Critical behaviors of half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2

We have investigated the critical behavior of a shandite-type half-metal ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2. It exhibits a second-order paramagnetic-ferromagnetic phase transition with TC = 174 K. To investigate the nature of the magnetic phase transition, a detailed critical exponent study has been performed. The critical components beta, gamma, and delta determined using the modified Arrott plot, the Kouvel-Fisher method as well as the critical isotherm analysis are match reasonably well and follow the scaling equation, confirming that the exponents are unambiguous and intrinsic to the material. The determined exponents of Co3Sn2S2 deviates from theoretical estimated short-range universal models. Instead, Co3Sn2S2 exhibits long-range order in the nature of magnetic interaction with the spin decay as J(r) ~ 1/r^[-(d + sigma)] with sigma = 1.28.

Spatial Dependence of Polycyclic Aromatic Compounds Growth in Counterflow Flames

The formation mechanisms of aromatic compounds in flame are strongly influenced by the chemical and thermal history that leads to their formation. Indeed, the complex environments that characterize combustion systems do not only affect the composition of gas-phase species, but they also determine the structure and the characteristics of the soot precursors generated. To illustrate the importance of these effects, in this work we investigate the growth mechanisms of soot precursors in an atmospheric-pressure ethylene/oxygen/argon counterflow diffusion flame, using a combination of computational and experimental techniques. In diffusion flames, flow characteristics play an important role in the formation, growth, and oxidation of particles, and soot precursors are strongly affected by the flame location. Fluid dynamics simulations and stochastic discrete modeling were employed together to identify key reaction pathways along various flow streamlines. The models were validated with experimental mass spectra obtained using aerosol mass spectrometry coupled with vacuum-ultraviolet photoionization. Results show that both the hydrogen-abstraction-acetylene-addition mechanism and oxygen-insertion reactions are responsible for the molecular growth, and their relative importance is determined by the flame conditions along the streamlines. Oxygenated species were detected in regions of high temperature, high atomic oxygen concentration, and relatively low acetylene abundance. This study also emphasizes the need to model the counterflow flame in three dimensions to capture the spatial dependence on growth mechanisms of soot precursors.

Large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect in half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 with magnetic Weyl fermions

The origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic materials is one of the most intriguing aspect in condensed matter physics and has been controversial for a long time. Recent studies indicate that the intrinsic AHE is closely related to the Berry curvature of occupied electronic states. In a magnetic Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, there are significant contributions on Berry curvature around Weyl nodes, which would lead to a large intrinsic AHE. Here, we report the large intrinsic AHE in the half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 single crystal. By systematically mapping out the electronic structure of Co3Sn2S2 theoretically and experimentally, the large intrinsic AHE should originate from the Weyl fermions near the Fermi energy. Furthermore, the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization and this can be attributed to the sharp decrease of magnetization and the change of topological characteristics.

Extremely large magnetoresistance and high-density Dirac-like fermions in ZrB2

We report the detailed study on transport properties of ZrB2 single crystal, a predicted topological nodal-line semimetal. ZrB2 exhibits extremely large magnetoresistance as well as field-induced resistivity upturn and plateau. These behaviors can be well understood by the two-band model with the perfect electron - hole compensation and high carrier mobilities. More importantly, the electrons with small effective masses and nontrivial Berry phase have significantly high density when compared to those in known topological semimetals. It strongly suggests that ZrB2 hosts Dirac-like nodal-line fermions.

Some New Balanced and Almost Balanced Quaternary Sequences with Low Autocorrelation

Quaternary sequences of both even and odd period having low autocorrelation are studied. We construct new families of balanced quaternary sequences of odd period and low autocorrelation using cyclotomic classes of order eight, as well as investigate the linear complexity of some known quaternary sequences of odd period. We discuss a construction given by Chung et al. in "New Quaternary Sequences with Even Period and Three-Valued Autocorrelation" [IEICE Trans. Fundamentals Vol. E93-A, No. 1 (2010)] first by pointing out a slight modification (thereby obtaining new families of balanced and almost balanced quaternary sequences of even period and low autocorrelation), then by showing that, in certain cases, this slight modification greatly simplifies the construction given by Shen et al. in "New Families of Balanced Quaternary Sequences of Even Period with Three-level Optimal Autocorrelation" [IEEE Comm. Letters DOI10.1109/LCOMM.2017.26611750 (2017)]. We investigate the linear complexity of these sequences as well.

