Electronic Landscape of Ce-based Intermetallics: CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ at an Extreme

CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ is an exemplary correlated electron metal that features two domes of unconventional superconductivity in its temperature-pressure phase diagram. The first dome surrounds an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, whereas the more exotic second dome may span the termination point of a line of $f$-electron valence transitions. This behavior has received intense interest, but what has been missing are ways to access the high pressure behavior under milder conditions. Here we study Si $\rightarrow$ P chemical substitution, which compresses the unit cell volume but simultaneously weakens the hybridization between the $f$- and conduction electron states and encourages complex magnetism. At concentrations that show magnetism, applied pressure suppresses the magnetic ordering temperature and superconductivity is recovered for samples with low disorder. These results reveal that the electronic behavior in this system is controlled by a nontrivial combination of effects from unit cell volume and electronic shell filling. Guided by this topography we discuss prospects for uncovering a valence fluctuation quantum phase transition in the broader family of Ce-based ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type materials through chemical substitution.

Electronic Structure and Magnetism in the Layered Triangular Lattice Compound CeAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$

Results are reported for the $f$-electron intermetallic CeAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$, where the atomic arrangement of the cerium ions creates the conditions for geometric frustration. Despite this, magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that the low temperature magnetic exchange interaction is weak, resulting in marginally frustrated behavior and ordering near $T_{\rm{M}}$ $\approx$ 1.4 K. This occurs within a metallic Kondo lattice, where electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements show that the Kondo-driven electronic correlations are negligible. Quantum oscillations are detected in ac-magnetic susceptibility measurements and uncover small charge carrier effective masses. Electronic structure calculations reveal that when the experimentally observed antiferromagnetic exchange interaction and the on-$f$-site Coulomb repulsion (Hubbard) U are considered, the $f$-electron bands move away from the Fermi level, resulting in electronic behavior that is dominated by the $s$-, $p$-, and $d$- bands, which are all characterized by light electron masses. Thus, CeAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$ provides a starting point for investigating geometric magnetic frustration in a cerium lattice without strong Kondo hybridization, where calculations provide useful guidance.

Hybridization gap in the heavy-fermion compound UPd$_2$Al$_3$ via quasiparticle scattering spectroscopy

We present results from point-contact spectroscopy of the antiferromagnetic heavy-fermion superconductor UPd$_2$Al$_3$: conductance spectra are taken from single crystals with two major surface orientations as a function of temperature and magnetic field, and analyzed using a theory of co-tunneling into an Anderson lattice. Spectroscopic signatures are clearly identified including the distinct asymmetric double-peak structure arising from the opening of a hybridization gap when a coherent heavy Fermi liquid is formed. Both the hybridization gap, found to be 7.2 $\pm$ 0.3 meV at 4 K, and the conductance enhancement above a flat background decrease upon increasing temperature. While the hybridization gap is extrapolated to remain finite up to $\sim$28 K, close to the temperature around which the magnetic susceptibility displays a broad peak, the conductance enhancement vanishes at $\sim$18 K, slightly above the antiferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_\textrm{N}$ $\approx$ 14 K). This rapid decrease of the conductance enhancement is understood as a consequence of the junction drifting away from the ballistic regime due to increased scattering off magnons associated with the localized U 5$f$ electrons. This shows that while the hybridization gap opening is not directly associated with the antiferromagnetic ordering, its visibility in the conductance is greatly affected by the temperature-dependent magnetic excitations. Our findings are not only consistent with the 5$f$ dual-nature picture in the literature but also shed new light on the interplay between the itinerant and localized electrons in UPd$_2$Al$_3$.

Landau level spectroscopy of massive Dirac fermions in single-crystalline ZrTe5 thin flakes

We report infrared magneto-spectroscopy studies on thin crystals of an emerging Dirac material ZrTe5 near the intrinsic limit. The observed structure of the Landau level transitions and zero-field infrared absorption indicate a two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic structure, similar to that in graphene but with a small relativistic mass corresponding to a 9.4 meV energy gap. Measurements with circularly polarized light reveal a significant electron-hole asymmetry, which leads to splitting of the Landau level transitions at high magnetic fields. Our model, based on the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang effective Hamiltonian, quantitatively explains all observed transitions, determining the values of the Fermi velocity, Dirac mass (or gap), electron-hole asymmetry, and electron and hole g-factors.

