Local and global $Λ$ polarization in a vortical fluid

We compute the fermion spin distribution in the vortical fluid created in off-central high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We employ the event-by-event (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model. The spin polarization density is proportional to the local fluid vorticity in quantum kinetic theory. As a result of strong collectivity, the spatial distribution of the local vorticity on the freeze-out hyper-surface strongly correlates to the rapidity and azimuthal angle distribution of fermion spins. We investigate the sensitivity of the local polarization to the initial fluid velocity in the hydrodynamic model and compute the global polarization of Λ hyperons by the AMPT model. The energy dependence of the global polarization agrees with the STAR data.

Covariant chiral kinetic equation in Wigner function approach

The covariant chiral kinetic equation (CCKE) is derived from the 4-dimensional Wigner function by an improved perturbative method under the static equilibrium conditions. The chiral kinetic equation in 3-dimensions can be obtained by intergation over the time component of the 4-momentum. There is freedom to add more terms to the CCKE allowed by conservation laws. In the derivation of the 3-dimensional equation, there is also freedom to choose coefficients of some terms in $dx_{0}/dτ$ and $d\mathbf{x}/dτ$ ($τ$ is a parameter along the worldline, and $(x_{0},\mathbf{x})$ denotes the time-space position of a particle) whose 3-mometum integrals are vanishing. So the 3-dimensional chiral kinetic equation derived from the CCKE is not uniquely determined in the current approach. To go beyond the current approach, one needs a new way of building up the 3-dimensional chiral kinetic equation from the CCKE or directly from covariant Wigner equations.

Approach to Chandrasekhar-Kendall-Woltjer State in a Chiral Plasma

We study the time evolution of the magnetic field in a plasma with a chiral magnetic current. The Vector Spherical Harmonic functions (VSH) are used to expand all fields. We define a measure for the Chandrasekhar-Kendall-Woltjer (CKW) state, which has a simple form in VSH expansion. We propose the conditions for a general class of initial momentum spectra that will evolve into the CKW state. For this class of initial conditions, to approach the CKW state, (i) a non-vanishing chiral magnetic conductivity is necessary, and (ii) the time integration of the product of the electric resistivity and chiral magnetic conductivity must grow faster than the time integration of the resistivity. We give a few examples to test these conditions numerically which work very well.

Pseudoscalar condensation induced by chiral anomaly and vorticity for massive fermions

We derive the pseudoscalar condensate induced by anomaly and vorticity from the Wigner function for massive fermions in homogeneous electromagnetic fields. It has an anomaly term and a force-vorticity coupling term. As a mass effect, the pseudoscalar condensate is linearly proportional to the fermion mass in small mass expansion. By a generalization to two-flavor and three-flavor cases, the neutral pion and eta meson condensates are calculated from the Wigner function and have anomaly parts as well as force-vorticity parts, in which the anomaly part of the neutral pion condensate is consistent to the previous result. We also discuss about possible observables of the condensates in heavy ion collisions such as collective flows of neutral pions and eta mesons which may be influenced by the electromagnetic field and vorticity profiles.

New Classes of Positive Semi-Definite Hankel Tensors

A Hankel tensor is called a strong Hankel tensor if the Hankel matrix generated by its generating vector is positive semi-definite. It is known that an even order strong Hankel tensor is a sum-of-squares tensor, and thus a positive semi-definite tensor. The SOS decomposition of strong Hankel tensors has been well-studied by Ding, Qi and Wei \cite{DQW1}. On the other hand, very little is known for positive semi-definite Hankel tensors which are not strong Hankel tensors. In this paper, we study some classes of positive semi-definite Hankel tensors which are not strong Hankel tensors. These include truncated Hankel tensors and quasi-truncated Hankel tensors. Then we show that a strong Hankel tensor generated by an absoluate integrable function is always completely decomposable, and give a class of SOS Hankel tensors which are not completely decomposable.

Polarization of massive fermions in a vortical fluid

Fermions become polarized in a vorticular fluid due to spin-vorticity coupling. Such a polarization can be calculated from the Wigner function in a quantum kinetic approach. Extending previous results for chiral fermions, we derive the Wigner function for massive fermions up to the next-to-leading order in spatial gradient expansion. The polarization density of fermions can be calculated from the axial vector component of the Wigner function and is found to be proportional to the local vorticity $ω$. The polarizations per particle for fermions and anti-fermions decrease with the chemical potential and increase with energy (mass). Both quantities approach the asymptotic value $\hbarω/4$ in the large energy (mass) limit. The polarization per particle for fermions is always smaller than that for anti-fermions, whose ratio of fermions to anti-fermions also decreases with the chemical potential. The polarization per particle on the Cooper-Frye freeze-out hyper-surface can also be formulated and is consistent with the previous result of Becattini et al..

