Joint BS-RIS-User Association and Beamforming Design for RIS-assisted Cellular Networks

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a revolutionary technology for sixth-generation (6G) networks owing to its ability to manipulate wireless environments. As a frequency-selective device, RIS can only effectively shape the propagation of signals within a certain frequency band. Due to this frequency-selective property, the deployment of RIS in cellular networks will introduce a complicated base station (BS)-RIS-user association issue since adjacent BSs operate at different frequency bands. In this paper, with the consideration of the frequency-selective characteristics of RIS, we aim to jointly optimize BS-RIS-user association, active beamforming at BSs, and passive beamforming of RIS to maximize the sum-rate of a RIS-assisted cellular network. We first leverage $l_0$-norm to efficiently integrate BS-RIS-user association with active and passive beamforming. Then, we adopt fractional programming (FP) and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods to deal with logarithmic and fractional parts and decouple the joint association and beamforming design problem into several sub-problems. Efficient algorithms which combine $l_0$-norm approximation, majorization-minimization (MM), and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) are developed to alternately solve the sub-problems. Extensive simulation results illustrate the importance of BS-RIS-user association optimization in RIS-assisted cellular networks and verify the effectiveness of the proposed joint association and beamforming design algorithm.

End-to-End Learning for Symbol-Level Precoding and Detection with Adaptive Modulation

Conventional symbol-level precoding (SLP) designs assume fixed modulations and detection rules at the receivers for simplifying the transmit precoding optimizations, which greatly limits the flexibility of SLP and the communication quality-of-service (QoS). To overcome the performance bottleneck of these approaches, in this letter we propose an end-to-end learning based approach to jointly optimize the modulation orders, the transmit precoding and the receive detection for an SLP communication system. A neural network composed of the modulation order prediction (MOP-NN) module and the symbol-level precoding and detection (SLPD-NN) module is developed to solve this mathematically intractable problem. Simulations verify the notable performance improvement brought by the proposed end-to-end learning approach.

LEMON: Language-Based Environment Manipulation via Execution-Guided Pre-training

Language-based environment manipulation requires agents to manipulate the environment following natural language instructions, which is challenging due to the huge space of the environments. To address this challenge, various approaches have been proposed in recent work. Although these approaches work well for their intended environments, they are difficult to generalize across environments. In this work, we propose LEMON, a general framework for language-based environment manipulation tasks. Specifically, we first specify a task-agnostic approach for language-based environment manipulation tasks, which can deal with various environments using the same generative language model. Then we propose an execution-guided pre-training strategy to inject prior knowledge of environments to the language model with a pure synthetic pre-training corpus. Experimental results on tasks including Alchemy, Scene, Tangrams, ProPara and Recipes demonstrate the effectiveness of LEMON: it achieves new state-of-the-art results on four of the tasks, and the execution-guided pre-training strategy brings remarkable improvements on all experimental tasks.

Reasoning Like Program Executors

Reasoning over natural language is a long-standing goal for the research community. However, studies have shown that existing language models are inadequate in reasoning. To address the issue, we present POET, a novel reasoning pre-training paradigm. Through pre-training language models with programs and their execution results, POET empowers language models to harvest the reasoning knowledge possessed by program executors via a data-driven approach. POET is conceptually simple and can be instantiated by different kinds of program executors. In this paper, we showcase two simple instances POET-Math and POET-Logic, in addition to a complex instance, POET-SQL. Experimental results on six benchmarks demonstrate that POET can significantly boost model performance in natural language reasoning, such as numerical reasoning, logical reasoning, and multi-hop reasoning. POET opens a new gate on reasoning-enhancement pre-training, and we hope our analysis would shed light on the future research of reasoning like program executors.

Reflection of Thought: Inversely Eliciting Numerical Reasoning in Language Models via Solving Linear Systems

Numerical reasoning over natural language has been a long-standing goal for the research community. However, cutting-edge language models have proven difficult to reliably generalize to a broad range of numbers, although they have shown proficiency in reasoning over common and simple numbers. In this paper, we propose a novel method to elicit and exploit the numerical reasoning knowledge hidden in pre-trained language models using simple anchor numbers. Concretely, we first leverage simple numbers as anchors to probe the implicitly inferred arithmetic expressions from language models, and then explicitly apply the expressions on complex numbers to get corresponding answers. To inversely elicit arithmetic expressions, we transform and formulate the task as an analytically solvable linear system. Experimental results on several numerical reasoning benchmarks demonstrate that our approach significantly improves numerical reasoning capabilities of existing LMs. More importantly, our approach is training-free and simply works in the inference phase, making it highly portable and achieving consistent performance benefits across a variety of language models (GPT-3, T5, BART, etc) in all zero-shot, few-shot, and fine-tuning scenarios.

