Beam-excited resonant modes in RF cavities

Beam-excited resonant modes in RF cavities are important sources of beam-coupling impedance and coupled-bunch instabilities in high-current storage rings. We develop a unified framework for longitudinal and transverse resonant impedances based on Maxwell's equations and generalized cavity-voltage definitions, and derive analytical expressions for impedances obtained from finite-length truncated wakefields. The formulation enables the resonant frequencies, normalized longitudinal and transverse shunt impedances, and, when sufficiently constrained, the quality factors to be extracted from practical wakefield simulations without requiring fully converged long-range wakes. The method is validated with an axisymmetric pillbox cavity through comparison with analytical results and eigenmode calculations. It is then applied to the RF cavity of the Storage-Ring-based Coherent Light Source (SRCLS), where the extracted HOM parameters are used to reconstruct total impedance spectra, evaluate coupled-bunch instability thresholds, and guide cavity-geometry optimization. The results demonstrate an efficient connection between wakefield analysis, eigenmode characterization, and beam-stability evaluation for practical RF-cavity designs.

Lattice design of a storage-ring-based light source for generating high-power fully coherent EUV radiation

We present the physical design and systematic optimization of a high-performance storage ring tailored for the generation of high-power coherent radiation, with particular emphasis on the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) regime. The proposed ring adopts a Double Bend Achromat (DBA) lattice configuration and integrates 12 superconducting wigglers to significantly enhance radiation damping and minimize the natural emittance. And a bypass line is adopted to generate high power coherent radiation. Comprehensive linear and nonlinear beam dynamics analyses have been conducted to ensure beam stability and robustness across the operational parameter space. The optimized design achieves a natural emittance of approximately 0.8 nm and a longitudinal damping time of around 1.4 ms, enabling the efficient buildup of coherent radiation. Three-dimensional numerical simulations, incorporating the previously proposed angular dispersion-induced microbunching (ADM) mechanism, further confirm the system's capability to generate high-power EUV coherent radiation, with output powers reaching the order of several hundred watts. These results underscore the strong potential of the proposed design for applications in coherent photon science and EUV lithography.

A machine-learning based closed orbit feedback for the SSRF storage ring

In order to improve the stability of synchrotron radiation, we developed a new method of machine learning-based closed orbit feedback and piloted it in the storage ring of the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF). In our experiments, not only can the machine learning-based closed orbit feedback carry out horizontal, vertical and RF frequency feedback simultaneously, but it also has better convergence and convergence speed than the traditional Slow Orbit Feed Back (SOFB) system. What's more, the residual values of the correctors' currents variations after correction can be almost ignored. This machine learning-based new method is expected to establish a new closed orbit feedback system and improve the orbit stability of the storage ring in daily operation.

A synchrotron-based kilowatt-level radiation source for EUV lithograph

A compact damping ring with limited circumference of about 160 m is proposed for producing kilowatt-level coherent EUV radiation. The electron bunch in the ring is modulated by a 257nm wavelength laser with the help of the angular dispersion induced micro-bunching method [C. Feng and Z. Zhao, Sci. Rep. 7, 4724 (2017)]. Coherent radiation at 13.5 nm with an average power of about 2.5 kW can be achieved with the state-of-the-art accelerator and laser technologies.

Using a Bessel light beam as an ultra-short period helical undulator

The undulator is a critical component to produce synchrotron radiation and free electron laser. When a Bessel light beam carrying the orbit angular momentum co-propagates with an electron beam, a net transverse deflection force will be subjected to the electron beam. As a result of dephasing effect, the deflection force will oscillate acting as an undulator. For such a laser based undulator, the period length can reach sub-millimeter level, which will greatly reduce the electron energy for the required X-ray production.

Beam dynamics of the superconducting wiggler on the SSRF storage ring

In the SSRF Phase-II beamline project, a Superconducting Wiggler (SW) will be installed in the electron storage ring. It may greatly impact on the beam dynamics due to the very high magnetic field. The emittance growth becomes a main problem, even after a well correction of the beam optics. A local achromatic lattice is studied, in order to combat the emittance growth and keep the good performance of the SSRF storage ring, as well as possible. Other effects of the SW are simulated and optimized as well, including the beta beating, the tune shift, the dynamic aperture, and the field error effects.
