Persistent spin current in nano-devices and definition of the spin current

We investigate two closely related subjects: (i) existence of a pure persistent spin current in semiconducting mesoscopic device with a spin-orbit interaction's (SOI), and (ii) the definition of the spin current in the presence of SOI. Through physical argument from four physical pictures in different aspects, we provide strong evidences that the persistent spin current does exist in a device with SOI in the absence of any magnetic materials. This persistent spin current is an analog of the persistent charge current in a mesoscopic ring threaded by a magnetic flux, and it describes the real spin motion and can be measured experimentally. We then investigate the definition of the spin current. We point out that (i) the non-zero spin current in the equilibrium SOI device is the persistent spin current, (ii) the spin current is in general not conserved, and (iii) the Onsager relation is violated for the spin transport no matter what definition of the spin current is used. These issues, the non-zero spin current in the equilibrium case, the non-conserved spin current, and the violation of the Onsager relation, are intrinsic properties of spin transport. We note that the conventional definition of the spin current has very clear physical intuition and describes the spin motion very well. Therefore we feel that the conventional definition of the spin current makes physical sense and there is no need to modify it. In addition, the relationship between the persistent spin current and transport spin current, the persistent linear and angular spin currents in the SOI region of the hybrid ring, are discussed. Finally, we show that if the spin-spin interaction is included into the Hamiltonian, the persistent spin current is automatically conserved using the conventional definition.

Influence of dephasing process on the quantum Hall effect and the spin Hall effect

We study the influence of the phase relaxation process on Hall resistance and spin Hall current of a mesoscopic two-dimensional (2D) four-terminal Hall cross-bar with or without Rashba spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in a perpendicular uniform magnetic field. We find that the plateaus of the Hall resistance with even number of edge states can survive for very strong phase relaxation when the system size becomes much longer than the phase coherence length. On the other hand, the odd integer Hall resistance plateaus arising from the SOI are easily destroyed by the weak phase relaxation during the competition between the magnetic field and the SOI which delocalize the edge states. In addition, we have also studied the transverse spin Hall current and found that it exhibits resonant behavior whenever the Fermi level crosses the Landau band of the system. The phase relaxation process weakens the resonant spin Hall current and enhances the non-resonant spin Hall current.

Measuring the phonon-assisted spectral function by using a non-quilibrium three-terminal single-molecular device

The electron transport through a three-terminal single-molecular transistor (SMT) is theoretically studied. We find that the differential conductance of the third and weakly coupled terminal versus its voltage matches well with the spectral function versus the energy when certain conditions are met. Particularly, this excellent matching is maintained even for complicated structure of the phonon-assisted side peaks. Thus, this device offers an experimental approach to explore the shape of the phonon-assisted spectral function in detail. In addition we discuss the conditions of a perfect matching. The results show that at low temperatures the matching survives regardless of the bias and the energy levels of the SMT. However, at high temperatures, the matching is destroyed.

Transmission phase shift of phonon-assisted tunneling through a quantum dot

The influence of electron-phonon interaction on the transmission phase shift of an electron passing through a quantum dot is investigated by using the scattering theory. The transmission phase versus the intra-dot level shows a serial of phonon-induced dips. These dips are highly sensitive to electron-phonon interaction strength $λ$, and they are much more pronounced than phonon-assisted sub-peaks appeared in the conductance. Phonon-induce dephasing is also studied, and the results show that the dephasing probability $T_d$ monotonically increases with the electron-phonon interaction strength $λ$. The dephasing probability $T_d \proptoλ^2$ for small $λ$ but $T_d\propto λ$ at large $λ$.

Symmetry and transport property of spin current induced spin-Hall effect

We study the spin current induced spin-Hall effect that a longitudinal spin dependent chemical potential $qV_{s=x,y,z}$ induces a transverse spin conductances $G^{ss'}$. A four terminal system with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction (SOI) in the scattering region is considered. By using Landauer-B$\ddot u$ttiker formula with the aid of the Green function, various spin current induced spin-Hall conductances $G^{ss'}$ are calculated. With the charge chemical potential $qV_c$ or spin chemical potential $qV_{s=x,y,z}$, there are 16 elements for the transverse conductances $G^{μν}_p=J_{p,μ}/V_ν$ where $μ,ν=x,y,z,c$. Due to the symmetry of our system these elements are not independent. For the system with $C_2$ symmetry half of elements are zero, when the center region only exists the Rashba SOI or Dresselhaus SOI. The numerical results show that of all the conductance elements, the spin current induced spin-Hall conductances $G^{ss'}$ are usually much greater (about one or two orders of magnitude) than the spin Hall conductances $G^{sc}$ and the reciprocal spin Hall conductances $G^{cs}$. So the spin current induced spin-Hall effect is dominating in the present device.

