Detect Spinons via Spin Transport

Existence of spinons is the defining property of quantum spin liquids. These exotic excitations have (fractionalized) spin quantum number and no electric charge, and have been proposed to form Fermi surfaces in the recently discovered organic spin liquid candidates. However direct probes for them are still lacking. In this paper we propose to experimentally identify the spinons by measuring the spin current flowing through the spin liquid candidate materials, which would be a direct test for the existence of spin-carrying mobile excitations. By the nonequilibrium Green function technique we evaluate the spin current through the interface between a Mott insulator and a metal under a spin bias, and find that different kinds of Mott insulators, including quantum spin liquids, can be distinguished by different relations between the spin bias and spin current, In the end we will also discuss relations to experiments and estimate experimentally relevant parameters.

Bipolaronic blockade effect in quantum dots with negative charging energy

We investigate single-electron transport through quantum dots with negative charging energy induced by a polaronic energy shift. For weak dot-lead tunnel couplings, we demonstrate a bipolaronic blockade effect at low biases which suppresses the oscillating linear conductance, while the conductance resonances under large biases are enhanced. Novel conductance plateau develops when the coupling asymmetry is introduced, with its height and width tuned by the coupling strength and external magnetic field. It is further shown that the amplitude ratio of magnetic-split conductance peaks changes from 3 to 1for increasing coupling asymmetry. Though we demonstrate all these transport phenomena in the low-order single-electron tunneling regime, they are already strikingly different from the usual Coulomb blockade physics and are easy to observe experimentally.

The spin-polarized $ν=0$ state of graphene: a spin superconductor

We study the spin-polarized $ν=0$ Landau-level state of graphene. Due to the electron-hole attractive interaction, electrons and holes can bound into pairs. These pairs can then condense into a spin-triplet superfluid ground state: a spin superconductor state. In this state, a gap opens up in the edge bands as well as in the bulk bands, thus it is a charge insulator, but it can carry the spin current without dissipation. These results can well explain the insulating behavior of the spin-polarized $ν=0$ state in the recent experiments.

One-dimensional quantum channel in a graphene line defect

Using a tight-binding model, we study a line defect in graphene where a bulk energy gap is opened by sublattice symmetry breaking. It is found that sublattice symmetry breaking may induce many configurations that correspond to different band spectra. In particular, a gapless state is observed for a configuration which hold a mirror symmetry with respect to the line defect. We find that this gapless state originates from the line defect and is independent of the width of the graphene ribbon, the location of the line defect, and the potentials in the edges of the ribbon. In particular, the gapless state can be controlled by the gate voltage embedded below the line defect. Finally, this result is supported with conductance calculations. This study shows how a quantum channel could be constructed using a line defect, and how the quantum channel can be controlled by tuning the gate voltage embedded below the line defect.

A controllable valley polarization in Graphene

The electron transport of different conical valleys is investigated in graphene with extended line-defects. Intriguingly, the electron with a definite incident angle can be completely modulated into one conical valley by a resonator which consists of several paralleling line-defects. The related incident angle can be controlled easily by tuning the parameters of the resonator. Therefore, a controllable 100% valley polarization, as well as the detection of the valley polarization, can be realized conveniently by tuning the number of line-defects and the distance between two nearest neighbouring line-defects. This fascinating finding opens a way to realize the valley polarization by line-defects. With the advancement of experimental technologies, this resonator is promising to be realized and thus plays a key role in graphene valleytronics.

Disorder induced field effect transistor in bilayer and trilayer graphene

We propose use of disorder to produce a field effect transistor (FET) in biased bilayer and trilayer graphene. Modulation of the bias voltage can produce large variations in the conductance when the disorder's effects are confined to only one of the graphene layers. This effect is based on the bias voltage's ability to select which of the graphene layers carries current, and is not tied to the presence of a gap in the density of states. In particular, we demonstrate this effect in models of gapless ABA-stacked trilayer graphene, gapped ABC-stacked trilayer graphene, and gapped bilayer graphene.

