Gaps in Multiplicative Sidon Sets

For a positive integer $n$, let $g(n)$ denote the infimum of all real numbers $L$ such that there exists a multiplicative Sidon set $A\subseteq\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ that intersects every interval $[x,x+L]\subseteq[1,n]$. Sárközy asked for estimates on $g(n)$, and he in particular asked whether one has $g(n)\le\sqrt n$ for every $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We first show that this estimate does indeed hold, with a proof that was autonomously discovered and formally verified in Lean by Aristotle. Next, we improve the upper bound further and, with $ρ= \frac{13-\sqrt{69}}{10} < 0.47$, prove that $g(n)\ll_{\varepsilon} n^{ρ+\varepsilon}$ for every $\varepsilon > 0$.

Primitive sets and von Mangoldt chains: Erdős Problem #1196 and beyond

A set of integers is primitive if no number in the set divides another. We introduce a new method for bounding Erdős sums of primitive sets, suggested from output of GPT-5.4 Pro, based on Markov chains with von Mangoldt weights. The method leads to a host of applications, yet seems to have been overlooked by the prior literature since Erdős's seminal 1935 paper. As applications, we prove two 1966 conjectures of Erdős-Sárközy-Szemerédi, on primitive sets of large numbers (#1196) and on divisibility chains (#1217). The method also provides a short proof of the Erdős Primitive Set Conjecture (#164), as well as the related claim that 2 is an ''Erdős-strong'' prime. Moreover, the method resolves a revised form of the Banks-Martin conjecture, which has long been viewed as a unifying `master theorem' for the area.

Global Product Intersection Sets in Semigroups

For a family $(A_q)_{q\in Q}$ of subsets of a semigroup, the product intersection set records those exponents $h \in \mathbb{N}$ for which the $h$-fold product set of the intersection, $(\bigcap_q A_q)^h$, is equal to $\bigcap_q A_q^h$, the intersection of the product sets. Nathanson recently asked which subsets of $\mathbb{N}$ can occur as a product intersection set, both for arbitrary and for decreasing families $(A_q)_{q\in Q}$. We solve both problems by giving a complete classification. In particular, when $|Q| \ge 2$, we show that in either case any subset $X \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ with $1 \in X$ occurs as a product intersection set. Both classifications were autonomously discovered and formally verified in Lean by Aristotle, a formal reasoning agent developed by Harmonic.

On Spielman's Laplacian Eigenratio Conjecture and Related Problems

Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph with Laplacian eigenvalues $0=λ_1(G)\le λ_2(G)\le\cdots\le λ_n(G)$. Motivated by the Alon-Boppana bound and the Ramanujan phenomenon for regular graphs, Spielman conjectured that, for every graph $G$ with fixed average degree $d\ge 1$, its Laplacian eigenratio satisfies $$ \frac{λ_2(G)}{λ_n(G)} \le \frac{d-2\sqrt{d-1}}{d+2\sqrt{d-1}}+o_n(1), $$ where $o_n(1)\to 0$ as $n\to\infty$. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate this conjecture. We show that the situation is mixed. On the negative side, the conjecture fails for infinitely many average degrees $d>2$, via constructions based on bipartite Ramanujan graphs. On the positive side, it holds in two important settings: we verify it for all average degrees $d\le 2$, and we prove it for all regular graphs. In fact, for regular graphs we obtain stronger bounds comparing higher Laplacian eigenvalues. As a consequence, we show that for every fixed $d\ge 3$ and every $\varepsilon>0$, every sufficiently large $d$-regular Ramanujan graph has linearly many adjacency eigenvalues below $-2\sqrt{d-1}+\varepsilon$, thereby strengthening earlier results of Li and Cioabă by giving an unconditional result of this form. We also settle two related conjectures: one of You and Liu concerning the maximum Laplacian eigenratio of trees, and one of Gu concerning the Hamiltonicity of graphs with large Laplacian eigenratio.

A counterexample to a conjecture of Sárközy on sums and products modulo a prime

Let $p$ be a prime and, for $A\subseteq \mathbb F_p$, define $A^\ast=(A+A)\cup(AA)$. Sárközy conjectured that there exist constants $c>0$ and $p_0$ such that, for every prime $p>p_0$, every set $A\subseteq \mathbb F_p$ with $|A|>\left(\frac12-c\right)p$ satisfies $\mathbb F_p^\times\subseteq A^\ast$. We disprove this conjecture: for every odd prime $p\ge 5$, there exists a set $A\subseteq \mathbb F_p$ with $|A|=\frac{p-1}{2}$ such that $1\notin A^\ast$. Thus no positive constant $c$ can satisfy Sárközy's conjecture. Conversely, if $|A|>\frac{p}{2}$, then $A+A=\mathbb F_p$. Therefore the sharp threshold is exactly $\frac12$.

