Traffic Divergence Theory: An Analysis Formalism for Dynamic Networks

Traffic dynamics is universally crucial in analyzing and designing almost any network. This article introduces a novel theoretical approach to analyzing network traffic dynamics. This theory's machinery is based on the notion of traffic divergence, which captures the flow (im)balance of network nodes and links. It features various analytical probes to investigate both spatial and temporal traffic dynamics. In particular, the maximal traffic distribution in a network can be characterized by spatial traffic divergence rate, which reveals the relative difference among node traffic divergence. To illustrate the usefulness, we apply the theory to two network-driven problems: throughput estimation of data center networks and power-optimized communication planning for robot networks, and show the merits of the proposed theory through simulations.

A$^{3}$lign-DFER: Pioneering Comprehensive Dynamic Affective Alignment for Dynamic Facial Expression Recognition with CLIP

The performance of CLIP in dynamic facial expression recognition (DFER) task doesn't yield exceptional results as observed in other CLIP-based classification tasks. While CLIP's primary objective is to achieve alignment between images and text in the feature space, DFER poses challenges due to the abstract nature of text and the dynamic nature of video, making label representation limited and perfect alignment difficult. To address this issue, we have designed A$^{3}$lign-DFER, which introduces a new DFER labeling paradigm to comprehensively achieve alignment, thus enhancing CLIP's suitability for the DFER task. Specifically, our A$^{3}$lign-DFER method is designed with multiple modules that work together to obtain the most suitable expanded-dimensional embeddings for classification and to achieve alignment in three key aspects: affective, dynamic, and bidirectional. We replace the input label text with a learnable Multi-Dimensional Alignment Token (MAT), enabling alignment of text to facial expression video samples in both affective and dynamic dimensions. After CLIP feature extraction, we introduce the Joint Dynamic Alignment Synchronizer (JAS), further facilitating synchronization and alignment in the temporal dimension. Additionally, we implement a Bidirectional Alignment Training Paradigm (BAP) to ensure gradual and steady training of parameters for both modalities. Our insightful and concise A$^{3}$lign-DFER method achieves state-of-the-art results on multiple DFER datasets, including DFEW, FERV39k, and MAFW. Extensive ablation experiments and visualization studies demonstrate the effectiveness of A$^{3}$lign-DFER. The code will be available in the future.

Generative Probabilistic Time Series Forecasting and Applications in Grid Operations

Generative probabilistic forecasting produces future time series samples according to the conditional probability distribution given past time series observations. Such techniques are essential in risk-based decision-making and planning under uncertainty with broad applications in grid operations, including electricity price forecasting, risk-based economic dispatch, and stochastic optimizations. Inspired by Wiener and Kallianpur's innovation representation, we propose a weak innovation autoencoder architecture and a learning algorithm to extract independent and identically distributed innovation sequences from nonparametric stationary time series. We show that the weak innovation sequence is Bayesian sufficient, which makes the proposed weak innovation autoencoder a canonical architecture for generative probabilistic forecasting. The proposed technique is applied to forecasting highly volatile real-time electricity prices, demonstrating superior performance across multiple forecasting measures over leading probabilistic and point forecasting techniques.

Order-Optimal Regret in Distributed Kernel Bandits using Uniform Sampling with Shared Randomness

We consider distributed kernel bandits where $N$ agents aim to collaboratively maximize an unknown reward function that lies in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space. Each agent sequentially queries the function to obtain noisy observations at the query points. Agents can share information through a central server, with the objective of minimizing regret that is accumulating over time $T$ and aggregating over agents. We develop the first algorithm that achieves the optimal regret order (as defined by centralized learning) with a communication cost that is sublinear in both $N$ and $T$. The key features of the proposed algorithm are the uniform exploration at the local agents and shared randomness with the central server. Working together with the sparse approximation of the GP model, these two key components make it possible to preserve the learning rate of the centralized setting at a diminishing rate of communication.