Nijenhuis operators on pre-Lie algebras

First we use a new approach to give a graded Lie algebra whose Maurer-Cartan elements characterize pre-Lie algebra structures. Then using this graded Lie bracket we define the notion of a Nijenhuis operator on a pre-Lie algebra which generates a trivial deformation of this pre-Lie algebra. There are close relationships between O-operators, Rota-Baxter operators and Nijenhuis operators on a pre-Lie algebra. In particular, a Nijenhuis operator "connects" two O-operators on a pre-Lie algebra whose any linear combination is still an O-operator in certain sense and hence compatible L-dendriform algebras appear naturally as the induced algebraic structures. For the case of the dual representation of the regular representation of a pre-Lie algebra, there is a geometric interpretation by introducing the notion of a pseudo-Hessian-Nijenhuis structure which gives rise to a sequence of pseudo-Hessian and pseudo-Hessian-Nijenhuis structures. Another application of Nijenhuis operators on pre-Lie algebras in geometry is illustrated by introducing the notion of a para-complex structure on a pre-Lie algebra and then studying paracomplex quadratic pre-Lie algebras and paracomplex pseudo-Hessian pre-Lie algebras in detail. Finally, we give some examples of Nijenhuis operators on pre-Lie algebras.

A Bibliometric Model for Identifying Emerging Research Topics

Detecting emerging research topics is essential, not only for research agencies but also for individual researchers. Previous studies have created various bibliographic indicators for the identification of emerging research topics. However, as indicated by Rotolo et al. (2015), the most serious problems are the lack of an acknowledged definition of emergence and incomplete elaboration of the linkages between the definitions that are used and the indicators that are created. With these issues in mind, this study first adjusts the definition of an emerging technology that Rotolo et al. (2015) have proposed in order to accommodate the analysis. Next, a set of criteria for the identification of emerging topics is proposed according to the adjusted definition and attributes of emergence. By the use of two sets of parameter values, several emerging research topics are identified. Finally, evaluation tests are conducted by demonstration of the proposed approach and comparison with previous studies. The strength of the present methodology lies in the fact that it is fully transparent, straightforward, and flexible.

Time-periodic and stable patterns of a two-competing-species Keller-Segel chemotaxis model: effect of cellular growth

This paper investigates the formation of time--periodic and stable patterns of a two--competing--species Keller--Segel chemotaxis model with a focus on the effect of cellular growth. We carry out rigorous Hopf bifurcation analysis to obtain the bifurcation values, spatial profiles and time period associated with these oscillating patterns. Moreover, the stability of the periodic solutions is investigated and it provides a selection mechanism of stable time--periodic mode which suggests that only large domains support the formation of these periodic patterns. Another main result of this paper reveals that cellular growth is responsible for the emergence and stabilization of the oscillating patterns observed in the $3\times3$ system, while the system admits a Lyapunov functional in the absence of cellular growth. Global existence and boundedness of the system in 2D are proved thanks to this Lyapunov functional. Finally, we provide some numerical simulations to illustrate and support our theoretical findings.

