Uncovering doubly charged scalars with dominant three-body decays using machine learning

We propose a deep learning-based search strategy for pair production of doubly charged scalars undergoing three-body decays to $W^+ t\bar b$ in the same-sign lepton plus multi-jet final state. This process is motivated by composite Higgs models with an underlying fermionic UV theory. We demonstrate that for such busy final states, jet image classification with convolutional neural networks outperforms standard fully connected networks acting on reconstructed kinematic variables. We derive the expected discovery reach and exclusion limit at the high-luminosity LHC.

Supernova Axion Emissivity with $Δ(1232)$ Resonance in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory

In this paper, we evaluate the energy loss rate of supernovae induced by the axion emission process $π^- + p \to n + a$ with the $Δ(1232)$ resonance in the heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory for the first time. Given the axion-nucleon-$Δ$ interactions, we include the previously ignored $Δ$-mediated graphs to the $π^- + p \to n + a$ process. In particular, the $Δ^0$-mediated diagram can give a resonance contribution to the supernova axion emission rate when the center-of-mass energy of the pion and proton approaches the $Δ(1232)$ mass. With these new contributions, we find that for the typical supernova temperatures, compared with the earlier work with the axion-nucleon (and axion-pion-nucleon contact) interactions, the supernova axion emissivity can be enhanced by a factor of $\sim$4(2) in the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov model and up to a factor of $\sim$5(2) in the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky model with small $\tanβ$ values. Remarkably, we notice that the $Δ(1232)$ resonance gives a destructive contribution to the supernova axion emission rate at high supernova temperatures, which is a nontrivial result in this study.

Reshuffled Strongly Interacting Massive Particle Dark Matter

In this work, we reanalyze the multi-component strongly interacting massive particle (mSIMP) scenario using an effective operator approach. As in the single-component SIMP case, the total relic abundance of mSIMP dark matter (DM) is determined by the coupling strengths of $3 \to 2$ processes achieved by a five-point effective operator. Intriguingly, we notice that there is an irreducible $2 \to 2$ process induced by the corresponding five-point interaction in the dark sector, which would reshuffle the mass densities of SIMP DM after the chemical freeze-out. We dub this DM scenario as reshuffled SIMP ($r$SIMP). Given this observation, we then numerically solve the coupled Boltzmann equations including the $3 \to 2$ and $2 \to 2$ processes to get the correct yields of $r$SIMP DM. It turns out that the masses of $r$SIMP DM must be nearly degenerate for them to contribute sizable abundances. On the other hand, we also introduce effective operators to bridge the dark sector and visible sector via a vector portal coupling. Notably, we find that the reshuffled mechanism in the $r$SIMP scenario is sensitive to the size of the DM self-interacting cross section.

Scalar and Fermion Two-component SIMP Dark Matter with an Accidental $\mathbb{Z}^{}_4$ Symmetry

In this paper, we construct for the first time a two-component strongly interacting massive particles (SIMP) dark matter (DM) model, where a complex scalar and a vector-like fermion play the role of the SIMP DM candidates. These two particles are stable due to an accidental $\mathbb{Z}^{}_4$ symmetry after the breaking of a $\text{U}(1)^{}_\textsf{D}$ gauge symmetry. By introducing one extra complex scalar as a mediator between the SIMP particles, this model can have $3 \to 2$ processes that determine the DM relic density. On the other hand, the SIMP DM particles can maintain kinetic equilibrium with the thermal bath until the DM freeze-out temperature via the $\text{U}(1)^{}_\textsf{D}$ gauge couplings. Most importantly, we find an unavoidable two-loop induced $2 \to 2$ process tightly connecting to the $3 \to 2$ process that would redistribute the SIMP DM number densities after the chemical freeze-out of DM. Moreover, this redistribution would significantly modify the predictions of the self-interacting cross section of DM compared with other SIMP models. It is crucial to include the two-loop induced $2 \to 2$ annihilations to obtain the correct DM phenomenology.

Addendum to "Invisible Higgs decay width versus dark matter direct detection cross section in Higgs portal dark matter models"

This article is an addendum to Ref.~\cite{Baek:2014jga}. Here, we discuss the invisible Higgs decay width $Γ_{h}^{\rm inv}$ in the Higgs portal vector dark matter (VDM) model in the limit $m_V \rightarrow 0^+$. In the effective field theory (EFT) approach where the VDM mass is attributed to the Stückelberg mechanism, $( Γ_{h}^{\rm inv} )_{\rm EFT}$ is divergent, which is unphysical and puzzling. On the other hand $( Γ_{h}^{\rm inv} )_{\rm UV}$ becomes finite in a UV completion, where the VDM mass is generated by the dark Higgs mechanism. Then we can take the limit $m_V \rightarrow 0^+$ by taking either {\it (i)} the dark gauge coupling $g_X \rightarrow 0^+$ with a fixed dark Higgs vacuum expectation value $v_Φ$, or {\it (ii)} $v_Φ\to 0^+$ with a fixed $g_X$. Such a difference in the behavior of $Γ_{h}^{\rm inv}$ in the massless VDM limit demonstrates another limitation of EFT for the Higgs portal VDM, and the importance of gauge-invariant and renormalizable models for the Higgs portal VDM.

