Real poles with opposite-sign residues in the non-perturbative quark propagator

We investigate the analytic structure of the quark propagator in the Landau gauge by dynamically coupling the standard gap equation to the non-perturbative quark-gluon vertex. Employing the full vertex basis, we demonstrate that for sub-GeV time-like momenta, the proper inclusion of the underlying dynamics leads to a pair of real poles with opposite-sign residues. In particular, in stark contradistinction to the results obtained in widely used approximations, we see no sign of complex conjugate poles. This distinctive analytic structure evades conceptual shortcomings frequently associated with complex conjugate poles while remaining fully compatible with the aspects of color confinement related to positivity violation. Crucially, this novel behavior is governed by a dominant triplet of vertex form factors: the tree-level component, the anomalous chromomagnetic moment, and a component we label as "spin-momentum curvature". By gradually tuning the individual strengths of these components, we demonstrate that while they contribute in distinct ways to the quark propagator, their joint action is vital for stabilizing the system. Together, they place the low-lying poles onto the real axis while producing a robust constituent quark mass of $350$ MeV.

Center phase transition from matter propagators in (scalar) QCD

Novel order parameters for the confinement-deconfinement phase transition of quenched QCD and fundamentally charged scalar QCD are presented. Similar to the well-known dual condensate, they are defined via generalized matter propagators with $U(1)$-valued boundary conditions. The order parameters are easily accessible with functional methods. Their validity and accessibility is explicitly demonstrated by numerical studies of the Dyson-Schwinger equations for the matter propagators. Even in the case of heavy scalar matter, where the propagator does not show a signature of the phase transition, a discontinuity due to the transition can be extracted in the order parameters, establishing also fundamentally charged scalar matter as a probe for color confinement.

QCD and strongly coupled gauge theories: challenges and perspectives

We highlight the progress, current status, and open challenges of QCD-driven physics, in theory and in experiment. We discuss how the strong interaction is intimately connected to a broad sweep of physical problems, in settings ranging from astrophysics and cosmology to strongly-coupled, complex systems in particle and condensed-matter physics, as well as to searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. We also discuss how success in describing the strong interaction impacts other fields, and, in turn, how such subjects can impact studies of the strong interaction. In the course of the work we offer a perspective on the many research streams which flow into and out of QCD, as well as a vision for future developments.

Panel discussion: What {\it don't} we know about confinement?

The participants in this discussion session of the QCHS 9 meeting were each asked the following question: "What would be the most useful piece of information that you could obtain, by whatever means, that would advance your own program, and/or our general understanding of confinement?" This proceedings contains a brief summary of each panel member's contribution to the discussion, provided by the panel members themselves.

Baryons in and beyond the quark-diquark model

We examine the nucleon's electromagnetic form factors in a Poincare-covariant Faddeev framework. The three-quark core contributions to the form factors are obtained by employing a quark-diquark approximation. We implement the self-consistent solution for the quark-photon vertex from its inhomogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation. We find that the resulting transverse parts which add to the Ball-Chiu vertex have no significant impact on nucleon magnetic moments. The current-quark mass evolution of the form factors agrees with results from lattice QCD.

Delta properties in the rainbow-ladder truncation of Dyson-Schwinger equations

We present a calculation of the three-quark core contribution to nucleon and Delta-baryon masses and Delta electromagnetic form factors in a Poincare-covariant Faddeev approach. A consistent setup for the dressed-quark propagator, the quark-quark, quark-'diquark' and quark-photon interactions is employed, where all ingredients are solutions of their respective Dyson-Schwinger or Bethe-Salpeter equations in a rainbow-ladder truncation. The resulting Delta electromagnetic form factors concur with present experimental and lattice data.

Covariant solution of the three-quark problem in quantum field theory: the nucleon

We provide details on a recent solution of the nucleon's covariant Faddeev equation in an explicit three-quark approach. The full Poincare-covariant structure of the three-quark amplitude is implemented through an orthogonal basis obtained from a partial-wave decomposition. We employ a rainbow-ladder gluon exchange kernel which allows for a comparison with meson Bethe-Salpeter and baryon quark-diquark studies. We describe the construction of the three-quark amplitude in full detail and compare it to a notation widespread in recent publications. Finally, we discuss first numerical results for the nucleon's amplitude.

Nucleon mass from a covariant three-quark Faddeev equation

We report the first study of the nucleon where the full Poincare-covariant structure of the three-quark amplitude is implemented in the Faddeev equation. We employ an interaction kernel which is consistent with contemporary studies of meson properties and aspects of chiral symmetry and its dynamical breaking, thus yielding a comprehensive approach to hadron physics. The resulting current-mass evolution of the nucleon mass compares well with lattice data and deviates only by ~5% from the quark-diquark result obtained in previous studies.

