On Nucleon Electromagnetic Form Factors

A Poincare' covariant Faddeev equation, which describes baryons as composites of confined-quarks and -nonpointlike-diquarks, is solved to obtain masses and Faddeev amplitudes for the nucleon and Delta. The amplitudes are a component of a nucleon-photon vertex that automatically fulfills the Ward-Takahashi identity for on-shell nucleons. These elements are sufficient for the calculation of a quark core contribution to the nucleons' electromagnetic form factors. An accurate description of the static properties is not possible with the core alone but the error is uniformly reduced by the incorporation of meson-loop contributions. Such contributions to form factors are noticeable for Q^2 < ~2 GeV^2 but vanish with increasing momentum transfer. Hence, larger Q^2 experiments probe the quark core. The calculated behaviour of G_E^p(Q^2)/G_M^p(Q^2) on Q^2 \in [2,6] GeV^2 agrees with that inferred from polarisation transfer data. Moreover, \sqrt{Q^2} F_2(Q^2)/F_1(Q^2) is approximately constant on this domain. These outcomes result from correlations in the proton's amplitude.

Analytic structure of the Landau gauge gluon propagator

The results of different non-perturbative studies agree on a power law as the infrared behavior of the Landau gauge gluon propagator. This propagator violates positivity and thus indicates the absence of the transverse gluons from the physical spectrum, i.e. gluon confinement. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed capturing all of its features. We comment also on related investigations for the Landau gauge quark propagator.

Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Landau gauge QCD

We summarise results for the propagators of Landau gauge QCD from the Green's functions approach and lattice calculations. The nonperturbative solutions for the ghost, gluon and quark propagators from a coupled set of Dyson-Schwinger equations agree almost quantitatively with corresponding lattice results. Similar unquenching effects are found in both approaches. The dynamically generated quark masses are close to `phenomenological' values. The chiral condensate is found to be large.

Dynamical Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Unquenched ${QED}_3$

We investigate dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in unquenched ${QED}_3$ using the coupled set of Dyson--Schwinger equations for the fermion and photon propagators. For the fermion-photon interaction we employ an ansatz which satisfies its Ward--Green--Takahashi identity. We present self-consistent analytical solutions in the infrared as well as numerical results for all momenta. In Landau gauge, we find a phase transition at a critical number of flavours of $N_f^{\mathrm crit} \approx 4$. In the chirally symmetric phase the infrared behaviour of the propagators is described by power laws with interrelated exponents. For $N_f=1$ and $N_f=2$ we find small values for the chiral condensate in accordance with bounds from recent lattice calculations. We investigate the Dyson--Schwinger equations in other linear covariant gauges as well. A comparison of their solutions to the accordingly transformed Landau gauge solutions shows that the quenched solutions are approximately gauge covariant, but reveals a significant amount of violation of gauge covariance for the unquenched solutions.

Dynamical Mass Generation in Landau gauge QCD

We summarise results on the infrared behaviour of Landau gauge QCD from the Green's functions approach and lattice calculations. Approximate, nonperturbative solutions for the ghost, gluon and quark propagators as well as first results for the quark-gluon vertex from a coupled set of Dyson-Schwinger equations are compared to quenched and unquenched lattice results. Almost quantitative agreement is found for all three propagators. Similar effects of unquenching are found in both approaches. The dynamically generated quark masses are close to `phenomenological' values. First results for the quark-gluon vertex indicate a complex tensor structure of the non-perturbative quark-gluon interaction.

Analytic structure of the gluon and quark propagators in Landau gauge QCD

In Landau gauge QCD the infrared behavior of the propagator of transverse gluons can be analytically determined to be a power law from Dyson-Schwinger equations. This propagator clearly shows positivity violation, indicating the absence of the transverse gluons from the physical spectrum, i.e. gluon confinement. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed capturing all important features. We provide arguments that the Landau gauge quark propagator possesses a singularity on the real timelike axis. For this propagator we find a positive definite Schwinger function.

