Penetrative turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection in two and three dimensions

Penetrative turbulent Rayleigh-Bénard convection which depends on the density maximum of water near $4^\circ\rm{C}$ is studied using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) direct numerical simulations (DNS). The working fluid is water near $4^\circ\rm{C}$ with Prandtl number $Pr=11.57$. The considered Rayleigh numbers $Ra$ range from $10^7$ to $10^{10}$. The density inversion parameter $θ_m$ varies from 0 to 0.9. It is found that the ratio of the top and bottom thermal boundary-layer thickness ($F_λ=λ_t^θ/λ_b^θ$) increases with increasing $θ_m$, and the relationship between $F_λ$ and $θ_m$ seems to be independent of $Ra$. The centre temperature $θ_c$ is enhanced compared to that of Oberbeck-Boussinesq (OB) cases, as $θ_c$ is related to $F_λ$ with $1/θ_c=1/F_λ+1$, $θ_c$ is also found to have a universal relationship with $θ_m$ which is independent of $Ra$. Both the Nusselt number $Nu$ and the Reynolds number $Re$ decrease with increasing $θ_m$, the normalized Nusselt number $Nu(θ_m)/Nu(0)$ and Reynolds number $Re(θ_m)/Re(0)$ also have universal relationships with $θ_m$ which seem to be independent of both $Ra$ and the aspect ratio $Γ$. The scaling exponents of $Nu\sim Ra^α$ and $Re\sim Ra^β$ are found to be insensitive to $θ_m$ despite of the remarkable change of the flow organizations.

Anonymous Auction Protocol Based on Time-Released Encryption atop Consortium Blockchain

The Ethereum blockchain as a decentralized platform is so successful that many applications deployed on it. However, for the inherent transparency properties and the lack of privacy, deploying a financial application on top of it is always a challenge. In this paper, we tackle this challenge and propose an anonymous sealed-bid auction protocol based on time-released encryption atop Consortium Blockchain. We adopt a strict digital certificate-based identity mechanism of the consortium blockchain to permit legitimate participants, and utilize the blind signature based on elliptic curve technology to allowing anonymous participation. Moreover, a timed release public key encryption algorithm is adopted to encrypt bids and prevent auctioneer from colluding with bidders. This is completely different from the method (zero-knowledge proof) used in other papers to prevent collusion between auctioneer and bidder. We provide a specific analysis of our protocol, which shows that our protocol meets anonymity and applicability.

Partial Geometric Designs from Group Actions

In this paper, using group actions, we introduce a new method for constructing partial geometric designs (sometimes referred to as $1\frac{1}{2}$-designs). Using this new method, we construct several infinite families of partial geometric designs by investigating the actions of various linear groups of degree two on certain subsets of $\mathbb{F}_{q}^{2}$. Moreover, by computing the stabilizers of such subsets in various linear groups of degree two, we are also able to construct a new infinite family of balanced incomplete block designs.

A Bayesian-Based Approach for Public Sentiment Modeling

Public sentiment is a direct public-centric indicator for the success of effective action planning. Despite its importance, systematic modeling of public sentiment remains untapped in previous studies. This research aims to develop a Bayesian-based approach for quantitative public sentiment modeling, which is capable of incorporating uncertainty and guiding the selection of public sentiment measures. This study comprises three steps: (1) quantifying prior sentiment information and new sentiment observations with Dirichlet distribution and multinomial distribution respectively; (2) deriving the posterior distribution of sentiment probabilities through incorporating the Dirichlet distribution and multinomial distribution via Bayesian inference; and (3) measuring public sentiment through aggregating sampled sets of sentiment probabilities with an application-based measure. A case study on Hurricane Harvey is provided to demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the proposed approach. The developed approach also has the potential to be generalized to model various types of probability-based measures.

Infinite families of $2$-designs from two classes of binary cyclic codes with three nonzeros

Combinatorial $t$-designs have been an interesting topic in combinatorics for decades. It is a basic fact that the codewords of a fixed weight in a code may hold a $t$-design. Till now only a small amount of work on constructing $t$-designs from codes has been done. In this paper, we determine the weight distributions of two classes of cyclic codes: one related to the triple-error correcting binary BCH codes, and the other related to the cyclic codes with parameters satisfying the generalized Kasami case, respectively. We then obtain infinite families of $2$-designs from these codes by proving that they are both affine-invariant codes, and explicitly determine their parameters. In particular, the codes derived from the dual of binary BCH codes hold five $3$-designs when $m=4$.

