Fullerenes in the circumstellar medium of Herbig Ae/Be stars: Insights from the Spitzer mid-infrared spectral catalog

This study presents the largest mid-infrared spectral catalog of Herbig Ae/Be stars to date, containing the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph spectra of 126 stars. Based on the catalog analysis, two prominent infrared vibrational modes of C\textsubscript{60} bands at 17.4 $μm$ and 18.9 $μm$ are detected in the spectra of nine sources, while 7.0 $μm$ feature is identified in the spectra of HD 319896. The spectral index analysis and the comparison of the known sources with C\textsubscript{60} features indicated that there exist two different types of emission classes among the sample of stars. The infrared spectra of six Herbig Ae/Be stars in this study resemble that of reflection nebulae, and their association with previously known reflection nebulae is confirmed. In the case of three Herbig Ae/Be stars we report the tentative evidence of C\textsubscript{60} emission features originating from the circumstellar disk or nearby diffused emission region. The detection fraction of C\textsubscript{60} in the total HAeBe star sample is $\sim$ 7\%, whereas the detection fraction is 30\% for HAeBe stars associated with nebulosity. In the catalog, C\textsubscript{60} is exclusively present in the circumstellar regions of B type Herbig Ae/Be stars, with no evidence of its presence detected in stars with later spectral types. The present study has increased the number of young stellar objects and reflection nebulae detected with C\textsubscript{60} multifold, which can help in understanding the excitation and formation pathway of the species.

HI line analysis of Herbig Ae/Be stars using X-Shooter spectra

Herbig Ae/Be stars are intermediate-mass pre-main sequence stars undergoing accretion through their circumstellar disk. The optical and infrared (IR) spectra of HAeBe stars show HI emission lines belonging to Balmer, Paschen and Brackett series. We use the archival X-Shooter spectra available for 109 HAeBe stars from Vioque et al. (2018) and analyse the various HI lines present in them. We segregated the stars into different classes based on the presence of higher-order lines in different HI series. We discuss the dependence of the appearance of higher-order lines on the stellar parameters. We find that most massive and younger stars show all the higher-order lines in emission. The stars showing only lower-order lines have Teff < 12000 K and an age range of 5-10 Myr. We perform a Case B line ratio analysis for a sub-sample of stars showing most of the HI lines in emission. We note that all but four stars belonging to the sub-sample show lower HI line ratios than theoretical values, owing to the emitting medium being optically thick. The HI line flux ratios do not depend on the star's spectral type. Further, from the line ratios of lower-order lines and Paschen higher-order lines, we note that line ratios of most HAeBe stars match with electron density value in the range 10^9 - 10^11 cm^-3. The electron temperature, however, could not be ascertained with confidence using the line ratios studied in this work.

Emission line star catalogues post-Gaia DR3: A validation of Gaia DR3 data using LAMOST OBA emission catalogue

Gaia DR3 and further releases have the potential to identify and categorise new emission-line stars in the Galaxy. We perform a comprehensive validation of astrophysical parameters from Gaia DR3 with the spectroscopically estimated emission-line star parameters from LAMOST OBA emission catalogue. We compare different astrophysical parameters provided by Gaia DR3 with those estimated using LAMOST spectra. By using a larger sample of emission-line stars, we perform a global polynomial and piece-wise linear fit to update the empirical relation to convert Gaia DR3 pseudo-equivalent width to observed equivalent width, after removing the weak emitters from the analysis. We find that the emission-line source classifications given by DR3 is in reasonable agreement with the classification from LAMOST OBA emission catalogue. The astrophysical parameters estimated by esphs module from Gaia DR3 provides a better estimate when compared to gspphot and gspspec. A second-degree polynomial relation is provided along with piece-wise linear fit parameters for the equivalent width conversion. We notice that the LAMOST stars with weak Hα emission are not identified to be in emission from BP/RP spectra. This suggests that emission-line sources identified by Gaia DR3 is incomplete. In addition, Gaia DR3 provides valuable information about the binary and variable nature of a sample of emission-line stars.

