Kinetic equations for massive Dirac fermions in electromagnetic field with non-Abelian Berry phase

We derive a semi-classical effective action and the kinetic equation for massive Dirac fermions in electromagnetic fields. The non-Abelian Berry phase structure emerges from two helicity states of massive fermions with positive energy. The classical spin emerges as a vector in SU(2) helicity space. The continuity equations for the fermion number and the classical spin are derived. The fermion number is conserved while the spin charge is not conserved by anomaly. Previous results about the coefficients of the chiral magnetic effect for the fermion and axial currents in the chiral limit can be reproduced after including the anti-fermion contributions. This provides an example for the emerging spin and non-Abelian Berry phase of Dirac fermions arising from the fermion mass.

Relics of Minijets amid Anisotropic Flows in High-energy Heavy-ion Collisions

Two dimensional low-$p_T$ dihadron correlations in azimuthal angle $ϕ$ and pseudo-rapidity $η$ in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are investigated within both the HIJING Monte Carlo model and an event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic model. Without final-state interaction and collective expansion, dihadron correlations from HIJING simulations have a typical structure from minijets that contains a near-side two-dimensional peak and an away-side ridge along the $η$-direction. In contrast, event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic simulations with fluctuating initial conditions from the HIJING+AMPT model produce a strong dihadron correlation that has an away-side as well as a near-side ridge. Relics of intrinsic dihadron correlation from minijets in the initial conditions still remain as superimposed on the two ridges. By varying initial conditions from HIJING+AMPT, we study effects of minijets, non-vanishing initial flow and longitudinal fluctuation on the final state dihadron correlations. With a large rapidity gap, one can exclude near-side correlations from minijet relics and dihadron correlations can be described by the superposition of harmonic flows up to the 6th order. When long-range correlations with a large rapidity gap are subtracted from short-range correlations with a small rapidity gap, the remaining near-side dihadron correlations result solely from relics of minijets. Low transverse momentum hadron yields per trigger ($p_T^{\rm trig} <4$ GeV/$c$, $p_T^{\rm asso}<2$ GeV/$c$) in central heavy-ion collisions are significantly enhanced over that in p+p collisions while widths in azimuthal angle remain the same, in qualitative agreement with experimental data.

Regular Uniform Hypergraphs, $s$-Cycles, $s$-Paths and Their largest Laplacian H-Eigenvalues

In this paper, we show that the largest signless Laplacian H-eigenvalue of a connected $k$-uniform hypergraph $G$, where $k \ge 3$, reaches its upper bound $2Δ(G)$, where $Δ(G)$ is the largest degree of $G$, if and only if $G$ is regular. Thus the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of $G$, reaches the same upper bound, if and only if $G$ is regular and odd-bipartite. We show that an $s$-cycle $G$, as a $k$-uniform hypergraph, where $1 \le s \le k-1$, is regular if and only if there is a positive integer $q$ such that $k=q(k-s)$. We show that an even-uniform $s$-path and an even-uniform non-regular $s$-cycle are always odd-bipartite. We prove that a regular $s$-cycle $G$ with $k=q(k-s)$ is odd-bipartite if and only if $m$ is a multiple of $2^{t_0}$, where $m$ is the number of edges in $G$, and $q = 2^{t_0}(2l_0+1)$ for some integers $t_0$ and $l_0$. We identify the value of the largest signless Laplacian H-eigenvalue of an $s$-cycle $G$ in all possible cases. When $G$ is odd-bipartite, this is also its largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue. We introduce supervertices for hypergraphs, and show the components of a Laplacian H-eigenvector of an odd-uniform hypergraph are equal if such components corresponds vertices in the same supervertex, and the corresponding Laplacian H-eigenvalue is not equal to the degree of the supervertex. Using this property, we show that the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of an odd-uniform generalized loose $s$-cycle $G$ is equal to $Δ(G)=2$. We also show that the largest Laplacian H-eigenvalue of a $k$-uniform tight $s$-cycle $G$ is not less than $Δ(G)+1$, if the number of vertices is even and $k=4l+3$ for some nonnegative integer $l$.

Negative Off-Diagonal Conductivities in a Weakly Coupled Quark Gluon Plasma

We calculate the conductivity matrix of a weakly coupled quark-gluon plasma at the leading-log order. By setting all quark chemical potentials to be identical, the diagonal conductivities become degenerate and positive, while the off-diagonal ones become degenerate but negative (or zero when the chemical potential vanishes). This means a potential gradient of a certain fermion flavor can drive backward currents of other flavors. A simple explanation is provided for this seemingly counter intuitive phenomenon. It is speculated that this phenomenon is generic and most easily measured in cold atom experiments.

