Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

The nature of charged charmonium-like states $Z_c(3900)$ and its strange partner $Z_{cs}(3982)$

The observation of $Z_{cs}(3985)$ by BESIII in the $D_s^{*-}D^0$ and $D_s^{-}D^{*0}$ channel adds important dynamic information for a coherent understanding of both $Z_c(3900)$ and $Z_c(4020)$, as well as their strange partners $Z_{cs}(3985)$ and $Z_{cs}(4120)$, on the basis of heavy quark spin symmetry. With an overall short-ranged contact potential in SU(3) flavor symmetry we show that the pole structures can be extracted from the experimental data. Meanwhile, we show the key role played by the $S$-wave open thresholds in $e^+e^-$ annihilations which are correlated with the production of these $Z$ states in a hadronic molecule picture. Implications of their scalar heavy quark spin partners $W_{c0,1,2}$ and $W_{cs0,1,2}$ are also gained.

Hyperon Weak Radiative Decay

We revisit the hyperon weak radiative decays in the framework of the non-relativistic constituent quark model. This study confirms the nonlocal feature of the hyperon weak radiative transition operators which are dominated by the pole terms, and an overall self-consistent description of the available experimental data for the Cabibbo-favored hyperon weak radiative decays is achieved. It provides a natural mechanism for evading the Hara theorem, where sizeable parity-violating contributions can come from the intermediate orbital excitations. Cancellations between pole terms also explain significant SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking manifested by the experimental data. We also discuss several interesting selection rules arising from either the electromagnetic or the weak interaction vertices. These features suggest nontrivial relations among different hyperon decays.

Hadronic weak decays of $Λ_c$ in the quark model

The hadronic weak decays of $Λ_c$ are studied in the framework of a constituent quark model. With the combined analysis of the Cabbibo-favored processes, $Λ_c\to Λπ^+$, $Σ^0π^+$ and $Σ^+π^0$, we confirm that the non-factorizable transition mechanisms play a crucial role in the understanding of their compatible branching ratios. We emphasize that the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking effects, which is generally at the order of $1\sim 2\%$, can be amplified by the destructive interferences among the pole terms in the diagrams with internal conversion. Some contributions are sensitive to the spatial distribution of the scalar-isoscalar light-quark sector in the $Λ_c$, and its overlap with the light quarks in the final state hyperon. Namely, a compact diquark configuration is disfavored.

All-heavy tetraquarks

In this work we study the mass spectra of the fully-heavy tetraquark systems, i.e. $cc\bar{c}\bar{c}$, $bb\bar{b}\bar{b}$, $bb\bar{c}\bar{c}/cc\bar{b}\bar{b}$, $bc\bar{c}\bar{c}/cc\bar{b}\bar{c}$, $bc\bar{b}\bar{b}/bb\bar{b}\bar{c}$, and $bc\bar{b}\bar{c}$, within a potential model by including the linear confining potential, Coulomb potential, and spin-spin interactions. It shows that the linear confining potential has important contributions to the masses and is crucial for our understanding of the mass spectra of the fully-heavy tetraquark systems. For the fully-heavy tetraquarks $Q_1Q_2\bar{Q}_3\bar{Q}_4$ our explicit calculations suggest that no bound states can be formed below the thresholds of any meson pairs $(Q_1\bar{Q}_3)$-$(Q_2\bar{Q}_4)$ or $(Q_1\bar{Q}_4)$-$(Q_2\bar{Q}_3)$. Thus, we do not expect narrow fully-heavy tetraquark states to be existing in experiments.

Contributions of box diagrams and $Δ(1940)$ resonance to $K^0Σ^+$ photoproduction

We study first the box-diagram contribution to the $γp\,\rightarrow \,K^0Σ^+$ process to understand the anomaly of the kaon photoproduction cross section from CBELSA/TAPS experiment at Electron Stretcher Accelerator (ELSA), where the imaginary part of the scattering amplitude from the box-diagrams is calculated by using Cutkosky's rules in the on-shell approximation while the real part of the amplitude is derived by dispersion relation calculations. Together with the results of the K-MAID model, the contribution of the box-diagrams fails to provide the sudden drop of the differential cross-section between the $K^*\,Λ$ and $K^*\,Σ$ thresholds. In addition, we include the $Δ(1940)$ resonance in the process to complete the description of the differential cross-section. Combining the contributions from the K-MAID model, the box-diagrams and the $Δ(1940)$ resonance, we have obtained the theoretical differential cross-section the $γp\,\rightarrow \,K^0Σ^+$ process, which is compatible with the CBELSA/TAPS experimental data.

