High-throughput fabrication and semi-automated characterization of oxide thin film transistors

High throughput experimental methods are known to accelerate the rate of research, development, and deployment of electronic materials. For example, thin films with lateral gradients in composition, thickness, or other parameters have been used alongside spatially-resolved characterization to assess how various physical factors affect material properties under varying measurement conditions. Similarly, multi-layer electronic devices that contain such graded thin films as one or more of their layers can also be characterized spatially in order to optimize the performance. In this work, we apply these high throughput experimental methods to thin film transistors (TFTs), demonstrating combinatorial device fabrication and semi-automated characterization using sputtered Indium-Gallium-Zinc-Oxide (IGZO) TFTs as a case study. We show that both extrinsic and intrinsic types of device gradients can be generated in a TFT library, such as channel thickness and length, channel cation compositions, and oxygen atmosphere during deposition. We also present a semi-automated method to measure the 44 devices fabricated on a 50x50mm substrate that can help to identify properly functioning TFTs in the library and finish the measurement in a short time. Finally, we propose a fully automated characterization system for similar TFT libraries, which can be coupled with high throughput data analysis. These results demonstrate that high throughput methods can accelerate the investigation of TFTs and other electronic devices.

EV Charging Optimization based on Day-ahead Pricing Incorporating Consumer Behavior

With the increasing penetration of electric vehicles (EVs) into the automotive market, the electricity peak demand would increase significantly due to home-EV-charging. This paper tackles this problem by defining an 'ideal' EV consumption profile, from which a day-ahead pricing model is derived. Based on historical residential EV-use data ranging over a year, we demonstrate that the proposed optimization process results in a pricing profile that achieves a dual objective of minimizing the total electricity cost, as well as the peak aggregate system demand. Importantly, the proposed formulation is simple, and accounts for the tradeoff between consumer convenience in terms of the number of available charging slots during a day and the reduction in the total electricity cost. This technique is demonstrated to be scalable with respect to the size of the community whose EV charging demands are being optimized.

Transfer Representation Learning with TSK Fuzzy System

Transfer learning can address the learning tasks of unlabeled data in the target domain by leveraging plenty of labeled data from a different but related source domain. A core issue in transfer learning is to learn a shared feature space in where the distributions of the data from two domains are matched. This learning process can be named as transfer representation learning (TRL). The feature transformation methods are crucial to ensure the success of TRL. The most commonly used feature transformation method in TRL is kernel-based nonlinear mapping to the high-dimensional space followed by linear dimensionality reduction. But the kernel functions are lack of interpretability and are difficult to be selected. To this end, the TSK fuzzy system (TSK-FS) is combined with transfer learning and a more intuitive and interpretable modeling method, called transfer representation learning with TSK-FS (TRL-TSK-FS) is proposed in this paper. Specifically, TRL-TSK-FS realizes TRL from two aspects. On one hand, the data in the source and target domains are transformed into the fuzzy feature space in which the distribution distance of the data between two domains is min-imized. On the other hand, discriminant information and geo-metric properties of the data are preserved by linear discriminant analysis and principal component analysis. In addition, another advantage arises with the proposed method, that is, the nonlinear transformation is realized by constructing fuzzy mapping with the antecedent part of the TSK-FS instead of kernel functions which are difficult to be selected. Extensive experiments are conducted on the text and image datasets. The results obviously show the superiority of the proposed method.

Correlated Eigenvalues Optical Communications

There is a fundamental limit on the capacity of fibre optical communication system (Shannon Limit). This limit can be potentially overcome via using Nonlinear Frequency Division Multiplexing. Dealing with noises in these systems is one of the most critical parts in implementing a practical system. In this paper, we discover and characterize the correlations among the NFT channels. It is demonstrated that the correlation is universal (i.e., independent of types of system noises) and can be exploited to maximize transmission throughput. We propose and experimentally confirm a noise model showing that end-to-end noise can be modeled as the accumulation of noise associated with each segment of optical communication which can be dealt with independently. Also, each point noise can be further decomposed into different components, some of which are more significant (and even dominating) than others. Hence, one can further approximate and simplify the noise model by focusing on the significant component.

