal clear thermodynamic signatures of these successive phase transitions enclosing two intermediate phases. Contrary to expectations for a field-induced QSL, the phase between $B_{c2}$ and $B_{c3}$ lacks enhanced magnetic entropy but instead shows behavior consistent with a distinct ordered state. Above $B_{c3}$, the absence of additional anomalies indicates a crossover to a conventional spin-polarized regime. Our results place stringent thermodynamic constraints on the proposed QSL scenario in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, calling for further microscopic investigations to establish the precise nature of the field-induced phases.

Anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in the honeycomb magnet Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$

We present magnetization and dilatometry measurements on the honeycomb cobaltate Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and map out its detailed field-temperature phase diagram down to sub-Kelvin temperatures. Our data for in-plane magnetic fields show a strongly anisotropic $c^{*}$-axis lattice response, which is dominated by the variation of Co--O--Co bond angles according to \textit{ab initio} calculations. At $T = 0.4$~K, the magnetization $M(B)$ exhibits step-like features that are also highly anisotropic. In the case of $B \parallel b$, a small hysteresis observed around the second field-induced magnetic transition ($B_{c2}$) indicates its first-order character, whereas divergence of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter at $B_{c2}$ is suppressed upon cooling and signals the absence of quantum critical behavior upon entering the field-polarized state. None of our thermodynamic measurements provide evidence for a field-induced quantum spin liquid state near or above $B_{c2}$.

Trigonal distortion in the Kitaev candidate honeycomb magnet BaCo2(AsO4)2

We conducted x-ray absorption (XAS) and magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements at the Co $L_{2,3}$ edges on single crystals of the Kitaev candidate honeycomb lattice compound BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$. The measurements employed the inverse partial fluorescence yield technique, which is ideal for acquiring reliable x-ray absorption spectra from highly insulating samples, enabling precise quantitative analysis. Our experimental results revealed a significant linear dichroic signal, indicating strong trigonal distortion in the CoO$_{6}$ octahedra in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$. We performed a detailed analysis of the experimental XAS and XMCD spectra using a full-multiplet configuration-interaction cluster model. This analysis unveiled that the $t_{2g}$ hole density is predominantly localized in the $a_{1g}$ orbital. Through XMCD sum rules and theoretical calculations, we quantified both the spin and orbital magnetic moments. Our study demonstrates that the local electronic structure of the CoO$_{6}$ octahedra displays an effective trigonal distortion of approximately $-0.114$ eV. This distortion is larger than the Co $3d$ spin-orbit coupling constant, emphasizing the crucial impact of local structural distortions on the electronic and magnetic properties of BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$.

Intermediate field-induced phase of the honeycomb magnet BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

We use magnetometry, calorimetry, and high-resolution capacitive dilatometry, as well as single-crystal neutron diffraction to explore temperature-field phase diagram of the anisotropic honeycomb magnet BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4)_2$. Our data reveal four distinct ordered states observed for in-plane magnetic fields. Of particular interest is the narrow region between 0.51 and 0.55 T that separates the up-up-down order from the fully polarized state and coincides with the field range where signatures of the spin-liquid behavior have been reported. We show that magnetic Bragg peaks persist in this intermediate phase, thus ruling out its spin-liquid nature. However, the simultaneous nonmonotonic evolution of nuclear Bragg peaks suggests the involvement of the lattice, witnessed also in other regions of the phase diagram where large changes in the sample length are observed upon entering the magnetically ordered states. Our data highlight the importance of lattice effects in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4)_2$.

Magnetic versus nonmagnetic polymorphs of RuBr$_3$ under pressure

Pressure evolution of the crystal structure and magnetism of the honeycomb $α$-RuBr$_3$ is studied using high-pressure x-ray diffraction, magnetometry, and density-functional band-structure calculations. Hydrostatic compression transforms antiferromagnetic $α$-RuBr$_3$ ($R\bar 3$) into paramagnetic $α'$-RuBr$_3$ ($P\bar 1$) where short Ru-Ru bonds cause magnetism collapse above 1.3 GPa at 0 K and 2.5 GPa at 295 K. Below this critical pressure, the Néel temperature of $α$-RuBr$_3$ increases with the slope of 1.8 K/GPa. Pressure tunes $α$-RuBr$_3$ away from the Kitaev limit, whereas increased third-neighbor in-plane coupling and interlayer coupling lead to a further stabilization of the collinear zigzag state. Both $α$- and $α'$-RuBr$_3$ are metastable at ambient pressure, but their transformation into the thermodynamically stable $β$-polymorph is kinetically hindered at room temperature.

Repulsive Tomonaga-Luttinger Liquid in Quasi-one-dimensional Alternating Spin-$1/2$ Antiferromagnet NaVOPO$_4$

We probe the magnetic field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) state in the bond-alternating spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) chain compound NaVOPO$_4$ using thermodynamic as well as local $μ$SR and $^{31}$P NMR probes down to milli-K temperatures in magnetic fields up to 14~T. The $μ$SR and NMR relaxation rates in the gapless TLL regime decay slowly following characteristic power-law behaviour, enabling us to directly determine the interaction parameter $K$ as a function of the magnetic field. These estimates are cross-checked using magnetization and specific heat data. The field-dependent $K$ lies in the range of $0.4 < K < 1$ and indicates repulsive nature of interactions between the spinless fermions, in line with the theoretical predictions. This renders NaVOPO$_4$ the first experimental realization of TLL with repulsive fermionic interactions in hitherto studied $S=1/2$ bond-alternating AFM-AFM chain compounds.

