What is the right form of the probability distribution of the conductance at the mobility edge?

The probability distribution of the conductance Pc(g) at the Anderson critical point is calculated. It is find that Pc(g) has a dip at small g in agreement with epsilon expansion results. The Pc(g) for the 3d system is quite different from the 2d quantum critical point of the integer quantum Hall effect. The universality or not of these distributions is of central importance to the field of disordered systems.

Scaling Properties of Conductance at Integer Quantum Hall Plateau Transitions

We investigate the scaling properties of zero temperature conductances at integer quantum Hall plateau transitions in the lowest Landau band of a two-dimensional tight-binding model. Scaling is obeyed for all energy and system sizes with critical exponent nu =7/3 . The arithmetic average of the conductance at the localization-delocalization critical point is found to be _c = 0.506 e^2 / h, in agreement with the universal longitudinal conductance predicted by an analytical theory. The probability distribution of the conductance at the critical point is broad with a dip at small G.

Localization in Highly Anisotropic Systems

The localization behavior of the Anderson model with anisotropic hopping integral t for weakly coupled planes and weakly coupled chains is investigated both numerically with the transfer matrix method and analytically within the self-consistent theory of localization. It is found that the mobility edge is independent of the propagating direction. However, the correlation (localization) length in the extended (localized) side of the transition can be very different for the two directions. The critical disorder W$_c$ is found to vary from t$^{1 \over 4}$ for weakly coupled planes to t$^{1 \over 2}$ for weakly coupled chains.

Scaling Properties in Highly Anisotropic Systems

Scaling of the conductances and the finite-size localization lengths is generalized to anisotropic systems and tested in two dimensional systems. Scaling functions of isotropic systems are recovered once the dimension of the system in each direction is chosen to be proportional to the localization length. It is also shown that the geometric mean of the localization lengths is a function of the geometric mean of the conductivities. The ratio of the localization lengths is proportional to the square root of the ratio of the conductivities, which in turn is proportional to the anisotropy strength t, in the weak scattering limit.

Optical Bistability in Colloidal Crystals

We present a one dimensional model for the nonlinear response of a colloidal crystal to intense light illumination along a high symmetry direction. The strong coupling between light and the colloidal lattice, via the electric gradient force acting upon the particles, induces a novel large optical nonlinearity. We obtain bistable behavior when the incident frequency is inside the stopband of the periodic structure, with decreasing switching intensity as the frequency increases. The transmission characteristics and the magnitude of the switching threshold intensity are also in good agreement with a recent experiment.

Charge Localization in Disordered Colossal-Magnetoresistance Manganites

The metallic or insulating nature of the paramagnetic phase of the colossal-magnetoresistance manganites is investigated via a double exchange Hamiltonian with diagonal disorder. Mobility edge trajectory is determined with the transfer matrix method. Density of states calculations indicate that random hopping alone is not sufficient to induce Anderson localization at the Fermi level with 20-30% doping. We argue that the metal-insulator transtion is likely due to the formation of localized polarons from nonuniform extended states as the effective band width is reduced by random hoppings and electron-electron interactions.

Suppression of the Kondo Effect in Quantum Dots by Even-Odd Asymmetry

We analyze here a model for single-electron charging in semiconductor quantum dots that includes the standard Anderson on-site repulsion (U) as well as the spin-exchange ($J_d$) that is inherently present among the electrons occupying the various quantum levels of the dot. We show explicitly that for ferromagnetic coupling ($J_d>0$), an s-d exchange for an S=1 Kondo problem is recovered. In contrast, for the antiferromagnetic case, $J_d<0$, we find that the Kondo effect is present only if there are an odd number of electrons on the dot. In addition, we find that spin-exchange produces a second period in the conductance that is consistent with experimental measurements.
