Combining Intra-Risk and Contagion Risk for Enterprise Bankruptcy Prediction Using Graph Neural Networks

Predicting the bankruptcy risk of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is an important step for financial institutions when making decisions about loans. Existing studies in both finance and AI research fields, however, tend to only consider either the intra-risk or contagion risk of enterprises, ignoring their interactions and combinatorial effects. This study for the first time considers both types of risk and their joint effects in bankruptcy prediction. Specifically, we first propose an enterprise intra-risk encoder based on statistically significant enterprise risk indicators for its intra-risk learning. Then, we propose an enterprise contagion risk encoder based on enterprise relation information from an enterprise knowledge graph for its contagion risk embedding. In particular, the contagion risk encoder includes both the newly proposed Hyper-Graph Neural Networks and Heterogeneous Graph Neural Networks, which can model contagion risk in two different aspects, i.e. common risk factors based on hyperedges and direct diffusion risk from neighbors, respectively. To evaluate the model, we collect real-world multi-sources data on SMEs and build a novel benchmark dataset called SMEsD. We provide open access to the dataset, which is expected to further promote research on financial risk analysis. Experiments on SMEsD against twelve state-of-the-art baselines demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model for bankruptcy prediction.

Single multimode fiber for in vivo light-field encoded nano-imaging

Super-resolution microscopy normally requiring complex and cumbersome optics is not applicable for in situ imaging through a narrow channel. Here, we demonstrate single hair-thin multimode fiber (MMF) endoscope (less than 250 $μm$) for in vivo light-field nano-imaging, which is called spatial-frequency tracking adaptive beacon light-field encoded nano-endoscopy (STABLE nano-endoscopy) that enables three-dimensional (3D) subcellular-scale imaging. Spatial-frequency tracking provides up to $10^3$ Hz disorder tracking that ensures stable imaging in long-haul MMFs (up to 200 m) under various conditions. Full-vector modulation and fluorescence emission difference are combined to enhance the imaging signal-to-noise ratio two times and to improve the resolution to sub-diffraction-limited 250 nm ($λ/3NA$). STABLE nano-endoscopy and white-light endoscopy (WLE) are integrated to achieve cross-scale in vivo imaging inside the lumen. This high-resolution and robust observation in a minimally invasive manner paves the way to gain a deeper understanding of the disease mechanisms and to bridge clinical and biological sciences.

Improve Ranking Correlation of Super-net through Training Scheme from One-shot NAS to Few-shot NAS

The algorithms of one-shot neural architecture search(NAS) have been widely used to reduce computation consumption. However, because of the interference among the subnets in which weights are shared, the subnets inherited from these super-net trained by those algorithms have poor consistency in precision ranking. To address this problem, we propose a step-by-step training super-net scheme from one-shot NAS to few-shot NAS. In the training scheme, we firstly train super-net in a one-shot way, and then we disentangle the weights of super-net by splitting them into multi-subnets and training them gradually. Finally, our method ranks 4th place in the CVPR2022 3rd Lightweight NAS Challenge Track1. Our code is available at https://github.com/liujiawei2333/CVPR2022-NAS-competition-Track-1-4th-solution.

PNC Enabled IIoT: A General Framework for Channel-Coded Asymmetric Physical-Layer Network Coding

This paper investigates the application of physical-layer network coding (PNC) to Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) where a controller and a robot are out of each other's transmission range, and they exchange messages with the assistance of a relay. We particularly focus on a scenario where the controller has more transmitted information, and the channel of the controller is stronger than that of the robot. To reduce the communication latency, we propose an asymmetric transmission scheme where the controller and robot transmit different amount of information in the uplink of PNC simultaneously. To achieve this, the controller chooses a higher order modulation. In addition, the both users apply channel codes to guarantee the reliability. A problem is a superimposed symbol at the relay contains different amount of source information from the two end users. It is thus hard for the relay to deduce meaningful network-coded messages by applying the current PNC decoding techniques which require the end users to transmit the same amount of information. To solve this problem, we propose a lattice-based scheme where the two users encode-and-modulate their information in lattices with different lattice construction levels. Our design is versatile on that the two end users can freely choose their modulation orders based on their channel power, and the design is applicable for arbitrary channel codes.

