Dynamical generation of two-dimensional matter-wave discrete solitons

We suggest a method to experimentally obtain two-dimensional matter-wave discrete solitons with a {\it self-repulsive} BEC in optical lattices. At the edge of the Brillouin zone, a wave packet effective mass is negative which could be treated as inversion of the nonlinearity sign. Above critical nonlinearity this makes the wave packets collapse partially into localized modes with a chemical potential located in the gap between the first and the second bands. This critical nonlinearity is also associated with the smallest nonlinearity for which the discrete solitons are possible in the gap. Extensive numerical simulations for square and asymmetric honeycomb lattices in continuous model illustrate every stage of the process.

Spin-orbit coupling and Berry phase with ultracold atoms in 2D optical lattices

We show how spin-orbit coupling and Berry phase can appear in two-dimensional optical lattices by coupling atoms' internal degrees of freedom to radiation. The Rashba Hamiltonian, a standard description of spin-orbit coupling for two-dimensional electrons, is obtained for the atoms under certain circumstances. We discuss the possibility of observing associated phenomena, such as the anomalous Hall and spin Hall effects, with cold atoms in optical lattices.

Transition to Instability in a Kicked Bose-Einstein Condensate

A periodically kicked ring of a Bose-Einstein condensate is considered as a nonlinear generalization of the quantum kicked rotor. For weak interactions between atoms, periodic motion (anti-resonance) becomes quasiperiodic (quantum beating) but remains stable. There exists a critical strength of interactions beyond which quasiperiodic motion becomes chaotic, resulting in an instability of the condensate manifested by exponential growth in the number of noncondensed atoms. Similar behavior is observed for dynamically localized states (essentially quasiperiodic motions), where stability remains for weak interactions but is destroyed by strong interactions.

Anomalous Hall effect in paramagnetic two dimensional systems

We investigate the possibility of observing the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in two dimensional paramagnetic systems. We apply the semiclassical equations of motion to carriers in the conduction and valence bands of wurtzite and zincblende quantum wells in the exchange field generated by magnetic impurities and we calculate the anomalous Hall conductivity based on the Berry phase corrections to the carrier velocity. We show that under certain circumstances this conductivity approaches one half of the conductance quantum. We consider the effect of an external magnetic field and show that for a small enough field the theory is unaltered.

First Principles Calculation of Anomalous Hall Conductivity in Ferromagnetic bcc Fe

We perform a first principles calculation of the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic bcc Fe. Our theory identifies an intrinsic contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity and relates it to the k-space Berry phase of occupied Bloch states. The theory is able to account for both dc and magneto-optical Hall conductivities with no adjustable parameters.

Superfluidity of Bose-Einstein Condensate in An Optical Lattice: Landau-Zener Tunneling and Dynamical Instability

Superflow of Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice is represented by a Bloch wave, a plane wave with periodic modulation of the amplitude. We review the theoretical results on the interaction effects in the energy dispersion of the Bloch waves and in the linear stability of such waves. For sufficiently strong repulsion between the atoms, the lowest Bloch band develops a loop at the edge of the Brillouin zone, with the dramatic consequence of a finite probability of Landau-Zener tunneling even in the limit of a vanishing external force. Superfluidity can exist in the central region of the Brillouin zone in the presence of a repulsive interaction, beyond which Landau instability takes place where the system can lower its energy by making transition into states with smaller Bloch wavenumbers. In the outer part of the region of Landau instability, the Bloch waves are also dynamically unstable in the sense that a small initial deviation grows exponentially in time. In the inner region of Landau instability, a Bloch wave is dynamically stable in the absence of persistent external perturbations. Experimental implications of our findings will be discussed.

Intrinsic self-rotation of BEC Bloch wave packets

The semiclassical theory of Bloch wave packet dynamics predicts a self-rotation angular momentum in asymmetric periodic potentials, which has never been observed. We show how this is manifested in Bose-Einstein condensed atoms in optical lattices. Displacing the wave packet to a corner of the Brillouin zone we obtain a current distribution with a non-quantized angular momentum, independent of the size of the distribution. A weak interatomic interaction does not modify the results, affecting only the rate of spreading in the lattice. A strong repulsive interaction results in a collapse of the wavefunction into matter-wave lattice solitons.

The effect of inter-Landau-band mixing on extended states in quantum Hall system

The effect of inter-Landau-band mixing on electron localization in an integer quantum Hall system is studied. We find that mixing of localized states with {\it opposite chirality} tends to delocalize the states. This delocalization effect survives the quantum treatment. Extended states form bands because of this mixing, as we show through a numerical calculation on a two-channel network model. Based on this result, we propose a new phase diagram with a narrow {\it metallic} phase that separates any neighboring QH phases from each other and also separates each of them from the insulating phase. We reanalyzed the data from recent non-scaling experiments, and show that they are {\it consistent} with our theory.

Entanglement generation and multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms

We study the preparation and manipulation of states involving a small number of interacting particles. By controlling the splitting and fusing of potential wells, we show how to interconvert Mott-insulator-like and trapped BEC-like states. We also discuss the generation of "Schrödinger cat" states by splitting a microtrap and taking into practical consideration the asymmetry between the resulting wells. These schemes can be used to perform multiparticle interferometry with neutral atoms, where interference effects can be observed only when all the participating particles are measured.