Room-temperature continuous-wave pumped exciton polariton condensation in a perovskite microcavity

Microcavity exciton polaritons (polaritons) as part-light part-matter quasiparticles, garner significant attention for non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensation at elevated temperatures. Recently, halide perovskites have emerged as promising room-temperature polaritonic platforms thanks to their large exciton binding energies and superior optical properties. However, currently, inducing room-temperature non-equilibrium polariton condensation in perovskite microcavities requires optical pulsed excitations with high excitation densities. Herein, we demonstrate continuous-wave optically pumped polariton condensation with an exceptionally low threshold of ~0.6 W cm-2 and a narrow linewidth of ~1 meV. Polariton condensation is unambiguously demonstrated by characterizing the nonlinear behavior and coherence properties. We also identify a microscopic mechanism involving the potential landscape in the perovskite microcavity, where numerous discretized energy levels arising from the hybridization of adjacent potential minima enhance the polariton relaxation, facilitating polariton condensate formation. Our findings lay the foundation for the next-generation energy-efficient polaritonic devices operating at room temperature.

Comparative Analysis of ImageNet Pre-Trained Deep Learning Models and DINOv2 in Medical Imaging Classification

Medical image analysis frequently encounters data scarcity challenges. Transfer learning has been effective in addressing this issue while conserving computational resources. The recent advent of foundational models like the DINOv2, which uses the vision transformer architecture, has opened new opportunities in the field and gathered significant interest. However, DINOv2's performance on clinical data still needs to be verified. In this paper, we performed a glioma grading task using three clinical modalities of brain MRI data. We compared the performance of various pre-trained deep learning models, including those based on ImageNet and DINOv2, in a transfer learning context. Our focus was on understanding the impact of the freezing mechanism on performance. We also validated our findings on three other types of public datasets: chest radiography, fundus radiography, and dermoscopy. Our findings indicate that in our clinical dataset, DINOv2's performance was not as strong as ImageNet-based pre-trained models, whereas in public datasets, DINOv2 generally outperformed other models, especially when using the frozen mechanism. Similar performance was observed with various sizes of DINOv2 models across different tasks. In summary, DINOv2 is viable for medical image classification tasks, particularly with data resembling natural images. However, its effectiveness may vary with data that significantly differs from natural images such as MRI. In addition, employing smaller versions of the model can be adequate for medical task, offering resource-saving benefits. Random Exploration in Bayesian Optimization: Order-Optimal Regret and Computational Efficiency

We consider Bayesian optimization using Gaussian Process models, also referred to as kernel-based bandit optimization. We study the methodology of exploring the domain using random samples drawn from a distribution. We show that this random exploration approach achieves the optimal error rates. Our analysis is based on novel concentration bounds in an infinite dimensional Hilbert space established in this work, which may be of independent interest. We further develop an algorithm based on random exploration with domain shrinking and establish its order-optimal regret guarantees under both noise-free and noisy settings. In the noise-free setting, our analysis closes the existing gap in regret performance and thereby resolves a COLT open problem. The proposed algorithm also enjoys a computational advantage over prevailing methods due to the random exploration that obviates the expensive optimization of a non-convex acquisition function for choosing the query points at each iteration.

Tailoring coherent microwave emission from a solid-state hybrid system for room-temperature microwave quantum electronics

Quantum electronics operating in the microwave domain are burgeoning and becoming essential building blocks of quantum computers, sensors and communication devices. However, the field of microwave quantum electronics has long been dominated by the need for cryogenic conditions to maintain the delicate quantum characteristics. Here we report on a solid-state hybrid system, constituted by a photo-excited pentacene triplet spin ensemble coupled to a dielectric resonator, that is for the first time capable of both coherent microwave quantum amplification and oscillation at X band via the masing process at room temperature. By incorporating external driving and active dissipation control into the hybrid system, we achieve efficient tuning of the maser emission characteristics at around 9.4 GHz, which is key to optimizing the performance of the maser device. Our work not only pushes the boundaries of the operating frequency and functionality of the existing pentacene masers, but also demonstrate a universal route for controlling the masing process at room temperature, highlighting opportunities for optimizing emerging solid-state masers for quantum information processing and communication.