Faster-than-Nyquist Non-Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing for Visible Light Communications

In this paper, we propose a faster-than-Nyquist (FTN) non-orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (NOFDM) scheme for visible light communications (VLC) where the multiplexing/demultiplexing employs the inverse fractional cosine transform (IFrCT)/FrCT. Different to the common fractional Fourier transform-based NOFDM (FrFT-NOFDM) signal, FrCT-based NOFDM (FrCT-NOFDM) signal is real-valued which can be directly applied to the VLC systems without the expensive upconversion. Thus, FrCT-NOFDM is more suitable for the cost-sensitive VLC systems. Meanwhile, under the same transmission rate, FrCT-NOFDM signal occupies smaller bandwidth compared to OFDM signal. When the bandwidth compression factor $α$ is set to $0.8$, $20\%$ bandwidth saving can be obtained. Therefore, FrCT-NOFDM has higher spectral efficiency and suffers less high-frequency distortion compared to OFDM, which benefits the bandwidth-limited VLC systems. As the simulation results show, bit error rate (BER) performance of FrCT-NOFDM with $α$ of $0.9$ or $0.8$ is better than that of OFDM. Moreover, FrCT-NOFDM has a superior security performance. In conclusion, FrCT-NOFDM shows great potential for application in the future VLC systems.

Phase Retrieval via Sparse Wirtinger Flow

Phase retrieval(PR) problem is a kind of ill-condition inverse problem which can be found in various of applications. Utilizing the sparse priority, an algorithm called SWF(Sparse Wirtinger Flow) is proposed in this paper to deal with sparse PR problem based on the Wirtinger flow method. SWF firstly recovers the support of the signal and then updates the evaluation by hard thresholding method with an elaborate initialization. Theoretical analyses show that SWF has a geometric convergence for any $k$ sparse $n$ length signal with the sampling complexity $\mathcal{O}(k^2\mathrm{log}n)$. To get $\varepsilon$ accuracy, the computational complexity of SWF is $\mathcal{O}(k^3n\mathrm{log}n\mathrm{log}\frac{1}{\varepsilon})$. Numerical tests also demonstrate that SWF performs better than state-of-the-art methods especially when we have no priori knowledge about sparsity $k$. Moreover, SWF is also robust to the noise

Reconfigurable nano-scale spin-wave directional coupler

A spin-wave (SW) directional coupler comprised of two laterally parallel nano-scale dipolarly-coupled SW waveguides is proposed and studied using micromagnetic simulations and analytical theory. The energy of a SW excited in one of the waveguides in the course of propagation is periodically transferred to the other waveguide and back, and the spatial half-period of this transfer is defined as the coupling length. The coupling length is determined by the dipolar coupling between the waveguides, and the fraction of the SW energy transferred to the other waveguide at the device output can be varied with the SW frequency, bias magnetic field, and relative orientation of the waveguide's static magnetizations. The proposed design of a directional coupler can be used in digital computing-oriented magnonics as a connector (multiplexer) of magnonic conduits without a direct contact, or in the analog microwave signal processing as a reconfigurable nano-scale power divider and/or frequency separator.

Numerical Approximations for a three components Cahn-Hilliard phase-field Model based on the Invariant Energy Quadratization method

How to develop efficient numerical schemes while preserving the energy stability at the discrete level is a challenging issue for the three component Cahn-Hilliard phase-field model. In this paper, we develop first and second order temporal approximation schemes based on the "Invariant Energy Quadratization" approach, where all nonlinear terms are treated semi-explicitly. Consequently, the resulting numerical schemes lead to a well-posed linear system with the symmetric positive definite operator to be solved at each time step. We rigorously prove that the proposed schemes are unconditionally energy stable. Various 2D and 3D numerical simulations are presented to demonstrate the stability and the accuracy of the schemes.

Stationary and time periodic patterns of two-predator and one-prey systems with prey-taxis

This paper concerns pattern formation in a class of reaction-advection-diffusion systems modeling the population dynamics of two predators and one prey. We consider the biological situation that both predators forage along the population density gradient of the preys which can defend themselves as a group. We prove the global existence and uniform boundedness of positive classical solutions for the fully parabolic system over a bounded domain with space dimension $N=1,2$ and for the parabolic- -parabolic-elliptic system over higher space dimensions. Linearized stability analysis shows that prey-taxis stabilizes the positive constant equilibrium if there is no group defense while it destabilizes the equilibrium otherwise. Then we obtain stationary and time-periodic nontrivial solutions of the system that bifurcate from the positive constant equilibrium. Moreover, the stability of these solutions is also analyzed in detail which provides a wave mode selection mechanism of nontrivial patterns for this strongly coupled system. Finally, we perform numerical simulations to illustrate and support our theoretical results.