Infinite families of $2$-designs from two classes of linear codes

The interplay between coding theory and $t$-designs has attracted a lot of attention for both directions. It is well known that the supports of all codewords with a fixed weight in a code may hold a $t$-design. In this paper, by determining the weight distributions of two classes of linear codes, we derive infinite families of $2$-designs from the supports of codewords with a fixed weight in these codes, and explicitly obtain their parameters.

Learning from Synthetic Data for Crowd Counting in the Wild

Recently, counting the number of people for crowd scenes is a hot topic because of its widespread applications (e.g. video surveillance, public security). It is a difficult task in the wild: changeable environment, large-range number of people cause the current methods can not work well. In addition, due to the scarce data, many methods suffer from over-fitting to a different extent. To remedy the above two problems, firstly, we develop a data collector and labeler, which can generate the synthetic crowd scenes and simultaneously annotate them without any manpower. Based on it, we build a large-scale, diverse synthetic dataset. Secondly, we propose two schemes that exploit the synthetic data to boost the performance of crowd counting in the wild: 1) pretrain a crowd counter on the synthetic data, then finetune it using the real data, which significantly prompts the model's performance on real data; 2) propose a crowd counting method via domain adaptation, which can free humans from heavy data annotations. Extensive experiments show that the first method achieves the state-of-the-art performance on four real datasets, and the second outperforms our baselines. Deep Bayesian Multi-Target Learning for Recommender Systems

With the increasing variety of services that e-commerce platforms provide, criteria for evaluating their success become also increasingly multi-targeting. This work introduces a multi-target optimization framework with Bayesian modeling of the target events, called Deep Bayesian Multi-Target Learning (DBMTL). In this framework, target events are modeled as forming a Bayesian network, in which directed links are parameterized by hidden layers, and learned from training samples. The structure of Bayesian network is determined by model selection. We applied the framework to Taobao live-streaming recommendation, to simultaneously optimize (and strike a balance) on targets including click-through rate, user stay time in live room, purchasing behaviors and interactions. Significant improvement has been observed for the proposed method over other MTL frameworks and the non-MTL model. Our practice shows that with an integrated causality structure, we can effectively make the learning of a target benefit from other targets, creating significant synergy effects that improve all targets. The neural network construction guided by DBMTL fits in with the general probabilistic model connecting features and multiple targets, taking weaker assumption than the other methods discussed in this paper. This theoretical generality brings about practical generalization power over various targets distributions, including sparse targets and continuous-value ones.

Negative flat band magnetism in a spin-orbit coupled correlated kagome magnet

It has long been speculated that electronic flat band systems can be a fertile ground for hosting novel emergent phenomena including unconventional magnetism and superconductivity. Although flat bands are known to exist in a few systems such as heavy fermion materials and twisted bilayer graphene, their microscopic roles and underlying mechanisms in generating emergent behavior remain elusive. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy to elucidate the atomically resolved electronic states and their magnetic response in the kagome magnet Co3Sn2S2. We observe a pronounced peak at the Fermi level, which is identified to arise from the kinetically frustrated kagome flat band. Increasing magnetic field up to +-8T, this state exhibits an anomalous magnetization-polarized Zeeman shift, dominated by an orbital moment in opposite to the field direction. Such negative magnetism can be understood as spin-orbit coupling induced quantum phase effects tied to non-trivial flat band systems. We image the flat band peak, resolve the associated negative magnetism, and provide its connection to the Berry curvature field, showing that Co3Sn2S2 is a rare example of kagome magnet where the low energy physics can be dominated by the spin-orbit coupled flat band. Our methodology of probing band-resolved ordering phenomena such as spin-orbit magnetism can also be applied in future experiments to elucidate other exotic phenomena including flat band superconductivity and anomalous quantum transport.