Vortical fluid and $Λ$ spin correlations in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Fermions become polarized in a vortical fluid due to spin-vorticity coupling. The spin polarization density is proportional to the local fluid vorticity at the next-to-leading order of a gradient expansion in a quantum kinetic theory. Spin correlations of two $Λ$-hyperons can therefore reveal the vortical structure of the dense matter in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We employ a (3+1)D viscous hydrodynamic model with event-by-event fluctuating initial conditions from A MultiPhase Transport (AMPT) model to calculate the vorticity distributions and $Λ$ spin correlations. The azimuthal correlation of the transverse spin is shown to have a cosine form plus an offset due to a circular structure of the transverse vorticity around the beam direction and global spin polarization. The longitudinal spin correlation shows a structure of vortex-pairing in the transverse plane due to the convective flow of hot spots in the radial direction. The dependence on colliding energy, rapidity, centrality and sensitivity to the shear viscosity are also investigated.

Electromagnetic fields with electric and chiral magnetic conductivities in heavy ion collisions

We derive analytic formula for electric and magnetic fields produced by a moving charged particle in a conducting medium with the electric conductivity $σ$ and the chiral magnetic conductivity $σ_χ$. We use the Green function method and assume that $σ_χ$ is much smaller than $σ$. The compact algebraic expressions for electric and magnetic fields without any integrals are obtained. They recover the Lienard-Wiechert formula at vanishing conductivities. Exact numerical solutions are also found for any values of $σ$ and $σ_χ$ and are compared to analytic results. Both numerical and analytic results agree very well for the scale of high energy heavy ion collisions. The space-time profiles of electromagnetic fields in non-central Au+Au collisions have been calculated based on these analytic formula as well as exact numerical solutions.

Physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at very high energy

Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon and dilepton production. We illustrate the potential of future experimental studies of the initial particle production and formation of QGP at the highest temperature to provide constraints on properties of strongly interaction matter.

Magnetic moment, vorticity-spin coupling and parity-odd conductivity of chiral fermions in 4-dimensional Wigner functions

We demonstrate the emergence of the magnetic moment and spin-vorticity coupling of chiral fermions in 4-dimensional Wigner functions. In linear response theory with space-time varying electromagnetic fields, the parity-odd part of the electric conductivity can also be derived which reproduces results of the one-loop and the hard-thermal or hard-dense loop. All these properties show that the 4-dimensional Wigner functions capture comprehensive aspects of physics for chiral fermions in electromagnetic fields.

From holography towards real-world nuclear matter

Quantum chromodynamics is notoriously difficult to solve at nonzero baryon density, and most models or effective theories of dense quark or nuclear matter are restricted to a particular density regime and/or a particular form of matter. Here we study dense (and mostly cold) matter within the holographic Sakai-Sugimoto model, aiming at a strong-coupling framework in the wide density range between nuclear saturation density and ultra-high quark matter densities. The model contains only three parameters, and we ask whether it fulfills two basic requirements of real-world cold and dense matter, a first-order onset of nuclear matter and a chiral phase transition at high density to quark matter. Such a model would be extremely useful for astrophysical applications because it would provide a single equation of state for all densities relevant in a compact star. Our calculations are based on two approximations for baryonic matter, firstly an instanton gas and secondly a homogeneous ansatz for the non-abelian gauge fields on the flavor branes of the model. While the instanton gas shows chiral restoration at high densities but an unrealistic second-order baryon onset, the homogeneous ansatz behaves exactly the other way around. Our study thus provides all ingredients that are necessary for a more realistic model and allows for systematic improvements of the applied approximations.

Computing Eigenvalues of Large Scale Hankel Tensors

Large scale tensors, including large scale Hankel tensors, have many applications in science and engineering. In this paper, we propose an inexact curvilinear search optimization method to compute Z- and H-eigenvalues of $m$th order $n$ dimensional Hankel tensors, where $n$ is large. Owing to the fast Fourier transform, the computational cost of each iteration of the new method is about $\mathcal{O}(mn\log(mn))$. Using the Cayley transform, we obtain an effective curvilinear search scheme. Then, we show that every limiting point of iterates generated by the new algorithm is an eigen-pair of Hankel tensors. Without the assumption of a second-order sufficient condition, we analyze the linear convergence rate of iterate sequence by the Kurdyka-Łojasiewicz property. Finally, numerical experiments for Hankel tensors, whose dimension may up to one million, are reported to show the efficiency of the proposed curvilinear search method.

