Low-Complexity Designs of Symbol-Level Precoding for MU-MISO Systems

Symbol-level precoding (SLP), which converts the harmful multi-user interference (MUI) into beneficial signals, can significantly improve symbol-error-rate (SER) performance in multi-user communication systems. While enjoying symbolic gain, however, the complicated non-linear symbol-by-symbol precoder design suffers high computational complexity exponential with the number of users, which is unaffordable in realistic systems. In this paper, we propose a novel low-complexity grouped SLP (G-SLP) approach and develop efficient design algorithms for typical max-min fairness and power minimization problems. In particular, after dividing all users into several groups, the precoders for each group are separately designed on a symbol-by-symbol basis by only utilizing the symbol information of the users in that group, in which the intra-group MUI is exploited using the concept of constructive interference (CI) and the inter-group MUI is also effectively suppressed. In order to further reduce the computational complexity, we utilize the Lagrangian dual, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions and the majorization-minimization (MM) method to transform the resulting problems into more tractable forms, and develop efficient algorithms for obtaining closed-form solutions to them. Extensive simulation results illustrate that the proposed G-SLP strategy and design algorithms dramatically reduce the computational complexity without causing significant performance loss compared with the traditional SLP schemes.

IRS-assisted Multi-cell Multi-band Systems: Practical Reflection Model and Joint Beamforming Design

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been regarded as a promising and revolutionary technology for future wireless communication systems owing to its capability of tailoring signal propagation environment in an energy/spectrum/hardware-efficient manner. However, most existing studies on IRS optimizations are based on a simple and ideal reflection model that is impractical in hardware implementation, which thus leads to severe performance loss in realistic wideband/multi-band systems. To deal with this problem, in this paper we first propose a more practical and more tractable IRS reflection model that describes the difference of reflection responses for signals at different frequencies. Then, we investigate the joint transmit beamforming and IRS reflection beamforming design for an IRS-assisted multi-cell multi-band system. Both power minimization and sum-rate maximization problems are solved by exploiting popular second-order cone programming (SOCP), Riemannian manifold, minimization-majorization (MM), weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE), and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods. Simulation results illustrate the significant performance improvement of our proposed joint transmit beamforming and reflection design algorithms based on the practical reflection model in terms of power saving and rate enhancement.

Reflection and Relay Dual-Functional RIS Assisted MU-MISO Systems

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been deemed as one of potential components of future wireless communication systems because they can adaptively manipulate the wireless propagation environment with low-cost passive devices. However, due to double fading effect, the passive RIS can offer sufficient signal strength only when receivers are nearby and located at the same side as the incident signals. Moreover, RIS cannot provide service coverage for the users at the back side of it. In this paper we introduce a novel reflection and relay dual-functional RIS architecture, which can simultaneously realize passive reflection and active relay functionalities to enhance the coverage. The problem of joint transmit beamforming and dual-functional RIS design is investigated to maximize the achievable sum-rate of a multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) system. Based on fractional programming (FP) theory and majorization-minimization (MM) technique, we propose an efficient iterative transmit beamforming and RIS design algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the introduced dual-functional RIS architecture and the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

TAPEX: Table Pre-training via Learning a Neural SQL Executor

Recent progress in language model pre-training has achieved a great success via leveraging large-scale unstructured textual data. However, it is still a challenge to apply pre-training on structured tabular data due to the absence of large-scale high-quality tabular data. In this paper, we propose TAPEX to show that table pre-training can be achieved by learning a neural SQL executor over a synthetic corpus, which is obtained by automatically synthesizing executable SQL queries and their execution outputs. TAPEX addresses the data scarcity challenge via guiding the language model to mimic a SQL executor on the diverse, large-scale and high-quality synthetic corpus. We evaluate TAPEX on four benchmark datasets. Experimental results demonstrate that TAPEX outperforms previous table pre-training approaches by a large margin and achieves new state-of-the-art results on all of them. This includes the improvements on the weakly-supervised WikiSQL denotation accuracy to 89.5% (+2.3%), the WikiTableQuestions denotation accuracy to 57.5% (+4.8%), the SQA denotation accuracy to 74.5% (+3.5%), and the TabFact accuracy to 84.2% (+3.2%). To our knowledge, this is the first work to exploit table pre-training via synthetic executable programs and to achieve new state-of-the-art results on various downstream tasks. Input-Tuning: Adapting Unfamiliar Inputs to Frozen Pretrained Models