PatientEG Dataset: Bringing Event Graph Model with Temporal Relations to Electronic Medical Records

Medical activities, such as diagnoses, medicine treatments, and laboratory tests, as well as temporal relations between these activities are the basic concepts in clinical research. However, existing relational data model on electronic medical records (EMRs) lacks explicit and accurate semantic definitions of these concepts. It leads to the inconvenience of query construction and the inefficiency of query execution where multi-table join queries are frequently required. In this paper, we propose a patient event graph (PatientEG) model to capture the characteristics of EMRs. We respectively define five types of medical entities, five types of medical events and five types of temporal relations. Based on the proposed model, we also construct a PatientEG dataset with 191,294 events, 3,429 distinct entities, and 545,993 temporal relations using EMRs from Shanghai Shuguang hospital. To help to normalize entity values which contain synonyms, hyponymies, and abbreviations, we link them with the Chinese biomedical knowledge graph. With the help of PatientEG dataset, we are able to conveniently perform complex queries for clinical research such as auxiliary diagnosis and therapeutic effectiveness analysis. In addition, we provide a SPARQL endpoint to access PatientEG dataset and the dataset is also publicly available online. Also, we list several illustrative SPARQL queries on our website.

VMAV-C: A Deep Attention-based Reinforcement Learning Algorithm for Model-based Control

Recent breakthroughs in Go play and strategic games have witnessed the great potential of reinforcement learning in intelligently scheduling in uncertain environment, but some bottlenecks are also encountered when we generalize this paradigm to universal complex tasks. Among them, the low efficiency of data utilization in model-free reinforcement algorithms is of great concern. In contrast, the model-based reinforcement learning algorithms can reveal underlying dynamics in learning environments and seldom suffer the data utilization problem. To address the problem, a model-based reinforcement learning algorithm with attention mechanism embedded is proposed as an extension of World Models in this paper. We learn the environment model through Mixture Density Network Recurrent Network(MDN-RNN) for agents to interact, with combinations of variational auto-encoder(VAE) and attention incorporated in state value estimates during the process of learning policy. In this way, agent can learn optimal policies through less interactions with actual environment, and final experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our model in control problem.

Stress-induced anisotropy in granular materials: fabric, stiffness, and permeability

The loading of a granular material induces anisotropies of the particle arrangement (fabric) and of the material's strength, incremental stiffness, and permeability. Thirteen measures of fabric anisotropy are developed, which are arranged in four categories: as preferred orientations of the particle bodies, the particle surfaces, the contact normals, and the void space. Anisotropy of the voids is described through image analysis and with Minkowski tensors. The thirteen measures of anisotropy change during loading, as determined with three-dimensional discrete element simulations of biaxial plane strain compression with constant mean stress. Assemblies with four different particle shapes were simulated. The measures of contact orientation are the most responsive to loading, and they change greatly at small strains, whereas the other measures lag the loading process and continue to change beyond the state of peak stress and even after the deviatoric stress has nearly reached a steady state. The paper implements a methodology for characterizing the incremental stiffness of a granular assembly during biaxial loading, with orthotropic loading increments that preserve the principal axes of the fabric and stiffness tensors. The linear part of the hypoplastic tangential stiffness is monitored with oedometric loading increments. This stiffness increases in the direction of the initial compressive loading but decreases in the direction of extension. Anisotropy of this stiffness is closely correlated with a particular measure of the contact fabric. Permeabilities are measured in three directions with lattice Boltzmann methods at various stages of loading and for assemblies with four particle shapes. Effective permeability is negatively correlated with the directional mean free path and is positively correlated with pore width.

Linear Second Order Energy Stable Schemes of Phase Field Model with Nonlocal Constraints for Crystal Growth

We present a set of linear, second order, unconditionally energy stable schemes for the Allen-Cahn model with a nonlocal constraint for crystal growth that conserves the mass of each phase. Solvability conditions are established for the linear systems resulting from the linear schemes. Convergence rates are verified numerically. Dynamics obtained using the nonlocal Allen-Cahn model are compared with the one obtained using the classic Allen-Cahn model as well as the Cahn-Hilliard model, demonstrating slower dynamics than that of the Allen-Cahn model but faster dynamics than that of the Cahn-Hillard model. Thus, the nonlocal Allen-Cahn model can be an alternative to the Cahn-Hilliard model in simulating crystal growth. Two Benchmark examples are presented to illustrate the prediction made with the nonlocal Allen-Cahn model in comparison to those made with the Allen-Cahn model and the Cahn- Hillard model.