Orbital hybridization and electrostatic interaction in a double molecule transistor

Understanding the intermolecular interactions and utilize these interactions to effectively control the transport behavior of single molecule is the key step from single molecule device to molecular circuits1-6. Although many single molecule detection techniques are used to detect the molecular interaction at single-molecule level1,4,5,7,8, probing and tuning the intermolecular interaction all by electrical approaches has not been demonstrated. In this work, we successful assemble a double molecule transistor incorporating two manganese phthalocyanine molecules, on which we probe and tune the interaction in situ by implementing electrical manipulation on molecular orbitals using gate voltage. Orbital levels of the two molecules couple to each other and couple to the universal gate differently. Electrostatic interaction is observed when single electron changing in one molecule alters the transport behavior of the other, providing the information about the dynamic process of electron sequent tunneling through a molecule. Orbital hybridization is found when two orbital levels are put into degeneracy under non-equilibrium condition, making the tunneling electrons no longer localized to a specific molecule but shared by two molecules, offering a new mechanism to control charge transfer between non-covalent molecules. Current work offer a forelook into working principles of functional electrical unit based on single molecules.

Connectivity keeping caterpillars and spiders in bipartite graphs with connectivity at most three

A conjecture of Luo, Tian and Wu (2022) says that for every positive integer $k$ and every finite tree $T$ with bipartition $X$ and $Y$ (denote $t = \max\{|X|,|Y |\})$, every $k$-connected bipartite graph $G$ with $δ(G) \geq k + t$ contains a subtree $T' \cong T$ such that $κ(G-V (T')) \geq k$. In this paper, we confirm this conjecture for caterpillars when $k=3$ and spiders when $k\leq 3$.

TranS: Transition-based Knowledge Graph Embedding with Synthetic Relation Representation

Knowledge graph embedding (KGE) aims to learn continuous vectors of relations and entities in knowledge graph. Recently, transition-based KGE methods have achieved promising performance, where the single relation vector learns to translate head entity to tail entity. However, this scoring pattern is not suitable for complex scenarios where the same entity pair has different relations. Previous models usually focus on the improvement of entity representation for 1-to-N, N-to-1 and N-to-N relations, but ignore the single relation vector. In this paper, we propose a novel transition-based method, TranS, for knowledge graph embedding. The single relation vector in traditional scoring patterns is replaced with synthetic relation representation, which can solve these issues effectively and efficiently. Experiments on a large knowledge graph dataset, ogbl-wikikg2, show that our model achieves state-of-the-art results.

Revisit Dictionary Learning for Video Compressive Sensing under the Plug-and-Play Framework

Aiming at high-dimensional (HD) data acquisition and analysis, snapshot compressive imaging (SCI) obtains the 2D compressed measurement of HD data with optical imaging systems and reconstructs HD data using compressive sensing algorithms. While the Plug-and-Play (PnP) framework offers an emerging solution to SCI reconstruction, its intrinsic denoising process is still a challenging problem. Unfortunately, existing denoisers in the PnP framework either suffer limited performance or require extensive training data. In this paper, we propose an efficient and effective shallow-learning-based algorithm for video SCI reconstruction. Revisiting dictionary learning methods, we empower the PnP framework with a new denoiser, the kernel singular value decomposition (KSVD). Benefited from the advent of KSVD, our algorithm retains a good trade-off among quality, speed, and training difficulty. On a variety of datasets, both quantitative and qualitative evaluations of our simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. In comparison to a typical baseline using total variation, our method achieves around $2$ dB improvement in PSNR and 0.2 in SSIM. We expect that our proposed PnP-KSVD algorithm can serve as a new baseline for video SCI reconstruction.

Scalable universal tunable virtual-wavevector spatial frequency shift (TVSFS) super-resolution imaging

Developing a chip-based super-resolution imaging technique with large field-of-view (FOV), deep subwavelength resolution, and compatibility for both fluorescent and non-fluorescent samples is desired for material science, biomedicine, and life researches, etc. Previous on-chip super-resolution methods focus on either fluorescent or non-fluorescent imaging, putting an urgent requirement on the general imaging technique compatible with both of them. Here, we introduce a universal super-resolution imaging method based on tunable virtual-wavevector spatial frequency shift (TVSFS), realizing both labeled and label-free super-resolution imaging on a single delicately fabricated scalable photonic chip. Theoretically, with TVSFS, the diffraction limit of a linear optical system can be overcome, and the resolution can be improved more than three times, which is the limitation for most super-resolution imaging based on spatial frequency engineering. Diffractive units were fabricated on the chip's surface to provide a wavevector-variable evanescent wave illumination and induce tunable deep SFS in the samples' Fourier space. A resolution of λ/4.7 for the label-free sample and λ/7.1 for the labeled sample with a large FOV could be achieved with a CMOS-compatible process on a GaP chip. The large FOV, high-compatibility, and high-integration TVSFS chip may advance the fields like cell engineering, precision inspection in the industry, chemical research, etc.

Buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse

We investigate the buildup dynamics of broadband Q-switched noise-like pulse (QS-NLP) driven by slow gain dynamics in a microfiber-based passively mode-locked fiber laser. Based on shot-to-shot tracing of the transient optical spectra and qualitatively reproduced numerial simulation, we demonstrate that slow gain dynamics is deeply involved in the onset of such complex temporal and spectral instabilities of QS-NLP. The proposed gain dynamics model could contribute to deeper insight into such nonlinear phenomenon and transient dynamics simulation in ultrafast fiber laser.

Online Self-Evolving Anomaly Detection in Cloud Computing Environments

Modern cloud computing systems contain hundreds to thousands of computing and storage servers. Such a scale, combined with ever-growing system complexity, is causing a key challenge to failure and resource management for dependable cloud computing. Autonomic failure detection is a crucial technique for understanding emergent, cloud-wide phenomena and self-managing cloud resources for system-level dependability assurance. To detect failures, we need to monitor the cloud execution and collect runtime performance data. These data are usually unlabeled, and thus a prior failure history is not always available in production clouds. In this paper, we present a \emph{self-evolving anomaly detection} (SEAD) framework for cloud dependability assurance. Our framework self-evolves by recursively exploring newly verified anomaly records and continuously updating the anomaly detector online. As a distinct advantage of our framework, cloud system administrators only need to check a small number of detected anomalies, and their decisions are leveraged to update the detector. Thus, the detector evolves following the upgrade of system hardware, update of the software stack, and change of user workloads. Moreover, we design two types of detectors, one for general anomaly detection and the other for type-specific anomaly detection. With the help of self-evolving techniques, our detectors can achieve 88.94\% in sensitivity and 94.60\% in specificity on average, which makes them suitable for real-world deployment.

Secure Blockchain Platform for Industrial IoT with Trusted Computing Hardware

As a disruptive technology that originates from cryptocurrency, blockchain provides a trusted platform to facilitate industrial IoT (IIoT) applications. However, implementing a blockchain platform in IIoT scenarios confronts various security challenges due to the rigorous deployment condition. To this end, we present a novel design of secure blockchain based on trusted computing hardware for IIoT applications. Specifically, we employ the trusted execution environment (TEE) module and a customized security chip to safeguard the blockchain against different attacking vectors. Furthermore, we implement the proposed secure IIoT blockchain on the ARM-based embedded device and build a small-scale IIoT network to evaluate its performance. Our experimental results show that the secure blockchain platform achieves a high throughput (150TPS) with low transaction confirmation delay (below 66ms), demonstrating its feasibility in practical IIoT scenarios. Finally, we outline the open challenges and future research directions.

An Internal Arc Fixation Channel and Automatic Planning Algorithm for Pelvic Fracture

Fixating fractured pelvis fragments with the sacroiliac screw is a common treatment for unstable pelvis fracture. Due to the complex shape of the pelvis, sometimes a suitable straight screw fixation channel cannot be found using traditional methods, which increases the difficulty of pelvic fracture fixation. Therefore, there is an urgent need to find a new screw fixation method to improve the feasibility of pelvic fracture fixation. In this study, a new method of arc nail fixation is proposed to treat the pelvic fracture. An algorithm is proposed to verify the feasibility of the internal arc fixation channel (IAFC) in the pelvis, and the algorithm can calculate a relatively optimal IAFC in the pelvis. Furthermore, we compared the advantages and disadvantages of arc channel and straight channel through experiments. This study verified the feasibility of the IAFC, and the comparison of experimental results shows that the adaptability and safety of the arc channel fixation is better than the traditional straight sacroiliac screw.

IREM: High-Resolution Magnetic Resonance (MR) Image Reconstruction via Implicit Neural Representation

For collecting high-quality high-resolution (HR) MR image, we propose a novel image reconstruction network named IREM, which is trained on multiple low-resolution (LR) MR images and achieve an arbitrary up-sampling rate for HR image reconstruction. In this work, we suppose the desired HR image as an implicit continuous function of the 3D image spatial coordinate and the thick-slice LR images as several sparse discrete samplings of this function. Then the super-resolution (SR) task is to learn the continuous volumetric function from a limited observations using an fully-connected neural network combined with Fourier feature positional encoding. By simply minimizing the error between the network prediction and the acquired LR image intensity across each imaging plane, IREM is trained to represent a continuous model of the observed tissue anatomy. Experimental results indicate that IREM succeeds in representing high frequency image feature, and in real scene data collection, IREM reduces scan time and achieves high-quality high-resolution MR imaging in terms of SNR and local image detail.

