Energy Management and Trajectory Optimization for UAV-Enabled Legitimate Monitoring Systems

Thanks to their quick placement and high flexibility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be very useful in the current and future wireless communication systems. With a growing number of smart devices and infrastructure-free communication networks, it is necessary to legitimately monitor these networks to prevent crimes. In this paper, a novel framework is proposed to exploit the flexibility of the UAV for legitimate monitoring via joint trajectory design and energy management. The system includes a suspicious transmission link with a terrestrial transmitter and a terrestrial receiver, and a UAV to monitor the suspicious link. The UAV can adjust its positions and send jamming signal to the suspicious receiver to ensure successful eavesdropping. Based on this model, we first develop an approach to minimize the overall jamming energy consumption of the UAV. Building on a judicious (re-)formulation, an alternating optimization approach is developed to compute a locally optimal solution in polynomial time. Furthermore, we model and include the propulsion power to minimize the overall energy consumption of the UAV. Leveraging the successive convex approximation method, an effective iterative approach is developed to find a feasible solution fulfilling the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Extensive numerical results are provided to verify the merits of the proposed schemes.

Generalized Wireless-Powered Communications: When to Activate Wireless Power Transfer?

Wireless-powered communication network (WPCN) is a key technology to power energy-limited massive devices, such as on-board wireless sensors in autonomous vehicles, for Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Conventional WPCNs rely only on dedicated downlink wireless power transfer (WPT), which is practically inefficient due to the significant energy loss in wireless signal propagation. Meanwhile, ambient energy harvesting is highly appealing as devices can scavenge energy from various existing energy sources (e.g., solar energy and cellular signals). Unfortunately, the randomness of the availability of these energy sources cannot guarantee stable communication services. Motivated by the above, we consider a generalized WPCN where the devices can not only harvest energy from a dedicated multiple-antenna power station (PS), but can also exploit stored energy stemming from ambient energy harvesting. Since the dedicated WPT consumes system resources, if the stored energy is sufficient, WPT may not be needed to maximize the weighted sum rate (WSR). To analytically characterize this phenomenon, we derive the condition for WPT activation and reveal how it is affected by the different system parameters. Subsequently, we further derive the optimal resource allocation policy for the cases that WPT is activated and deactivated, respectively. In particular, it is found that when WPT is activated, the optimal energy beamforming at the PS does not depend on the devices' stored energy, which is shown to lead to a new unfairness issue. Simulation results verify our theoretical findings and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimal resource allocation.

Robust and Secure Beamforming for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided mmWave MISO Systems

In this letter, we investigate the robust and secure beamforming (RSBF) in an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) aided millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple input single output (MISO) system, where multiple single antenna eavesdroppers (Eves) are arbitrarily distributed nearby the legitimate receiver. Considering the channel state information (CSI) of Eves' channels is imperfectly known at the legitimate transmitter, the RSBF design problems to maximize the worst case of achievable secrecy rate (ASR) are formulated under the total transmission power and unit-modulus constraints. Since the problems are difficult to solve optimally due to their nonconvexity and coupled variables, we substitute the wiretap channels by a weighted combination of discrete samples and propose a RSBF scheme based on alternating optimization and semidefinite relaxation (SDR) techniques, for both colluding and noncolluding eavesdropping scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed RSBF scheme can effectively improve the ASR and also outperforms other benchmark schemes.

A Novel Alternative Optimization Method for Joint Power and Trajectory Design in UAV-Enabled Wireless Network

This letter aims to maximize the average throughput via the joint design of the transmit power and trajectory for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled network. The conventional way to tackle this problem is based on the alternating optimization (AO) method by iteratively updating power and trajectory until convergence, resulting in a non-convex trajectory subproblem which is difficult to deal with. To develop more efficient methods, we propose a novel AO method by incorporating both power and trajectory into an intermediate variable, and then iteratively updating power and the newly introduced variable. This novel variable transformation makes it easier to decompose the original problem into two convex subproblems, namely a throughput maximization subproblem and a feasibility subproblem. Consequently, both of these subproblems can be solved in a globally optimal fashion. We further propose a low-complexity algorithm for the feasibility subproblem by exploiting the alternating directional method of multipliers (ADMM), whose updating step is performed in closed-form solutions. Simulation results demonstrate that our proposed method reduces the computation time by orders of magnitude, while achieving higher performance than the conventional methods.

