Topology and phase transition for EPYM AdS black hole in thermal potential

As we all know the local topological properties of thermodynamical systems can be expressed by the winding numbers as the defects. The topological number that is the sum of all winding numbers can be used to classify the global topological nature of thermodynamical systems. In this paper, we construct a kind of thermal potential and then put the Einstein-power-Yang-Mills AdS black hole in it. Through the analysis of the geometric characteristics of the thermal potential based on the complex analysis we find the topological number is an invariant that is same as shown in the way of the Duan's $ϕ$-mapping topological current [Sci. Sin. 9, 1072 (1979)]. Furthermore, we adopt the Kramer's escape rate method to investigate the intensity of the first-order phase transition.

Nonlinearity effect on Joule-Thomson expansion of Einstein-power-Yang-Mills AdS black hole

Considering the nonlinearity of the Yang Mills charge, we investigate the Joule-Thomson expansion for the Einstein-Power-Yang-Mills AdS black holes in the context of the gauge-gravity duality. Under this framework, we calculate the Joule-Thomson coefficient, describe all relevant inversion and isenthalpic curves in the temperature-pressure plane that determining in this manner the corresponding cooling and heating regions. Finally, we analyze the effect of the charge nonlinearity on the Joule-Thomson expansion.

Thickness dependence of superconductivity in FeSe films

The films of FeSe on substrates have attracted attention because of their unusually high-temperature (Tc) superconducting properties whose origins continue to be debated. To disentangle the competing effects of the substrate and interlayer and intralayer processes, we present here results of density functional theory (DFT)-based analysis of the electronic structure of unsupported FeSe films consisting of 1 to 5 layers (1L-5L). Furthermore, by solving the Bardeen-Schrieffer-Cooper (BCS) equation with spin-wave exchange attraction derived from the Hubbard model, we find the superconducting critical temperature Tc for 1L-5L and bulk FeSe systems in reasonable agreement with experimental data. Our results point to the importance of correlation effects in superconducting properties of single- and multi-layer FeSe films, independently of the role of substrate.

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE) mission: An overview

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE), dubbed "Xihe" - Goddess of the Sun, was launched on October 14, 2021 as the first solar space mission of China National Space Administration (CNSA). The CHASE mission is designed to test a newly developed satellite platform and to acquire the spectroscopic observations in the Hα waveband. The Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) is the scientific payload of the CHASE satellite. It consists of two observational modes: raster scanning mode and continuum imaging mode. The raster scanning mode obtains full-Sun or region-of-interest spectral images from 6559.7 to 6565.9 Å and from 6567.8 to 6570.6 Å with 0.024 Å pixel spectral resolution and 1 minute temporal resolution. The continuum imaging mode obtains photospheric images in continuum around 6689 Å with the full width at half maximum of 13.4 Å. The CHASE mission will advance our understanding of the dynamics of solar activity in the photosphere and chromosphere. In this paper, we present an overview of the CHASE mission including the scientific objectives, HIS instrument overview, data calibration flow, and first results of on-orbit observations.

Quantum spin Hall effect in two-dimensional metals without spin-orbit coupling

The quantum spin Hall effect has been observed in topological insulators using spin-orbit coupling as the probe, but it has not yet been observed in a metal. An experiment is proposed to measure the quantum spin Hall effect of an electron or hole in a two-dimensional (2D) metal by using the previously unexplored but relativistically generated 2D quantum spin Hall Hamiltonian, but without using spin-orbit coupling. A long cylindrical solenoid lies normally through the inner radius of a 2D metallic Corbino disk. The current $I_S$ surrounding the solenoid produces an azimuthal magnetic vector potential but no magnetic field in the disk. In addition, a radial electric field is generated across the disk by imposing either (a) a potential difference $Δv$ or (b) a radial charge current ${\bm I}$ across its inner and outer radii. Combined changes in $I_S$ and in either $Δv$ or ${\bm I}$ generate spontaneously quantized azimuthal charge and spin currents. The experiment is designed to measure these quantized azimuthal charge and spin currents in the disk consistently. The quantum Hamiltonians for experiments (a) and (b) are both solved exactly. A method to control the Joule heating is presented, which could potentially allow the quantum spin Hall measurements to be made at room temperature. Extensions of this design to an array of thermally-managed solenoids, each surrounded by thermally-managed stacks of 2D metallic Corbino disks, could function as a quantum computer that could potentially operate at room temperature.

Angular dependence of the upper critical induction of clean $s$- and $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconductors with self-consistent ellipsoidal effective mass and Zeeman anisotropies

We employ the Schr{ö}dinger-Dirac method generalized to an ellipsoidal effective mass anisotropy in order to treat the spin and orbital effective mass anisotropies self consistently, which is important when Pauli-limiting effects on the upper critical field characteristic of singlet superconductivity are present. By employing the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion into isotropic form, we then calculate the upper critical magnetic induction $B_{c2}(θ, ϕ, T)$ at arbitrary directions and temperatures $T$ for isotropic $s$-wave and for anisotropic $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting order parameters. As for anisotropic $s$-wave superconductors, the reduced upper critical field $b_{c2}$ is largest in the direction of the lowest effective mass, and is proportional to the universal orientation factor $α(θ,ϕ)$. However, for $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing, ${\bm B}_{c2}(π/2,ϕ,T)$ exhibits either a four-fold pattern with $C_4$ symmetry just below the transition temperature $T_c$ that rotates by $π/4$ as $T$ is lowered, or a two-fold pattern with $C_2$ symmetry, depending upon the planar effective mass anisotropy. This provides a new method to distinguish these pairing symmetries in clean unconventional superconductors.