Leveraging Quantum Annealer to identify an Event-topology at High Energy Colliders

With increasing energy and luminosity available at the Large Hadron collider (LHC), we get a chance to take a pure bottom-up approach solely based on data. This will extend the scope of our understanding about Nature without relying on theoretical prejudices. The required computing resource, however, will increase exponentially with data size and complexities of events if one uses algorithms based on a classical computer. In this letter we propose a simple and well motivated method with a quantum annealer to identify an event-topology, a diagram to describe the history of particles produced at the LHC. We show that a computing complexity can be reduced significantly to the order of polynomials which enables us to decode the "Big" data in a very clear and efficient way. Our method achieves significant improvements in finding a true event-topology, more than by a factor of two compared to a conventional method.

Conformal Portal to Dark Matter

We propose a new portal coupling to dark matter by taking advantage of the nonminimally coupled portal sector to the Ricci scalar. Such a portal sector conformally induces couplings to the trace of the energy-momentum tensor of matters including highly secluded dark matter particles. The portal coupling is so feeble that dark matter is produced by freeze-in processes of scatterings and/or the decay of the mediator. We consider two concrete realizations of the portal: conformally induced Higgs portal and conformally induced mediator portal. The former case is compatible with the Higgs inflation, while the latter case can be tested by dark matter direct detection experiments.

A multi-component SIMP model with $U(1)_X \rightarrow Z_2 \times Z_3$

Multi-component dark matter scenarios are studied in the model with $U(1)_X$ dark gauge symmetry that is broken into its product subgroup $Z_2 \times Z_3$ á la Krauss-Wilczek mechanism. In this setup, there exist two types of dark matter fields, $X$ and $Y$, distinguished by different $Z_2 \times Z_3$ charges. The real and imaginary parts of the $Z_2$-charged field, $X_R$ and $X_I$, get different masses from the $U(1)_X$ symmetry breaking. The field $Y$, which is another dark matter candidate due to the unbroken $Z_3$ symmetry, belongs to the Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (SIMP)-type dark matter. Both $X_I$ and $X_R$ may contribute to $Y$'s $3\rightarrow 2$ annihilation processes, opening a new class of SIMP models with a local dark gauge symmetry. Depending on the mass difference between $X_I$ and $X_R$, we have either two-component or three-component dark matter scenarios. In particular two- or three-component SIMP scenarios can be realised not only for small mass difference between $X$ and $Y$, but also for large mass hierarchy between them, which is a new and unique feature of the present model. We consider both theoretical and experimental constraints, and present four case studies of the multi-component dark matter scenarios.

Proceedings of the second MadAnalysis 5 workshop on LHC recasting in Korea

We document the activities performed during the second MadAnalysis 5 workshop on LHC recasting, that was organised in KIAS (Seoul, Korea) on February 12-20, 2020. We detail the implementation of 12 new ATLAS and CMS searches in the MadAnalysis 5 Public Analysis Database, and the associated validation procedures. Those searches probe the production of extra gauge and scalar/pseudoscalar bosons, supersymmetry, seesaw models and deviations from the Standard Model in four-top production.

Dark Matter Bound State Formation in Fermionic $Z_2$ DM model with Light Dark Photon and Dark Higgs Boson

If fermionic dark matter (DM) is stabilized by dark $U(1)$ gauge symmetry that is spontaneously broken into its subgroup $Z_2$, the particle contents of the model becomes very rich: DM and excited DM, both of them are Majorana fermions, as well as two dark force mediators, dark photon and dark Higgs boson are naturally present due to the underlying dark gauge symmetry. In this paper, we study the DM bound state formation processes within this scenario, assuming both dark photon and dark Higgs are light mediators and including the effects of excited DM. The Goldstone boson contributions to the potential matrix in the Schrödinger equations are found to be important. The emissions of a longitudinal vector boson (or somehow equivalently a Goldstone boson) during the DM bound state formations are crucial to induce a significant reannihilation process, reducing the dark matter relic abundance. Most of the stringent constraints for this kind of dark matter considered in the literature are simply evaded.

Search for sterile neutrino with light gauge interactions: recasting collider, beam-dump, and neutrino telescope searches

We investigate features of the sterile neutrinos in the presence of a light gauge boson $X^μ$ that couples to the neutrino sector. The novel bounds on the active-sterile neutrino mixings $| U_{\ell 4} |^2$, especially for tau flavor ($l = τ$), from various collider and fixed target experiments are explored. Also, taking into account the additional decay channel of the sterile neutrino into a light gauge boson ($ν_4 \to ν_\ell e^+ e^-$), we explore and constrain a parameter space for low energy excess in neutrino oscillation experiments.