Joint Power Control and Passive Beamforming in IRS-Assisted Spectrum Sharing

In cognitive radio (CR) communication systems, achieving high secondary user (SU) rate in the presence of strong cross-link interference with the primary user (PU) is challenging. In this letter, we exploit the emerging intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology to tackle this problem. Specifically, we investigate an IRS-assisted CR communication system where an IRS is deployed to assist in the spectrum sharing between a PU link and an SU link. We aim to maximize the achievable SU rate subject to a given signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio target for the PU link, by jointly optimizing the SU transmit power and IRS reflect beamforming. Since the formulated problem is difficult to solve due to its non-convexity and coupled variables, we propose an efficient algorithm based on alternating optimization and successive convex approximation techniques to solve it sub-optimally, along with some heuristic designs for lower complexity. Simulation results show that IRS is able to significantly improve the SU rate, even for the scenarios deemed most challenging in conventional CR systems without using IRS.

Green MU-MIMO/SIMO Switching for Heterogeneous Delay-aware Services with Constellation Optimization

In this paper, we propose adaptive techniques for multi-user multiple input and multiple output~(MU-MIMO) cellular communication systems, to solve the problem of energy efficient communications with heterogeneous delay-aware traffic. In order to minimize the total transmission power of the MU-MIMO, we investigate the relationship between the transmission power and the M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation~(MQAM) constellation size and get the energy efficient modulation for each transmission stream based on the minimum mean square error~(MMSE) receiver.Since the total power consumption is different for MU-MIMO and multi-user single input and multiple output~(MU-SIMO), by exploiting the intrinsic relationship among the total power consumption model, and heterogeneous delay-aware services, we propose an adaptive transmission strategy, which is a switching between MU-MIMO and MU-SIMO. Simulations show that in order to maximize the energy efficiency and consider different Quality of Service (QoS) of delay for the users simultaneously, the users should adaptively choose the constellation size for each stream as well as the transmission mode.

Joint Optimization of User Association, Subchannel Allocation, and Power Allocation in Multi-cell Multi-association OFDMA Heterogeneous Networks

Heterogeneous network is a novel network architecture proposed in Long-Term-Evolution~(LTE), which highly increases the capacity and coverage compared with the conventional networks. However, in order to provide the best services, appropriate resource management must be applied. In this paper, we consider the joint optimization problem of user association, subchannel allocation, and power allocation for downlink transmission in Multi-cell Multi-association Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) heterogeneous networks. To solve the optimization problem, we first divide it into two subproblems: 1) user association and subchannel allocation for fixed power allocation; 2) power allocation for fixed user association and subchannel allocation. Subsequently, we obtain a locally optimal solution for the joint optimization problem by solving these two subproblems alternately. For the first subproblem, we derive the globally optimal solution based on graph theory. For the second subproblem, we obtain a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) optimal solution by a low complexity algorithm based on the difference of two convex functions approximation (DCA) method. In addition, the multi-antenna receiver case and the proportional fairness case are also discussed. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms can significantly enhance the overall network throughput.

Energy-Efficient Buffer-Aided Relaying Systems with Opportunistic Spectrum Access

In this paper, an energy-efficient cross-layer design framework is proposed for cooperative relaying networks, which takes into account the influence of spectrum utilization probability. Specifically, random arrival traffic is considered and an adaptive modulation and coding (AMC) scheme is adopted in the cooperative transmission system to improve the system performance. The average packet dropping rate of the relay-buffer is studied at first. With the packet dropping rate and stationary distribution of the system state, the closed-form expression of the delay is derived. Then the energy efficiency for relay-assisted transmission is investigated, which takes into account the queueing process of the relay and the source. In this context, an energy efficiency optimization problem is formulated to determine the optimum strategy of power and time allocation for the relay-assisted cooperative system. Finally, the energy efficient switching strategy between the relay assisted transmission and the direct transmission is obtained, where packet transmissions have different delay requirements. In addition, energy efficient transmission policy with AMC is obtained. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design improving the energy efficiency.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface: Practical Phase Shift Model and Beamforming Optimization