Blockchain for Transactive Energy Management of Distributed Energy Resources in Smart Grid

This work presents the design and implementation of a blockchain system that enables the trustable transactive energy management for distributed energy resources (DERs). We model the interactions among DERs, including energy trading and flexible appliance scheduling, as a cost minimization problem. Considering the dispersed nature and diverse ownership of DERs, we develop a distributed algorithm to solve the optimization problem using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method. Furthermore, we develop a blockchain system, on which we implement the proposed algorithm with the smart contract, to guarantee the transparency and correctness of the energy management. We prototype the blockchain in a small-scale test network and evaluate it through experiments using real-world data. The experimental results validate the feasibility and effectiveness of our design.

Hubble parameter estimation via dark sirens with the LISA-Taiji network

The Hubble parameter is one of the central parameters in modern cosmology, which describes the present expansion rate of the universe. Their values inferred from the late-time observations are systematically higher than those from the early-time measurements by about $10\%$. To come to a robust conclusion, independent probes with accuracy at percent levels are crucial. Gravitational waves from compact binary coalescence events can be formulated into the standard siren approach to provide an independent Hubble parameter measurement. The future space-borne gravitational wave observatory network, such as the LISA-Taiji network, will be able to measure the gravitational wave signals in the Millihertz bands with unprecedented accuracy. By including several statistical and instrumental noises, we show that within 5 years operation time, the LISA-Taiji network is able to constrain the Hubble parameter within $1\%$ accuracy, and possibly beats the scatters down to $0.5\%$ or even better.

Blockchain-Based Decentralized Energy Management Platform for Residential Distributed Energy Resources in A Virtual Power Plant

The advent of distributed energy resources (DERs), such as distributed renewables, energy storage, electric vehicles, and controllable loads, \rv{brings} a significantly disruptive and transformational impact on the centralized power system. It is widely accepted that a paradigm shift to a decentralized power system with bidirectional power flow is necessary to the integration of DERs. The virtual power plant (VPP) emerges as a promising paradigm for managing DERs to participate in the power system. In this paper, we develop a blockchain-based VPP energy management platform to facilitate a rich set of transactive energy activities among residential users with renewables, energy storage, and flexible loads in a VPP. Specifically, users can interact with each other to trade energy for mutual benefits and provide network services, such as feed-in energy, reserve, and demand response, through the VPP. To respect the users' independence and preserve their privacy, we design a decentralized optimization algorithm to optimize the users' energy scheduling, energy trading, and network services. Then we develop a prototype blockchain network for VPP energy management and implement the proposed algorithm on the blockchain network. By experiments using real-world data-trace, we validated the feasibility and effectiveness of our algorithm and the blockchain system. The simulation results demonstrate that our blockchain-based VPP energy management platform reduces the users' cost by up to 38.6% and reduces the overall system cost by 11.2%.

Distributed Energy Trading Management for Renewable Prosumers with HVAC and Energy Storage

Heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems consume a large amount of energy in residential houses and buildings. Effective energy management of HVAC is a cost-effective way to improve energy efficiency and reduce the energy cost of residential users. This work develops a novel distributed method for the residential transactive energy system that enables multiple users to interactively optimize their energy management of HVAC systems and behind-the-meter batteries. Specifically, this method effectively reduces the cost of smart homes by employing energy trading among users to leverage their power usage flexibility without compromising the users' privacy. To achieve this goal, we design a distributed optimization algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to automatically operate the HVAC system and batteries, which minimizes the energy costs of users. Specifically, we decouple the optimization problem into a primal subproblem and a dual subproblem. The primal subproblem is solved by the users, and the dual subproblem is solved by the grid operator. Unlike the existing centralized method, our approach only uses the users' private information locally for solving the primal subproblem hence preserves the users' privacy. Using real-world data, we validate our proposed algorithm through extensive simulations in Matlab. The results demonstrate that our method effectively incentivizes the energy trading among the users to reduce users' peak load and reduce the overall energy cost of the system by 23% on average.
