Missing Data Reconstruction in Remote Sensing image with a Unified Spatial-Temporal-Spectral Deep Convolutional Neural Network

Because of the internal malfunction of satellite sensors and poor atmospheric conditions such as thick cloud, the acquired remote sensing data often suffer from missing information, i.e., the data usability is greatly reduced. In this paper, a novel method of missing information reconstruction in remote sensing images is proposed. The unified spatial-temporal-spectral framework based on a deep convolutional neural network (STS-CNN) employs a unified deep convolutional neural network combined with spatial-temporal-spectral supplementary information. In addition, to address the fact that most methods can only deal with a single missing information reconstruction task, the proposed approach can solve three typical missing information reconstruction tasks: 1) dead lines in Aqua MODIS band 6; 2) the Landsat ETM+ Scan Line Corrector (SLC)-off problem; and 3) thick cloud removal. It should be noted that the proposed model can use multi-source data (spatial, spectral, and temporal) as the input of the unified framework. The results of both simulated and real-data experiments demonstrate that the proposed model exhibits high effectiveness in the three missing information reconstruction tasks listed above.

Learning a Dilated Residual Network for SAR Image Despeckling

In this paper, to break the limit of the traditional linear models for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image despeckling, we propose a novel deep learning approach by learning a non-linear end-to-end mapping between the noisy and clean SAR images with a dilated residual network (SAR-DRN). SAR-DRN is based on dilated convolutions, which can both enlarge the receptive field and maintain the filter size and layer depth with a lightweight structure. In addition, skip connections and residual learning strategy are added to the despeckling model to maintain the image details and reduce the vanishing gradient problem. Compared with the traditional despeckling methods, the proposed method shows superior performance over the state-of-the-art methods on both quantitative and visual assessments, especially for strong speckle noise.

Exploring the origins of the Dzyalloshinski-Moria interaction in MnSi

By using magnetization and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements, we have investigated the magnetic behavior of Mn_{1-x}Ir_{x}Si system to explore the effect of increased carrier density and spin-orbit interaction on the magnetic properties of MnSi. We determine estimates of the spin wave stiffness and the Dzyalloshinski-Moria, DM, interaction strength and compare with Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}Si and Mn_{1-x}Fe_{x}Si. Despite the large differences in atomic mass and size of the substituted elements, Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}Si and Mn_{1-x}Ir_{x}Si show nearly identical variations in their magnetic properties with substitution. We find a systematic dependence of the transition temperature, the ordered moment, the helix period and the DM interaction strength with electron count for Mn{1-x}Ir{x}Si, Mn_{1-x}Co_{x}Si, and Mn_{1-x}Fe_{x}Si indicating that the magnetic behavior is primarily dependent upon the additional carrier density rather than on the mass or size of the substituting species. This indicates that the variation in magnetic properties, including the DM interaction strength, are primarily controlled by the electronic structure as Co and Ir are isovalent. Our work suggests that although the rigid band model of electronic structure along with Moira's model of weak itinerant magnetism describe this system surprisingly well, phenomenological models for the DM interaction strength are not adequate to describe this system.

Impacts of Doping on Epitaxial Germanium Thin Film Quality and Si-Ge Interdiffusion

Ge-on-Si structures with three different dopants (P, As and B) and those without intentional doping were grown and annealed. Several different materials characterization methods have been performed to characterize the Ge film quality. All samples have a smooth surface (roughness < 1.5 nm), and the Ge films are almost entirely relaxed. On the other hand, B doped Ge films have threading dislocations above 1 x 10^8 cm-2. While P and As doping can reduce the threading dislocation density to be less than 10^6 cm-2 without annealing. The interdiffusion of Si and Ge of different films have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. A quantitative model of Si-Ge interdiffusion under extrinsic conditions across the full x_Ge range and with the dislocation mediated diffusion term was established. The Kirkendall effect has been observed. The results are of technical significance for the structure, doping, and process design of Ge-on-Si based devices, especially for photonic applications.

