Theory of Electromotive Force Induced by Domain Wall Motion

We formulate a theory on the dynamics of conduction electrons in the presence of moving magnetic textures in ferromagnetic materials. We show that the variation of local magnetization in both space and time gives rise to topological fields, which induce electromotive forces on the electrons. Universal results are obtained for the emf induced by both transverse and vortex domain walls traveling in a magnetic film strip, and their measurement may provide clear characterization on the motion of such walls.

Partial entropy in finite-temperature phase transitions

It is shown that the von Neumann entropy, a measure of quantum entanglement, does have its classical counterpart in thermodynamic systems, which we call partial entropy. Close to the critical temperature the partial entropy shows perfect finite-size scaling behavior even for quite small system sizes. This provides a powerful tool to quantify finite-temperature phase transitions as demonstrated on the classical Ising model on a square lattice and the ferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a cubic lattice.

Theory of electric polarization induced by inhomogeneity in crystals

We develop a general theory of electric polarization induced by inhomogeneity in crystals. We show that contributions to polarization can be classified in powers of the gradient of the order parameter. The zeroth order contribution reduces to the well-known result obtained by King-Smith and Vanderbilt for uniform systems. The first order contribution, when expressed in a two-point formula, takes the Chern-Simons 3-form of the vector potentials derived from the Bloch wave functions. Using the relation between polarization and charge density, we demonstrate our formula by studying charge fractionalization in a two-dimensional dimer model recently proposed.

Quantum Theory of Orbital Magnetization and its Generalization to Interacting Systems

Based on standard perturbation theory, we present a full quantum derivation of the formula for the orbital magnetization in periodic systems. The derivation is generally valid for insulators with or without a Chern number, for metals at zero or finite temperatures, and at weak as well as strong magnetic fields. The formula is shown to be valid in the presence of electron-electron interaction, provided the one-electron energies and wave functions are calculated self-consistently within the framework of the exact current and spin density functional theory.

Wave-packet view of the Dirac electron

By viewing the electron as a wavepacket in the positive energy spectrum of the Dirac equation, we are able to achieve a much clearer understanding of its behavior under weak electromagnetic fields. The intrinsic spin magnetic moment is found to be established from the self-rotation of the wavepacket. A non-canonical structure is also exhibited in the equations of motion due to non- Abelian geometric phases of the Dirac spinors. The wavepacket energy can be expressed simply in terms of the kinetic, electrostatic, and Zeeman terms only. This can be transformed into an effective quantum Hamiltonian by a novel scheme, and reproduces the Pauli Hamiltonian with all-order relativistic corrections.

Valley contrasting physics in graphene: magnetic moment and topological transport

We investigate physical properties that can be used to distinguish the valley degree of freedom in systems where inversion symmetry is broken, using graphene systems as examples. We show that the pseudospin associated with the valley index of carriers has an intrinsic magnetic moment, in close analogy with the Bohr magneton for the electron spin. There is also a valley dependent Berry phase effect that can result in a valley contrasting Hall transport, with carriers in different valleys turning into opposite directions transverse to an in-plane electric field. These effects can be used to generate and detect valley polarization by magnetic and electric means, forming the basis for the so-called valley-tronics applications.

Optical Control of Topological Quantum Transport in Semiconductors

Intense coherent laser radiation red-detuned from absorption edge can reactively activate sizable Hall type charge and spin transport in n-doped paramagnetic semiconductors as a consequence of k-space Berry curvature transferred from valence band to photon-dressed conduction band. In the presence of disorder, the optically induced Hall conductance can change sign with laser intensity.

Theory of conserved spin current and its application to two dimensional hole gas

We present a detailed microscopic theory of the conserved spin current which is introduced by us [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{96}, 196602 (2006)] and satisfies the spin continuity equation even for spin-orbit coupled systems. The spin transport coefficients $σ_{μν}^{s}$ as a response to the electric field are shown to consist of two parts, i.e., the conventional part $σ_{μν}^{s0}$ and the spin torque dipole correction $σ_{μν}^{sτ}$. As one key result, an Onsager relation between $σ_{μν}^{s}$ and other kinds of transport coefficients are shown. The expression for $σ_{μν}^{s}$ in terms of single-particle Bloch states are derived, by use of which we study the conserved spin Hall conductivity in the two dimensional hole gas modeled by a combined Luttinger and SIA Rashba spin-orbit coupling. It is shown that the two components in spin Hall conductivity usually have the opposite contributions. While in the absence of Rashba spin splitting, the spin Hall transport is dominated by the conventional contribution, the presence of Rashba spin splitting stirs up a large enhancement of the spin torque dipole correction, leading to an overall sign change for the total spin Hall conductivity. Furthermore, an approximate two-band calculation and the subsequent comparison with the exact four-band results are given, which reveals that the coupling between the heavy hole and light hole bands should be taken into account for strong Rashba spin splitting.

Theoretical Evidence for the Berry-Phase Mechanism of Anomalous Hall Transport: First-principles Studies on CuCr$_2$Se$_{4-x}$Br$_x$

To justify the origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE), it is highly desirable to have the system parameters tuned continuously. By quantitative calculations, we show that the doping dependent sign reversal in CuCr$_{2}$Se$_{4-x}$Br$_{x}$, observed but not understood, is nothing but direct evidence for the Berry-Phase mechanism of AHE. The systematic calculations well explain the experiment data for the whole doping range where the impurity scattering rates is changed by several orders with Br substitution. Further sign change is also predicted, which may be tested by future experiments.