The mass splitting among the isospin multiplets of light vector mesons

By including the strong isospin symmetry breaking effects and the electromagnetic contributions between the pseudoscalar mesons, we calculate the phase shifts of the $P$-wave $ππ$ and $Kπ$ scattering up to $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$ in the framework of the SU(3) chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) and coupled channel inverse amplitude method. We re-fit the low energy constants with the present meson-meson scattering data and derive the mass differences for the charged and neutral iso-multiplets of $ρ$ and $K^{*}$. Our results show that the mass difference between $ρ^\pm$ and $ρ^0$ is very small while the mass difference between the charged and neutral $K^*$ can reach a relatively large value of $m_{K^{*0}}-m_{K^{*+}}= 2.91^{+1.43}_{-1.41}$ MeV. This full one-loop ChPT calculation would shed some light towards a better understanding of the long-standing puzzle about the $K^*$ mass splitting.

Internal particle width effects on the the triangle singularity mechanism in the study of the $η(1405)$ and $η(1475)$ puzzle

In this article, the analyticity of triangle loop integral with complex masses of internal particles is discussed in a new perspective, base on which we obtain the explicit width dependence of the absorptive part of the triangle amplitude. We reanalyze the decay pattern of $η(1405/1475)$ with the width effects included in the triangle singularity (TS) mechanism. Based on the present experimental information, we provide a self-consistent description of the $K\bar{K}π$, $ηππ$, and $3π$ decay channels for $η(1405/1475)$. Our results confirm the claim that the TS mechanism plays a decisive role in the understanding of the $η(1405)$ and $η(1475)$ puzzle. Namely, the observed differences of $η$ resonances within the mass region of $1.40\sim 1.48$ GeV are originated from the same state. For the isospin violated process $J/ψ\toγη(1405/1475)\to f_0(980)π\to 3π$, we identify an additional contribution to the $a_0(980)-f_0(980)$ mixing via the TS mechanism.

Fano resonance lineshapes in a waveguide-microring structure enabled by an air-hole

We propose and demonstrate, by simply inserting an air-hole in the waveguide side-coupling with a microring resonator (MRR), the transmission spectrum presents Fano lineshapes at all of the resonant modes. Measured from the fabricated devices, Fano lineshapes with slope rates over 400 dB/nm and extinction ratios over 20 dB are obtained. We ascribe it to the air-hole-induced phase-shift between the discrete resonant modes of the MRR and the continuum propagating mode of the bus-waveguide, which modifies their interference lineshapes from symmetric Lorentzian to asymmetric Fano. From devices with varied locations and diameters of the air-hole, different Fano asymmetric parameters are extracted, verifying the air-hole-induced phase-shifts. This air-hole-assisted waveguide-MRR structure for achieving Fano resonance lineshapes has advantages of simple design, compact footprint, large tolerance of fabrication errors, as well as broadband operation range. It has great potentials to expand and improve performances of on-chip MRR-based devices, including sensors, switchings and filters.

Dense Scale Network for Crowd Counting

Crowd counting has been widely studied by computer vision community in recent years. Due to the large scale variation, it remains to be a challenging task. Previous methods adopt either multi-column CNN or single-column CNN with multiple branches to deal with this problem. However, restricted by the number of columns or branches, these methods can only capture a few different scales and have limited capability. In this paper, we propose a simple but effective network called DSNet for crowd counting, which can be easily trained in an end-to-end fashion. The key component of our network is the dense dilated convolution block, in which each dilation layer is densely connected with the others to preserve information from continuously varied scales. The dilation rates in dilation layers are carefully selected to prevent the block from gridding artifacts. To further enlarge the range of scales covered by the network, we cascade three blocks and link them with dense residual connections. We also introduce a novel multi-scale density level consistency loss for performance improvement. To evaluate our method, we compare it with state-of-the-art algorithms on four crowd counting datasets (ShanghaiTech, UCF-QNRF, UCF_CC_50 and UCSD). Experimental results demonstrate that DSNet can achieve the best performance and make significant improvements on all the four datasets (30% on the UCF-QNRF and UCF_CC_50, and 20% on the others).

