Optical absorption spectra from the $GW$-Bethe-Salpeter framework for thousands of atoms

The frequency-dependent absorption and emission of light determine the colors of matter and underpin today's technologies, from solar cells to light-emitting diodes. Predicting optical properties from first principles remains a computational challenge, especially for large and disordered systems. The $GW$ plus Bethe-Salpeter equation ($GW$-BSE) approach provides predictive accuracy for optical properties, but conventional implementations become costly as system size grows. Here, we present a $GW$-BSE framework combining real-time propagation, atom-centered basis sets, and a locally optimized real-space resolution of the identity. The cost of each propagation step scales quadratically with system size and roughly equals the cost of one self-consistent-field iteration in a density-functional calculation with a semilocal functional. This computational efficiency allows us to calculate the absorption spectrum of a nanographene containing 4616 atoms and opens a path toward routine calculations of optical properties for large disordered systems.

Gaussian basis sets for all-electron excited-state calculations of large molecules

We introduce a family of all-electron Gaussian basis sets, augmented MOLOPT, optimized for excited-state calculations on large molecules. We generate these basis sets by augmenting existing STO-3G, STO-6G, and MOLOPT basis sets optimized for ground state energy calculations. The augmented MOLOPT basis sets achieve fast convergence of $GW$ gaps and Bethe-Salpeter excitation energies, while maintaining low condition numbers of the overlap matrix to ensure numerical stability. For $GW$ HOMO-LUMO gaps, the double-zeta augmented MOLOPT basis yields a mean absolute deviation of 60 meV to the complete basis set limit. The basis set convergence for excitation energies from time-dependent density functional theory and the Bethe-Salpeter equation is similar. We use our smallest generated augmented MOLOPT basis (aug-SZV-MOLOPT-ae-mini) to demonstrate $GW$ calculations on nanographenes with 9224 atoms requiring only 34300 core hours of computational resources.

Efficient $GW$ band structure calculations using Gaussian basis functions and application to atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides

We present a $GW$ space-time algorithm for periodic systems in a Gaussian basis including spin-orbit coupling. We employ lattice summation to compute the irreducible density response and the self-energy, while we employ $k$-point sampling for computing the screened Coulomb interaction. Our algorithm enables accurate and computationally efficient quasiparticle band structure calculations for atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenides. For monolayer MoS$_\text{2}$, MoSe$_\text{2}$, WS$_\text{2}$, and WSe$_\text{2}$, computed $GW$ band gaps agree on average within 50 meV with plane-wave-based reference calculations. $G_0W_0$ band structures are obtained in less than two days on a laptop (Intel i5, 192 GB RAM) or in less than 30 minutes using 1024 cores. Overall, our work provides an efficient and scalable framework for $GW$ calculations on atomically thin materials.

Nonlinearity of the Fidelity in Open Qudit Systems: Gate and Noise Dependence in High-dimensional Quantum Computing

High-dimensional quantum computing has generated significant interest due to its potential to address scalability and error correction challenges faced by traditional qubit-based systems. This paper investigates the Average Gate Fidelity (AGF) of single qudit systems under Markovian noise in the Lindblad formalism, extending previous work by developing a comprehensive theoretical framework for the calculation of higher-order correction terms. We derive general expressions for the perturbative expansion of the Average Gate Infidelity (AGI) in terms of the environmental coupling coefficient and validate these with extensive numerical simulations, emphasizing the transition from linear to nonlinear behaviour in the strong coupling regime. Our findings highlight the dependence of AGI on qudit dimensionality, quantum gate choice, and noise strength, providing critical insights for optimising quantum gate design and error correction protocols. Additionally, we utilise our framework to identify universal bounds for the AGI in the strong coupling regime and explore the practical implications for enhancing the performance of near-term qudit architectures. This study offers a robust foundation for future research and development in high-dimensional quantum computing, contributing to the advancement of robust, high-fidelity quantum operations.

Elucidating the Physical and Mathematical Properties of the Prouhet-Thue-Morse Sequence in Quantum Computing

This study explores the applications of the Prouhet-Thue-Morse (PTM) sequence in quantum computing, highlighting its mathematical elegance and practical relevance. We demonstrate the critical role of the PTM sequence in quantum error correction, in noise-resistant quantum memories, and in providing insights into quantum chaos. Notably, we demonstrate how the PTM sequence naturally appears in Ising X-X interacting systems, leading to a proposed robust encoding of quantum memories in such systems. Furthermore, connections to number theory, including the Riemann zeta function, bridge quantum computing with pure mathematics. Our findings emphasize the PTM sequence's importance in understanding the mathematical structure of quantum computing systems and the development of the full potential of quantum technologies and invite further interdisciplinary research.