Berry curvature and 4-dimensional monopole in relativistic chiral kinetic equation

We derive a relativistic chiral kinetic equation with manifest Lorentz covariance from Wigner functions of spin-1/2 massless fermions in a constant background electromagnetic field. It contains vorticity terms and a 4-dimensional Euclidean Berry monopole which gives axial anomaly. By integrating out the zero-th component of the 4-momentum p, we reproduce the previous 3-dimensional results derived from the Hamiltonian approach, together with the newly derived vorticity terms. The phase space continuity equation has an anomalous source term proportional to the product of electric and magnetic fields ($F\tilde{F} \sim E.B$). This provides a unified interpretation of the chiral magnetic and vortical effects, chiral anomaly, Berry curvature, and the Berry monopole in the framework of Wigner functions.

Parity violating quantum kinetic theory in (2+1)-dimensions

We study the kinetic theory for a (2+1)-dimensional fermionic system with special emphasis on the parity violating properties associated with the fermion mass. The Wigner function approach is used to derive hydrodynamical transport coefficients to the first spatial derivative order. As a first attempt, the collisions between fermions are neglected. The resulting system is dissipationless. The parity violating Hall electric conductivity has the same temperature and chemical potential dependence as the quantum field theory result at one-loop. Vorticity dependent transport properties, which were not considered before, also emerge naturally in this approach.

Shear and Bulk Viscosities of a Gluon Plasma in Perturbative QCD: Comparison of Different Treatments for the gg<->ggg Process

The leading order contribution to the shear and bulk viscosities, ηand ζ, of a gluon plasma in perturbative QCD includes the gg -> gg (22) process, gg <-> ggg (23) process and multiple scattering processes known as the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. Complete leading order computations for ηand ζwere obtained by Arnold, Moore and Yaffe (AMY) and Arnold, Dogan and Moore (ADM), respectively, with the inelastic processes computed by an effective g <-> gg gluon splitting. We study how complementary calculations with 22 and 23 processes and a simple treatment to model the LPM effect compare with the results of AMY and ADM. We find that our results agree with theirs within errors. By studying the contribution of the 23 process to η, we find that the minimum angle θamong the final state gluons in the fluid local rest frame has a distribution that is peaked at θ\sim \sqrt{α_{s}}, analogous to the near collinear splitting asserted by AMY and ADM. However, the average of θis much bigger than its peak value, as its distribution is skewed with a long tail. The same θbehavior is also seen if the 23 matrix element is taken to the soft gluon bremsstrahlung limit in the center-of-mass (CM) frame. This suggests that the soft gluon bremsstrahlung in the CM frame still has some near collinear behavior in the fluid local rest frame. We also generalize our result to a general SU(N_c) pure gauge theory and summarize the current viscosity computations in QCD.

Collision Rate and Symmetry Factor in Gluon Plasma

The elastic and inelastic collision rates in a gluon gas are calculated. The symmetry factor and the phase space integral are discussed in detail. With a symmetry factor and well constrained phase space, the same result can be obtained as that of the full phase space without the factor. Such an equivalence is illustrated by analytic and numerical calculations for $gg \rightarrow gg$ and $gg\rightarrow ggg$ processes.

Shear and Bulk Viscosities of a Weakly Coupled Quark Gluon Plasma with Finite Chemical Potential and Temperature---Leading-Log Results

We calculate the shear (eta) and bulk (zeta) viscosities of a weakly coupled quark gluon plasma at the leading-log order with finite temperature T and quark chemical potential mu. We find that the shear viscosity to entropy density ratio eta/s increases monotonically with mu and eventually scales as (mu/T)^2 at large mu. In contrary, zeta/s is insensitive to mu. Both eta/s and zeta/s are monotonically decreasing functions of the quark flavor number N_f when N_f \geq 2. This property is also observed in pion gas systems. Our perturbative calculation suggests that QCD becomes the most perfect (i.e. with the smallest eta/s) at mu=0 and N_f = 16 (the maximum N_f with asymptotic freedom). It would be interesting to test whether the currently smallest eta/s computed close to the phase transition with mu=0 and N_f = 0 can be further reduced by increasing N_f.

Effect of longitudinal fluctuation in event-by-event (3+1)D hydrodynamics

Hadron spectra and elliptic flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are studied in event-by-event (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic simulations with fluctuating initial conditions given by the AMPT Monte Carlo model. Both the coherent soft gluon production from wounded nucleons and incoherent mini-jet production in semi-hard parton scatterings are considered. These partons take part in parton cascade and are assumed to be locally thermalized. They provide the fluctuating initial conditions for hydrodynamic simulations with a Gaussian smearing. Effects of both transverse and longitudinal fluctuations are studied. The initial fluctuations along rapidity direction lead to expanding hot spots in longitudinal direction, which will reduce elliptic flow and the yield of particles at high transverse momentum. The intrinsic correlation introduced in the fluctuating initial conditions is also found to influence the di-hadron correlation of the final hadrons.

Chiral anomaly and local polarization effect from quantum kinetic approach

A power expansion scheme is set up to determine the Wigner function that satisfies the quantum kinetic equation for spin-1/2 charged fermions in a background electromagnetic field. Vector and axial-vector current induced by magnetic field and vorticity are obtained simultaneously from the Wigner function. The chiral magnetic and vortical effect and chiral anomaly are shown as natural consequences of the quantum kinetic equation. The axial-vector current induced by vorticity is argued to lead to a local polarization effect along the vorticity direction in heavy-ion collisions.