Effect of interlayer exchange coupling in spin-torque nano oscillator

The dynamics of the magnetization of the free layer in a spin-torque nano oscillator (STNO) influenced by a noncollinear alignment between the magnetizations of the free and pinned layers due to an interlayer exchange coupling has been investigated theoretically. The orientations of the magnetization of the free layer with that of the pinned layer have been computed through the macrospin model and they are found to match well with experimental results. The bilinear and biquadratic coupling strengths make the current to switch the magnetization between two states or oscillate steadily. The expressions for the critical currents between which oscillations are possible and the critical bilinear coupling strength below which oscillations are not possible are derived. The frequency of the oscillations is shown to be tuned and increased to or above 300 GHz by the current which is the largest to date among nanopillar-shaped STNOs.

Decoding the X-ray flare from MAXI J0709-159 using optical spectroscopy and multi-epoch photometry

We present a follow-up study on the recent detection of two X-ray flaring events by MAXI/GSC observations in soft and hard X-rays from MAXI J0709-159 in the direction of HD 54786 (LY CMa), on 2022 January 25. The X-ray luminosity during the flare was around 10^(37) erg/s (MAXI), which got reduced to 10^(32) erg/s (NuSTAR) after the flare. We took low-resolution spectra of HD 54786 from HCT and VBT facilities in India, on 2022 February 1 and 2. In addition to H-alpha emission, we found emission lines of He I in the optical spectrum of this star. By comparing our spectrum of the object with those from literature we found that He I lines show variability. Using photometric study we estimate that the star is having effective temperature of 20000 K. Although HD 54786 is reported as a supergiant in previous studies, our analysis favours it to be evolving off the main sequence in the Color-Magnitude Diagram. We could not detect any infrared excess, ruling out the possibility of IR emission from a dusty circumstellar disc. Our present study suggests that HD 54786 is a Be/X-ray binary system with a compact object companion, possibly a neutron star.

Study of Classical Be stars in open clusters older than 100 Myr

We performed the slitless spectroscopic survey to identify Classical (CBe) stars in open clusters older than 100 Myr. Observing a sample of 71 open clusters, we identified 13 CBe stars in 11 open clusters, one of, which (TYC 2679-432-1) is a new detection. The 13 CBe stars show both H$α$ in emission and IR excess, which confirm that they possess gaseous circumstellar discs. Two more CBe stars are found to exhibit H$α$ in absorption for the first time, indicating that might be passing through disc-less episode presently. The spectral type estimation is done for all these 15 stars and it is noticed that they belong to B0.5 -- B8 type. Moreover, we found that the distribution of our sample is peaking near late B-types as expected.

Spin Torque Oscillations Triggered by In-plane Field

We study the dynamics of a spin torque nano oscillator that consists of parallelly magnetized free and pinned layers by numerically solving the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation in the presence of a field-like torque. We observe that an in-plane magnetic field which is applied for a short interval of time ($<$1ns) triggers the magnetization to exhibit self-oscillations from low energy initial magnetization state. Also, we confirm that the frequency of oscillations can be tuned over the range $\sim$25 GHz to $\sim$72 GHz by current, even in the absence of field-like torque. We find the frequency enhancement up to 10 GHz by the presence of field-like torque. We determine the Q-factor for different frequencies and show that it increases with frequency. Our analysis with thermal noise confirms that the system is stable against thermal noise and the dynamics is not altered appreciably by it.

Spin-transfer torque driven intrinsic localized spin excitations in the presence of field-like torque

We study the existence of intrinsic localized one-spin excitation in the Heisenberg one-dimensional ferromagnetic spin chain in the presence of perpendicular and parallel external magnetic fields and current with spin-transfer torque and field-like torque. The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski(LLGS) equation is exactly solved for the one spin excitation in the absence of onsite anisotropy for the excitations of spin with fields perpendicular and parallel to the chain. We show the removal of damping in the spin excitations by appropriately introducing current and also the enhancement of angular frequency of the oscillations due to field-like torque in the case of both perpendicular and parallel field. The exactness of the analytical results is verified by matching with numerical counterparts. Further, we numerically confirm the existence of in-phase and anti-phase stable synchronized oscillations for two spin-excitations in the presence of current with perpendicular field and field-like torque.