Kondo Effect in a Spin-3/2 Fermi Gas

We investigate the Kondo effect of a spin-3/2 Fermi gas and give a detailed calculation of the impurity resistance and ground state energy based on the s-d exchange model. It is found that the impurity resistance increases logarithmically with the decrease of temperature in the case of antiferromagnetic coupling similar to the spin-1/2 system but has a larger resistance minimum value due to the increase of spin scattering channels. In the case of antiferromagnetic interaction, the ground state is still the Kondo singlet state while the septuplet state has the lowest energy for ferromagnetic coupling. And with the same antiferromagnetic s-d coupling parameter, the energy of the Kondo singlet state is lower than spin-1/2, which indicates that the larger spin, the easier it is to enter the Kondo-screened phase. This provides some theoretical support for the realization of the Kondo effect with ultra-cold atoms.

Inhibition of Current-spike Formation Based on Longitudinal Phase Space Manipulation for High-Repetition-Rate X-ray FEL

The formation of a double-horn current profile is a challenging issue in the achievement of electron bunch with high peak current, especially for high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) where more nonlinear and intricate beam dynamics propagation is involved. Here, we propose to correct the nonlinear beam longitudinal phase space distortion in the photoinjector section with a dual-mode buncher. In combination with the evolutionary many-objective beam dynamics optimization, this method is shown to be effective in manipulating the longitudinal phase space at the injector exit. Furthermore, the formation of the current spike is avoided after the multi-stage charge density modulation and electron bunch with a peak current of 1.6 kA is achieved for 100-pC bunch charge.Start-to-end simulations based on the Shanghai high-repetition-rate XFEL and extreme light facility demonstrate that the proposed scheme can increase the FEL pulse energy by more than 3 times in a cascading operation of echo-enabled harmonic generation and high-gain harmonic generation. Moreover, this method can also be used for longitudinal phase space shaping of electron beams operating at a high repetition rate to meet the specific demands of different researches.

A synchrotron-based kilowatt-level radiation source for EUV lithograph

A compact damping ring with limited circumference of about 160 m is proposed for producing kilowatt-level coherent EUV radiation. The electron bunch in the ring is modulated by a 257nm wavelength laser with the help of the angular dispersion induced micro-bunching method [C. Feng and Z. Zhao, Sci. Rep. 7, 4724 (2017)]. Coherent radiation at 13.5 nm with an average power of about 2.5 kW can be achieved with the state-of-the-art accelerator and laser technologies.

Reinforcement Learning based Negotiation-aware Motion Planning of Autonomous Vehicles

For autonomous vehicles integrating onto roadways with human traffic participants, it requires understanding and adapting to the participants' intention and driving styles by responding in predictable ways without explicit communication. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning based negotiation-aware motion planning framework, which adopts RL to adjust the driving style of the planner by dynamically modifying the prediction horizon length of the motion planner in real time adaptively w.r.t the event of a change in environment, typically triggered by traffic participants' switch of intents with different driving styles. The framework models the interaction between the autonomous vehicle and other traffic participants as a Markov Decision Process. A temporal sequence of occupancy grid maps are taken as inputs for RL module to embed an implicit intention reasoning. Curriculum learning is employed to enhance the training efficiency and the robustness of the algorithm. We applied our method to narrow lane navigation in both simulation and real world to demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms the common alternative due to its advantage in alleviating the social dilemma problem with proper negotiation skills.

Many-Objective Beam Dynamics Optimization for High-Repetition-Rate XFEL Photoinjector

SHINE, as the first hard x-ray free-electron-laser (FEL) facility in China, is designed to provide high-brightness FEL lasing under high-repetition-rate operation mode. In order to drive x-ray FEL pulses with high qualities, the photoinjector section is deployed to provide the specified electron beam with low transverse emittance and high brightness. Normally the multi-objective optimization algorithm is employed in the injector beam dynamics design. In this paper, the many-objective optimization algorithm NSGA-III is introduced to the injector physical design for optimizing the 4 beam quality properties for the first time. The results of the optimization are presented and analyzed. The application of NSGA-III can provide guidance for further physical research as well as improve the beam dynamics optimization efficiency.

Self-Amplification of Coherent Energy Modulation in Seeded Free-Electron Lasers

The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby significantly reducing the requirement of an external laser system. Driven by this scheme, we experimentally realize high harmonic generation in a seeded FEL using an unprecedentedly small energy modulation. An electron beam with a laser-induced energy modulation as small as 1.8 times the slice energy spread is used for lasing at the 7th harmonic of a 266-nm seed laser in a single-stage high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) setup and the 30th harmonic of the seed laser in a two-stage HGHG setup. The results mark a major step towards a high-repetition-rate, fully coherent X-ray FEL.