Three Dimensional Strongly Symmetric Circulant Tensors

In this paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for an even order three dimensional strongly symmetric circulant tensor to be positive semi-definite. In some cases, we show that this condition is also sufficient for this tensor to be sum-of-squares. Numerical tests indicate that this is also true in the other cases.

Positive Semi-Definiteness and Sum-of-Squares Property of Fourth Order Four Dimensional Hankel Tensors

A positive semi-definite (PSD) tensor which is not a sum-of-squares (SOS) tensor is called a PSD non-SOS (PNS) tensor. Is there a fourth order four dimensional PNS Hankel tensor? Until now, this question is still an open problem. Its answer has both theoretical and practical meanings. We assume that the generating vector $v$ of the Hankel tensor $A$ is symmetric. Under this assumption, we may fix the fifth element $v_4$ of $v$ at $1$. We show that there are two surfaces $M_0$ and $N_0$ with the elements $v_2, v_6, v_1, v_3, v_5$ of $v$ as variables, such that $M_0 \ge N_0$, $A$ is SOS if and only if $v_0 \ge M_0$, and $A$ is PSD if and only if $v_0 \ge N_0$, where $v_0$ is the first element of $v$. If $M_0 = N_0$ for a point $P = (v_2, v_6, v_1, v_3, v_5)^\top$, then there are no fourth order four dimensional PNS Hankel tensors with symmetric generating vectors for such $v_2, v_6, v_1, v_3, v_5$. Then, we call such a point $P$ PNS-free. We show that a $45$-degree planar closed convex cone, a segment, a ray and an additional point are PNS-free. Numerical tests check various grid points, and find that they are also PNS-free.

Positive Semi-Definiteness of Generalized Anti-Circulant Tensors

Anti-circulant tensors have applications in exponential data fitting. They are special Hankel tensors. In this paper, we extend the definition of anti-circulant tensors to generalized anti-circulant tensors by introducing a circulant index $r$ such that the entries of the generating vector of a Hankel tensor are circulant with module $r$. In the special case when $r =n$, where $n$ is the dimension of the Hankel tensor, the generalized anticirculant tensor reduces to the anti-circulant tensor. Hence, generalized anti-circulant tensors are still special Hankel tensors. For the cases that $GCD(m, r) =1$, $GCD(m, r) = 2$ and some other cases, including the matrix case that $m=2$, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for positive semi-definiteness of even order generalized anti-circulant tensors, and show that in these cases, they are SOS tensors. This shows that, in these cases, there are no PNS (positive semidefinite tensors which are not sum of squares) Hankel tensors.

Elliptic flow of thermal dileptons in event-by-event hydrodynamic simulation

The elliptic flows of thermal di-electrons are investigated within a (2+1)-dimension event-by-event hydrodynamic model for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. The fluctuating initial conditions are given by the Monte Carlo Glauber model. We find in our event-by-event calculation rather weak correlation between the dilepton emission angles and the event plane angles of charged hadrons. We observe strong fluctuation effects in dilepton elliptic flows when using the event plane angles of dileptons at specific invariant mass $M$. The correlation between the dilepton event plane angle and charged hadron one becomes stronger with decreasing $M$. This provides a possible measure of the interplay between the effect of geometric deformation and that of fluctuating "hot spots" in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Charm quarks in medium and their contribution to di-electron spectra in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We study the dynamics of charm quarks in the partonic medium and its implication to the di-electron spectra in high energy heavy ion collisions. The charm quarks traversing a thermal medium is simulated by the relativistic Langevin equation for elastic scatterings of charm quarks by thermal partons in an expanding fireball. The transport coefficients of charm quarks are calculated by the in-medium T-matrix method, where a static heavy quark potential is used with parameters fitted by the lattice QCD results. The di-electron invariant mass spectra are computed in most central collisions and are compared to the STAR data. The angular correlations of di-electrons are almost the same in $p+p$ and Au+Au collisions in the mass range $1.1<M<2.5~\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ with the back-to-back feature. This means that the angular correlation is intact even with medium interaction at the RHIC energy.