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) that enables the control of wireless propagation environment has recently emerged as a promising cost-effective technology for boosting the spectrum and energy efficiency in future wireless communication systems. Prior works on IRS are mainly based on the ideal phase shift model assuming the full signal reflection by each of the elements regardless of its phase shift, which, however, is practically difficult to realize. In contrast, we propose in this paper the practical phase shift model that captures the phase-dependent amplitude variation in the element-wise reflection coefficient. Based on the proposed model and considering an IRS-aided multiuser system with an IRS deployed to assist in the downlink communications from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna users, we formulate an optimization problem to minimize the total transmit power at the AP by jointly designing the AP transmit beamforming and the IRS reflect beamforming, subject to the users' individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints. Iterative algorithms are proposed to find suboptimal solutions to this problem efficiently by utilizing the alternating optimization (AO) or penalty-based optimization technique. Moreover, we analyze the asymptotic performance loss of the IRS-aided system that employs practical phase shifters but assumes the ideal phase shift model for beamforming optimization, as the number of IRS elements goes to infinity. Simulation results unveil substantial performance gains achieved by the proposed beamforming optimization based on the practical phase shift model as compared to the conventional ideal model.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface-Assisted Multiple Access with User Pairing: NOMA or OMA?

The integration of intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) to multiple access networks is a cost-effective solution for boosting spectrum/energy efficiency and enlarging network coverage/connections. However, due to the new capability of IRS in reconfiguring the wireless propagation channels, it is fundamentally unknown which multiple access scheme is superior in the IRS-assisted wireless network. In this letter, we pursue a theoretical performance comparison between non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and orthogonal multiple access (OMA) in the IRS-assisted downlink communication, for which the transmit power minimization problems are formulated under the discrete unit-modulus reflection constraint on each IRS element. We analyze the minimum transmit powers required by different multiple access schemes and compare them numerically, which turn out to not fully comply with the stereotyped superiority of NOMA over OMA in conventional systems without IRS. Moreover, to avoid the exponential complexity of the brute-force search for the optimal discrete IRS phase shifts, we propose a low-complexity solution to achieve near-optimal performance.

Beamforming Optimization for Wireless Network Aided by Intelligent Reflecting Surface with Discrete Phase Shifts

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a cost-effective solution for achieving high spectrum and energy efficiency in future wireless networks by leveraging massive low-cost passive elements that are able to reflect the signals with adjustable phase shifts. Prior works on IRS mainly consider continuous phase shifts at reflecting elements, which are practically difficult to implement due to the hardware limitation. In contrast, we study in this paper an IRS-aided wireless network, where an IRS with only a finite number of phase shifts at each element is deployed to assist in the communication from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna users. We aim to minimize the transmit power at the AP by jointly optimizing the continuous transmit precoding at the AP and the discrete reflect phase shifts at the IRS, subject to a given set of minimum signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at the user receivers. The considered problem is shown to be a mixed-integer non-linear program (MINLP) and thus is difficult to solve in general. To tackle this problem, we first study the single-user case with one user assisted by the IRS and propose both optimal and suboptimal algorithms for solving it. Besides, we analytically show that as compared to the ideal case with continuous phase shifts, the IRS with discrete phase shifts achieves the same squared power gain in terms of asymptotically large number of reflecting elements, while a constant proportional power loss is incurred that depends only on the number of phase-shift levels. The proposed designs for the single-user case are also extended to the general setup with multiple users among which some are aided by the IRS. Simulation results verify our performance analysis as well as the effectiveness of our proposed designs as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Weighted Sum Power Maximization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided SWIPT