Mixed-modality Representation Learning and Pre-training for Joint Table-and-Text Retrieval in OpenQA

Retrieving evidences from tabular and textual resources is essential for open-domain question answering (OpenQA), which provides more comprehensive information. However, training an effective dense table-text retriever is difficult due to the challenges of table-text discrepancy and data sparsity problem. To address the above challenges, we introduce an optimized OpenQA Table-Text Retriever (OTTeR) to jointly retrieve tabular and textual evidences. Firstly, we propose to enhance mixed-modality representation learning via two mechanisms: modality-enhanced representation and mixed-modality negative sampling strategy. Secondly, to alleviate data sparsity problem and enhance the general retrieval ability, we conduct retrieval-centric mixed-modality synthetic pre-training. Experimental results demonstrate that OTTeR substantially improves the performance of table-and-text retrieval on the OTT-QA dataset. Comprehensive analyses examine the effectiveness of all the proposed mechanisms. Besides, equipped with OTTeR, our OpenQA system achieves the state-of-the-art result on the downstream QA task, with 10.1% absolute improvement in terms of the exact match over the previous best system. All the code and data are available at https://github.com/Jun-jie-Huang/OTTeR.

Joint Beamforming Designs for Active Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface: A Sub-Connected Array Architecture

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is regarded as a promising technology with great potential to boost wireless networks. Affected by the "double fading" effect, however, conventional passive RIS cannot bring considerable performance improvement when users are not close enough to RIS. Recently, active RIS is introduced to combat the double fading effect by actively amplifying incident signals with the aid of integrated reflection-type amplifiers. In order to reduce the hardware cost and energy consumption due to massive active components in the conventional fully-connected active RIS, a novel hardware-and-energy efficient sub-connected active RIS architecture has been proposed recently, in which multiple reconfigurable electromagnetic elements are driven by only one amplifier. In this paper, we first develop an improved and accurate signal model for the sub-connected active RIS architecture. Then, we investigate the joint transmit precoding and RIS reflection beamforming (i.e., the reflection phase-shift and amplification coefficients) designs in multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) communication systems. Both sum-rate maximization and power minimization problems are solved by leveraging fractional programming (FP), block coordinate descent (BCD), second-order cone programming (SOCP), alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), and majorization-minimization (MM) methods. Extensive simulation results verify that compared with the conventional fully-connected structure, the proposed sub-connected active RIS can significantly reduce the hardware cost and power consumption, and achieve great performance improvement when power budget at RIS is limited.

Optimization for Reflection and Transmission Dual-Functional Active RIS-Assisted Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been deemed as one of potential components of future wireless communication systems because it can adaptively manipulate the wireless propagation environment with low-cost passive devices. However, due to the severe double path loss, the traditional passive RIS can provide sufficient gain only when receivers are very close to the RIS. Moreover, RIS cannot provide signal coverage for the receivers at the back side of it. To address these drawbacks in practical implementation, we introduce a novel reflection and transmission dual-functional active RIS architecture in this paper, which can simultaneously realize reflection and transmission functionalities with active signal amplification to significantly extend signal coverage and enhance the quality-of-service (QoS) of all users. The problem of joint transmit beamforming and dual-functional active RIS design is investigated in RIS-enhanced multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems. Both sum-rate maximization and power minimization problems are considered. To address their non-convexity, we develop efficient iterative algorithms to decompose them into separate several design problems, which are efficiently solved by exploiting fractional programming (FP) and Riemannian-manifold optimization techniques. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed dual-functional active RIS architecture and the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms over various benchmark schemes.

Joint Beamforming Design for Intelligent Omni Surface Assisted Wireless Communication Systems

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been widely considered as one of the key enabling techniques for future wireless communication networks owing to its ability of dynamically controlling the phase shift of reflected electromagnetic (EM) waves to construct a favorable propagation environment. While IRS only focuses on signal reflection, the recently emerged innovative concept of intelligent omni-surface (IOS) can provide the dual functionality of manipulating reflecting and transmitting signals. Thus, IOS is a new paradigm for achieving ubiquitous wireless communications. In this paper, we consider an IOSassisted multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) system where the IOS utilizes its reflective and transmissive properties to enhance the MU-MISO transmission. Both power minimization and sum-rate maximization problems are solved by exploiting the second-order cone programming (SOCP), Riemannian manifold, weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE), and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods. Simulation results verify the advancements of the IOS for wireless systems and illustrate the significant performance improvement of our proposed joint transmit beamforming, reflecting and transmitting phase-shift, and IOS energy division design algorithms. Compared with conventional IRS, IOS can significantly extend the communication coverage, enhance the strength of received signals, and improve the quality of communication links.