Response time of a normal-superconductor hybrid system under the step-like pulse bias

The response of a quantum dot coupled with one normal lead and a superconductor lead driven by a step-like pulse bias $V_L$ is studied using the non-equilibrium Green function method. In the linear pulse bias regime, the responses of the upwards and downwards bias are symmetric. In this regime the turn-on time and turn-off time are much slower than that of the normal system due to the Andreev reflection. On the other hand, for the large pulse bias $V_L$, the instantaneous current exhibits oscillatory behaviors with the frequency $\hbarΩ=qV_L$. The turn on/off times are in (or shorter than) the scale of $1/V_L$, so they are faster for the larger bias $V_L$. In addition, the responses for the upwards and downwards bias are asymmetric at large $V_L$. The turn-on time is larger than the turn-off time but the relaxation time \cite{note1} depends only on the coupling strength $Γ$ and it is much smaller than the turn-on/off times for the large bias $V_L$.

Numerical simulations of a ballistic spin interferometer with the Rashba spin-orbital interaction

We numerically investigate the transport behavior of a quasi one-dimension (1D) square loop device containing the Rashba spin-orbital interaction in the presence of a magnetic flux. The conductance versus the magnetic field shows the Al'tshuler-Aronov-Spivak (AAS) and Aharonov-Bohm (AB) oscillations. We focus on the oscillatory amplitudes, and find that both of them are strongly dependent on the spin precession angle (i.e. the strength of the spin-orbit interaction) and exhibit no-periodic oscillations, which are well in agreement with a recent experiment by Koga et al. [cond-mat/0504743(unpublished)]. However, our numerical results for the ideal 1D square loop device for the node positions of the amplitudes of the AB and AAS oscillations are found to be of some discrepancies comparing with quasi-1D square loop with a finite width. In the presence of disorder and taking the disorder ensemble average, the AB oscillation in the conductance will disappear, while the time-reversal symmetric AAS oscillation still remains. Furthermore, the node positions of the AAS oscillatory amplitude remains the same.

Heat generation by electric current in mesoscopic devices

We study the heat generation in a nano-device with an electric current passing through the device. For the first time, a general formula for the heat generation is derived by using the nonequilibrium Keldysh Green functions. This formula can be applied in both the linear and nonlinear transport regions, for time-dependent systems, and with multi-terminal devices. The formula is also valid when the nano-device contains various interactions. As an application of the formula, the heat generation of a lead-quantum dot-lead system is investigated. The dc and ac biases are studied in detail. We find several interesting behaviors that are unique to nanostructures, revealing significant difference from heat generation in macroscopic systems.

Nature of Spin Hall Effect in a finite Ballistic Two-Dimensional System with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction

The spin Hall effect in a finite ballistic two-dimensional system with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction is studied numerically. We find that the spin Hall conductance is very sensitive to the transverse measuring location, the shape and size of the device, and the strength of the spin-orbit interaction. Not only the amplitude of spin Hall conductance but also its sign can change. This non-universal behavior of the spin Hall effect is essentially different from that of the charge Hall effect, in which the Hall voltage is almost invariant with the transverse measuring site and is a monotonic function of the strength of the magnetic field. These surprise behavior of the spin Hall conductance are attributed to the fact that the eigenstates of the spin Hall system is extended in the transverse direction and do not form the edge states.

Persistent spin current in a spin-orbit coupling/normal hybrid ring

We investigate the equilibrium property of a mesoscopic ring with spin orbit (SO) interaction. It is well known that for a normal mesoscopic ring threaded by a magnetic flux, the electron acquires a Berry phase that induces the persistent (charge) current. Similarly, the spin of electron acquires a spin Berry phase traversing the ring with SO interaction. It is this spin Berry phase that induces a persistent spin current. To demonstrate its existence, we calculate the persistent spin current without accompanying charge current in the normal region in a hybrid mesoscopic ring. We point out that this persistent spin current describes the real spin motion and can be observed experimentally.

Opposite spin accumulations on the transverse edges by the confining potential

We show that the spin-orbit interaction induced by the boundary confining potential causes opposite spin accumulations on the transverse edges in a zonal two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of external longitudinal electric field. While the bias is reversed, the spin polarized direction is also reversed. The intensity of the spin accumulation is proportional to the bias voltage. In contrast to the bulk extrinsic and intrinsic spin Hall effects, the spin accumulation by the confining potential is almost unaffected by impurity and survives even in strong disorder. The result provides a new mechanism to explain the recent experimental data.