Faddeev equations: a view of baryon properties

We present a calculation of the three-quark core contribution to the mass of the Delta-baryon in a Poincare-covariant Faddeev framework. A consistent setup for the dressed-quark propagator, the quark-quark and quark-diquark interactions is used, where all the ingredients are solutions of their respective Dyson-Schwinger or Bethe-Salpeter equations in rainbow-ladder truncation. We discuss the evolution of the Delta mass with the current-quark mass and compare to the previously obtained mass of the nucleon.

On unifying the description of meson and baryon properties

A Poincare' covariant Faddeev equation is presented, which enables the simultaneous prediction of meson and baryon observables using the leading-order in a truncation of the Dyson-Schwinger equations that can systematically be improved. The solution describes a nucleon's dressed-quark core. The evolution of the nucleon mass with current-quark mass is discussed. A nucleon-photon current, which can produce nucleon form factors with realistic Q^2-evolution, is described. Axial-vector diquark correlations lead to a neutron Dirac form factor that is negative, with r_1^{nu}>r_1^{nd}. The proton electric-magnetic form factor ratio falls with increasing Q^2.

Perspective on rainbow-ladder truncation

Prima facie the systematic implementation of corrections to the rainbow-ladder truncation of QCD's Dyson-Schwinger equations will uniformly reduce in magnitude those calculated mass-dimensioned results for pseudoscalar and vector meson properties that are not tightly constrained by symmetries. The aim and interpretation of studies employing rainbow-ladder truncation are reconsidered in this light.

A covariant view on the nucleons' quark core

Established results for the quark propagator in Landau gauge QCD, together with a detailed comparison to lattice data, are used to formulate a Poincare covariant Faddeev approach to the nucleon. The resultant three-quark amplitudes describe the quark core of the nucleon. The nucleon's mass and its electromagnetic form factors are calculated as functions of the current quark mass. The corresponding results together with charge radii and magnetic moments are discussed in connection with the contributions from various ingredients in a consistent calculation of nucleon properties, as well as the role of the pion cloud in such an approach.

What the Infrared Behaviour of QCD Vertex Functions in Landau gauge can tell us about Confinement

The infrared behaviour of Landau gauge QCD vertex functions is investigated employing a skeleton expansion of the Dyson-Schwinger and Renormalization Group equations. Results for the ghost-gluon, three-gluon, four-gluon and quark-gluon vertex functions are presented. Positivity violation of the gluon propagator, and thus gluon confinement, is demonstrated. Results of the Dyson-Schwinger equations for a finite volume are compared to corresponding lattice data. It is analytically demonstrated that a linear rising potential between heavy quarks can be generated by infrared singularities in the dressed quark-gluon vertex. The selfconsistent mechanism that generates these singularities necessarily entails the scalar Dirac amplitudes of the full vertex and the quark propagator. These can only be present when chiral symmetry is broken, either explicitly or dynamically.

Solving coupled Dyson--Schwinger equations on a compact manifold

We present results for the gluon and ghost propagators in SU(N) Yang--Mills theory on a four-torus at zero and nonzero temperatures from a truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations. When compared to continuum solutions at zero temperature sizeable modifications due to the finite volume of the manifold, especially in the infrared, are found. Effects due to non-vanishing temperatures T, on the other hand, are minute for T < 250 MeV.

Aspects of the confinement mechanism in Coulomb-gauge QCD

Phenomenological consequences of the infrared singular, instantaneous part of the gluon propagator in Coulomb gauge are investigated. The corresponding quark Dyson-Schwinger equation is solved, neglecting retardation and transverse gluons and regulating the resulting infrared singularities. While the quark propagator vanishes as the infrared regulator goes to zero, the frequency integral over the quark propagator stays finite and well-defined. Solutions of the homogeneous Bethe-Salpeter equation for the pseudoscalar and vector mesons as well as for scalar and axial-vector diquarks are obtained. In the limit of a vanishing infrared regulator the diquark masses diverge, while meson properties and diquark radii remain finite and well-defined. These features are interpreted with respect to the resulting aspects of confinement for colored quark-quark correlations.

On Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors: A Pre'cis

Electron scattering at large Q^2 probes a nucleon's quark core. This core's contribution to electromagnetic form factors may be calculated using Poincare' covariant Faddeev amplitudes combined with a nucleon-photon vertex that automatically fulfills a Ward-Takahashi identity for on-shell nucleons. The calculated behaviour of G_E^p(Q^2)/G_M^p(Q^2) on 2 6 GeV^2.