Non-Cooperative Resource Management for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Networks

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has emerged as a promising and revolutionizing technology for future wireless networks. Most existing IRS studies focus on simple cooperative systems which usually have a single frequency band. In realistic non-cooperative multi-band networks, however, the existing IRS designs may be not applicable or have severe performance degradation. Thus, in the complex network environment, it is more rational to consider IRSs as public resources to be dynamically allocated to appropriate users. In this paper, we first introduce the auction theory to tackle the resource management problem for a multi-IRS-assisted non-cooperative network. An efficient auction algorithm framework is introduced to sub-optimally solve this non-convex problem. Simulation result illustrates that the significant performance improvement can be achieved by applying the auction algorithm in the complex multi-IRS-assisted non-cooperative network.

User Association and Hybrid Beamforming Designs for Cooperative mmWave MIMO Systems

Hybrid analog and digital beamforming has emerged as a key enabling technology for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems since it can balance the trade-off between system performance and hardware efficiency. Owing to the strong ability of central control, cooperative networks show great potential to enhance the spectral efficiency of mmWave communications. In this paper, we consider cooperative mmWave MIMO systems and propose user association and hybrid beamforming design algorithms for three typical hybrid beamforming architectures. The central processing unit (CPU) of the cooperative networks first matches the service pairs of base stations (BSs) and users. Then, an iterative hybrid beamforming design algorithm is proposed to maximize the weighted achievable sum-rate performance of the mmWave MIMO system with fully connected hybrid beamforming architecture. Moreover, a heuristic analog beamforming design algorithm is introduced for the fixed subarray hybrid beamforming architecture. In an effort to further exploit multiple-antenna diversities, we also consider the dynamic subarray architecture and propose a novel antenna design algorithm for the analog beamforming design. Simulation results illustrate that the proposed hybrid beamforming algorithms achieve a significant performance improvement than other existing approaches and the dynamic subarray architecture has great advantages of improving the energy efficiency (EE) performance.

Partially Distributed Beamforming Design for RIS-Aided Cell-Free Networks

Cell-free networks are regarded as a promising technology to meet higher rate requirements for beyond fifth-generation (5G) communications. Most works on cell-free networks focus on either fully centralized beamforming to maximally enhance system performance, or fully distributed beamforming to avoid extensive channel state information (CSI) exchange among access points (APs). In order to achieve both network capacity improvement and CSI exchange reduction, we propose a partially distributed beamforming design algorithm for reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided cell-free networks. We aim at maximizing the weighted sum-rate of all users by designing active and passive beamforming subject to transmit power constraints of APs and unit-modulus constraints of RIS elements. The weighted sum-rate maximization problem is first transformed into an equivalent weighted sum-mean-square-error (sum-MSE) minimization problem, and then alternating optimization (AO) approach is adopted to iteratively design active and passive beamformer. Specifically, active beamforming vectors are obtained by local APs and passive beamforming vector is optimized by central processing unit (CPU). Numerical results not only illustrate the proposed partially distributed algorithm achieves the remarkable performance improvement compared with conventional local beamforming methods, but also further show the considerable potential of deploying RIS in cell-free networks.

Joint Beamforming Design in DFRC Systems for Wideband Sensing and OFDM Communications

Dual-function radar-communication (DFRC) systems, which can efficiently utilize the congested spectrum and costly hardware resources by employing one common waveform for both sensing and communication (S&C), have attracted increasing attention. While the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique has been widely adopted to support high-quality communications, it also has great potentials of improving radar sensing performance and providing flexible S&C. In this paper, we propose to jointly design the dual-functional transmit signals occupying several subcarriers to realize multi-user OFDM communications and detect one moving target in the presence of clutter. Meanwhile, the signals in other frequency subcarriers can be optimized in a similar way to perform other tasks. The transmit beamforming and receive filter are jointly optimized to maximize the radar output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR), while satisfying the communication SINR requirement and the power budget. An majorization minimization (MM) method based algorithm is developed to solve the resulting non-convex optimization problem. Numerical results reveal the significant wideband sensing gain brought by jointly designing the transmit signals in different subcarriers, and demonstrate the advantages of our proposed scheme and the effectiveness of the developed algorithm.