Josephson junction on one edge of a two dimensional topological insulator affected by magnetic impurity

Current-phase relation in a Josephson junction formed by putting two s-wave superconductors on the same edge of a two dimensional topological insulator is investigated. We consider the case that the junction length is finite and magnetic impurity exists. The similarity and difference with conventional Josephson junction is discussed. The current is calculated in the semiconductor picture. Both the $2π$- and $4π$-period current-phase relations ($I_{2π}(ϕ), I_{4π}(ϕ)$) are studied. There is a sharp jump at $ϕ=π$ and $ϕ=2π$ for $I_{2π}$ and $I_{4π}$ respectively in the clean junction. For $I_{2π}$, the sharp jump is robust against impurity strength and distribution. However for $I_{4π}$, the impurity makes the jump at $ϕ=2π$ smooth. The critical (maximum) current of $I_{2π}$ is given and we find it will be increased by asymmetrical distribution of impurity.

The dependence of topological Anderson insulator on the type of disorder

This paper details the investigation of the influence of different disorders in two-dimensional topological insulator systems. Unlike the phase transitions to topological Anderson insulator induced by normal Anderson disorder, a different physical picture arises when bond disorder is considered. Using Born approximation theory, an explanation is given as to why bond disorder plays a different role in phase transition than does Anderson disorder. By comparing phase diagrams, conductance, conductance fluctuations, and the localization length for systems with different types of disorder, a consistent conclusion is obtained. The results indicate that a topological Anderson insulator is dependent on the type of disorder. These results are important for the doping processes used in preparation of topological insulators.

Universal scheme to generate metal-insulator transition in disordered systems

We propose a scheme to generate metal-insulator transition in random binary layer (RBL) model, which is constructed by randomly assigning two types of layers. Based on a tight-binding Hamiltonian, the localization length is calculated for a variety of RBLs with different cross section geometries by using the transfer-matrix method. Both analytical and numerical results show that a band of extended states could appear in the RBLs and the systems behave as metals by properly tuning the model parameters, due to the existence of a completely ordered subband, leading to a metal-insulator transition in parameter space. Furthermore, the extended states are irrespective of the diagonal and off-diagonal disorder strengths. Our results can be generalized to two- and three-dimensional disordered systems with arbitrary layer structures, and may be realized in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Sequence-dependent spin-selective tunneling along double-stranded DNA

We report spin-selective tunneling of electrons along natural and artificial double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) sandwiched by nonmagnetic leads. The results reveal that the spin polarization strongly depends on the dsDNA sequence and is dominated by its end segment. Both genomic and artificial dsDNA could be efficient spin filters. The spin-filtering effects are sensitive to point mutation which occurs in the end segment. These results are in good agreement with recent experiments and are robust against various types of disorder, and could help for designing DNA-based spintronic devices.

Kondo Phase Transitions of Magnetic Impurities in Carbon Nanotubes

We propose carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with magnetic impurities as a versatile platform to achieve unconventional Kondo physics, where the CNT bath is gapped by the spin-orbit interaction and surface curvature. While the strong-coupling phase is inaccessible for the special case of half-filled impurities in neutral armchair CNTs, the system in general can undergo quantum phase transitions to the Kondo ground state. The resultant position-specific phase diagrams are investigated upon variation of the CNT radius, chirality, and carrier doping, revealing several striking features, e.g., the existence of a maximal radius for nonarmchair CNTs to realize phase transitions, and an interference-induced suppression of the Kondo screening. We show that by tuning the Fermi energy via electrostatic gating, the quantum critical region can be experimentally accessed.

Transient heat generation in a quantum dot under a step-like pulse bias

We study the transient heat generation in a quantum dot system driven by a step-like or a square-shaped pulse bias. We find that a periodically oscillating heat generation arises after adding the sudden bias. One particularly surprising result is that there exists a heat absorption from the zero-temperature phonon subsystem. Thus the phonon population in non-equilibrium can be less than that of the equilibrium electron-phonon system. In addition, we also ascertain the optimal conditions for the operation of a quantum dot with the minimum heat generation.