Recently the prompt-tuning paradigm has attracted significant attention. By only tuning continuous prompts with a frozen pre-trained language model (PLM), prompt-tuning takes a step towards deploying a shared frozen PLM to serve numerous downstream tasks. Although prompt-tuning shows good performance on certain natural language understanding (NLU) tasks, its effectiveness on natural language generation (NLG) tasks is still under-explored. In this paper, we argue that one of the factors hindering the development of prompt-tuning on NLG tasks is the unfamiliar inputs (i.e., inputs are linguistically different from the pretraining corpus). For example, our preliminary exploration reveals a large performance gap between prompt-tuning and fine-tuning when unfamiliar inputs occur frequently in NLG tasks. This motivates us to propose input-tuning, which fine-tunes both the continuous prompts and the input representations, leading to a more effective way to adapt unfamiliar inputs to frozen PLMs. Our proposed input-tuning is conceptually simple and empirically powerful. Experimental results on seven NLG tasks demonstrate that input-tuning is significantly and consistently better than prompt-tuning. Furthermore, on three of these tasks, input-tuning can achieve a comparable or even better performance than fine-tuning.

Measurements of Rayleigh Ratios in Linear Alkylbenzene

In present work an experiment has been designed to measure the Rayleigh ratio directly at $405$ nm and $432$ nm for linear alkylbenzene which is a common solvent used in liquid scintillator detectors of neutrino experiments. The perpendicularly polarized Rayleigh ratio is determined to be $(4.52\pm 0.28)\times 10^{-6}$ m$^{-1}\cdot$ sr$^{-1}$ at $405$ nm and $(3.82\pm 0.24)\times 10^{-6}$ m$^{-1}\cdot$ sr$^{-1}$ at $432$ nm, and the corresponding Rayleigh scattering length is $L_{Ray} = 22.9\pm 0.3(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 1.7(\mathrm{sys.})$ m at $405$ nm and $L_{Ray}= 27.0\pm 0.9(\mathrm{stat.})\pm 1.8(\mathrm{sys.})$ m at $432$ nm.

A Monte Carlo Method for Rayleigh Scattering in Liquid Detectors

A new Monte Carlo method has been implemented to describe the angular and polarization distributions of anisotropic liquids, like water and linear alkylbenzene, by considering orientational fluctuations of polarizability tensors. The scattered light of anisotropic liquids is depolarized with an angular distribution of $1+(1-ρ_v)/(1+3ρ_v)\cos^2θ$, which is modified by the depolarization ratio $ρ_v$. A standalone experiment has validated the simulation results of LAB. The new method can provide more accurate knowledge on light propagation in large liquid detectors, which is beneficial to the developments of reconstruction for detectors.

Deep Reinforcement Learning based Joint Active and Passive Beamforming Design for RIS-Assisted MISO Systems

Owing to the unique advantages of low cost and controllability, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is a promising candidate to address the blockage issue in millimeter wave (mmWave) communication systems, consequently has captured widespread attention in recent years. However, the joint active beamforming and passive beamforming design is an arduous task due to the high computational complexity and the dynamic changes of wireless environment. In this paper, we consider a RIS-assisted multi-user multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) mmWave system and aim to develop a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based algorithm to jointly design active hybrid beamformer at the base station (BS) side and passive beamformer at the RIS side. By employing an advanced soft actor-critic (SAC) algorithm, we propose a maximum entropy based DRL algorithm, which can explore more stochastic policies than deterministic policy, to design active analog precoder and passive beamformer simultaneously. Then, the digital precoder is determined by minimum mean square error (MMSE) method. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed SAC algorithm can achieve better performance compared with conventional optimization algorithm and DRL algorithm.

DRL-based Joint Beamforming and BS-RIS-UE Association Design for RIS-Assisted mmWave Networks

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is considered as an extraordinarily promising technology to solve the blockage problem of millimeter wave (mmWave) communications owing to its capable of establishing a reconfigurable wireless propagation. In this paper, we focus on a RIS-assisted mmWave communication network consisting of multiple base stations (BSs) serving a set of user equipments (UEs). Considering the BS-RIS-UE association problem which determines that the RIS should assist which BS and UEs, we joint optimize BS-RIS-UE association and passive beamforming at RIS to maximize the sum-rate of the system. To solve this intractable non-convex problem, we propose a soft actor-critic (SAC) deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based joint beamforming and BS-RIS-UE association design algorithm, which can learn the best policy by interacting with the environment using less prior information and avoid falling into the local optimal solution by incorporating with the maximization of policy information entropy. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed SAC-DRL algorithm can achieve significant performance gains compared with benchmark schemes.