Clustering of low mass stars around Herbig Be star IL Cep -- Evidence of "Rocket Effect" using Gaia EDR3 ?

We study the formation and the kinematic evolution of the early type Herbig Be star IL Cep and its environment. The young star is a member of the Cep OB3 association, at a distance of 798$\pm$9 pc, and has a "cavity" associated with it. We found that the B0V star HD 216658, which is astrometrically associated with IL Cep, is at the center of the cavity. From the evaluation of various pressure components created by HD 216658, it is established that the star is capable of creating the cavity. We identified 79 co-moving stars of IL Cep at 2 pc radius from the analysis of {\textit Gaia} EDR3 astrometry. The transverse velocity analysis of the co-moving stars shows that they belong to two different populations associated with IL Cep and HD 216658, respectively. Further analysis confirms that all the stars in the IL Cep population are mostly coeval ($\sim$ 0.1 Myr). Infrared photometry revealed that there are 26 Class II objects among the co-moving stars. The stars without circumstellar disk (Class III) are 65\% of all the co-moving stars. There are 9 intense H$α$ emission candidates identified among the co-moving stars using IPHAS H$α$ narrow-band photometry. The dendrogram analysis on the Hydrogen column density map identified 11 molecular clump structures on the expanding cavity around IL Cep, making it an active star-forming region. The formation of the IL Cep stellar group due to the "rocket effect" by HD 216658 is discussed.

Large Amplitude Spin-Hall Oscillations due to Field-like Torque

Large amplitude spin-Hall oscillations are identified in a ferromagnetic layer with two perpendicular in-plane easy axis in the presence of field-like torque without any polarizer and external field. The analytical study confirms the possibility of oscillations in the presence of field-like torque. The investigation shows that the oscillation frequency can be tuned from 2 GHz to 80 GHz by current and enhanced by field-like torque. Further, the enhancement of frequency along with the Q-factor by current and field-like torque is also observed.

Discovery of an M-type Companion to the Herbig Ae Star V1787 Ori

The intermediate mass Herbig Ae star V1787 Ori is a member of the L1641 star-forming region in the Orion A molecular cloud. We report the detection of an M-type companion to V1787 Ori at a projected separation of 6.66" (corresponding to 2577 au), from the analysis of VLT/NACO adaptive optics $K_s$-band image. Using astrometric data from Gaia DR2, we show that V1787 Ori A and B share similar distance ($d$ $\sim$ 387 pc) and proper motion, indicating that they are physically associated. We estimate the spectral type of V1787 Ori B to be M5 $\pm$ 2 from color--spectral type calibration tables and template matching using SpeX spectral library. By fitting PARSEC models in the Pan-STARRS color-magnitude diagram, we find that V1787 Ori B has an age of 8.1$^{+1.7}_{-1.5}$ Myr and a mass of 0.39$^{+0.02}_{-0.05}$ $M_\odot$. We show that V1787 Ori is a pre-main sequence wide binary system with a mass ratio of 0.23. Such a low mass ratio system is rarely identified in Herbig Ae/Be binary systems. We conclude this work with a discussion on possible mechanisms for the formation of V1787 Ori wide binary system.

Identification of new Classical Ae stars in the Galaxy using LAMOST DR5

We report the first systematic study to identify and characterize a sample of classical Ae stars in the Galaxy. The spectra of these stars were retrieved from the A-star catalog using the Large sky Area Multi-Object fiber Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST) survey. We identified the emission-line stars in this catalog from which 159 are confirmed as classical Ae stars. This increases the sample of known classical Ae stars by about nine times from the previously identified 21 stars. The evolutionary phase of classical Ae stars in this study is confirmed from the relatively small mid- and far-infrared excess and from their location in the optical color-magnitude diagram. We estimated the spectral type using MILES spectral templates and identified Classical Ae stars beyond A3, for the first time. The prominent emission lines in the spectra within the wavelength range 3700 -- 9000 Å are identified and compared with the features present in classical Be stars. The Hα emission strength of the stars in our sample show a steady decrease from late-B type to Ae stars, suggesting that the disc size may be dependent on the spectral type. Interestingly, we noticed emission lines of Fe{\sc ii}, O{\sc i} and Paschen series in the spectrum of some classical Ae stars. These lines are supposed to fade out by late B-type and should not be present in Ae stars. Further studies, including spectra with better resolution, is needed to correlate these results with the rotation rates of classical Ae stars.