Domain engineering of the metastable domains in the 4f-uniaxial-ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B

In search of novel, improved materials for magnetic data storage and spintronic devices, compounds that allow a tailoring of magnetic domain shapes and sizes are essential. Good candidates are materials with intrinsic anisotropies or competing interactions, as they are prone to host various domain phases that can be easily and precisely selected by external tuning parameters such as temperature and magnetic field. Here, we utilize vector magnetic fields to visualize directly the magnetic anisotropy in the uniaxial ferromagnet CeRu$_2$Ga$_2$B. We demonstrate a feasible control both globally and locally of domain shapes and sizes by the external field as well as a smooth transition from single stripe to bubble domains, which opens the door to future applications based on magnetic domain tailoring.

Quantum critical scaling in the disordered itinerant ferromagnet UCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge

Belitz-Kirkpatrick-Vojta (BKV) theory shows in excellent agreement with experiment that ferromagnetic quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in clean metals are generally first-order due to the coupling of the magnetization to electronic soft modes, in contrast to the classical analogue that is an archetypical second-order phase transition. For disordered metals BKV theory predicts that the second order nature of the QPT is restored because the electronic soft modes change their nature from ballistic to diffusive. Our low-temperature magnetization study identifies the ferromagnetic QPT in the disordered metal UCo$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Ge as the first clear example that exhibits the associated critical exponents predicted by BKV theory.

NMR Investigation of antiferromagnetism and coherence in URu$_2$Si$_{2-x}$P$_x$

We report $^{31}$P and $^{29}$Si NMR in single crystals of URu$_2$Si$_{2-x}$P$_x$ for $x=0.09$ and $x=0.33$. The spectra in the $x=0.33$ sample are consistent with a homogenous commensurate antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N \sim 37$ K. The Knight shift exhibits an anomaly at the coherence temperature, $T^*$, that is slightly enhanced with P doping. Spin lattice relaxation rate data indicate that the density of states is suppressed for $x=0.09$ below 30 K, similar to the undoped compound, but there is no evidence of long range order at this concentration. Our results suggest that Si substitution provides chemical pressure without inducing electronic inhomogeneity.

Candidate Elastic Quantum Critical Point in LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$

The structural properties of LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ have been studied using neutron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and heat capacity measurements. The continuous orthorhombic-monoclinic structural phase transition in LaCu$_{6}$ is suppressed linearly with Au substitution until a complete suppression of the structural phase transition occurs at the critical composition, $x_{c}$ = 0.3. Heat capacity measurements at low temperatures indicate residual structural instability at $x_c$ that extends well into the orthorhombic phase. The instability is ferroelastic in nature, with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing negligible coupling to electronic states near the Fermi level. The data and calculations presented here are consistent with the zero temperature termination of a continuous structural phase transition suggesting that the LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ series hosts an elastic quantum critical point.

Probing 5f-state configurations in URu2Si2 with U L3-edge resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy

Resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) was employed at the U L3 absorption edge and the La1 emission line to explore the 5f occupancy, nf, and the degree of 5f orbital delocalization in the hidden order compound URu2Si2. By comparing to suitable reference materials such as UF4, UCd11, and alpha-U, we conclude that the 5f orbital in URu2Si2 is at least partially delocalized with nf = 2.87 +/- 0.08, and does not change with temperature down to 10 K within the estimated error. These results place further constraints on theoretical explanations of the hidden order, especially those requiring a localized f2 ground state.

Uncovering the behavior of Hf2Te2P and the candidate Dirac metal Zr2Te2P

Results are reported for single crystal specimens of Hf$_2$Te$_2$P and compared to its structural analogue Zr$_2$Te$_2$P, which was recently proposed to be a potential reservoir for Dirac physics.[1] Both materials are produced using the iodine vapor transport method and the resulting crystals are exfoliable. The bulk electrical transport and thermodynamic properties indicate Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature for both compounds. Quantum oscillations are observed in magnetization measurements for fields applied parallel but not perpendicular to the $c$-axis, suggesting that the Fermi surfaces are quasi-two dimensional. Frequencies are determined from quantum oscillations for several parts of the Fermi surfaces. Lifshitz-Kosevich fits to the temperature dependent amplitudes of the oscillations reveal small effective masses, with a particularly small value $m^*$ $=$ 0.046$m_0$ for the α branch of Zr$_2$Te$_2$P. Electronic structure calculations are in good agreement with quantum oscillation results and illustrate the effect of a stronger spin-orbit interaction going from Zr to Hf. These results suggest that by using appropriate tuning parameters this class of materials may deepen the pool of novel Dirac phenomena.