Visible narrow cusp structure in $Λ_c^+\to p K^- π^+$ enhanced by triangle singularity

A resonance-like structure as narrow as 10 MeV is observed in the $K^-p$ invariant mass distributions in $Λ_c^+\to p K^- π^+$ at Belle. Based on the large data sample of about 1.5 million events and the small bin width of just 1 MeV for the $K^-p$ invariant mass spectrum, the narrow peak is found precisely lying at the $Λη$ threshold. While lacking evidence for a quark model state with such a narrow width at this mass region, we find that this narrow structure can be naturally identified as a threshold cusp but enhanced by the nearby triangle singularity via the $Λ$-$a_0(980)^+$ or $η$-$Σ(1660)^+$ rescatterings.

Restoration of pseudo-spin symmetry in $N=32$ and $34$ isotones described by relativistic Hartree-Fock theory

Restoration of pseudo-spin symmetry (PSS) along the $N=32$ and $34$ isotonic chains and the physics behind are studied by applying the relativistic Hartree-Fock theory with effective Lagrangian PKA1. Taking the proton pseudo-spin partners $(\pi2s_{1/2},\pi1d_{3/2})$ as candidates, systematic restoration of PSS along both isotonic chains is found from sulphur (S) to nickel (Ni), while distinct violation from silicon (Si) to sulphur is discovered near the drip lines. The effects of the tensor-force components introduced naturally by the Fock terms are investigated, which can only partly interpret the systematics from calcium to nickel, but fail for the overall trends. Further analysis following the Schrödinger-like equation of the lower component of Dirac spinor shows that the contributions from the Hartree terms dominate the overall systematics of the PSS restoration, and such effects can be self-consistently interpreted by the evolution of the proton central density profiles along both isotonic chains. Specifically the distinct PSS violation is found to tightly relate with the dramatic changes from the bubble-like density profiles in silicon to the central-bumped ones in sulphur.

Templated synthesis of cyclic poly(ionic liquid)s

Charged cyclic polymers, e.g. cyclic DNAs and polypeptides, play enabling roles in organisms, but their synthesis was challenging due to the well known polyelectrolyte effect. To tackle the challenge, we developed a templated method to synthesize a library of imidazolium and pyridinium based cyclic poly(ionic liquid)s. Cyclic templates, cyclic polyimidazole and poly(2-pyridine), were synthesized first through ring-closure method by light-induced Diels-Alder click reaction. Through quaternization of cyclic templates followed by anion metathesis, the cyclic poly(ionic liquid)s were synthesized, which paired with varied counter anions.

Effects of transmutation elements in tungsten

Tungsten (W) is widely considered as the most promising plasma facing material (PFM), which will be used in nuclear fusion devices. Due to the transmutation reaction caused by the fusion neutron irradiation, transmutation elements (such as Re, Os, and Ta) are generated in the W-based PFM during the operation of nuclear fusion devices. In this paper, transmutation elements effects on mechanical properties of the W and the behavior of hydrogen/helium (H/He) atom in the W were investigated by using the first-principles calculation method. The results show that the ductility of the W is enhanced by transmutation elements if dislocation and other defects were ignored, while mechanical properties of the W incompletely depend on transmutation elements content. Compared with the pure W, the formation energy of the H/He in the W is reduced by transmutation elements, but the most favorable sites of the H/He in the W is not changed. Except for a repulsion between Ta and He in the W, the H/He in the W is attracted by transmutation elements. In addition, transmutation elements can change the best diffusion path of the H/He in the W and increase the diffusion rate of the H/He in W. This study provides a theoretical basis for the Tungsten (W) application, and further study on the effects of transmutation elements in the W will be needed.