Influence of field-like torque in synchronization of spin torque oscillators

The magnetization dynamics of two parallelly coupled spin torque oscillators, destabilization of steady states and removal of multistability, are investigated by taking into account the influence of field-like torque. It is shown that the existence of such torque can cancel the effect of damping and can, therefore, cause the oscillators to exhibit synchronized oscillations in response to direct current. Further, our results show that the presence of field-like torque enhances the power and Q-factor of the synchronized oscillations. The validity of the above results is confirmed by numerical and analytical studies based on the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation.

Frequency enhancement and power tunability in tilted polarizer spin-torque nano oscillator

In the absence of an applied magnetic field, a spin-torque nano oscillator(STNO) with a tilted polarizer is studied using numerical simulation of the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation. We find considerable enhancement of frequency by tilting the polarizer out-of-plane appropriately. Also, we observe improved tunability of frequency of oscillations from 15 GHz to 75 GHz and increment in the power spectral density by current and tilt angle. In addition, our findings and insights pave a simple way for nanoscale level microwave generators to be implemented.

Squeezing in resonance fluorescence via vacuum induced coherences

The squeezing spectrum of the fluorescence field emitted from a four-level atom in $J=1/2$ to $J=1/2$ configuration driven by two coherent fields is studied. We find that the squeezing properties of the fluorescence radiation are significantly influenced by the presence of vacuum-induced coherence in the atomic system. It is shown that such coherence induces spectral squeezing in phase quadratures of the fluorescence light for both weak and strong driving fields. The dependence of the squeezing spectrum on the relative phase of the driving fields is also investigated. Effects such as enhancement or suppression of the squeezing peaks are shown in the spectrum as the relative phase is varied. An analytical explanation of the numerical findings is presented using dressed-states of the atom-field system.

On the mass accretion rate and infrared excess in Herbig Ae/Be Stars

The present study makes use of the unprecedented capability of the Gaia mission to obtain the stellar parameters such as distance, age, and mass of HAeBe stars. The accuracy of Gaia DR2 astrometry is demonstrated from the comparison of the Gaia DR2 distances of 131 HAeBe stars with the previously estimated values from the literature. This is one of the initial studies to estimate the age and mass of a confirmed sample of HAeBe stars using both the photometry and distance from the Gaia mission. Mass accretion rates are calculated from $Hα$ line flux measurements of 106 HAeBe stars. Since we used distances and the stellar masses derived from the Gaia DR2 data in the calculation of mass accretion rate, our estimates are more accurate than previous studies. The mass accretion rate is found to decay exponentially with age, from which we estimated a disk dissipation timescale of $1.9\pm 0.1$ Myr. Mass accretion rate and stellar mass exhibits a power law relation of the form, $\dot{M}_{acc}$ $\propto$ $M_{*}^{2.8\pm0.2}$. From the distinct distribution in the values of the infrared spectral index, $n_{2-4.6}$, we suggest the possibility of difference in the disk structure between Herbig Be and Herbig Ae stars.

Fluorescence control through vacuum induced coherences

The resonance fluorescence of a four-level atom in J = 1/2 to J = 1/2 transition driven by two coherent fields is studied. We find that the incoherent fluorescence spectrum shows a direct indication of vacuum-induced coherence in the atomic system. We show that such coherence manifests itself via an enhancement or suppression of the spectral peaks in the $π$-polarized fluorescence. The effect of the relative phase of the driving fields on the spectral features is also investigated. We show that phase-dependent enhancement or suppression of the fluorescence peaks appears in the incoherent spectrum emitted along the $σ$ transitions. It is found that this phase dependence occurs because of the polarization-detection scheme employed for the observation of the fluorescence light. We present an analytical explanation, based on dressed-states of the atom-field system, to interpret the numerical results.
