SCAR: Spatial-/Channel-wise Attention Regression Networks for Crowd Counting

Recently, crowd counting is a hot topic in crowd analysis. Many CNN-based counting algorithms attain good performance. However, these methods only focus on the local appearance features of crowd scenes but ignore the large-range pixel-wise contextual and crowd attention information. To remedy the above problems, in this paper, we introduce the Spatial-/Channel-wise Attention Models into the traditional Regression CNN to estimate the density map, which is named as "SCAR". It consists of two modules, namely Spatial-wise Attention Model (SAM) and Channel-wise Attention Model (CAM). The former can encode the pixel-wise context of the entire image to more accurately predict density maps at the pixel level. The latter attempts to extract more discriminative features among different channels, which aids model to pay attention to the head region, the core of crowd scenes. Intuitively, CAM alleviates the mistaken estimation for background regions. Finally, two types of attention information and traditional CNN's feature maps are integrated by a concatenation operation. Furthermore, the extensive experiments are conducted on four popular datasets, Shanghai Tech Part A/B, GCC, and UCF_CC_50 Dataset. The results show that the proposed method achieves state-of-the-art results.

New nonexistence results on $(m,n)$-generalized bent functions

In this paper, we present some new nonexistence results on $(m,n)$-generalized bent functions, which improved recent results. More precisely, we derive new nonexistence results for general $n$ and $m$ odd or $m \equiv 2 \pmod{4}$, and further explicitly prove nonexistence of $(m,3)$-generalized bent functions for all integers $m$ odd or $m \equiv 2 \pmod{4}$. The main tools we utilized are certain exponents of minimal vanishing sums from applying characters to group ring equations that characterize $(m,n)$-generalized bent functions.

Combinatorial t-designs from quadratic functions

Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It was recently reported that the image sets of a fixed size of certain special polynomials may constitute a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from special polynomials has been done, and it is in general hard to determine their parameters. In this paper, we investigate this idea further by using quadratic functions over finite fields, thereby obtain infinite families of $2$-designs, and explicitly determine their parameters. The obtained designs cover some earlier $2$-designs as special cases. Furthermore, we confirmed Conjecture $3$ in Ding and Tang (arXiv: 1903.07375, 2019).

Intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect amplified by disorder in a half-metallic semimetal

Intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), like its Hall counterpart, is generated by Berry curvature of electrons in solids. Little is known about its response to disorder. In contrast, the link between the amplitude of the ordinary Nernst coefficient and the mean-free-path is extensively documented. Here, by studying Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, a topological half-metallic semimetal hosting sizable and recognizable ordinary and anomalous Nernst responses, we demonstrate an anti-correlation between the amplitude of ANE and carrier mobility. We argue that the observation, paradoxically, establishes the intrinsic origin of the ANE in this system. We conclude that various intrinsic off-diagonal coefficients are set by the way the Berry curvature is averaged on a grid involving the mean-free-path, the Fermi wavelength and the de Broglie thermal length.

Arbitrarily High-order Unconditionally Energy Stable Schemes for Thermodynamically Consistent Gradient Flow Models

We present a systematical approach to developing arbitrarily high order, unconditionally energy stable numerical schemes for thermodynamically consistent gradient flow models that satisfy energy dissipation laws. Utilizing the energy quadratization (EQ) method, We formulate the gradient flow model into an equivalent form with a corresponding quadratic free energy functional. Based on the equivalent form with a quadratic energy, we propose two classes of energy stable numerical approximations. In the first approach, we use a prediction-correction strategy to improve the accuracy of linear numerical schemes. In the second approach, we adopt the Gaussian collocation method to discretize the equivalent form with a quadratic energy, arriving at an arbitrarily high-order scheme for gradient flow models. Schemes derived using both approaches are proved rigorously to be unconditionally energy stable. The proposed schemes are then implemented in four gradient flow models numerically to demonstrate their accuracy and effectiveness. Detailed numerical comparisons among these schemes are carried out as well. These numerical strategies are rather general so that they can be readily generalized to solve any thermodynamically consistent PDE models.

