On A Proper Definition of Spin Current

The conventional definition of spin current is incomplete and unphysical in describing spin transport in systems with spin-orbit coupling. A proper and measurable spin current is established in this study, which fits well into the standard framework of near-equilibrium transport theory and has the desirable property to vanish in insulators with localized orbitals. Experimental implications of our theory are discussed.

Interaction broadening of Wannier functions and Mott transitions in atomic BEC

Superfluid to Mott-insulator transitions in atomic BEC in optical lattices are investigated for the case of number of atoms per site larger than one. To account for mean field repulsion between the atoms in each well, we construct an orthogonal set of Wannier functions. The resulting hopping amplitude and on-site interaction may be substantially different from those calculated with single-atom Wannier functions. As illustrations of the approach we consider lattices of various dimensionality and different mean occupations. We find that in three-dimensional optical lattices the correction to the critical lattice depth is significant to be measured experimentally even for small number of atoms. Finally, we discuss validity of the single band model.

Disorder effects in the AHE induced by Berry curvature

We describe the charge transport in ferromagnets with spin orbit coupled Bloch bands by combining the wave-packet evolution equations with the classical Boltzmann equation. This approach can be justified in the limit of smooth disorder potential. Besides the skew scattering contribution, we demonstrate how other effects of disorder appear which are closely linked to the Berry curvature of the Bloch states associated with the wavepacket. We show that, although being of the same order of magnitude as the clean limit Berry curvature contribution, generally disorder corrections depend differently on various parameters and can lead to the sign reversal of the Hall current as the function of the chemical potential in systems with a non-constant Berry curvature in momentum space. Earlier conclusions on the effects of disorder on the anomalous Hall effect depended stricly on the lack of momentum dependence of the Berry curvature in the models studied and generalizations of their findings to other systems with more complicated band structures were unjustified.

Possible existence of a band of extended states induced by inter-Landau-band mixing in quantum Hall system

The mixing of states with {\it opposite chirality} in quantum Hall system is shown to have delocalization effect. It is possible that extended states may form bands because of this mixing, as is shown through a numerical calculation on a two-channel network model. Based on this result, a new phase diagram with a narrow {\it metallic} phase separating two adjacent QH phases and/or separating a QH phase from the insulating phase is proposed. The data from recent non-scaling experiments is reanalyzed and shown that they seem to be {\it consistent} with the new phase diagram. However, due to finite-size effects, further study on large system size is still needed to conclude whether there are extended state bands in thermodynamic limit.

Coherent wave-packet evolution in coupled bands

We develop a formalism for treating coherent wave-packet dynamics of charge and spin carriers in degenerate and nearly degenerate bands. We consider the two-band case carefully in view of spintronics applications, where transitions between spin-split bands often occur even for relatively weak electromagnetic fields. We demonstrate that much of the semiclassical formalism developed for the single-band case can be generalized to multiple bands, and examine the nontrivial non-Abelian corrections arising from the additional degree of freedom. Along with the center of mass motion in crystal momentum and real space, one must also include a pseudo-spin to characterize the dynamics between the bands. We derive the wave packet energy up to the first order gradient correction and obtain the equations of motion for the real- and $k$-space center of the wave-packet, as well as for the pseudo-spin. These equations include the non-Abelian Berry curvature terms and a non-Abelian correction to the group velocity. As an example, we apply our formalism to describe coherent wave-packet evolution under the action of an electric field, demonstrating that it leads to electrical separation of up and down spins. A sizable separation will be observed, with a large degree of tunability, making this mechanism a practical method of generating a spin polarization. We then turn our attention to a magnetic field, where we recover Larmor precession, which cannot be obtained from a single-band point of view. In this case, the gradient energy correction can be regarded as due to a magnetic moment from the self-rotation of the wave-packet, and we calculate its value for the light holes in the spherical four-band Luttinger model.