Insight-HXMT observations of the first binary neutron star merger GW170817

Finding the electromagnetic (EM) counterpart of binary compact star merger, especially the binary neutron star (BNS) merger, is critically important for gravitational wave (GW) astronomy, cosmology and fundamental physics. On Aug. 17, 2017, Advanced LIGO and \textit{Fermi}/GBM independently triggered the first BNS merger, GW170817, and its high energy EM counterpart, GRB 170817A, respectively, resulting in a global observation campaign covering gamma-ray, X-ray, UV, optical, IR, radio as well as neutrinos. The High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard \textit{Insight}-HXMT (Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope) is the unique high-energy gamma-ray telescope that monitored the entire GW localization area and especially the optical counterpart (SSS17a/AT2017gfo) with very large collection area ($\sim$1000 cm$^2$) and microsecond time resolution in 0.2-5 MeV. In addition, \textit{Insight}-HXMT quickly implemented a Target of Opportunity (ToO) observation to scan the GW localization area for potential X-ray emission from the GW source. Although it did not detect any significant high energy (0.2-5 MeV) radiation from GW170817, its observation helped to confirm the unexpected weak and soft nature of GRB 170817A. Meanwhile, \textit{Insight}-HXMT/HE provides one of the most stringent constraints (~10$^{-7}$ to 10$^{-6}$ erg/cm$^2$/s) for both GRB170817A and any other possible precursor or extended emissions in 0.2-5 MeV, which help us to better understand the properties of EM radiation from this BNS merger. Therefore the observation of \textit{Insight}-HXMT constitutes an important chapter in the full context of multi-wavelength and multi-messenger observation of this historical GW event.

Experimental unconditionally secure covert communication in dense wavelength-division multiplexing networks

Covert communication offers a method to transmit messages in such a way that it is not possible to detect that the communication is happening at all. In this work, we report an experimental demonstration of covert communication that is provably secure against unbounded quantum adversaries. The covert communication is carried out over 10 km of optical fiber, addressing the challenges associated with transmission over metropolitan distances. We deploy the protocol in a dense wavelength-division multiplexing infrastructure, where our system has to coexist with a co-propagating C-band classical channel. The noise from the classical channel allows us to perform covert communication in a neighbouring channel. We perform an optimization of all protocol parameters and report the transmission of three different messages with varying levels of security. Our results showcase the feasibility of secure covert communication in a practical setting, with several possible future improvements from both theory and experiment.

High speed self-testing quantum random number generation without detection loophole

Quantum mechanics provides means of generating genuine randomness that is impossible with deterministic classical processes. Remarkably, the unpredictability of randomness can be certified in a self-testing manner that is independent of implementation devices. Here, we present an experimental demonstration of self-testing quantum random number generation based on an detection-loophole free Bell test with entangled photons. In the randomness analysis, without the assumption of independent identical distribution, we consider the worst case scenario that the adversary launches the most powerful attacks against quantum adversary. After considering statistical fluctuations and applying an 80 Gb $\times$ 45.6 Mb Toeplitz matrix hashing, we achieve a final random bit rate of 114 bits/s, with a failure probability less than $10^{-5}$. Such self-testing random number generators mark a critical step towards realistic applications in cryptography and fundamental physics tests.

Experimental preparation and verification of quantum money

A quantum money scheme enables a trusted bank to provide untrusted users with verifiable quantum banknotes that cannot be forged. In this work, we report an experimental demonstration of the preparation and verification of unforgeable quantum banknotes. We employ a security analysis that takes experimental imperfections fully into account. We measure a total of $3.6\times 10^6$ states in one verification round, limiting the forging probability to $10^{-7}$ based on the security analysis. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of preparing and verifying quantum banknotes using currently available experimental techniques.