Ultra-low threshold pH sensor based on a whispering gallery mode microbubble resonator

Laser sensing has a wide range of applications. In this paper, we propose a pH sensing laser with an ultra-low threshold and low sample consumption based on a whispering-gallery-mode microbubble resonator. Rhodamine 6G aqueous solutions with different pH values are used as the lasing gain media, which are injected through the microfluidic channel and interact with the high-quality-factor microbubble resonator to achieve lasing. Subtle pH changes of the aqueous solution lead to changes in lasing intensity in real time and the threshold reaches a minimum of 0.091 uJ/mm2. The low pump energy density effectively avoids the self-aggregation and photobleaching effects of dye molecules present in high-concentration rhodamine 6G solutions. The lasing characteristics under different pH conditions were determined experimentally and theoretically, and the results are in good agreement. Due to the deprotonation of amino groups in highly alkaline environments, the lasing threshold is highly dependent on the pH of rhodamine 6G aqueous solutions. In the pH range of 10.16-13.14, the lasing intensity changes considerably with the increasing pH. The proposed pH-sensing laser exhibits a fast response time, low toxicity, and a high signal-to-noise ratio, making it promising for highly sensitive alkaline detection in biological applications.

Variation of multi-Slater determinants in antisymmetrized molecular dynamics and its application to $^{10}$Be with various clustering

We propose a method to optimize the multi-Slater determinants of the antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD) in the linear combination form and apply it to the neutron-rich $^{10}$Be nucleus. The individual Slater determinants and their weights in the superposition are determined simultaneously according to the variational principle of the energy of the total wave function. The multi-AMD basis states of $^{10}$Be show various cluster structures as well as the shell-model type. In the cluster configurations, different intercluster distances are superposed automatically indicating the role of the generator coordinates. We further introduce a procedure to obtain the configurations for the excited states imposing the orthogonal condition to the ground-state configurations. In the excited states of $^{10}$Be, the linear-chain-like structure is confirmed consisting of various clusters. The energy spectrum using the obtained basis states reproduces the experiments. The present framework can be the method to find the optimal multi-configuration for nuclear ground and excited states.

Topology Recoverability Prediction for Ad-Hoc Robot Networks: A Data-Driven Fault-Tolerant Approach

Faults occurring in ad-hoc robot networks may fatally perturb their topologies leading to disconnection of subsets of those networks. Optimal topology synthesis is generally resource-intensive and time-consuming to be done in real time for large ad-hoc robot networks. One should only perform topology re-computations if the probability of topology recoverability after the occurrence of any fault surpasses that of its irrecoverability. We formulate this problem as a binary classification problem. Then, we develop a two-pathway data-driven model based on Bayesian Gaussian mixture models that predicts the solution to a typical problem by two different pre-fault and post-fault prediction pathways. The results, obtained by the integration of the predictions of those pathways, clearly indicate the success of our model in solving the topology (ir)recoverability prediction problem compared to the best of current strategies found in the literature.

Parallel compressive super-resolution imaging with wide field-of-view based on physics enhanced network

Achieving both high-performance and wide field-of-view (FOV) super-resolution imaging has been attracting increasing attention in recent years. However, such goal suffers from long reconstruction time and huge storage space. Parallel compressive imaging (PCI) provides an efficient solution, but the super-resolution quality and imaging speed are strongly dependent on precise optical transfer function (OTF), modulation masks and reconstruction algorithm. In this work, we propose a wide FOV parallel compressive super-resolution imaging approach based on physics enhanced network. By training the network with the prior OTF of an arbitrary 128x128-pixel region and fine-tuning the network with other OTFs within rest regions of FOV, we realize both mask optimization and super-resolution imaging with up to 1020x1500 wide FOV. Numerical simulations and practical experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed approach. We achieve high-quality reconstruction with 4x4 times super-resolution enhancement using only three designed masks to reach real-time imaging speed. The proposed approach promotes the technology of rapid imaging for super-resolution and wide FOV, ranging from infrared to Terahertz.