Magnetic-field control of topological electronic response near room temperature in correlated Kagome magnets

Strongly correlated Kagome magnets are promising candidates for achieving controllable topological devices owing to the rich interplay between inherent Dirac fermions and correlation-driven magnetism. Here we report tunable local magnetism and its intriguing control of topological electronic response near room temperature in the Kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 using small angle neutron scattering, muon spin rotation, and magnetoresistivity measurement techniques. The average bulk spin direction and magnetic domain texture can be tuned effectively by small magnetic fields. Magnetoresistivity, in response, exhibits a measurable degree of anisotropic weak localization behavior, which allows the direct control of Dirac fermions with strong electron correlations. Our work points to a novel platform for manipulating emergent phenomena in strongly-correlated topological materials relevant to future applications.

Arbitrarily High-order Unconditionally Energy Stable Schemes for Gradient Flow Models Using the Scalar Auxiliary Variable Approach

In this paper, we propose a novel family of high-order numerical schemes for the gradient flow models based on the scalar auxiliary variable (SAV) approach, which is named the high-order scalar auxiliary variable (HSAV) method. The newly proposed schemes could be shown to reach arbitrarily high order in time while preserving the energy dissipation law without any restriction on the time step size (i.e., unconditionally energy stable). The HSAV strategy is rather general that it does not depend on the specific expression of the effective free energy, such that it applies to a class of thermodynamically consistent gradient flow models arriving at semi-discrete high-order energy-stable schemes. We then employ the Fourier pseudospectral method for spatial discretization. The fully discrete schemes are also shown to be unconditionally energy stable. Furthermore, we present several numerical experiments on several widely-used gradient flow models, to demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency and unconditionally energy stability of the HSAV schemes. The numerical results verify that the HSAV schemes can reach the expected order of accuracy, and it allows a much larger time step size to reach the same accuracy than the standard SAV schemes.

Water-based Reconfigurable Frequency Selective Rasorber with Thermally Tunable Absorption Band

In this paper, a novel water-based reconfigurable frequency selective rasorber (FSR) at microwave band is proposed, which has a thermally tunable absorption band above the transmission band. The water-based FSR consists of a bandpass type frequency selective surface (FSS) and a 3D printing container. The water substrate is filled into the sealed space constructed by the above two structures. The numerical simulation results show that the FSR can achieve absorption with high absorptivity from 8.3 to 15.2 GHz, and obtain a transmission band of 5.2 to 7.0 GHz. The minimum insertion loss of the transmission band reaches 0.72 dB at 6.14 GHz. In addition, the FSR has the reconfigurable characteristics of absorbing or reflecting electromagnetic waves by filling with water or not. The proposed water-based FSR shows its good transmission/absorption performance under different polarizations and oblique incident angles. Due to the Debye model of water, the absorption band can be adjusted by water temperature, while the passband remains stable. At last, prototype of the FSR based on water has been fabricated, and the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed structure.

Estimating Commuting Patterns from High Resolution Phone GPS Data

The rise of location positioning technologies has generated enormous volumes of digital footprints. Translating this big data into understandable trip patterns plays a crucial role in estimating infrastructure demands. Previous studies were unable to correctly represent commuting patterns on smaller urban scales due to insufficient spatial accuracy. In this study, we investigated if, and to what extent, estimated commuting patterns identified from GPS data can replicate the results from transportation surveys and to what degree these estimates improve the estimates of trips distribution pattern on census tract level using higher resolution data. We inferred average daily home-to-work trips by analyzing phone GPS data and compared these patterns with U.S. Census summary tables. We found that trips detected by GPS data highly correlate with census trips. Furthermore, GPS data is a better proxy for Census tract-pairs with larger numbers of trips.