The topological system with a twisting edge band: position-dependent Hall resistance

We study a $ν=1$ topological system with one twisting edge-state band and one normal edge-state band. For the twisting edge-state band, Fermi energy goes through the band three times, thus, having three edge states on one side of the sample; while the normal edge band contributes only one edge state on the other side of the sample. In such a system, we show that it consists of both topologically protected and unprotected edge states, and as a consequence, its Hall resistance depends on the location where the Hall measurement is done even for a translationally invariant system. This unique property is absent in a normal topological insulator.

Spin-Selective Transport of Electron in DNA Double Helix

The experiment that the high spin selectivity and the length-dependent spin polarization are observed in double-stranded DNA [Science ${\bf 331}$, 894 (2011)], is elucidated by considering the combination of the spin-orbit coupling, the environment-induced dephasing, and the helical symmetry. We show that the spin polarization in double-stranded DNA is significant even in the case of weak spin-orbit coupling, while no spin polarization appears in single-stranded DNA. Furthermore, the underlying physical mechanism and the parameters-dependence of the spin polarization are studied.

Spin superconductor in ferromagnetic graphene

We show a spin superconductor (SSC) in ferromagnetic graphene as the counterpart to the charge superconductor, in which a spin-polarized electron-hole pair plays the role of the spin $2 (\hbar/2)$ `Cooper pair' with a neutral charge. We present a BCS-type theory for the SSC. With the `London-type equations' of the super-spin-current density, we show the existence of an electric `Meissner effect' against a spatial varying electric field. We further study a SSC/normal conductor/SSC junction and predict a spin-current Josephson effect.

Enhancement of the thermoelectric figure of merit in a quantum dot due to the Coulomb blockade effect

We investigate the figure of merit of a quantum dot (QD) in the Coulomb blockade regime. It is found that the figure of merit $ZT$ may be quite high if only single energy level in the QD is considered. On the other hand, with two or multi energy levels in the QD and without the Coulomb interaction, the $ZT$ is strongly suppressed by the bipolar effect due to small level spacing. However, in the presence of the Coulomb interaction, the effective level spacing is enlarged and the bipolar effect is weakened, resulting in $ZT$ to be considerably high. Thus, it is more likely to find a high efficient thermoelectric QDs with large Coulomb interaction. By using the parameters for a typical QD, the $ZT$ can reach over 5.

The Effect of the Disorder on the Longitudinal Resistance of a Graphene p-n Junction in Quantum Hall Regime

The longitudinal resistances of a six-terminal graphene p-n junction under a perpendicular magnetic field are investigated. Because of the chirality of the Hall edge states, the longitudinal resistances on top and bottom edges of the graphene ribbon are not equal. In the presence of suitable disorder, the top-edge and bottom-edge resistances well show the plateau structures in the both unipolar and bipolar regimes and the plateau values are determined by the Landau filling factors only. These plateau structures are in excellent agreement with the recent experiment. For the unipolar junction, the resistance plateaus emerge in the absence of impurity and they are destroyed by strong disorder. But for the bipolar junction, the resistances are very large without the plateau structures in the clean junction. The disorder can strongly reduce the resistances and leads the formation of the resistance plateaus, due to the mixture of the Hall edge states in virtue of the disorder. In addition, the size effect of the junction on the resistances is studied and some extra resistance plateaus are found in the long graphene junction case. This is explained by the fact that only part of the edge states participate in the full mixing.

Quantum Andreev effect in 2D HgTe/CdTe quantum well-superconductor systems

The Andreev reflection (AR) in 2D HgTe/CdTe quantum well-superconductor hybrid systems is studied. A quantized AR with AR coefficient equal to one is predicted, which is due to the multi-Andreev reflection near the interface of the hybrid system. Importantly, this quantized AR is not only universal, i.e., independent of any system parameters and quality of the coupling of the hybrid system, it is also robust against disorder as well. As a result of this quantum Andreev effect, the conductance exhibits a quantized plateau when the external bias is less the superconductor gap.