The Zeeman, Spin-Orbit, and Quantum Spin-Hall Interactions in Anisotropic and Low-Dimensional Conductors

When an electron or hole is in a conduction band of a crystal, it can be very different from 2, depending upon the crystalline anisotropy and the direction of the applied magnetic induction ${\bf B}$. In fact, it can even be 0! To demonstrate this quantitatively, the Dirac equation is extended for a relativistic electron or hole in an orthorhombically-anisotropic conduction band with effective masses $m_j$ for $j=1,2,3$ with geometric mean $m_g=(m_1m_2m_3)^{1/3}$. The appropriate Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations are extended to evaluate the non-relativistic Hamiltonian to $O({\rm m}c^2)^{-4}$, where ${\rm m}c^2$ is the particle's Einstein rest energy. For ${\bf B}||\hat{\bf e}_μ$, the Zeeman $g_μ$ factor is $2{\rm m}\sqrt{m_μ}/m_g^{3/2} + O({\rm m}c^2)^{-2}$. While propagating in a two-dimensional (2D) conduction band with $m_3\gg m_1,m_2$, $g_{||}<<2$, consistent with recent measurements of the temperature $T$ dependence of the parallel upper critical induction $B_{c2,||}(T)$ in superconducting monolayer NbSe$_2$ and in twisted bilayer graphene. While a particle is in its conduction band of an atomically thin one-dimensional metallic chain along $\hat{\bf e}_μ$, $g<<2$ for all ${\bf B}={\bf\nabla}\times{\bf A}$ directions and vanishingly small for ${\bf B}||\hat{\bf e}_μ$. The quantum spin Hall Hamiltonian for 2D metals with $m_1=m_2=m_{||}$ is $K[{\bf E}\times({\bf p}-q{\bf A})]_{\perp}σ_{\perp}+O({\rm m}c^2)^{-4}$, where ${\bf E}$ and ${\bf p}-q{\bf A}$ are the planar electric field and gauge-invariant momentum, $q=\mp|e|$ is the particle's charge, $σ_{\perp}$ is the Pauli matrix normal to the layer, $K=\pmμ_B/(2m_{||}c^2)$, and $μ_B$ is the Bohr magneton.

Quantum Spin Hall Effect in Electric and Magnetic Fields without Spin-Orbit Coupling

From the Dirac equation of an electron in an anisotropic conduction band, the anisotropy of its motion dramatically affects its interaction with applied electric and magnetic fields. The quantum spin Hall effect (QSHE) is observable in two-dimensional metals without spin-orbit coupling. The dimensionality of the Zeeman interaction plays an important role in the QSHE, and profoundly modifies many interpretations of measurements of the Knight shift and of the upper critical field in highly anisotropic superconductors.

Formation of localized magnetic states in a large-spin Fermi system

We extend the Anderson impurity model to a large-spin Fermi system with spin $f$=3/2, stimulated by the realization of large-spin ultracold Fermi atoms. The condition required for the spontaneous formation of local magnetic moments is examined and the ground state mean-field magnetic phase diagram is explored carefully. We find that the spin-3/2 Fermi system involves magnetic phase regions I, II, and III that correspond to one, two, and three particle/hole occupation, respectively. In addition, it is observed that all the three magnetic phases have four-fold degenerate ground states. Finally, the phase transition between the three phases seems to be of the first-order.

A relativistic electron in an anisotropic conduction band

The Dirac equation is extended for a relativistic electron in an orthorhombically-anisotropic conduction band. Its covariance is established with general proper and improper Lorentz transformations. In the non-relativistic limit, the kinetic and Zeeman energy terms of the Hamiltonian are both determined by the same three effective masses, and the quantum spin Hall effect is derived. This has important consequences for magnetic measurements of many classes of clean anisotropic semiconductors, metals, and superconductors. The Zeeman energy is vanishingly small for magnetic fields parallel to clean monolayers and in all directions in quasi-one-dimensional materials.

Realizing the Haldane Phase with Bosons in Optical Lattices

We analyze an experimentally realizable model of bosons in a zig-zag optical lattice, showing that by rapidly modulating the magnetic field one can tune interaction parameters and realize an analog of the Haldane phase. We explain how quantum gas microscopy can be used to detect this phase's non-local string order and its topological edge states. We model the detection process. We also find that this model can display supersolid correlations, but argue that they only occur at parameter values which would be challenging to realize in an experiment.

Cooper Pairing in A Doped 2D Antiferromagnet with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study the two-dimensional Hubbard model with the Rashba type spin-orbit coupling within and beyond the mean-field theory. The antiferromagnetic ground state for the model at half-filling and the Cooper pairing induced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near half-filling are examined based on the random-phase approximation. We show that the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed and the magnetic susceptibility turns out to be anisotropic in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. Energy spectrums of transverse spin fluctuations are obtained and the effective interactions between holes mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are deduced in the case of low hole doping. It seems that the spin-orbit coupling tends to form s+p-wave Cooper pairs, while the s+d-wave pairing is dominant when the spin-orbit coupling is absent.