Inter-planar coupling dependent magnetoresistivity in high purity layered metals

The magnetic field-induced changes in the conductivity of metals are the subject of intense interest, both for revealing new phenomena and as a valuable tool for determining their Fermi surface. Here, we report a hitherto unobserved magnetoresistive effect in ultra-clean layered metals, namely a negative longitudinal magnetoresistance that is capable of overcoming their very pronounced orbital one. This effect is correlated with the inter-layer coupling disappearing for fields applied along the so-called Yamaji angles where the inter-layer coupling vanishes. Therefore, it is intrinsically associated with the Fermi points in the field-induced quasi-one-dimensional electronic dispersion, implying that it results from the axial anomaly among these Fermi points. In its original formulation, the anomaly is predicted to violate separate number conservation laws for left- and right-handed chiral- (e.g. Weyl) fermions. Its observation in PdCoO$_2$, PtCoO$_2$ and Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ suggests that the anomaly affects the transport of clean conductors, particularly near the quantum limit.

Temperature - Pressure phase diagram of the cubic Laves phase Au$_2$Pb

The temperature ($T$) as a function of pressure ($P$) phase diagram is reported for the cubic Laves phase compound Au$_2$Pb, which was recently proposed to support linearly dispersing "topological" bands, together with conventional quadratic bands. At ambient pressure, Au$_2$Pb exhibits several structural phase transitions at $T_1$ $=$ 97 K, $T_2$ $=$ 51 K, and $T_3$ $=$ 40 K with superconductivity below $T_{\rm{c}}$ $=$ 1.2 K. Applied pressure results in a rich phase diagram where $T_1$, $T_2$, and $T_3$ evolve strongly with $P$ and a new phase is stabilized for $P$ $>$ 0.64 GPa that also supports superconductivity below 1.1 K. These observations suggest that Au$_2$Pb is an ideal system in which to investigate the relationship between structural degrees of freedom, band topology, and resulting anomalous behaviors.

Evidence for broken time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$

Recent experimental and theoretical interest in the superconducting phase of the heavy fermion material URu$_2$Si$_2$ has led to a number of proposals in which the superconducting order parameter breaks time-reversal symmetry (TRS). In this study we measured polar Kerr effect (PKE) as a function of temperature for several high-quality single crystals of URu$_2$Si$_2$. We find an onset of PKE below the superconducting transition that is consistent with a TRS-breaking order parameter. This effect appears to be independent of an additional, possibly extrinsic, PKE generated above the hidden order transition at $T_{HO}=17.5$ K, and contains structure below $T_c$ suggestive of additional physics within the superconducting state.

Chemical pressure tuning of URu$_2$Si$_2$ via isoelectronic substitution of Ru with Fe

We have used specific heat and neutron diffraction measurements on single crystals of URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ for Fe concentrations $x$ $\leq$ 0.7 to establish that chemical substitution of Ru with Fe acts as "chemical pressure" $P_{ch}$ as previously proposed by Kanchanavatee et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 84}, 245122 (2011)] based on bulk measurements on polycrystalline samples. Notably, neutron diffraction reveals a sharp increase of the uranium magnetic moment at $x=0.1$, reminiscent of the behavior at the "hidden order" (HO) to large moment antiferromagnetic (LMAFM) phase transition observed at a pressure $P_x\approx$ 0.5-0.7~GPa in URu$_2$Si$_2$. Using the unit cell volume determined from our measurements and an isothermal compressibility $κ_{T} = 5.2 \times 10^{-3}$ GPa$^{-1}$ for URu$_2$Si$_2$, we determine the chemical pressure $P_{ch}$ in URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ as a function of $x$. The resulting temperature $T$-chemical pressure $P_{ch}$ phase diagram for URu$_{2-x}$Fe$_x$Si$_2$ is in agreement with the established temperature $T$-external pressure $P$ phase diagram of URu$_2$Si$_2$.