Heavy dark matter through the dilaton portal

We re-examine current and future constraints on a heavy dilaton coupled to a simple dark sector consisting of a Majorana fermion or a Stückelberg vector field. We include three different treatments of dilaton-Higgs mixing, paying particular attention to a gauge-invariant formulation of the model. Moreover, we also invite readers to re-examine effective field theories of vector dark matter, which we show are missing important terms. Along with the latest Higgs coupling data, heavy scalar search results, and dark matter density/direct detection constraints, we study the LHC bounds on the model and estimate the prospects of dark matter production at the future HL-LHC and 100 TeV FCC colliders. We additionally compute novel perturbative unitarity constraints involving vector dark matter, dilaton and gluon scattering.

Correlation between $R_{D^{(*)}}$ and top quark FCNC decays in leptoquark models

Some interpretations of $R_{D^{(*)}}$ anomaly in $B$ meson decay using leptoquark (LQ) models can also generate top quark decays through Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC). In this work we focus on two LQs, i.e. scalar $S_1$ and vector $U_1$ which are both singlet under the $SU(2)_L$ gauge group in the Standard Model (SM). We investigate their implications on the 3-body top FCNC decays $t\to c \ell_i \ell_j$ at tree level and the 2-body $t\to c V$ at one-loop level, with $\ell$ being the SM leptons and $V=γ, Z, g$ being the SM gauge bosons. We utilize the $2σ$ parameter fitting ranges of the LQ models and find that $Br(t\to c \ell_i \ell_j)$ at tree level can reach $\mathcal{O}(10^{-6})$ and $Br(t\to c V)$ at one-loop level can reach $\mathcal{O}(10^{-10})$. Some quick collider search prospects are also analyzed.

Light Dark Matter Showering under Broken Dark $U(1)$ -- Revisited

It was proposed recently that different chiralities of the dark matter (DM) fermion under a broken dark U(1) gauge group can lead to distinguishable signatures at the LHC through shower patterns, which may reveal the mass origin of the dark sector. We study this subject further by examining the dark shower of two simplified models, the dubbed Chiral Model and the Vector Model. We derive a more complete set of collinear splitting functions with power corrections, specifying the helicities of the initial DM fermion and including the contribution from an extra degree of freedom, the dark Higgs boson. The dark shower is then implemented with these splitting functions, and the new features resulting from its correct modelling are emphasized. It is shown that the DM fermion chirality can be differentiated by measuring dark shower patterns, especially the DM jet energy profile, which is almost independent of the DM energy.

Unitarizing SIMP scenario with dark vector resonances

Dark pion is the one of the most natural and realistic model to make $3 \rightarrow 2$ contact interactions among models of the Strongly Interacting Massive Particle (SIMP). In this model, there is a perturbativity problem to satisfy the relic density with the self-annihilation. So we show the perturbativity problem can be alleviated and the SIMP pion model become more realistic by including dark vector mesons.

Resolving phenomenological problems with strongly-interacting-massive-particle models with dark vector resonances

We consider a light dark matter candidate which is produced by the freeze-out mechanism with $3\rightarrow2$ annihilations, the so called Strongly Interacting Massive Particles (SIMPs). SIMPs are identified as dark pions in dark chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) where both light mass and strong coupling needed for SIMPs can be realized by strong dynamics. In QCD-like theories with $SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R /SU(3)_V$ flavor symmetry, including dark vector mesons in the hidden local symmetry scheme, we illustrate that dark vector mesons unitarize the dark ChPT efficiently, thus determine the correct relic density condition within the validity of the dark ChPT.

Heavy quark-philic scalar dark matter with a vector-like fermion portal

In this work we consider a real scalar dark matter $S$ interacting only with $SU(2)_L$ singlet Up-type quarks $U_i=u_R,c_R,t_R$ via a vector-like fermion $ψ$ which has the same quantum number as $U_i$. The DM-nucleon scattering can proceed through both $h$-mediated Higgs portal (HP) and $ψ$-mediated vector-like portal (VLP), in which HP can receive sizable radiative corrections through the new fermions. We first study the separate constraints on the new Yukawa couplings $y_i$ and find that the constraints of XENON1T results are strong on $y_1$ from VLP scattering and on $y_3$ from its radiative contributions to HP scattering. Since both DM-light quark interactions and HP have been well studied in the existing literature, we move forward to focus on DM-heavy quark interactions. Since there is no valence $c,t$ quark inside nucleons at $μ_{\rm had}\sim 1$ GeV, $y_2,y_3$ interactions are manifested in DM-gluon scattering at loop level. We find that renormalization group equation (RGE) and heavy quark threshold effects are important if one calculates the DM-nucleon scattering rate $σ^{\rm SI}_{p}$ at $μ_{\rm had}\sim 1\, {\rm GeV}$ while constructing the effective theory at $μ_{\rm EFT}\sim m_Z$. For the benchmarks $y_3=0.5, y_2=0.5, 1, 3$, combined results from $Ω_{\rm DM} h^2\simeq 0.12$, XENON1T, Fermi-LAT, 13 TeV LHC data have almost excluded $m_S<m_t/2$ when only DM-$\{c,t\}$ interactions are considered. FCNC of top quark can be generated at both tree level $t\to ψ^{(*)}S \to cSS$ and loop level $t\to c+γ/g/Z$, of which the branching fractions are typically below $10^{-9}$ after passing the other constraints, which are still safe from the current top quark width measurements.