Analytic properties of the Landau gauge gluon and quark propagators

We explore the analytic structure of the gluon and quark propagators of Landau gauge QCD from numerical solutions of the coupled system of renormalized Dyson--Schwinger equations and from fits to lattice data. We find sizable negative norm contributions in the transverse gluon propagator indicating the absence of the transverse gluon from the physical spectrum. A simple analytic structure for the gluon propagator is proposed. For the quark propagator we find evidence for a mass-like singularity on the real timelike momentum axis, with a mass of 350 to 500 MeV. Within the employed Green's functions approach we identify a crucial term in the quark-gluon vertex that leads to a positive definite Schwinger function for the quark propagator.

QCD Propagators at non-vanishing temperatures

We investigate the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators, especially their infrared properties, at non-vanishing temperatures. To this end we solve their Dyson-Schwinger equations on a torus and find an infrared enhanced ghost propagator and an infrared vanishing gluon propagator.

The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and the Infrared Behavior of Landau gauge QCD

Recent investigations of the Dyson-Schwinger equations and Monte-Carlo lattice calculations resulted in a coherent description of the fully dressed gluon, ghost and quark propagators in Landau gauge QCD. In the Dyson-Schwinger approach the infrared behaviour of these propagators is determined analytically. For finite spacelike momenta the gluon, ghost and quark propagators are compared to available corresponding results of lattice Monte-Carlo calculations. For all three propagators an almost quantitative agreement is found. These results for the non-perturbative propagators allow an analytical verification of the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion. Our numerical analysis clearly reveals positivity violation for the gluon propagator generated by a cut in the complex momentum plane. The non-perturbative strong running coupling resulting from these propagators possesses an infrared fixed point. The quark propagator obtained from quenched and unquenched calculations displays dynamical chiral symmetry breaking with quark masses close to ``phenomenological'' and lattice values. We confirm that linear extrapolations of the quark propagator for different bare masses to the chiral limit are inaccurate.

A Bethe--Salpeter Description of Light Mesons

We present a covariant approach to describe the low--lying scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector mesons as quark--antiquark bound states. This approach is based on an effective interaction modeling of the non--perturbative structure of the gluon propagator that enters the quark Schwinger--Dyson and meson Bethe--Salpeter equations. We extract the meson masses and compute the pion and kaon decay constants. We obtain a quantitatively correct description for pions, kaons and vector mesons while the calculated spectra of scalar and axialvector mesons suggest that their structure is more complex than being quark--antiquark bound states.

On the infrared behaviour of Gluons and Ghosts in Ghost-Antighost symmetric gauges

To investigate the possibility of a ghost-antighost condensate the coupled Dyson--Schwinger equations for the gluon and ghost propagators in Yang--Mills theories are derived in general covariant gauges, including ghost-antighost symmetric gauges. The infrared behaviour of these two-point functions is studied in a bare-vertex truncation scheme which has proven to be successful in Landau gauge. In all linear covariant gauges the same infrared behaviour as in Landau gauge is found: The gluon propagator is infrared suppressed whereas the ghost propagator is infrared enhanced. This infrared singular behaviour provides indication against a ghost-antighost condensate. In the ghost-antighost symmetric gauges we find that the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators cannot be determined when replacing all dressed vertices by bare ones. The question of a BRST invariant dimension two condensate remains to be further studied.

The Infrared Behaviour of the Running Coupling in Landau Gauge QCD

Approximate solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators as well as the running coupling in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theories are presented. These propagators obtained from the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations are in remarkable agreement with those of recent lattice calculations. The resulting running coupling possesses an infrared fixed point, $α_S(0) = 8.92/N_c$ for all gauge groups SU($N_c$). Above one GeV the running coupling rapidly approaches its perturbative form.

Nucleon form factors from a covariant quark core: limits in their description

In treating the relativistic three-quark problem, a dressed-quark propagator parameterization is used which is compatible with recent lattice data and pion observables. Furthermore two-quark correlations are modeled as a series of quark loops in the scalar and axialvector channel. The resulting reduced Faddeev equations are solved for nucleon and delta. Nucleon electromagnetic form factors are calculated in a fully covariant and gauge--invariant scheme. Whereas the proton electric form factor $G_E$ and the nucleon magnetic moments are described correctly, the neutron electric form factor and the ratio $G_E/G_M$ for the proton appear to be quenched. The influence of vector mesons on the form factors is investigated which amounts to a 25 percent modification of the electromagnetic proton radii within this framework.