Joint Beamforming Design for RIS-Assisted Integrated Sensing and Communication Systems

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been envisioned as a promising technology to tackle the spectrum congestion problem for future networks. In this correspondence, we investigate to deploy a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in an ISAC system for achieving better performance. In particular, a multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously serves multiple single-antenna users with the assistance of a RIS and detects potential targets. The active beamforming of the BS and the passive beamforming of the RIS are jointly optimized to maximize the achievable sum-rate of the communication users while satisfying the constraint of beampattern similarity for radar sensing, the restriction of the RIS, and the transmit power budget. An efficient alternating algorithm based on the fractional programming (FP), majorization-minimization (MM), and manifold optimization methods is developed to convert the resulting non-convex optimization problem into two solvable sub-problems and iteratively solve them. Simulation studies illustrate the advancement of deploying RIS in ISAC systems and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Measurement of Muon-induced Neutron Production at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory

Solar, terrestrial, and supernova neutrino experiments are subject to muon-induced radioactive backgrounds. The China Jinping Underground Laboratory (CJPL), with its unique advantage of a 2400 m rock coverage and long distance from nuclear power plants, is ideal for MeV-scale neutrino experiments. Using a 1-ton prototype detector of the Jinping Neutrino Experiment (JNE), we detected 343 high-energy cosmic-ray muons and (7.86$ \pm $3.97) muon-induced neutrons from an 820.28-day dataset at the first phase of CJPL (CJPL-I). Based on the muon-induced neutrons, we measured the corresponding muon-induced neutron yield in a liquid scintillator to be $ (3.44 \pm 1.86_{\rm stat.}\pm 0.76_{\rm syst.})\times 10^{-4}μ^{-1}\rm g^{-1}cm^{2} $ at an average muon energy of \SI{340}{GeV}. We provided the first study for such neutron background at CJPL. A global fit including this measurement shows a power-law coefficient of (0.75$ \pm $0.02) for the dependence of the neutron yield at the liquid scintillator on muon energy.

Topological and Algebraic Structures of Atanassov's Intuitionistic Fuzzy-Values Space

We prove that the space of intuitionistic fuzzy values (IFVs) with a linear order based on a score function and an accuracy function has the same algebraic structure as the one induced by a linear order based on a similarity function and an accuracy function. By introducing a new operator for IFVs via the linear order based on a score function and an accuracy function, we show that such an operator is a strong negation on IFVs. Moreover, we observe that the space of IFVs is a complete lattice and a Kleene algebra with the new operator. We also demonstrate that the topological space of IFVs with the order topology induced by the above two linear orders is not separable and metrizable but compact and connected. From some new perspectives, our results partially answer three open problems posed by Atanassov [Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets: Theory and Applications, Springer, 1999] and [On Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets Theory, Springer, 2012]. Furthermore, we construct an isomorphism between the spaces of IFVs and q-rung orthopedic fuzzy values (q-ROFVs) under the corresponding linear orders. To this end, we introduce the concept of admissible similarity measures with particular orders for IFSs, extending the existing definition of the similarity measure for IFSs, and construct an admissible similarity measure with a linear order based on a score function and an accuracy function, which is effectively applied to a pattern recognition problem about the classification of building materials.

Joint Transmit Waveform and Passive Beamforming Design for RIS-Aided DFRC Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising technology for 6G networks owing to its superior ability to enhance the capacity and coverage of wireless communications by smartly creating a favorable propagation environment. In this paper, we investigate the potential of employing RIS in dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) systems for improving both radar sensing and communication functionalities. In particular, we consider a RIS-assisted DFRC system in which the multi-antenna base station (BS) simultaneously performs both multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar sensing and multi-user multi-input single-output (MU-MISO) communications using the same hardware platform. We aim to jointly design the dual-functional transmit waveform and the passive beamforming of RIS to maximize the radar output signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) achieved by space-time adaptive processing (STAP), while satisfying the communication quality-of-service (QoS) requirement under one of three metrics, the constant-modulus constraint on the transmit waveform, and the unit-modulus constraint of RIS reflecting coefficients. An efficient algorithm framework based on the alternative direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and majorization-minimization (MM) methods is developed to solve the complicated non-convex optimization problem. Simulation results verify the advancement of the proposed RIS-assisted DRFC scheme and the effectiveness of the developed ADMM-MM-based joint transmit waveform and passive beamforming design algorithm.