Bounds for fixed points on products of hyperbolic surfaces

For the product $S_1\times S_2$ of any two connected compact hyperbolic surfaces $S_1$ and $S_2$, we give a finite bound $\mathcal{B}$ such that for any self-homeomorphism $f$ of $S_1\times S_2$ and any fixed point class $F$ of $f$, the index $|ind(f, F)|\leq \mathcal{B}$, which is an affirmative answer for a special case of a question asked by Boju Jiang. Moreover, we also give bounds for the Lefschetz number $L(f)$ and the Nielsen number $N(f)$ of the homeomorphism $f$.

Longitudinal modes of spin fluctuations in iron-based superconductors

Iron-based superconductors can exhibit different magnetic ground states and are in a critical magnetic region where frustrated magnetic interactions strongly compete with each other. Here we investigate the longitudinal modes of spin fluctuations in an unified effective magnetic model for iron-based superconductors. We focus on the collinear antiferromagnetic phase (CAF) and calculate the behavior of the longitudinal modes when different phase boundaries are approached. The results can help to determine the nature of the magnetic fluctuations in iron-based superconductors.

Satellite-to-ground quantum key distribution

Quantum key distribution (QKD) uses individual light quanta in quantum superposition states to guarantee unconditional communication security between distant parties. In practice, the achievable distance for QKD has been limited to a few hundred kilometers, due to the channel loss of fibers or terrestrial free space that exponentially reduced the photon rate. Satellite-based QKD promises to establish a global-scale quantum network by exploiting the negligible photon loss and decoherence in the empty out space. Here, we develop and launch a low-Earth-orbit satellite to implement decoy-state QKD with over kHz key rate from the satellite to ground over a distance up to 1200 km, which is up to 20 orders of magnitudes more efficient than that expected using an optical fiber (with 0.2 dB/km loss) of the same length. The establishment of a reliable and efficient space-to-ground link for faithful quantum state transmission constitutes a key milestone for global-scale quantum networks.

Strategyproof Mechanisms for Additively Separable Hedonic Games and Fractional Hedonic Games

Additively separable hedonic games and fractional hedonic games have received considerable attention. They are coalition forming games of selfish agents based on their mutual preferences. Most of the work in the literature characterizes the existence and structure of stable outcomes (i.e., partitions in coalitions), assuming that preferences are given. However, there is little discussion on this assumption. In fact, agents receive different utilities if they belong to different partitions, and thus it is natural for them to declare their preferences strategically in order to maximize their benefit. In this paper we consider strategyproof mechanisms for additively separable hedonic games and fractional hedonic games, that is, partitioning methods without payments such that utility maximizing agents have no incentive to lie about their true preferences. We focus on social welfare maximization and provide several lower and upper bounds on the performance achievable by strategyproof mechanisms for general and specific additive functions. In most of the cases we provide tight or asymptotically tight results. All our mechanisms are simple and can be computed in polynomial time. Moreover, all the lower bounds are unconditional, that is, they do not rely on any computational or complexity assumptions.

Observation of Various and Spontaneous Magnetic Skyrmionic Bubbles at Room-Temperature in a Frustrated Kagome Magnet with Uniaxial Magnetic Anisotropy

Various and spontaneous magnetic skyrmionic bubbles are experimentally observed for the first time, at room temperature in a frustrated kagome magnet Fe3Sn2 with unixial magnetic anisotropy. The magnetization dynamics were investigated using in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, revealing that the transformation between different magnetic bubbles and domains are via the motion of Bloch lines driven by applied external magnetic field. The results demonstrate that Fe3Sn2 facilitates a unique magnetic control of topological spin textures at room temperature, making it a promising candidate for further skyrmion-based spintronic devices.