Near-room-temperature giant topological Hall effect in antiferromagnetic kagome metal YMn6Sn6

The kagome lattice, consisting of interconnected triangles and hexagons uniquely, is an excellent model system for study frustrated magnetism, electronic correlation and topological electronic structure. After an intensive investigation on frustrated magnetism in insulating magnetic kagome lattices, the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom via spin-orbital coupling in metallic systems (kagome metals) has become an attractive topic recently. Here, we study centrosymmetric YMn6Sn6 with Mn kagome lattice. We discover that it exhibits giant topological Hall effect near room temperature, ascribed to the field-induced non-collinear spin texture, possibly a skyrmion lattice (SkL) state. Combined with the large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, YMn6Sn6 shows a synergic effect of real- and momentum-space Berry phase on physical properties. Since the features of tunable magnetic interaction and flexible structure in this large homologous series, it provides a novel platform for understanding the influence of electronic correlations on topological quantum states in both real and momentum spaces.

VADER: a VAriable Dose-rate External 137Cs irradiatoR for internal emitter and low dose rate studies

Beyond prompt irradiation, Cs-137 is likely to be the most biologically important agent released in many accidental (or malicious) radiation exposure scenarios. Cs-137 either can enter the food chain or be consumed or if present in the environment (e.g. fallout) can provide external irradiation. In either case, due to the high penetration of the 662 keV gamma rays emitted by Cs-137, the individual will be exposed to a uniform, whole body, irradiation at low dose rates. The VADER (VAriable Dose-rate External Cs-137 irradiatoR) allows modeling these exposures, bypassing many of the problems inherent in internal emitter studies. Making use of discarded Cs-137 brachytherapy seeds, the VADER can provide varying low dose rate irradiations at dose rates of 0.1 to 1.2 Gy/day. The VADER includes a mouse "hotel", designed to allow long term simultaneous residency of up to 15 mice. Two source platters containing ~250 mCi each of Cs-137 brachytherapy seeds are mounted above and below the cage and can be moved under computer control to provide constant low dose rate or a varying dose rate mimicking Cs biokinetics in mouse or man. We present the VADER design and characterization of its performance.

PCC Net: Perspective Crowd Counting via Spatial Convolutional Network

Crowd counting from a single image is a challenging task due to high appearance similarity, perspective changes and severe congestion. Many methods only focus on the local appearance features and they cannot handle the aforementioned challenges. In order to tackle them, we propose a Perspective Crowd Counting Network (PCC Net), which consists of three parts: 1) Density Map Estimation (DME) focuses on learning very local features for density map estimation; 2) Random High-level Density Classification (R-HDC) extracts global features to predict the coarse density labels of random patches in images; 3) Fore-/Background Segmentation (FBS) encodes mid-level features to segments the foreground and background. Besides, the DULR module is embedded in PCC Net to encode the perspective changes on four directions (Down, Up, Left and Right). The proposed PCC Net is verified on five mainstream datasets, which achieves the state-of-the-art performance on the one and attains the competitive results on the other four datasets. The source code is available at https://github.com/gjy3035/PCC-Net.

Global well-posedness of advective Lotka-Volterra competition systems with nonlinear diffusion

This paper investigates the global well-posedness of a class of reaction-advection-diffusion models with nonlinear diffusion and Lotka-Volterra dynamics. We prove the existence and uniform boundedness of the global-in-time solutions to the fully parabolic systems under certain growth conditions on the diffusion and sensitivity functions. Global existence and uniform boundedness of the corresponding parabolic-elliptic system are also obtained. Our results suggest that attraction (positive taxis) inhibits blowups in Lotka-Volterra competition systems.