Can 5G NR Sidelink communications support wireless augmented reality?

Smart glasses that support augmented reality (AR) have the potential to become the consumer's primary medium of connecting to the future internet. For the best quality of user experience, AR glasses must have a small form factor and long battery life, while satisfying the data rate and latency requirements of AR applications. To extend the AR glasses' battery life, the computation and processing involved in AR may be offloaded to a companion device, such as a smartphone, through a wireless connection. Sidelink (SL), i.e., the D2D communication interface of 5G NR, is a potential candidate for this wireless link. In this paper, we use system-level simulations to analyze the feasibility of NR SL for supporting AR. Our simulator incorporates the PHY layer structure and MAC layer resource scheduling of 3GPP SL, standard 3GPP channel models, and MCS configurations. Our results suggest that the current SL standard specifications are insufficient for high-end AR use cases with heavy interaction but can support simpler previews and file transfers. We further propose two enhancements to SL resource allocation, which have the potential to offer significant performance improvements for AR applications.

Microscopic investigation of one- and two-proton decay from the excited states of 10C

We present microscopic cluster model calculations for the 1p and 2p decays of the 0+2 and 2+2 states of 10C. With the R-matrix method, we have estimated the decay widths. The obtained 1p and 2p decay widths are in good agreement with the recent experimental data and support the validity of the di-proton approximation for the 2p decay of 10C(0+2). We also show the suppression of the 1p decay of the 10C(0+2) state due to the structure mismatch with the decay channel.

Enhancing Psychological Counseling with Large Language Model: A Multifaceted Decision-Support System for Non-Professionals

In the contemporary landscape of social media, an alarming number of users express negative emotions, some of which manifest as strong suicidal intentions. This situation underscores a profound need for trained psychological counselors who can enact effective mental interventions. However, the development of these professionals is often an imperative but time-consuming task. Consequently, the mobilization of non-professionals or volunteers in this capacity emerges as a pressing concern. Leveraging the capabilities of artificial intelligence, and in particular, the recent advances in large language models, offers a viable solution to this challenge. This paper introduces a novel model constructed on the foundation of large language models to fully assist non-professionals in providing psychological interventions on online user discourses. This framework makes it plausible to harness the power of non-professional counselors in a meaningful way. A comprehensive study was conducted involving ten professional psychological counselors of varying expertise, evaluating the system across five critical dimensions. The findings affirm that our system is capable of analyzing patients' issues with relative accuracy and proffering professional-level strategies recommendations, thereby enhancing support for non-professionals. This research serves as a compelling validation of the application of large language models in the field of psychology and lays the groundwork for a new paradigm of community-based mental health support.

Co-optimizing Consumption and EV Charging under Net Energy Metering

We consider the co-optimization of flexible household consumption, electric vehicle charging, and behind-the-meter distributed energy resources under the net energy metering tariff. Using a stochastic dynamic programming formulation, we show that the solution to the dynamic programming co-optimization is a procrastination threshold policy that delays and minimizes electricity purchasing for EV charging in each time interval. The policy thresholds can be computed off-line, simplifying the continuous action space dynamic optimization to decoupled closed-form charging and consumption decisions. Empirical studies using renewable, consumption, and EV data demonstrate the benefits of co-optimization.

A Communication-Efficient Adaptive Algorithm for Federated Learning under Cumulative Regret

We consider the problem of online stochastic optimization in a distributed setting with $M$ clients connected through a central server. We develop a distributed online learning algorithm that achieves order-optimal cumulative regret with low communication cost measured in the total number of bits transmitted over the entire learning horizon. This is in contrast to existing studies which focus on the offline measure of simple regret for learning efficiency. The holistic measure for communication cost also departs from the prevailing approach that \emph{separately} tackles the communication frequency and the number of bits in each communication round.