Noise Models in the Nonlinear Spectral Domain for Optical Fibre Communications

Existing works on building a soliton transmission system only encode information using the imaginary part of the eigenvalue, which fails to make full use of the signal degree-of-freedoms. Motivated by this observation, we make the first step of encoding information using (discrete) spectral amplitudes by proposing analytical noise models for the spectral amplitudes of $N$-solitons ($N\geq 1$). To our best knowledge, this is the first work in building an analytical noise model for spectral amplitudes, which leads to many interesting information theoretic questions, such as channel capacity analysis, and has a potential of increasing the transmission rate. The noise statistics of the spectral amplitude of a soliton are also obtained without the Gaussian approximation.

Performance Evaluation and Optimization of Math-Similarity Search

Similarity search in math is to find mathematical expressions that are similar to a user's query. We conceptualized the similarity factors between mathematical expressions, and proposed an approach to math similarity search (MSS) by defining metrics based on those similarity factors [11]. Our preliminary implementation indicated the advantage of MSS compared to non-similarity based search. In order to more effectively and efficiently search similar math expressions, MSS is further optimized. This paper focuses on performance evaluation and optimization of MSS. Our results show that the proposed optimization process significantly improved the performance of MSS with respect to both relevance ranking and recall.

Study of noise impact on nonlinear frequency division multiplexing

In this work, how the noise contaminates signals propagating in an optical fibre is discussed in the nonlinear spectral domain after applying the nonlinear Fourier transform. Simulation results about how the soliton parameters in the nonlinear spectral domain perturb is shown.

Gravitating tensor monopole in a Lorentz-violating field theory

We present a solution of the coupled Einstein and rank-two antisymmetric tensor field equations where Lorentz symmetry is spontaneously broken, and we discuss its observational signatures. Especially, the deflection angles have important qualitative differences between tensor and scalar monopoles. If a monopole were to be detected, it would be discriminated whether or not to correspond to a tensor one. This phenomenon might open up new direction in the search of Lorentz violation with future astrophysical observations.

Laser-launched evanescent surface plasmon polariton field utilized as a direct coherent pumping source to generate emitted nonlinear four-wave mixing radiation

We develop a concept of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) based four-wave mixing (4WM), in which a laser-launched evanescent SPP field is utilized as a coherent pumping source to involve directly in a nonlinear 4WM process at the dielectric/metal interface. Conversion efficiency of the resulting 4WM radiation is expected to be dramatically increased due to the local-field enhancement effect. Feasibility of implementing this concept at the air/gold film and graphene flake/gold film interfaces is further examined by numerical simulations. The concept shows intriguing promise for applications in newly emerging nanophotonics, optoelectronics, and active plasmonics.

Reaction of C_2(a^3Pi_u) with methanol: Temperature dependence and deuterium isotope effect

We present a first temperature dependence and kinetic isotope effect study on the reaction of C_2(a^3Pi_u) with methanol. The bimolecular rate constants for a series of methanol isotopomers have been measured as a function of temperature between 293 and 673 K. The observed positive temperature dependences as well as deuterium kinetic isotope effects permit determination of the reaction mechanism as a site-specific hydrogen abstraction from the methyl site rather than from the hydroxyl site.

Spectroscopy of nickel monosulfide in 450 - 560 nm by laser-induced fluorescence and dispersed fluorescence techniques

Laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectrum of NiS in the wavelength range of 450 - 560 nm has been recorded and analyzed. Thirty-five vibronic transition bands have been observed, 29 of which are reported for the first time. Rotational analyses indicated that all the observed bands can be attributable to the [Omega = 0] - X^3 Sigma^- transitions of ^58 NiS (and ^60 NiS). Twenty-five bands have been suggested to be grouped into four vibrational progressions. Furthermore, through dispersed fluorescence measurements we directly obtained the energies for the ground-state vibrational levels up to v" = 6 as well as the vibrational frequency and the anharmonicity constant for the ground state of ^58 NiS.