DC-transport properties of ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As semiconductors

We study the dc transport properties of (Ga,Mn)As diluted magnetic semiconductors with Mn concentration varying from 1.5% to 8%. Both diagonal and Hall components of the conductivity tensor are strongly sensitive to the magnetic state of these semiconductors. Transport data obtained at low temperatures are discussed theoretically within a model of band-hole quasiparticles with a finite spectral width due to elastic scattering from Mn and compensating defects. The theoretical results are in good agreement with measured anomalous Hall effect and anisotropic longitudinal magnetoresistance data. This quantitative understanding of dc magneto-transport effects in (Ga,Mn)As is unparalleled in itinerant ferromagnetic systems.

Quantization and Corrections of Adiabatic Particle Transport in a Periodic Ratchet Potential

We study the transport of an overdamped particle adiabatically driven by an asymmetric potential which is periodic in both space and time. We develop an adiabatic perturbation theory after transforming the Fokker-Planck equation into a time-dependent hermitian problem, and reveal an analogy with quantum adiabatic particle transport. An analytical expression is obtained for the ensemble average of the particle velocity in terms of the Berry phase of the Bloch states. Its time average is shown to be quantized as a Chern number in the deterministic or tight-binding limit, with exponentially small corrections. In the opposite limit, where the thermal energy dominates the ratchet potential, a formula for the average velocity is also obtained, showing a second order dependence on the potential.

Adiabatic Theory of Nonlinear Evolution of Quantum States

We present a general theory for adiabatic evolution of quantum states as governed by the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and provide examples of applications with a nonlinear tunneling model for Bose-Einstein condensates. Our theory not only spells out conditions for adiabatic evolution of eigenstates, but also characterizes the motion of non-eigenstates which cannot be obtained from the former in the absence of the superposition principle. We find that in the adiabatic evolution of non-eigenstates, the Aharonov-Anandan phases play the role of classical canonical actions.

A Quantum Tweezer for Atoms

We propose a quantum tweezer for extracting a desired number of neutral atoms from a reservoir. A trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is used as the reservoir, taking advantage of its coherent nature, which can guarantee a constant outcome. The tweezer is an attractive quantum dot, which may be generated by red-detuned laser light. By moving with certain speeds, the dot can extract a desired number of atoms from the BEC through Landau-Zener tunneling. The feasibility of our quantum tweezer is demonstrated through realistic and extensive model calculations.

Quantum Step Heights in Hysteresis Loops of Molecular Magnets

We present an analytical theory on the heights of the quantum steps observed in the hysteresis loops of molecular magnets. By considering the dipolar interaction between molecular spins, our theory successfully yields the step heights measured in experiments, and reveals a scaling law for the dependence of the heights on the sweeping rates hidden in the experiment data on Fe$_8$ and Mn$_4$. With this theory, we show how to accurately determine the tunnel splitting of a single molecular spin from the step heights.

Anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic semiconductors

We present a theory of the anomalous Hall effect in ferromagnetic (Mn,III)V semiconductors. Our theory relates the anomalous Hall conductance of a homogeneous ferromagnet to the Berry phase acquired by a quasiparticle wavefunction upon traversing closed paths on the spin-split Fermi surface of a ferromagnetic state. It can be applied equally well to any itinerant electron ferromagnet. The quantitative agreement between our theory and experimental data in both (In,Mn)As and (Ga,Mn)As systems suggests that this disorder independent contribution to the anomalous Hall conductivity dominates in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

A metallic phase in quantum Hall systems

The electronic eigenstates of a quantum Hall (QH) system are chiral states. Strong inter-Landau-band mixings among these states can occur when the bandwidth is comparable to the spacing of two adjacent Landau bands. We show that mixing of localized states with opposite chirality can delocalize electronic states. Based on numerical results, we propose the existence of a metallic phase between two adjacent QH phases and between a QH phase and the insulating phase. This result is consistent with non-scaling behaviors observed in recent experiments on quantum-Hall-liquid-to-insulator transition.

Theory of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling

A nonlinear Landau-Zener model was proposed recently to describe, among a number of applications, the nonadiabatic transition of a Bose-Einstein condensate between Bloch bands. Numerical analysis revealed a striking phenomenon that tunneling occurs even in the adiabatic limit as the nonlinear parameter $C$ is above a critical value equal to the gap $V$ of avoided crossing of the two levels. In this paper, we present analytical results that give quantitative account of the breakdown of adiabaticity by mapping this quantum nonlinear model into a classical Josephson Hamiltonian. In the critical region, we find a power-law scaling of the nonadiabatic transition probability as a function of $C/V-1$ and $α$, the crossing rate of the energy levels. In the subcritical regime, the transition probability still follows an exponential law but with the exponent changed by the nonlinear effect. For $C/V>>1$, we find a near unit probability for the transition between the adiabatic levels for all values of the crossing rate.