Precise Micropatterning of a Porous Poly(Ionic Liquid) via Maskless Photolithography for High-Performance Non-Enzymatic H2O2 Sensing

Porous poly(ionic liquid)s (PILs) recently have been actively serving as a multifunctional, interdisciplinary materials platform in quite a few research areas, including separation, catalysis, actuator, sensor, and energy storage, just to name a few. In this context, the capability to photo-pattern PIL microstructures in a porous state on a substrate is still missing but is a crucial step for their real industrial usage. Here, we developed a method for in situ rapid patterning of porous PIL microstructures via a maskless photolithography approach coupled with a simple electrostatic complexation treatment. This breakthrough enables designs of miniaturized sensors. As exemplified in this work, upon loading Pt nanoparticles into porous PIL microstructures, the hybrid sensor showed outstanding performance, bearing both a high sensitivity and a wide detection range.

The impact of $S$-wave thresholds $D_{s1}\bar{D}_{s}+c.c.$ and $D_{s0}\bar{D}^*_{s}+c.c.$ on vector charmonium spectrum

By investigating the very closely lied $D_{s1}\bar{D}_{s}+c.c.$ and $D_{s0}\bar{D}^*_{s}+c.c.$ thresholds at about 4.43 GeV we propose that the $ψ(4415)$ and $ψ(4160)$ can be mixing states between the dynamic generated states of the strong $S$-wave $D_{s1}\bar{D}_{s}+c.c.$ and $D_{s0}\bar{D}^*_{s}+c.c.$ interactions and the quark model states $ψ(4S)$ and $ψ(2D)$. We investigate the $J/ψK\bar{K}$ final states and invariant mass spectrum of $J/ψK$ to demonstrate that nontrivial lineshapes can arise from such a mechanism. This process, which goes through triangle loop transitions, is located in the vicinity of the so-called "triangle singularity (TS)" kinematics. As a result, it provides a special mechanism for the production of exotic states $Z_{cs}$, which is the strange partner of $Z_c(3900)$, but with flavor contents of $c\bar{c}q\bar{s}$ (or $c\bar{c}s\bar{q}$) with $q$ denoting $u/d$ quarks. The lineshapes of the $e^+e^-\to J/ψK\bar{K}$ cross sections and $J/ψK \ (J/ψ\bar{K})$ spectrum are sensitive to the dynamically generated state, and we demonstrate that a pole structure can be easily distinguished from open threshold CUSP effects if an exotic state is created. A precise measurement of the cross section lineshapes can test such a mixing mechanism and provide navel information for the exotic partners of the $Z_c(3900)$ in the charmonium spectrum.

Some insights into the newly observed $Z_c(4100)$ in $B^0\to η_c K^+ π^-$ by LHCb

The newly reported exotic signal $Z_c(4100)$ by the LHCb Collaboration in the invariant mass spectrum of $η_cπ^-$ in $B^0\to η_c K^+ π^-$ has been a new experimental evidence for an exotic meson containing four constituent quarks. Although the present experimental information is very limited, we show that its correlations with some existing exotic candidates can be recognized. This signal can be either caused by final state interaction effects or a $P$-wave resonance state arising from the $D^*\bar{D}^*$ interaction. For the latter option its neutral partner will have exotic quantum numbers of $I^G(J^{PC})=1^-(1^{-+})$. This signal, if confirmed, would provide important clues for dynamics for producing multiquark systems in $B$ meson decays and $e^+e^-$ annihilations.

Quantitative analysis of tensor effects in the relativistic Hartree-Fock theory

Tensor force is identified in each meson-nucleon coupling in the relativistic Hartree-Fock theory. It is found that all the meson-nucleon couplings, except the $σ$-scalar one, give rise to the tensor force. The effects of tensor force on various nuclear properties can now be investigated quantitatively, which allows fair and direct comparisons with the corresponding results in the non-relativistic framework. The tensor effects on nuclear binding energies and the evolutions of the $Z,\,N = 8,\,20$, and $28$ magic gaps are studied. The tensor contributions to the binding energies are shown to be tiny in general. The $Z,\,N = 8$ and $20$ gaps are sensitive to the tensor force, but the $Z,\,N = 28$ gaps are not.