Berry phase correction to electron density of states in solids

Liouville's theorem on the conservation of phase space volume is violated by Berry phase in the semiclassical dynamics of Bloch electrons. This leads to a modification of the phase space density of states, whose significance is discussed in a number of examples: field modification of the Fermi-sea volume, connection to the anomalous Hall effect, and a general formula for orbital magnetization. The effective quantum mechanics of Bloch electrons is also sketched, where the modified density of states plays an essential role.

Electric generation of spin in crystals with reduced symmetry

We propose a simple way of evaluating the bulk spin generation of an arbitrary crystal with a known band structure in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit. We show that, in the presence of an electric field, there exists an intrinsic torque term which gives rise to a nonzero spin generation rate. Using methods similar to those of recent experiments which measure spin polarization in semiconductors, this spin generation rate should be experimentally observable. The wide applicability of this effect is emphasized by explicit consideration of a range of examples: bulk wurtzite and strained zincblende (n-GaAs) lattices, as well as quantum well heterojunction systems.

Transition to Instability in a Periodically Kicked Bose-Einstein Condensate on a Ring

A periodically kicked ring of a Bose-Einstein condensate is considered as a nonlinear generalization of the quantum kicked rotor, where the nonlinearity stems from the mean field interactions between the condensed atoms. For weak interactions, periodic motion (anti-resonance) becomes quasiperiodic (quantum beating) but remains stable. There exists a critical strength of interactions beyond which quasiperiodic motion becomes chaotic, resulting in an instability of the condensate manifested by exponential growth in the number of noncondensed atoms. In the stable regime, the system remains predominantly in the two lowest energy states and may be mapped onto a spin model, from which we obtain an analytic expression for the beat frequency and discuss the route to instability. We numerically explore parameter regime for the occurrence of instability and reveal the characteristic density profile for both condensed and noncondensed atoms. The Arnold diffusion to higher energy levels is found to be responsible for the transition to instability. Similar behavior is observed for dynamically localized states (essentially quasiperiodic motions), where stability remains for weak interactions but is destroyed by strong interactions.

Raman-induced oscillation between an atomic and a molecular quantum gas

It has recently been demonstrated that quantum degenerate gases of very weakly bound molecules can be produced by atomic gases with Feshbach resonances. More strongly bound molecules can be produced with Raman photoassociation of a quantum gas, although this process has not yet been shown to produce a quantum degenerate molecular gas. In principle, Feshbach resonance and Raman photoassociation can be quantum-mechanically reversible, and lead to collective coherent phenomena such as Rabi cycling between an atomic and a molecular gas. However, such atom-molecular coherence has only partly been realized experimentally. Effects that may limit coherence include thermalizing elastic collisions, inelastic collisions, spontaneous Raman scattering, and pairing field formation. Here, we demonstrate a method that circumvents these limitations, based on Raman photoassociation of atoms in an optical lattice and driven into a Mott insulator state. We find that the Raman photoassociation transition is resolved into discrete lines corresponding to the quantized lattice site occupancies, and demonstrate that this provides a new method to accurately determine the distribution of site occupancies and the atom-molecule scattering length. Furthermore, we observe a Raman-induced oscillation of the central core of the gas, containing about 30% of the atoms, between an atomic and a molecular gas.

Charge Hall effect driven by spin-dependent chemical potential gradients and Onsager relations in mesoscopic systems

We study theoretically the spin-Hall effect as well as its reciprocal phenomenon (a transverse charge current driven by a spin-dependent chemical potential gradient) in electron and hole finite size mesoscopic systems. The Landauer-Buttiker-Keldysh formalism is used to model samples with mobilities and Rashba coupling strengths which are experimentally accessible and to demonstrate the appearance of measurable charge currents induced by the spin-dependent chemical potential gradient in the reciprocal spin-Hall effect. We also demonstrate that within the mesoscopic coherent transport regime the Onsager relations are fulfilled for the disorder averaged conductances for electron and hole mesoscopic systems.