Effects of initial flow velocity fluctuation in event-by-event (3+1)D hydrodynamics

Hadron spectra and elliptic flow in high-energy heavy-ion collisions are studied within a (3+1)D ideal hydrodynamic model with fluctuating initial conditions given by the AMPT Monte Carlo model. Results from event-by-event simulations are compared with experimental data at both RHIC and LHC energies. Fluctuations in the initial energy density come from not only the number of coherent soft interactions of overlapping nucleons but also incoherent semi-hard parton scatterings in each binary nucleon collision. Mini-jets from semi-hard parton scatterings are assumed to be locally thermalized through a Gaussian smearing and give rise to non-vanishing initial local flow velocities. Fluctuations in the initial flow velocities lead to harder transverse momentum spectra of final hadrons due to non-vanishing initial radial flow velocities. Initial fluctuations in rapidity distributions lead to expanding hot spots in the longitudinal direction and are shown to cause a sizable reduction of final hadron elliptic flow at large transverse momenta.

Di-electron production from vector mesons with medium modifications in heavy ion collisions

We reproduce the di-electron spectra in the low and intermediate mass regions in most central Au+Au collisions by the STAR Collaboration incorporation of the STAR detector acceptance. We also compare our results with PHENIX data constrained by the PHENIX acceptance. We include the medium modifications of vector mesons from scatterings of vector mesons by mesons and baryons in the thermal medium. The freezeout contributions from vector mesons are also taken into account. The space-time evolution is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamic model. The backgrounds from semi-leptonic decays of charm hadrons are simulated by the PYTHIA event generator and corrected by the nuclear modification factor of electrons from charm decays. It is difficult to extract the thermal contributions from those from charm decays in the invariant mass spectra alone and in the current detector acceptances. Other observables such as transverse momenta and collective flows may provide additional tools to tag these sources.

Refractive Index of Light in the Quark-Gluon Plasma with the Hard-Thermal-Loop Perturbation Theory

The electric permittivity and magnetic permeability for the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is calculated within the hard-thermal-loop (HTL) perturbation theory. The refractive indices in the magnetizable and non-magnetizable plasmas are calculated. In a magnetizable plasma, there is a frequency pole $ω_{mp}$ in the magnetic permeability and the refractive index. The refractive index becomes negative in the range $ω\in[k,ω_{mp}]$, where $k$ is the wave number, but no propagating modes are found. In a non-magnetizable plasma, the magnetic permeability and the refractive index are always positive. This marks the main distinction of a weakly coupled plasma from a strongly coupled one, where the negative refraction is shown to exist in a holographic theory.

Some recent progress on quark pairings in dense quark and nuclear matter

We give a brief overview on some recent progress in quark pairings in dense quark/nuclear matter mostly developed in the past five years. We focus on following aspects in particular: the BCS-BEC crossover in the CSC phase, the baryon formation and dissociation in dense quark/nuclear matter, the Ginzburg-Landau theory for three-flavor dense matter with $U_{A}$(1) anomaly, and the collective and Nambu-Goldstone modes for the spin-one CSC.

Baryon formation and dissociation in dense hadronic and quark matter

We study the formation of baryons as composed of quarks and diquarks in hot and dense hadronic matter in a Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL)--type model. We first solve the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the diquark propagator and then use this to solve the Dyson-Schwinger equation for the baryon propagator. We find that stable baryon resonances exist only in the phase of broken chiral symmetry. In the chirally symmetric phase, we do not find a pole in the baryon propagator. In the color-superconducting phase, there is a pole, but is has a large decay width. The diquark does not need to be stable in order to form a stable baryon, a feature typical for so-called Borromean states. Varying the strength of the diquark coupling constant, we also find similarities to the properties of an Efimov states.

Magnetic Tuning of the Relativistic BCS-BEC Crossover

The effect of an applied magnetic field in the crossover from Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing regimes is investigated. We use a model of relativistic fermions and bosons inspired by those previously used in the context of cold fermionic atoms and in the magnetic-color-flavor-locking phase of color superconductivity. It turns out that as with cold atom systems, an applied magnetic field can also tune the BCS-BEC crossover in the relativistic case. We find that no matter what the initial state is at B=0, for large enough magnetic fields the system always settles into a pure BCS regime. In contrast to the atomic case, the magnetic field tuning of the crossover in the relativistic system is not connected to a Feshbach resonance, but to the relative numbers of Landau levels with either BEC or BCS type of dispersion relations that are occupied at each magnetic field strength.

Dilepton flow and deconfinement phase transition in heavy ion collisions

The dilepton radial flow in Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}=200 GeV is investigated. The space-time evolution of the fireball is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamics with a variety of equations of state. The slope parameters of the transverse momentum spectra from the partonic and hadronic phases show distinct features and are sensitive to equation of state parameters. The elliptic flow and breaking of M_T scaling are also studied and have distinct features for the two phases. These features can serve as clean signals for the formation of a quark-gluon plasma in ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions.