Optimal bounds for an Erdős problem on matching integers to distinct multiples

Let $f(m)$ be the largest integer such that for every set $A = \{a_1 < \cdots < a_m\}$ of $m$ positive integers and every open interval $I$ of length $2a_m$, there exist at least $f(m)$ disjoint pairs $(a, b)$ with $a \in A$ dividing $b \in I$. Solving a problem of Erdős, we determine $f(m)$ exactly, and show $$ f(m)=\min\bigl(m,\lceil 2\sqrt{m}\,\rceil\bigr) $$ for all $m$. The proof was obtained through an AI-assisted workflow: the proof strategy was first proposed by ChatGPT, and the detailed argument was subsequently made fully rigorous and formally verified in Lean by Aristotle. The exposition and final proofs presented here are entirely human-written. [This paper solves Problem #650 on Bloom's website "Erdős problems".]

The Hofstadter consecutive-sum sequence omits infinitely many positive integers

Let $(a_n)_{n\ge 1}$ be the greedy self-generating sequence defined by $a_1=1$, $a_2=2$, and, for $k\ge 3$, by taking $a_k$ to be the least integer greater than $a_{k-1}$ that can be written as a sum of at least two consecutive earlier terms. Hofstadter asked about the asymptotic behavior of this sequence. In this paper we prove that $$ n+Ω(\log\log n)\le a_n \ll n^{4175/2506+o(1)}. $$ In particular, $(a_n)_{n\ge1}$ omits infinitely many positive integers, thereby settling a conjecture from the OEIS entry A005243.

A sharp upper bound on the third adjacency eigenvalue of a graph

For a graph $G$ of order $n$, let $$ λ_1(G)\ge \cdots \ge λ_n(G) $$ be the eigenvalues of its adjacency matrix. We prove that every graph $G$ on $n\ge 3$ vertices satisfies $$ λ_3(G)\le \frac{n}{3}-1, $$ thereby solving a problem of Nikiforov. The bound is best possible whenever $3\mid n$. Our proof is derived from a more general matrix result: if $A=(a_{ij})$ is a real symmetric matrix of order $n$ with $0\le a_{ij}\le 1$ for all off-diagonal entries and $a_{ii}\ge 0$ for all $i$, then $$ λ_{n-1}(A)+λ_n(A)\ge -\frac{2n}{3}. $$ This in particular confirms a conjecture of Leonida and Li.

An Erdős--Trotter problem on antichains with multiplicity $r$ on each occurring level

Fix an integer $r\ge2$. For each $n$ we consider families $\mathcal F\subseteq 2^{[n]}$ that form an antichain and have the property that, for every $t$, if there exists $A\in\mathcal F$ with $|A|=t$ then there exist at least $r$ members of $\mathcal F$ of size $t$. A problem of Erdős and Trotter asserts that, for each fixed $r$, there exists a threshold $n_0(r)$ such that whenever $n>n_0(r)$ one can achieve $n-3$ distinct set sizes in such a family, and asks for estimates on $n_0(r)$. We compute that $n_0(2)=3$ and $n_0(3)=8$. For all $r\ge4$ we prove matching linear bounds up to lower-order terms, namely $$ 2r+2 \le n_0(r) \le 2r+2\log_2 r + O(\log_2\log_2 r). $$ In particular, $n_0(r) = 2r + o(r)$.

A Solution to a Problem of Rubel on Two-Parameter Normal Families of Entire Functions

We construct an entire function $ F(z,a,b)\in \mathcal{O}(\mathbb{C}^3) $ such that the family $$ \{F(\,\cdot\,,a,b):a,b\in\mathbb{C}\} $$ of entire functions of \(z\) is normal on \(\mathbb{C}\), while \(F\) does not factor through a single entire parameter. This solves a problem of L.~A.~Rubel concerning Liouville-type rigidity. In fact, our example satisfies the stronger condition $$ F_bF_{a,z}-F_aF_{b,z}\neq 0 \qquad\text{on }\mathbb{C}^3. $$ The geometric core of the construction is a Fatou--Bieberbach domain contained in the thin region $$ \{(u,v)\in\mathbb{C}^2:|u-v^2|<1+|v|\}. $$ We obtain this domain from the basin of attraction of an explicit polynomial automorphism of \(\mathbb{C}^2\), together with the theorem of Rosay and Rudin on attracting basins.

An Erdős problem on random subset sums in finite abelian groups

Let $f(N)$ denote the least integer $k$ such that, if $G$ is an abelian group of order $N$ and $A \subseteq G$ is a uniformly random $k$-element subset, then with probability at least $\tfrac12$ the subset-sum set $\{ \sum_{x \in S} x : S \subseteq A \}$ equals $G$. In 1965, Erdős and Rényi proved that for all $N$, $$ f(N) \le \log_2 N + \left(\frac{1}{\log 2}+o(1)\right)\log\log N. $$ Erdős later conjectured that this bound cannot be improved to $f(N)\le \log_2 N+o(\log\log N)$. In this paper we confirm this conjecture by showing that, for primes $p$, $$ f(p)\ge \log_2 p+\left(\frac{1}{2\log 2}+o(1)\right)\log\log p. $$

On Fuchs's additive intersection problem for the hyperbolic metric

For hyperbolic domains $D_1,D_2\subset \{z\in\mathbb C:|z|<R\}$ and $z\in D_1\cap D_2$, we consider the ratio $$ \frac{λ_{D_1\cap D_2}(z)} {λ_{D_1}(z)+λ_{D_2}(z)}. $$ We solve a problem of W. H. J. Fuchs by proving that the supremum of this ratio is $+\infty$ when $D_1$ and $D_2$ range over all hyperbolic domains. If $D_1$ and $D_2$ are further assumed to be simply connected, then the supremum is $1$. We also show that the infimum of this ratio is $\frac12$ in both settings, and that the value $\frac12$ is attained if and only if $D_1=D_2$.