Anomalous Hall effect of ferromagnetic Fe3Sn2 single crystal with geometrically frustrated kagome lattice

The anomalous Hall effect is investigated for ferromagnetic Fe3Sn2 single crystal with geometrically frustrated kagome bilayer of Fe. The scaling behavior between anomalous Hall resistivity rho_{xy}^{A} and longitudinal resistivity rho_{xx} is quadratic and further analysis implies that the AHE in Fe3Sn2 single crystal should be dominated by the intrinsic Karplus-Luttinger mechanism rather than extrinsic skew-scattering or side-jump mechanisms. Moreover, there is a sudden jump of anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_{xy}^{A} appearing at about 100 K where the spin-reorientation transition from the c axis to the ab plane is completed. This change of sigma_{xy}^{A} might be related to the evolution of Fermi surface induced by the spin-reorientation transition.

Proposal of Readout Electronics for CSNS-WNS BaF2 Detector

BaF2 (Barium fluoride) detector is one of the experiment facilities at the under construction CSNS-WNS (White Neutron Source at China Spallation Neutron Source). It is designed for precisely measuring (n,gamma) cross section with total 92 crystal elements and completely 4 pi steradian coverage. In this proposal for readout electronics, waveform digitizing technique with 1GSps sampling rate and 12-bit resolution is adopted to precisely capture the detector signal. To solve the problem of massive data readout and processing, the readout electronics system is designed into a distributed architecture with 4 PXIe crates. The digitized detector's signal is concentrated to PXIe crate controller through PCIe bus on backplane and transmitted to data acquisition system over Gigabit Ethernet in parallel. Besides, clock and trigger can be fanned out synchronously to each electronic channel over a high-precision distributing network. Test results showed that the prototype of the readout electronics system achieved good performance and cooperated well.

Structure-Preserving Galerkin POD Reduced-Order Modeling of Hamiltonian Systems

The proper orthogonal decomposition reduced-order models (POD-ROMs) have been widely used as a computationally efficient surrogate models in large-scale numerical simulations of complex systems. However, when it is applied to a Hamiltonian system, a naive application of the POD method can destroy its Hamiltonian structure in the reduced-order model. In this paper, we develop a new reduce-order modeling approach for the Hamiltonian system, which uses the traditional framework of Galerkin projection-based model reduction but modifies the ROM so that the appropriate Hamiltonian structure is preserved. Since the POD truncation can degrade the approximation of the Hamiltonian function, we propose to use the POD basis from shifted snapshots to improve the Hamiltonian function approximation. We further derive a rigorous a priori error estimate of the structure-preserving ROM and demonstrate its effectiveness in several numerical examples. This approach can be readily extended to dissipative Hamiltonian systems, port-Hamiltonian systems etc.

Large magnetoresistance in LaBi: origin of field-induced resistivity upturn and plateau in compensated semimetals

The discovery of non-magnetic extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) materials has induced great interests because the XMR phenomenon challenges our understanding of how a magnetic field can alter electron transport in semimetals. Among XMR materials, the LaSb shows XMR and field-induced exotic behaviors but it seems to lack the essentials for these properties. Here, we study the magnetotransport properties and electronic structure of LaBi, isostructural to LaSb. LaBi exhibits large MR as in LaSb, which can be ascribed to the nearly compensated electron and hole with rather high mobilities. More importantly, our analysis suggests that the XMR as well as field-induced resistivity upturn and plateau observed in LaSb and LaBi can be well explained by the two-band model with the compensation situation. We present the critical conditions leading to these field-induced properties. It will contribute to understanding the XMR phenomenon and explore novel XMR materials.