Mn-induced magnetic symmetry breaking and its correlation with the metal-insulator transition in bilayered Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7

Bilayered Sr3Ru2O7 is an unusual metamagnetic metal with inherently antiferromagnetic (AFM) and ferromagnetic (FM) fluctuations. Partial substitution of Ru by Mn results in the establishment of metal-insulator transition (MIT) at TMIT and AFM ordering at TM in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7. Using elastic neutron scattering we determined the effect of Mn doping on the magnetic structure and in-plane magnetic correlation lengths in Sr3(Ru1-xMnx)2O7 (x = 0.06 and 0.12). With increasing Mn doping (x) from 0.06 to 0.12 or decreasing temperatures for x=0.12, an evolution from an in-plane short-range to long-range double-stripe AFM ground state occurs. For both compounds, the onset of magnetic correlation with an anisotropic behavior coincides with the sharp rise of the electrical resistivity and the specific heat. Since it does not induce measurable lattice distortion, the double-stripe magnetic order with anisotropic spin texture breaks the symmetry from C4v crystal lattice to C2v magnetic sublattice. These observations shed new light on an age-old question of Slater versus Mott-type MIT.

Quantum random number generator based on twin beams

We produce two strings of quantum random numbers simultaneously from the intensity fluctuations of the twin beams generated by a nondegenerate optical parametric oscillator. Two strings of quantum random numbers with bit rates up to 60 Mb/s are extracted simultaneously with a suitable post-processing algorithm. By post-selecting the identical data from two raw sequences and using a suitable hash function, we also extract two strings of identical quantum random numbers. The obtained random numbers pass all NIST randomness tests. The presented scheme shows the feasibility of generating quantum random numbers from the intensity of a macroscopic optical field.

Magnetic properties of Dy nano-islands on graphene

We have determined the magnetic properties of epitaxially grown Dy islands on graphene/SiC(0001) that are passivated by a gold film (deposited in the ultra-high vacuum growth chamber) for {\it ex-situ} X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). Our sum-rule analysis of the Dy $M_{4,5}$ XMCD spectra at low temperatures ($T=15$ K) as a function of magnetic field assuming Dy$^{3+}$ (spin configuration $^6H_{15/2}$) indicate that the projection of the magnetic moment along an applied magnetic field of 5 T is 3.5(3) $μ_B$. Temperature dependence of the magnetic moment (extracted from the $M_5$ XMCD spectra) shows an onset of a change in magnetic moment at about 175 K in proximity of the transition from paramagnetic to helical magnetic structure at $T_{\rm H} =179$ K in bulk Dy. No feature at the vicinity of the ferromagnetic transition of hcp bulk Dy at $T_{\rm c}$ = 88 K is observed. However, below $\sim$130 K, the inverse magnetic moment (extracted from the XMCD) is linear in temperature as commonly expected from a paramagnetic system suggesting different behavior of Dy nano-island than bulk Dy.

Field test of entanglement swapping over 100-km optical fiber with independent 1-GHz-clock sequential time-bin entangled photon-pair sources

Realizing long distance entanglement swapping with independent sources in the real-world condition is important for both future quantum network and fundamental study of quantum theory. Currently, demonstration over a few of tens kilometer underground optical fiber has been achieved. However, future applications demand entanglement swapping over longer distance with more complicated environment. We exploit two independent 1-GHz-clock sequential time-bin entangled photon-pair sources, develop several automatic stability controls, and successfully implement a field test of entanglement swapping over more than 100-km optical fiber link including coiled, underground and suspended optical fibers. Our result verifies the feasibility of such technologies for long distance quantum network and for many interesting quantum information experiments.

1.064-um-band up-conversion single-photon detector

Based on the technique of periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguide, up-conversion single-photon detection at 1.064-μm is demonstrated. We have achieved a system photon detection efficiency (DE) of 32.5% with a very low noise count rate (NCR) of 45 counts per second (cps) by pumping with a 1.55-μm-band single frequency laser using the long-wavelength pumping technique and exploiting volume Bragg grating (VBG) as a narrow band filter. Replacing the VBG with a combination of adequate dielectric filters, a DE of up to 38% with a NCR of 700 cps is achieved, making the overall system more stable and practical. The up-conversion single-photon detector (SPD) operating at 1.064 μm can be a promising robust counter and find usage in many fields.