The low efficiency of far-field wireless power transfer (WPT) limits the fundamental rate-energy (R-E) performance trade-off of the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. To address this challenge, we propose in this letter a new SWIPT system aided by the emerging intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) technology. By leveraging massive low-cost passive elements that are able to reflect the signals with adjustable phase shifts, IRS achieve a high passive beamforming gain, which is appealing for drastically enhancing the WPT efficiency and thereby the R-E trade-off of SWIPT systems. We consider an IRS being deployed to assist a multi-antenna access point (AP) to serve multiple information decoding receivers (IDRs) and energy harvesting receivers (EHRs). We aim to maximize the weighted sum-power received by EHRs via jointly optimizing the transmit precoders at the AP and reflect phase shifts at the IRS, subject to the individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints for IDRs. Since this problem is non-convex, we propose efficient algorithms to obtain suboptimal solutions for it. In particular, we prove that it is sufficient to send information signals only at the AP to serve both IDRs and EHRs regardless of their channel realizations. Moreover, simulation results show significant performance gains achieved by our proposed designs over benchmark schemes.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted Secrecy Communication: Is Artificial Noise Helpful or Not?

In this letter, we investigate whether the use of artificial noise (AN) is helpful to enhance the secrecy rate of an intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) assisted wireless communication system. Specifically, an IRS is deployed nearby a single-antenna receiver to assist in the transmission from a multi-antenna transmitter, in the presence of multiple single-antenna eavesdroppers. Aiming to maximize the achievable secrecy rate, a design problem for jointly optimizing transmit beamforming with AN or jamming and IRS reflect beamforming is formulated, which is however difficult to solve due to its non-convexity and coupled variables. We thus propose an efficient algorithm based on alternating optimization to solve the problem sub-optimally. Simulation results show that incorporating AN in transmit beamforming is beneficial under the new setup with IRS reflect beamforming. In particular, it is unveiled that the IRS-aided design without AN even performs worse than the AN-aided design without IRS as the number of eavesdroppers near the IRS increases.

Throughput Maximization for UAV-aided Backscatter Communication Networks

This paper investigates unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided backscatter communication (BackCom) networks, where the UAV is leveraged to help the backscatter device (BD) forward signals to the receiver. Based on the presence or absence of a direct link between BD and receiver, two protocols, namely transmit-backscatter (TB) protocol and transmit-backscatter-relay (TBR) protocol, are proposed to utilize the UAV to assist the BD. In particular, we formulate the system throughput maximization problems for the two protocols by jointly optimizing the time allocation, reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory. Different static/dynamic circuit power consumption models for the two protocols are analyzed. The resulting optimization problems are shown to be non-convex, which are challenging to solve. We first consider the dynamic circuit power consumption model, and decompose the original problems into three sub-problems, namely time allocation optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and reflection coefficient, reflection coefficient optimization with fixed UAV trajectory and time allocation, and UAV trajectory optimization with fixed reflection coefficient and time allocation. Then, an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed for both protocols by leveraging the block coordinate descent method and successive convex approximation (SCA) techniques. In addition, for the static circuit power consumption model, we obtain the optimal time allocation with a given reflection coefficient and UAV trajectory and the optimal reflection coefficient with low computational complexity by using the Lagrangian dual method. Simulation results show that the proposed protocols are able to achieve significant throughput gains over the compared benchmarks.

Energy-Efficient Cooperative Secure Transmission in Multi-UAV Enabled Wireless Networks

This paper investigates a multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) enabled cooperative secure transmission scheme in the presence of multiple potential eavesdroppers. Specifically, multiple source UAVs (SUAVs) send confidential information to multiple legitimate ground users and in the meantime multiple jamming UAVs (JUAVs) cooperatively transmit interference signals to multiple eavesdroppers in order to improve the legitimate users' achievable secrecy rate. By taking into account the limited energy budget of UAV, our goal is to maximize the system secrecy energy efficiency (SEE), namely the achievable secrecy rate per energy consumption unit, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, transmit power and user scheduling under the constraints of UAV mobility as well as the maximum transmit power. The resulting optimization problem is shown to be a non-convex and mixed-integer fractional optimization problem, which is challenging to solve. We decompose the original problem into three sub-problems, and then an efficient iterative algorithm is proposed by leveraging the block coordinate descent and Dinkelbach method in combination with successive convex approximation techniques. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the other benchmarks significantly in terms of the system SEE.