On the maximum product of distances of diameter $2$ point sets

We consider a problem posed by Erdős, Herzog and Piranian on the maximum product of distances of a point set of order $n$ with a given diameter. We prove that it is sufficient to consider convex polygons and obtain results on the structure of the diameter graph. We also give constructions that drastically improve on the regular $n$-gons, sketching what the extremal polygons should look like, while presenting results indicating that one cannot hope to characterize the extremal polygons in general for even orders.

Largest Sidon subsets in weak Sidon sets

A finite set $ S \subset \mathbb{R} $ is called a Sidon set if all sums $ x+y $ with $ x,y \in S $ and $ x \le y $ are distinct, and a weak Sidon set if all sums $ x+y $ with $ x,y \in S $ and $ x < y $ are distinct. For a finite set $ A \subset \mathbb{R} $, let $ h(A) $ denote the maximum size of a Sidon subset of $ A $, and define $$ g(n) := \min\{\, h(A) : A \subset \mathbb{R},\ |A| = n,\ A \text{ is a weak Sidon set} \,\}. $$ Sárközy and Sós asked whether the limit $ \lim_{n\to\infty} g(n)/n $ exists and, if so, to determine its value. We resolve this problem completely by determining $g(n)$ exactly: $$ g(n)=\left\lceil \frac{n+1}{2}\right\rceil \qquad\text{for all } n\ge 1. $$ In particular, $\lim_{n\to\infty} g(n)/n=\frac12$. We also investigate a related problem of Erdős concerning a local difference condition. A finite set $ A \subset \mathbb{R} $ is called a $(4,5)$-set if every $4$-element subset of $A$ determines at least five distinct values among its six pairwise absolute differences. Erdős asked for the optimal constant $ c_* > 0 $ such that every $(4,5)$-set of size $ n $ contains a Sidon subset of size at least $ c_* n $. Gyárfás and Lehel reduced this to an extremal problem of $3$-uniform hypergraphs and proved $\frac{1}{2} + \frac{1}{141 \cdot 76} \le c_* \le \frac{3}{5}$. We improve both bounds by establishing $$ \frac{9}{17} \le c_* \le \frac{4}{7}, $$ where the lower bound uses a reformulation of the extremal problem, and the upper bound follows from an explicit construction together with a convenient characterization of $c_*$.

Generalizing the Clunie--Hayman construction in an Erdős maximum-term problem

Let $f(z)=\sum_{n\ge0}a_n z^n$ be a transcendental entire function and write $M(r,f):=\max_{|z|=r}|f(z)|$ and $μ(r,f):=\max_{n\ge0}|a_n|\,r^n$. A problem of Erdős asks for the value of $$ B:=\sup_f \liminf_{r\to\infty}\frac{μ(r,f)}{M(r,f)}. $$ In 1964, Clunie and Hayman proved that $\frac{4}{7} 0.58507, $$ improving the classical constant $\frac{4}{7}$.

Harmonic LCM patterns and sunflower-free capacity

Fix an integer $k\ge 3$. Call a set $A\subseteq [N]$ LCM-$k$-free if it does not contain distinct $a_1,\dots,a_k$ such that $\mathrm{lcm}(a_i,a_j)$ is the same for all $1\le i<j\le k$. Define $$ f_k(N):=\max\left\{\sum_{a\in A}\frac1a: A\subseteq [N] \text{ is LCM-$k$-free}\right\}. $$ Addressing a problem of Erdős, we prove an explicit unconditional lower bound $$ f_k(N)\ge (\log N)^{c_k-o(1)}, \qquad c_k:=\frac{k-2}{e((k-2)!)^{1/(k-2)}}. $$ Let $F_k(n)$ denote the maximum size of a $k$-sunflower-free family of subsets of $[n]$, and define the Erdős--Szemerédi $k$-sunflower-free capacity by $μ_k^{\mathrm S}:=\limsup_{n\to\infty}F_k(n)^{1/n}$. Motivated by a remark of Erdős relating this problem to the sunflower conjecture, we show that $$ (\log N)^{\logμ_k^{\mathrm S}-o(1)} \le f_k(N) \ll (\log N)^{μ_k^{\mathrm S}-1+o(1)}. $$ Furthermore, we show that the Erdős--Szemerédi sunflower conjecture fails for this fixed $k$ (i.e. $μ_k^{\mathrm S}=2$) if and only if $f_k(N)=(\log N)^{1-o(1)}$.