Mesons in a Poincare Covariant Bethe-Salpeter Approach

We develop a covariant approach to describe the low-lying scalar, pseudoscalar, vector and axialvector mesons as quark-antiquark bound states. This approach is based on an effective interaction modeling of the non--perturbative structure of the gluon propagator that enters the quark Schwinger-Dyson and meson Bethe-Salpeter equations. We consistently treat these integral equations by precisely implementing the quark propagator functions that solve the Schwinger-Dyson equations into the Bethe-Salpeter equations in the relevant kinematical region. We extract the meson masses and compute the pion and kaon decay constants. We obtain a quantitatively correct description for pions, kaons and vector mesons while the calculated spectra of scalar and axialvector mesons suggest that their structure is more complex than being quark-antiquark bound states.

Infrared Exponents and Running Coupling of SU(N) Yang-Mills Theories

We present approximate solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators as well as the running coupling in Landau gauge Yang-Mills theories. We solve the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equations in flat Euclidean space-time without any angular approximation. This supplements recently obtained results employing a four-torus, i.e. a compact space-time manifold, as infrared regulator. We confirm previous findings deduced from an extrapolation with tori of different volumes: the gluon propagator is weakly vanishing in the infrared and the ghost propagator is highly singular. For non-vanishing momenta our propagators are in remarkable agreement with recent lattice calculations.

The Elusiveness of Infrared Critical Exponents in Landau Gauge Yang--Mills Theories

We solve a truncated system of coupled Dyson-Schwinger equations for the gluon and ghost propagators in SU($N_c$) Yang-Mills theories in Faddeev-Popov quantization on a four-torus. This compact space-time manifold provides an efficient mean to solve the gluon and ghost Dyson-Schwinger equations without any angular approximations. We verify that analytically two power-like solutions in the very far infrared seem possible. However, only one of these solutions can be matched to a numerical solution for non-vanishing momenta. For a bare ghost-gluon vertex this implies that the gluon propagator is only weakly infrared vanishing, $D_{gl}(k^2) \propto (k^2)^{2κ-1}$, $κ\approx 0.595$, and the ghost propagator is infrared singular, $D_{gh}(k^2) \propto (k^2)^{-κ-1}$. For non-vanishing momenta our solutions are in agreement with the results of recent SU(2) Monte-Carlo lattice calculations. The running coupling possesses an infrared fixed point. We obtain $α(0) = 8.92/N_c$ for all gauge groups SU($N_c$). Above one GeV the running coupling rapidly approaches its perturbative form.

Coupled fermion and boson production in a strong background mean-field

We derive quantum kinetic equations for fermion and boson production starting from a phi^4 Lagrangian with minimal coupling to fermions. Decomposing the scalar field into a mean-field part and fluctuations we obtain spontaneous pair creation driven by a self-interacting strong background field. The produced fermion and boson pairs are self-consistently coupled. Consequently back reactions arise from fermion and boson currents determining the time dependent self-interacting background mean-field. We explore the numerical solution in flux tube geometry for the time evolution of the mean-field as well as for the number- and energy densities for fermions and bosons. We find that after a characteristic time all energy is converted from the background mean-field to particle creation. Applying this general approach to the production of ``quarks'' and ``gluons'' a typical time scale for the collapse of the flux tube is 1.5 fm/c.

Relativistic Three-Quark Bound States in Separable Two-Quark Approximation

Baryons as relativistic bound states in 3-quark correlations are described by an effective Bethe-Salpeter equation when irreducible 3-quark interactions are neglected and separable 2-quark correlations are assumed. We present an efficient numerical method to calculate the nucleon mass and its covariant wave function in this quantum field theoretic quark-diquark model with quark-exchange interaction. Expanding the components of the spinorial wave function in terms of Chebyshev polynomials, the four-dimensional integral equations are in a first step reduced to a coupled set of one-dimensional ones. This set of linear and homogeneous equations defines a generalised eigenvalue problem. Representing the eigenvector corresponding to the largest eigenvalue, the Chebyshev moments are then obtained by iteration. The nucleon mass is implicitly determined by the eigenvalue, and its covariant wave function is reconstructed from the moments within the Chebyshev approximation.