The B-X and C-X band systems of CuCl revisited: A laser-induced fluorescence study in 465-490 nm

We have reinvestigated the B-X and C-X band systems of CuCl by recording the laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra in 20400-21800 cm^{-1}. The rotational analyses in Hund's case (a) revealed unambiguously a singlet-to-singlet transition nature. The measured lifetimes of a few microseconds seem too long for singlets and too short for triplets, which we think is actually in favor of a picture of singlet ({1}^Pi and {1}^Sigma^{+})-triplet ({3}^Pi_{0,1,2}) mixed states in the B and C band systems of CuCl. The two excited states we observed in our spectra may be the singlets that have been strongly "contaminated" by their triplet neighbors.

Reactions of C$_2$({\it a}$^3Pi_u$) with selected saturated alkanes: A temperature dependence study

We present a temperature dependence study on the gas phase reactions of the C$_2$({\it a}$^3Pi_u$) radical with a selected series of saturated alkanes (C$_2$H$_6$, C$_3$H$_8$, n-C$_4$H$_10$, i-C$_4$H$_10$, and n-C$_6$H$_14$) by means of pulsed laser photolysis/laser-induced fluorescence technique. The bimolecular rate constants for these reactions were obtained between 298 and 673 K. A pronounced negative temperature effect was observed for n-C$_4$H$_10$, i-C$_4$H$_10$, and n-C$_6$H$_14$ and interpreted in terms of steric hindrance of the more reactive secondary or tertiary C-H bonds by less reactive CH$_3$ groups. Detailed analysis of our experimental results reveals quantitatively the temperature dependence of reactivities for the primary, secondary, and tertiary C-H bonds in these saturated alkanes and further lends support to a mechanism of hydrogen abstraction.

Photolysis of n-butyl nitrite and isoamyl nitrite at 355 nm: A time-resolved Fourier transform infrared emission spectroscopy and ab initio study

We report on the photodissociation dynamics study of n-butyl nitrite (n-C_4H_9ONO) and isoamyl nitrite ((CH_3)_2C_3H_5ONO) by means of time-resolved Fourier transform infrared (TR-FTIR) emission spectroscopy. The obtained TR-FTIR emission spectra of the nascent NO fragments produced in the 355-nm laser photolysis of the two alkyl nitrite species showed an almost identical rotational temperature and vibrational distributions of NO. In addition, a close resemblance between the two species was also found in the measured temporal profiles of the IR emission of NO and the recorded UV absorption spectra. The experimental results are consistent with our ab initio calculations using the time-dependent density functional theory at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level, which indicate that the substitution of one of the two {gamma}-H atoms in n-C_4H_9ONO with a methyl group to form (CH_3)_2C_3H_5ONO has only a minor effect on the photodissociation dynamics of the two molecules.

Phase locking of two independent degenerate coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering processes

We propose an elegant scheme towards phase locking of two independent degenerate coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) processes. The optical implementation involves a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer that is utilized to transfer phase coherence from three totally uncorrelated laser beams into two degenerate CARS beams which are independently produced in two distinct Raman active samples. Such a phase-transport interferometer allows for explicit measurement and control of phase differences between the two phase-locked degenerate CARS processes, hence may lead to applications in other pertinent research fields.

Division of the two-qubit Hilbert space according to the entanglement sudden death under composite noise environment

We show theoretically that according to the disentanglement behavior under composite noise environment, the Hilbert space of a two-qubit system can be divided into two separate parts: a 3-dimensional subspace in which all states disentangle asymptotically, and the rest in which all states disentangle abruptly. The violation of additivity for entanglement decay rates under weak noises [see, PRL 97, 140403 (2006)] therefore can be explained in terms of such division of the Hilbert space.

On the photofragmentation of SF$_2^+$: Experimental evidence for a predissociation channel

We report on the first observation of the photofragmentation dynamics of SF$_2^+$. With the aid of state-of-the-art ab initio calculations on the low-lying excited cationic states of SF$_2^+$ performed by Lee et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 125, 104304 (2006)], a predissociation channel of SF$_2^+$ is evidenced by means of resonance-enhanced multilphoton ionization spectroscopy. This work represents a second experimental investigation on the low-lying excited cationic states of SF$_2^+$. [The first one is the He I photoelectron spectrum of SF$_2^+$ reported by de Leeuw et al. three decades ago, see Chem. Phys. 34, 287 (1978).]