Ab initio calculation of intrinsic spin Hall effect in semiconductors

Relativistic band theoretical calculations reveal that intrinsic spin Hall conductivity in hole-doped archetypical semiconductors Ge, GaAs and AlAs is large $[\sim 100 (\hbar/e)(Ωcm)^{-1}]$, showing the possibility of spin Hall effect beyond the four band Luttinger Hamiltonian. The calculated orbital-angular-momentum (orbital) Hall conductivity is one order of magnitude smaller, indicating no cancellation between the spin and orbital Hall effects in bulk semiconductors. Furthermore, it is found that the spin Hall effect can be strongly manipulated by strains, and that the $ac$ spin Hall conductivity in the semiconductors is large in pure as well as doped semiconductors.

Fidelity of a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We investigate fidelity, the Loschmidt echo, for a Bose-Einstein Condensate. It is found that the fidelity decays with time in various ways (exponential, Gaussian, and power-law), depending on the choice of initial coherent state as well as the parameters that determine properties of the underlying classical dynamics. Moreover, high fidelity is found for initial states lying in the regular region of a mixed-type phase space. A possible experimental scheme is suggested.

Compression of Atomic Phase Space Using an Asymmetric One-Way Barrier

We show how to construct asymmetric optical barriers for atoms. These barriers can be used to compress phase space of a sample by creating a confined region in space where atoms can accumulate with heating at the single photon recoil level. We illustrate our method with a simple two-level model and then show how it can be applied to more realistic multi-level atoms.

Statistical Mechanics of an Optical Phase Space Compressor

We describe the statistical mechanics of a new method to produce very cold atoms or molecules. The method results from trapping a gas in a potential well, and sweeping through the well a semi-permeable barrier, one that allows particles to leave but not to return. If the sweep is sufficiently slow, all the particles trapped in the well compress into an arbitrarily cold gas. We derive analytical expressions for the velocity distribution of particles in the cold gas, and compare these results with numerical simulations.

Minimal field requirement in precessional magnetization switching

We investigate the minimal field strength in precessional magnetization switching using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in under-critically damped systems. It is shown that precessional switching occurs when localized trajectories in phase space become unlocalized upon application of field pulses. By studying the evolution of the phase space, we obtain the analytical expression of the critical switching field in the limit of small damping for a magnetic object with biaxial anisotropy. We also calculate the switching times for the zero damping situation. We show that applying field along the medium axis is good for both small field and fast switching times.

Charge-Hall effect driven by spin force: reciprocal of the spin-Hall effect

A new kind of charge-Hall effect is shown. Unlike in the usual Hall effect, the driving force in the longitudinal direction is a spin force, which may originate from the gradient of a Zeeman field or a spin-dependent chemical potential. The transverse force is provided by a Berry curvature in a mixed position-momentum space. We can establish an Onsager relation between this effect and the spin-Hall effect provided the spin current in the latter is modified by a torque dipole contribution. This remarkable relation leads to new ways for experimental detection of spin accumulation predicted by the spin Hall effect.

Quantum Chaos of Bogoliubov Waves for a Bose-Einstein Condensate in Stadium Billiards

We investigate the possibility of quantum (or wave) chaos for the Bogoliubov excitations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in billiards. Because of the mean field interaction in the condensate, the Bogoliubov excitations are very different from the single particle excitations in a non-interacting system. Nevertheless, we predict that the statistical distribution of level spacings is unchanged by mapping the non-Hermitian Bogoliubov operator to a real symmetric matrix. We numerically test our prediction by using a phase shift method for calculating the excitation energies.

Adiabatic Geometric Phase for a General Quantum States

A geometric phase is found for a general quantum state that undergoes adiabatic evolution. For the case of eigenstates, it reduces to the original Berry's phase. Such a phase is applicable in both linear and nonlinear quantum systems. Furthermore, this new phase is related to Hannay's angles as we find that these angles, a classical concept, can arise naturally in quantum systems. The results are demonstrated with a two-level model.