Mg$_{3+δ}$Sb$_x$Bi$_{2-x}$ family: A promising substitute for the start-of-art n-type thermoelectric materials near room temperature

Bi2Te3-xSex family has been the n-type start-of-the-art thermoelectric materials near room temperatures (RT) for more than half-century, which dominates the active cooling and novel waves harvesting application near RT. However, the drawbacks of brittle nature and Te-containing restrict the further applications exploring. Here, we show that a Mg3+δSbxBi2-x family ((ZT)avg =1.05) could be a promising substitute for the Bi2Te3-xSex family ((ZT)avg =0.9-1.0) in the temperature range of 50-250 °C based on the comparable thermoelectric performance through a synergistic effect from the tunable band gap using the alloy effect and the suppressible Mg-vacancy formation using interstitial Mn dopant. The former is to shift the optimal thermoelectric performance to near RT, and latter is helpful to partially decouple the electrical transport and thermal transport in order to get an optimal RT power factor. A positive temperature-dependence of band gap suggested this family is also a superior medium-temperature thermoelectric material for the significantly suppressed bipolar effect. Furthermore, a two times higher mechanical toughness, compared with Bi2Te3-xSex family, consolidates the promising substitute for the start-of-art n-type thermoelectric materials near RT.

Secure outsourced calculations with homomorphic encryption

With the rapid development of cloud computing, the privacy security incidents occur frequently, especially data security issues. Cloud users would like to upload their sensitive information to cloud service providers in encrypted form rather than the raw data, and to prevent the misuse of data. The main challenge is to securely process or analyze these encrypted data without disclosing any useful information, and to achieve the rights management efficiently. In this paper, we propose the encrypted data processing protocols for cloud computing by utilizing additively homomorphic encryption and proxy cryptography. For the traditional homomorphic encryption schemes with many limitations, which are not suitable for cloud computing applications. We simulate a cloud computing scenario with flexible access control and extend the original homomorphic cryptosystem to suit our scenario by supporting various arithmetical calculations. We also prove the correctness and security of our protocols, and analyze the advantages and performance by comparing with some latest works.

A Second Order Fully-discrete Linear Energy Stable Scheme for a Binary Compressible Viscous Fluid Model

We present a linear, second order fully discrete numerical scheme on a staggered grid for a thermodynamically consistent hydrodynamic phase field model of binary compressible fluid flow mixtures derived from the generalized Onsager Principle. The hydrodynamic model not only possesses the variational structure, but also warrants the mass, linear momentum conservation as well as energy dissipation. We first reformulate the model in an equivalent form using the energy quadratization method and then discretize the reformulated model to obtain a semi-discrete partial differential equation system using the Crank-Nicolson method in time. The numerical scheme so derived preserves the mass conservation and energy dissipation law at the semi-discrete level. Then, we discretize the semi-discrete PDE system on a staggered grid in space to arrive at a fully discrete scheme using the 2nd order finite difference method, which respects a discrete energy dissipation law. We prove the unique solvability of the linear system resulting from the fully discrete scheme. Mesh refinements and two numerical examples on phase separation due to the spinodal decomposition in two polymeric fluids and interface evolution in the gas-liquid mixture are presented to show the convergence property and the usefulness of the new scheme in applications.

An attention-based Bi-GRU-CapsNet model for hypernymy detection between compound entities

Named entities are usually composable and extensible. Typical examples are names of symptoms and diseases in medical areas. To distinguish these entities from general entities, we name them \textit{compound entities}. In this paper, we present an attention-based Bi-GRU-CapsNet model to detect hypernymy relationship between compound entities. Our model consists of several important components. To avoid the out-of-vocabulary problem, English words or Chinese characters in compound entities are fed into the bidirectional gated recurrent units. An attention mechanism is designed to focus on the differences between the two compound entities. Since there are some different cases in hypernymy relationship between compound entities, capsule network is finally employed to decide whether the hypernymy relationship exists or not. Automatic Severity Classification of Coronary Artery Disease via Recurrent Capsule Network

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease deaths. CAD condition progresses rapidly, if not diagnosed and treated at an early stage may eventually lead to an irreversible state of the heart muscle death. Invasive coronary arteriography is the gold standard technique for CAD diagnosis. Coronary arteriography texts describe which part has stenosis and how much stenosis is in details. It is crucial to conduct the severity classification of CAD. In this paper, we employ a recurrent capsule network (RCN) to extract semantic relations between clinical named entities in Chinese coronary arteriography texts, through which we can automatically find out the maximal stenosis for each lumen to inference how severe CAD is according to the improved method of Gensini. Experimental results on the corpus collected from Shanghai Shuguang Hospital show that our proposed method achieves an accuracy of 97.0\% in the severity classification of CAD.