Bias-controllable intrinsic spin polarization in a quantum dot

We propose a novel scheme to efficiently polarize and manipulate the electron spin in a quantum dot. This scheme is based on the spin-orbit interaction and it possesses following advantages: (1) The direction and the strength of the spin polarization is well controllable and manipulatable by simply varying the bias or the gate voltage. (2) The spin polarization is quite large even with a weak spin-orbit interaction. (3) Both electron-electron interaction and multi-energy levels do not weaken but strengthen the spin polarization. (4) It has the short spin flip time. (5) The device is free of a magnetic field or a ferromagnetic material. (6) It can be easily realized with present technology.

Persistent spin current in spin-orbit coupling systems in the absence of an external magnetic field

The spin-orbit coupling systems with a zero magnetic field is studied under the equilibrium situation, {\it i.e.}, without a voltage bias. A persistent spin current is predicted to exist under most circumstances, although the persistent charge current and the spin accumulation are identically zero. In particular, a two-dimensional quantum wire is investigated in detail. Surprisingly, a persistent spin current is found to flow along the confined direction, due to the spin precession in accompany with the particle motion. This provides an interesting example of constant spin flowing without inducing a spin accumulation, contrary to common intuition.

The angular spin current and its physical consequences

We find that in order to completely describe the spin transport, apart from spin current (or linear spin current), one has to introduce the angular spin current. The two spin currents respectively describe the translational and rotational motion of a spin. The definitions of these spin current densities are given and their physical properties are discussed. Both spin current densities appear naturally in the spin continuity equation. Moreover we predict that the angular spin current can also induce an electric field $\vec{E}$, and in particular $\vec{E}$ scales as $1/r^2$ at large distance $r$, whereas the $\vec{E}$ field generated from the linear spin current goes as $1/r^3$.

Spontaneous spin-polarized current in a nonuniform Rashba interaction system

We investigate the electron transport through a two-dimensional semiconductor with a nonuniform Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Due to the combination of the coherence effect and the Rashba interaction, a spontaneous spin-polarized current emerges in the absence of any magnetic material and magnetic field. For a two-terminal device, only the local current contains polarization; however, with a four-terminal setup, a polarized total current is produced. This phenomenon may offer a novel way for generating a spin-polarized current, replacing the traditional spin-injection method.

Quantum transport theory for nanostructures with Rashba spin-orbital interaction

We report on a general theory for analyzing quantum transport through devices in the Metal-QD-Metal configuration where QD is a quantum dot or the device scattering region which contains Rashba spin-orbital and electron-electron interactions. The metal leads may or may not be ferromagnetic, they are assumed to weakly couple to the QD region. Our theory is formulated by second quantizing the Rashba spin-orbital interaction in spectral space (instead of real space), and quantum transport is then analyzed within the Keldysh nonequilibrium Green's function formalism. The Rashba interaction causes two main effects to the Hamiltonian: (i) it gives rise to an extra spin-dependent phase factor in the coupling matrix elements between the leads and the QD; (ii) it gives rise to an inter-level spin-flip term but forbids any intra-level spin-flips. Our formalism provides a starting point for analyzing many quantum transport issues where spin-orbital effects are important. As an example, we investigate transport properties of a Aharnov-Bohm ring in which a QD having Rashba spin-orbital and e-e interactions is located in one arm of the ring. A substantial spin-polarized conductance or current emerges in this device due to a combined effect of a magnetic flux and the Rashba interaction. The direction and strength of the spin-polarization are shown to be controllable by both the magnetic flux and a gate voltage.

Reply to the comment on "Do intradot electron-electron interactions induce dephasing?"

In the comment by Konig, Gefen, and Silva, their main point is to question the approximation we used in solving the Green's function. They believe that this approximative method is inappropriate to describe spin-flip-related dephasing processes caused by intradot interaction, so they believe that our conclusions are ill-founded because of that. We agree that we indeed used an approximation in calculating the Green's function. However, we believe our approximation to be reasonable and the main conclusion, namely, an intradot electron-electron interaction can not induce dephasing, should hold. In particular, we emphasize that we have taken the higher-order terms in solving the Green's function than appeared in their previous publications. We will compare the approximation used their papers with that in our work.

Do intradot electron-electron interactions induce dephasing?

We investigate the degree of coherence of electronic transport through a quantum dot (QD) in the presence of an intradot electron-electron interaction. By using an open multi-terminal Aharonov-Bohm (AB) setup, we find that the intradot interaction does not induce any dephasing effect and the electron transport through the QD is fully coherent. We also observe that the asymmetric amplitude of the AB oscillation in the conductance through the two-terminal AB setup originates from the interplay between the confined structure and the electron-electron interaction. Thus, one can not associate a dephasing process with this asymmetric amplitude, as has been done in previous studies.