Joint Active and Passive Beamforming Optimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Assisted SWIPT under QoS Constraints

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is a new and revolutionizing technology for achieving spectrum and energy efficient wireless networks. By leveraging massive low-cost passive elements that are able to reflect radio-frequency (RF) signals with adjustable phase shifts, IRS can achieve high passive beamforming gains, which are particularly appealing for improving the efficiency of RF-based wireless power transfer. Motivated by the above, we study in the paper an IRS-assisted simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) system. Specifically, a set of IRSs are deployed to assist in the information/power transfer from a multi-antenna access point (AP) to multiple single-antenna information users (IUs) and energy users (EUs), respectively. We aim to minimize the transmit power at the AP via jointly optimizing its transmit precoders and the reflect phase shifts at all IRSs, subject to the quality-of-service (QoS) constraints at all users, namely, the individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) constraints at IUs and energy harvesting constraints at EUs. However, this optimization problem is non-convex with intricately coupled variables, for which the existing alternating optimization approach is shown to be inefficient as the number of QoS constraints increases. To tackle this challenge, we first apply proper transformations on the QoS constraints and then propose an efficient iterative algorithm by applying the penalty-based method. Moreover, by exploiting the short-range coverage of IRSs, we further propose a low-complexity algorithm by optimizing the phase shifts of all IRSs in parallel.

Towards Smart and Reconfigurable Environment: Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided Wireless Network

Although the fifth-generation (5G) technologies will significantly improve the spectrum and energy efficiency of today's wireless communication networks, their high complexity and hardware cost as well as increasingly more energy consumption are still crucial issues to be solved. Furthermore, despite that such technologies are generally capable of adapting to the space and time varying wireless environment, the signal propagation over it is essentially random and largely uncontrollable. Recently, intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has been proposed as a revolutionizing solution to address this open issue, by smartly reconfiguring the wireless propagation environment with the use of massive low-cost, passive, reflective elements integrated on a planar surface. Specifically, different elements of an IRS can independently reflect the incident signal by controlling its amplitude and/or phase and thereby collaboratively achieve fine-grained three-dimensional (3D) passive beamforming for signal enhancement or cancellation. In this article, we provide an overview of the IRS technology, including its main applications in wireless communication, competitive advantages over existing technologies, hardware architecture as well as the corresponding new signal model. We focus on the key challenges in designing and implementing the new IRS-aided hybrid (with both active and passive components) wireless network, as compared to the traditional network comprising active components only. Furthermore, numerical results are provided to show the potential for significant performance enhancement with the use of IRS in typical wireless network scenarios.

Cellular-Connected UAV: Uplink Association, Power Control and Interference Coordination

The line-of-sight (LoS) air-to-ground channel brings both opportunities and challenges in cellular-connected unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communications. On one hand, the LoS channels make more cellular base stations (BSs) visible to a UAV as compared to the ground users, which leads to a higher macro-diversity gain for UAV-BS communications. On the other hand, they also render the UAV to impose/suffer more severe uplink/downlink interference to/from the BSs, thus requiring more sophisticated inter-cell interference coordination (ICIC) techniques with more BSs involved. In this paper, we consider the uplink transmission from a UAV to cellular BSs, under spectrum sharing with the existing ground users. To investigate the optimal ICIC design and air-ground performance trade-off, we maximize the weighted sum-rate of the UAV and existing ground users by jointly optimizing the UAV's uplink cell associations and power allocations over multiple resource blocks. However, this problem is non-convex and difficult to be solved optimally. We first propose a centralized ICIC design to obtain a locally optimal solution based on the successive convex approximation (SCA) method. As the centralized ICIC requires global information of the network and substantial information exchange among an excessively large number of BSs, we further propose a decentralized ICIC scheme of significantly lower complexity and signaling overhead for implementation, by dividing the cellular BSs into small-size clusters and exploiting the LoS macro-diversity for exchanging information between the UAV and cluster-head BSs only. Numerical results show that the proposed centralized and decentralized ICIC schemes both achieve a near-optimal performance, and draw important design insights based on practical system setups.