Simulation of a Xe-based X-ray Polarimeter at 10-30 keV

Polarization detection of X-rays is a non-negligible topic to astrophysical observation. Many polarization detection methods have been well developed for X-rays in the energy range below 10~keV, while the detection at 10-30~keV is rarely discussed. This paper presents a simulation study of a Xe-based gas pixel detector, which can achieve the polarization detection of X-rays at 10-30~keV. To verify the emission angle distribution of photoelectrons, different electromagnetic models in Geant4 were investigated. After a necessary modification by considering the missing factor when sampling the emission angle, a good agreement can be achieved. Moreover, the detection capability of 20~keV polarized photons was discussed and the modulation factor could be 43\%.

Reasoning over Hybrid Chain for Table-and-Text Open Domain QA

Tabular and textual question answering requires systems to perform reasoning over heterogeneous information, considering table structure, and the connections among table and text. In this paper, we propose a ChAin-centric Reasoning and Pre-training framework (CARP). CARP utilizes hybrid chain to model the explicit intermediate reasoning process across table and text for question answering. We also propose a novel chain-centric pre-training method, to enhance the pre-trained model in identifying the cross-modality reasoning process and alleviating the data sparsity problem. This method constructs the large-scale reasoning corpus by synthesizing pseudo heterogeneous reasoning paths from Wikipedia and generating corresponding questions. We evaluate our system on OTT-QA, a large-scale table-and-text open-domain question answering benchmark, and our system achieves the state-of-the-art performance. Further analyses illustrate that the explicit hybrid chain offers substantial performance improvement and interpretablity of the intermediate reasoning process, and the chain-centric pre-training boosts the performance on the chain extraction.

Image Edge Restoring Filter

In computer vision, image processing and computer graphics, image smoothing filtering is a very basic and important task and to be expected possessing good edge-preserving smoothing property. Here we address the problem that the edge-preserving ability of many popular local smoothing filters needs to be improved. In this paper, we propose the image Edge Restoring Filter (ERF) to restore the blur edge pixels in the output of local smoothing filters to be clear. The proposed filter can been implemented after many local smoothing filter (such as Box filter, Gaussian filter, Bilateral Filter, Guided Filter and so on). The combinations of "original local smoothing filters + ERF" have better edge-preserving smoothing property than the original local smoothing filters. Experiments on image smoothing, image denoising and image enhancement demonstrate the excellent edges restoring ability of the proposed filter and good edgepreserving smoothing property of the combination "original local smoothing filters + ERF". The proposed filter would benefit a great variety of applications given that smoothing filtering is a high frequently used and fundamental operation.

Concept-Aware Denoising Graph Neural Network for Micro-Video Recommendation

Recently, micro-video sharing platforms such as Kuaishou and Tiktok have become a major source of information for people's lives. Thanks to the large traffic volume, short video lifespan and streaming fashion of these services, it has become more and more pressing to improve the existing recommender systems to accommodate these challenges in a cost-effective way. In this paper, we propose a novel concept-aware denoising graph neural network (named CONDE) for micro-video recommendation. CONDE consists of a three-phase graph convolution process to derive user and micro-video representations: warm-up propagation, graph denoising and preference refinement. A heterogeneous tripartite graph is constructed by connecting user nodes with video nodes, and video nodes with associated concept nodes, extracted from captions and comments of the videos. To address the noisy information in the graph, we introduce a user-oriented graph denoising phase to extract a subgraph which can better reflect the user's preference. Despite the main focus of micro-video recommendation in this paper, we also show that our method can be generalized to other types of tasks. Therefore, we also conduct empirical studies on a well-known public E-commerce dataset. The experimental results suggest that the proposed CONDE achieves significantly better recommendation performance than the existing state-of-the-art solutions.