Quantum magnetism of ferromagnetic spin dimers in $α$-KVOPO$_4$

Magnetism of the spin-$\frac12$ $α$-KVOPO$_4$ is studied by thermodynamic measurements, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, and density-functional band-structure calculations. Ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{\rm CW}\simeq 15.9$ K and the saturation field of $μ_0H_s\simeq 11.3$ T suggest the predominant ferromagnetic coupling augmented by a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange that leads to a short-range order below 5 K and the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}\simeq 2.7$ K in zero field. Magnetic structure with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=(0,\frac12,0)$ and the ordered magnetic moment of 0.58 $μ_B$ at 1.5 K exposes a non-trivial spin lattice where strong ferromagnetic dimers are coupled antiferromagnetically. The reduction in the ordered magnetic moment with respect to the classical value (1 $μ_{\rm B}$) indicates sizable quantum fluctuations in this setting, despite the predominance of ferromagnetic exchange. We interpret this tendency toward ferromagnetism as arising from the effective orbital order in the folded chains of the VO$_6$ octahedra.

Two types of alternating spin-$\frac12$ chains and their field-induced transitions in $\varepsilon$-LiVOPO$_4$

Thermodynamic properties, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, and density-functional band-structure calculations for $\varepsilon$-LiVOPO$_4$ are reported. This quantum magnet features a singlet ground state and comprises two types of alternating spin-$\frac12$ chains that manifest themselves by the double maxima in the susceptibility and magnetic specific heat, and by the two-step magnetization process with an intermediate $\frac12$-plateau. From thermodynamic data and band-structure calculations, we estimate the leading couplings of $J_1\simeq 20$ K and $J_2\simeq 60$ K and the alternation ratios of $α_1=J_1'/J_1\simeq 0.6$ and $α_2=J_2'/J_2\simeq 0.3$ within the two chains, respectively. The zero-field spin gap $Δ_0/k_{\rm B}\simeq 7.3$ K probed by thermodynamic and NMR measurements is caused by the $J_1$-$J_1'$ spin chains and can be closed in the applied field of $μ_{0}H_{\rm c1}\simeq 5.6$ T, giving rise to a field-induced long-range order. The NMR data reveal predominant three-dimensional spin-spin correlations at low temperatures. Field-induced magnetic ordering transition observed above $H_{c1}$ is attributed to the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons in the sublattice formed by the $J_1$-$J_1'$ chains with weaker exchange couplings.

Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons close to the quantum critical point in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnet NaVOPO$_4$

Structural and magnetic properties of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-$1/2$ compound NaVOPO$_4$ are explored by x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance measurements, as well as complementary \textit{ab initio} calculations. Whereas magnetic susceptibility of NaVOPO$_4$ may be compatible with the gapless uniform spin chain model, detailed examination of the crystal structure reveals a weak alternation of the exchange couplings with the alternation ratio $α\simeq 0.98$ and the ensuing zero-field spin gap $Δ_{0}/k_{\rm B} \simeq 2.4$~K directly probed by field-dependent magnetization measurements. No long-range order is observed down to 50\,mK in zero field. However, applied fields above the critical field $H_{c1}\simeq 1.6$\,T give rise to a magnetic ordering transition with the phase boundary $T_{\rm N} \propto {(H - H_{\rm c1})^{\frac{1}ϕ}}$, where $ϕ\simeq 1.8$ is close to the value expected for Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons. With its weak alternation of the exchange couplings and small spin gap, NaVOPO$_4$ lies close to the quantum critical point.

Observation of Topological Hall Effect and Signature of Room Temperature Antiskyrmions in Mn-Ni-Ga D2d Heusler magnets

Topologically stable nontrivial spin structures, such as skyrmions and antiskyrmions, display a large topological Hall effect owing to their quantized topological charge. Here, we present the finding of a large topological Hall effect beyond room temperature in the tetragonal phase of a Mn-Ni-Ga based ferrimagnetic Heusler shape memory alloy system. The origin of the field induced topological phase, which is also evidenced by the appearance of dips in the ac-susceptibility measurements, is attributed to the presence of magnetic antiskyrmions driven by D2d symmetry of the inverse Heusler tetragonal phase. Detailed micromagnetic simulations asserts that the antiskyrmionic phase is stabilized as a result of interplay among inhomogeneous Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, the Heisenberg exchange, and the magnetic anisotropy energy. The robustness of the present result is demonstrated by stabilizing the antiskyrmion hosting tetragonal phase up to a temperature as high as 550 K by marginally varying the chemical composition, thereby driving us a step closer to the realization of ferrimagnetic antiskyrmion based racetrack memory.