On-demand contact line pinning during droplet evaporation

Depending on the contact line motion, colloid-rich drolets evaporation can leave a ring-like or a spot-like residue. Herein, we determine this outcome by controlling the contact line motion using coplanar direct current electrowetting-on-dielectrics (DC-EWOD). Combined with theoretical calculations of the droplet shape and its evaporation rate, the time-dependent actuation voltage is first derived from experiments and simulations. Thanks to the additional control over the contact angle, the contact line can be maintained in pinned state even on surfaces that exhibit little contact angle hysteresis such as homogenous flat Teflon coatings. In the absence of EWOD control, polystyrene particles and Escherichia coli suspended in the droplet formed a dot-like pattern at the center of the initial contact, whereas application of the mechanism resulted in ring-like patterns of a controllable radius. Unlike chemically or structurally patterned substrates, the contact line could recover its mobility at any preset time before reaching the control limit, which is useful to accurately and consistently fabricate self-assembled nanostructures of desired patterns on different surfaces.

Mutual derivation between arbitrary distribution forms of momenta and momentum components

The mutual derivation between arbitrary distribution forms of momenta and momentum components of particles produced in an isotropic emission source are systematically studied in terms of probability theory and mathematical statistics. The distributions of rapidities and pseudorapidities are expediently studied. As an example, the classical and relativistic ideal gas models are used to show these distributions by the analytic and Monte Carlo methods. As an application, the experimental rapidity and transverse momentum spectra of light flavor particles produced in high energy collisions are analyzed by a multi-component relativistic ideal gas model in which the single model can be replaced by other models and distributions.

Nanoscale spin-wave wake-up receiver

We present the concept of a passive spin-wave device which is able to distinguish different radio-frequency pulse trains and validate its functionality using micromagnetic simulations. The information is coded in the phase of the individual pulses which are transformed into spin-wave packets. The device splits every incoming packet into two arms, one of which is coupled to a magnonic ring which introduces a well-defined time delay and phase shift. Since the time delay is matched to the pulse repetition rate, adjacent packets interfere in a combiner which makes it possible to distinguish simple pulse train patterns by the read-out of the time-integrated spin-wave intensity in the output. Due to its passive construction, this device may serve as an energy-efficient wake-up receiver used to activate the main receiver circuit in power critical IoT applications.

Influences of electron-phonon interaction on quantum transport through one quantum-dot system with side-coupled Majorana zero mode

We investigate the influences of the electron-phonon interaction on the transport properties of one quantum-dot system with a side-coupled Majorana zero mode (MZM). Our calculation results show that at the zero-temperature limit, the MZM-governed zero-bias conductance value can be magnified, dependent on the interplay between electron-phonon interaction and dot-MZM coupling. In the case of finite temperature, the electron-phonon interaction makes leading contributions to the suppression of the magnitude of zero-bias conductance. We believe that this work can be helpful for understanding the signature of the MZM in electron transport through mesoscopic circuits.

Locality and Structure Regularized Low Rank Representation for Hyperspectral Image Classification

Hyperspectral image (HSI) classification, which aims to assign an accurate label for hyperspectral pixels, has drawn great interest in recent years. Although low rank representation (LRR) has been used to classify HSI, its ability to segment each class from the whole HSI data has not been exploited fully yet. LRR has a good capacity to capture the underlying lowdimensional subspaces embedded in original data. However, there are still two drawbacks for LRR. First, LRR does not consider the local geometric structure within data, which makes the local correlation among neighboring data easily ignored. Second, the representation obtained by solving LRR is not discriminative enough to separate different data. In this paper, a novel locality and structure regularized low rank representation (LSLRR) model is proposed for HSI classification. To overcome the above limitations, we present locality constraint criterion (LCC) and structure preserving strategy (SPS) to improve the classical LRR. Specifically, we introduce a new distance metric, which combines both spatial and spectral features, to explore the local similarity of pixels. Thus, the global and local structures of HSI data can be exploited sufficiently. Besides, we propose a structure constraint to make the representation have a near block-diagonal structure. This helps to determine the final classification labels directly. Extensive experiments have been conducted on three popular HSI datasets. And the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed LSLRR outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.