Attractive electron-electron interaction induced by geometric phase in a Bloch band

We investigate electron pairing in the presence of the Berry curvature field that ubiquitously exists in ferromagnetic metals with spin-orbit coupling. We show that a sufficiently strong Berry curvature field on the Fermi surface can transform a repulsive interaction between electrons into an attractive one in the p-wave channel. We also reveal a topological possibility for turning an attractive s-wave interaction into one in the p-wave channel, even if the Berry curvature field only exists inside the Fermi surface (circle). We speculate that these novel mechanism might be relevant to the recently discovered ferromagnetic superconductors such as UGe$_{2}$ and URhGe.

Berry Phase Effects on Dynamics of Quasiparticles in a Superfluid with a Vortex

We study quasiparticle dynamics in a Bose-Einstein condensate with a vortex by following the center of mass motion of a Bogoliubov wavepacket, and find important Berry phase effects due to the background flow. We show that Berry phase invalidates the usual canonical relation between the mechanical momentum and position variables, leading to important modifications of quasiparticle statistics and thermodynamic properties of the condensates. Applying these results to a vortex in an infinite uniform superfluid, we find that the total transverse force acting on the vortex is proportional to the superfluid density. We propose an experimental setup to directly observe Berry phase effects through measuring local thermal atoms momentum distribution around a vortex.

Berry phase effect in anomalous thermoelectric transport

We develop a theory of Berry phase effect in anomalous transport in ferromagnets driven by statistical forces such as the gradient of temperature or chemical potential. Here a charge Hall current arises from the Berry phase correction to the orbital magnetization rather than from the anomalous velocity which does not exist in the absence of a mechanical force. A finite-temperature formula for the orbital magnetization is derived, which enables us to provide an explicit expression for the off-diagonal thermoelectric conductivity, to establish the Mott relation between the anomalous Nernst and Hall effects, and to reaffirm the Onsager relations between reciprocal thermoelectric conductivities. A first-principles evaluation of our expression is carried out for the material CuCr$_2$Se$_{4-x}$Br$_x$, obtaining quantitative agreement with a recent experiment.

Quantum Many-Body Culling

We propose a method to produce a definite number of ground-state atoms by adiabatic reduction of the depth of a potential well that confines a degenerate Bose gas with repulsive interactions. Using a variety of methods, we map out the maximum number of particles that can be supported by the well as a function of the well depth and interaction strength, covering the limiting case of a Tonks gas as well as the mean-field regime. We also estimate the time scales for adiabaticity and discuss the recent observation of atomic number squeezing (Chuu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 95}, 260403 (2005)).

Linear magnetization dependence of the intrinsic anomalous Hall effect

The anomalous Hall effect is investigated experimentally and theoretically for ferromagnetic thin films of Mn$_5$Ge$_3$. We have separated the intrinsic and extrinsic contributions to the experimental anomalous Hall effect, and calculated the intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity from the Berry curvature of the Bloch states using first-principles methods. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity depends linearly on the magnetization, which can be understood from the long wavelength fluctuations of the spin orientation at finite temperatures. The quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is remarkably good, not only near 0 K, but also at finite temperatures, up to about ~ 240 K (0.8 T$_C$})

Imaging of critical correlations in optical lattices and atomic traps

We consider critical space-time correlations in trapped utracold atoms and propose a method for their detection by the interference with a reference Bose-Einstein condensate. An important information about universal properties can be obtained despite non-uniformity and small sizes of atomic clouds. The advantage of this method is that the correlation properties of the interference pattern are robust with respect to expansion and are not, practically, affected by microscopic structure of underlying lattice including structural disorder. The non-destructive scheme allows measuring the space-time correlators of arbitrary order.

Geometrical phase effects on the Wigner distribution of Bloch electrons

We investigate the dynamics of Bloch electrons using a density operator method and connect this approach with previous theories based on wave packets. We study non-interacting systems with negligible disorder and strong spin-orbit interactions, which have been at the forefront of recent research on spin-related phenomena. We demonstrate that the requirement of gauge invariance results in a shift in the position at which the Wigner function of Bloch electrons is evaluated. The present formalism also yields the correction to the carrier velocity arising from the Berry phase. The gauge-dependent shift in carrier position and the Berry phase correction to the carrier velocity naturally appear in the charge and current density distributions. In the context of spin transport we show that the spin velocity may be defined in such a way as to enable spin dynamics to be treated on the same footing as charge dynamics. Aside from the gauge-dependent position shift we find additional, gauge-covariant multipole terms in the density distributions of spin, spin current and spin torque.

Bose-Einstein Condensation with Entangled Order Parameter

We propose a practically accessible non-mean-field ground state of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), which occurs in an interspecies two-particle entangled state, and is thus described by an entangled order parameter. A suitably defined entanglement entropy is used as the characterization of the non-mean-field nature, and is found to persist in a wide parameter regime. The interspecies entanglement leads to novel interference terms in the dynamical equations governing the single particle orbital wavefunctions. Experimental feasibility and several methods of probe are discussed. We urge the study of multi-channel scattering between different species of atoms.