Awakening Latent Grounding from Pretrained Language Models for Semantic Parsing

Recent years pretrained language models (PLMs) hit a success on several downstream tasks, showing their power on modeling language. To better understand and leverage what PLMs have learned, several techniques have emerged to explore syntactic structures entailed by PLMs. However, few efforts have been made to explore grounding capabilities of PLMs, which are also essential. In this paper, we highlight the ability of PLMs to discover which token should be grounded to which concept, if combined with our proposed erasing-then-awakening approach. Empirical studies on four datasets demonstrate that our approach can awaken latent grounding which is understandable to human experts, even if it is not exposed to such labels during training. More importantly, our approach shows great potential to benefit downstream semantic parsing models. Taking text-to-SQL as a case study, we successfully couple our approach with two off-the-shelf parsers, obtaining an absolute improvement of up to 9.8%.

Dual-Functional Radar-Communication Waveform Design: A Symbol-Level Precoding Approach

Dual-functional radar-communication (DFRC) systems can simultaneously perform both radar and communication functionalities using the same hardware platform and spectrum resource. In this paper, we consider multi-input multi-output (MIMO) DFRC systems and focus on transmit beamforming designs to provide both radar sensing and multi-user communications. Unlike conventional block-level precoding techniques, we propose to use the recently emerged symbol-level precoding approach in DFRC systems, which provides additional degrees of freedom (DoFs) that guarantee preferable instantaneous transmit beampatterns for radar sensing and achieve better communication performance. In particular, the squared error between the designed and desired beampatterns is minimized subject to the quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of the communication users and the constant-modulus power constraint. Two efficient algorithms are developed to solve this non-convex problem on both the Euclidean and Riemannian spaces. The first algorithm employs penalty dual decomposition (PDD), majorization-minimization (MM), and block coordinate descent (BCD) methods to convert the original optimization problem into two solvable sub-problems, and iteratively solves them using efficient algorithms. The second algorithm provides a much faster solution at the price of a slight performance loss, first transforming the original problem into Riemannian space, and then utilizing the augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) to obtain an unconstrained problem that is subsequently solved via a Riemannian Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (RBFGS) algorithm. Extensive simulations verify the distinct advantages of the proposed symbol-level precoding designs in both radar sensing and multi-user communications.

Learning Algebraic Recombination for Compositional Generalization

Neural sequence models exhibit limited compositional generalization ability in semantic parsing tasks. Compositional generalization requires algebraic recombination, i.e., dynamically recombining structured expressions in a recursive manner. However, most previous studies mainly concentrate on recombining lexical units, which is an important but not sufficient part of algebraic recombination. In this paper, we propose LeAR, an end-to-end neural model to learn algebraic recombination for compositional generalization. The key insight is to model the semantic parsing task as a homomorphism between a latent syntactic algebra and a semantic algebra, thus encouraging algebraic recombination. Specifically, we learn two modules jointly: a Composer for producing latent syntax, and an Interpreter for assigning semantic operations. Experiments on two realistic and comprehensive compositional generalization benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of our model. BS-RIS-User Association and Beamforming Designs for RIS-aided Cellular Networks

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has been regarded as a revolutionary and promising technology owing to its powerful feature of adaptively shaping wireless propagation environment. However, as a frequency-selective device, the RIS can only effectively provide tunable phase-shifts for signals within a certain frequency band. Thus, base-station (BS)-RIS-user association is an important issue to maximize the efficiency and ability of the RIS in cellular networks. In this paper, we consider a RIS-aided cellular network and aim to maximize the sum-rate of downlink transmissions by designing BS-RIS-user association as well as the active and passive beamforming of BSs and RIS, respectively. A dynamically successive access algorithm is developed to design the user association. During the dynamical access process, an iterative algorithm is proposed to alternatively obtain the active and passive beamforming. Finally, the optimal BS-RIS association is obtained by an exhaustive search method. Simulation results illustrate the significant performance improvement of the proposed BS-RIS-user association and beamforming design algorithm.

Traveling wave solutions for the generalized (2+1)-dimensional Kundu-Mukherjee-Naskar equation

In this paper, we consider two types of traveling wave systems of the generalized Kundu-Mukherjee-Naskar equation. Firstly, due to the integrity, we obtain their energy functions. Then, the dynamical system method is applied to study bifurcation behaviours of the two types of traveling wave systems to obtain corresponding global phase portraits in different parameter bifurcation sets. According to them, every bounded and unbounded orbits can be identified clearly and investigated carefully which correspond to various traveling wave solutions of the generalized Kundu-Mukherjee-Naskar equation exactly. Finally, by integrating along these orbits and calculating some complicated elliptic integral, we obtain all type I and type II traveling wave solutions of the generalized Kundu-Mukherjee-Naskar equation without loss.