Quantum Critical Fluctuations in the Heavy fermion compound Ce(Ni$_{0.935}$Pd$_{0.065}$)$_2$Ge$_2$

Electric resistivity, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, and inelastic neutron scattering experiments were performed on a single crystal of the heavy fermion compound Ce(Ni$_{0.935}$Pd$_{0.065}$)$_2$Ge$_2$ in order to study the spin fluctuations near an antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum critical point (QCP). The resistivity and the specific heat coefficient for $T \leq$ 1 K exhibit the power law behavior expected for a 3D itinerant AF QCP ($ρ(T) \sim T^{3/2}$ and $γ(T) \sim γ_0 - b T^{1/2}$). However, for 2 $\leq T \leq$ 10 K, the susceptibility and specific heat vary as $log T$ and the resistivity varies linearly with temperature. Furthermore, despite the fact that the resistivity and specific heat exhibit the non-Fermi liquid behavior expected at a QCP, the correlation length, correlation time, and staggered susceptibility of the spin fluctuations remain finite at low temperature. We suggest that these deviations from the divergent behavior expected for a QCP may result from alloy disorder.

Chirality density wave of the 'hidden order' phase in URu$_2$Si$_2$

A second-order phase transition is associated with emergence of an "order parameter" and a spontaneous symmetry breaking. For the heavy fermion superconductor URu$_2$Si$_2$, the symmetry of the order parameter associated with its ordered phase below 17.5 K has remained ambiguous despite 30 years of research, and hence is called "hidden order" (HO). Here we use polarization resolved Raman spectroscopy to specify the symmetry of the low energy excitations above and below the HO transition. These excitations involve transitions between interacting heavy uranium 5f orbitals, responsible for the broken symmetry in the HO phase. From the symmetry analysis of the collective mode, we determine that the HO parameter breaks local vertical and diagonal reflection symmetries at the uranium sites, resulting in crystal field states with distinct chiral properties, which order to a commensurate chirality density wave ground state.

CeCu_2Ge_2: Challenging our Understanding of Quantum Criticality

Here, we unveil evidence for a quantum phase-transition in CeCu_2Ge_2 which displays both an incommensurate spin-density wave (SDW) ground-state, and a strong renormalization of the quasiparticle effective masses (mu) due to the Kondo-effect. For all angles theta between an external magnetic field (H) and the crystallographic c-axis, the application of H leads to the suppression of the SDW-state through a 2^nd-order phase-transition at a theta-dependent critical-field H_p(theta) leading to the observation of small Fermi surfaces (FSs) in the paramagnetic (PM) state. For H || c-axis, these FSs are characterized by light mu's pointing also to the suppression of the Kondo-effect at H_p with surprisingly, no experimental evidence for quantum-criticality (QC). But as $H$ is rotated towards the a-axis, these mu's increase considerably becoming undetectable for θ> 56^0 between H and the c-axis. Around H_p^a~ 30 T the resistivity becomes proportional T which, coupled to the divergence of mu, indicates the existence of a field-induced QC-point at H_p^a(T=0 K). This observation, suggesting FS hot-spots associated with the SDW nesting-vector, is at odds with current QC scenarios for which the continuous suppression of all relevant energy scales at H_p(theta,T) should lead to a line of quantum-critical points in the H-theta plane. Finally, we show that the complexity of its magnetic phase-diagram(s) makes CeCu_2Ge_2 an ideal system to explore field-induced quantum tricritical and QC end-points.

Complex magnetism and strong electronic correlations in Ce2PdGe3

Single crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements are reported for the new tetragonal compound Ce$_{2}$PdGe$_{3}$, which forms in the space group $P4_{2}/mmc$ (\#131) $-$ a relative of the $α$-ThSi$_2$-type structure. Measurements reveal a two-part antiferromagnetic phase transition at $T_{\rm{N,1}}$ $=$ 10.7 K and $T_{\rm{N,2}}$ $=$ 9.6 K and subsequent ferromagnetic ordering near $T_{\rm{C}}$ $\approx$ 2.25 K. The ordered ground state emerges from a lattice of Ce ions that are hybridized with the conduction electrons, as revealed by the enhanced electronic coefficient of the specific heat $γ$ $\approx$ 50 mJ/mol-Ce-K$^2$ (extrapolated to $T$ $=$ 0 for $T$ $<$ $T_{\rm{C}}$). Electronic structure calculations suggest that there is significant f-electron weight in the density of states near the Fermi energy and that the Fermi surface includes sheets with distinct nesting vectors. Chemical/structural disorder also plays an important role, as evidenced by results from single crystal x-ray diffraction, the width of the peaks in the heat capacity at $T_{\rm{N}}$ and $T_{\rm{C}}$, and the small residual resistivity ratio RRR $=$ $ρ_{\rm{300K}}$/$ρ_{\rm{0}}$ $=$ 1.8.
