Evidence for a nematic component to the Hidden Order parameter in URu2Si2 from differential elastoresistance measurements

Measurements of the differential elastoresistance of URu$_2$Si$_2$ reveal that the fluctuations associated with the 17 K Hidden Order phase transition have a nematic component. Approaching the "Hidden Order" phase transition from above, the nematic susceptibility abruptly changes sign, indicating that while the Hidden Order phase has a nematic component, it breaks additional symmetries.

Probing the superconductivity of PrPt4Ge12 through Ce substitution

We report measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and thermoelectric power on the system Pr1-xCexPt4Ge12. Superconductivity is suppressed with increasing Ce concentration up to x = 0.5, above which there is no evidence for superconductivity down to 1.1 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient γ increases with increasing x from 48 mJ/mol K^2 up to 120 mJ/mol K^2 at x = 0.5, indicating an increase in strength of electronic correlations. The temperature dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures evolves from roughly T^3 for x = 0 to e^(-Δ/T) behavior for x = 0.05 and above, suggesting a crossover from a nodal to a nodeless superconducting energy gap or a transition from multiband to single-band superconductivity. Fermi-liquid behavior is observed throughout the series in low-temperature magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity measurements.

CeIrIn5: Superconductivity on a Magnetic Instability

We report the doping-induced antiferromagnetic state and Fermi liquid state that are connected by a superconducting region in a series of CeIrIn$_{5-x}$Hg$_x$, CeIrIn$_{5-x}$Sn$_x$ and CeIr$_{1-x}$Pt$_x$In$_5$ single crystals. Measurements of the specific heat $C(T)$ and electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ demonstrate that hole doping via Hg/In substitution gives rise to an antiferromagnetic ground state, but substitutions of In by Sn or Ir by Pt (electron doping) favor a paramagnetic Fermi liquid state. A cone-like non-Fermi liquid region is observed near CeIrIn$_5$, showing a diverging effective mass on the slightly Hg-doped side. The obtained temperature-doping phase diagram suggests that CeIrIn$_5$ is in proximity to an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, and heavy fermion superconductivity in this compound is mediated by magnetic quantum fluctuations rather than by valence fluctuations.

Bulk evidence for a time reversal symmetry broken superconducting state in URu2Si2

URu$_2$Si$_2$ is claimed to be a chiral \emph{d}-wave superconductor with a $k_z (k_x \pm ik_y)$ time-reversal symmetry broken orbital component for the Cooper pair wave-function, which contains both nodal points and lines of nodes \cite{kasahara, kasahara2}. To study the magnetic response of such an unconventional state through a bulk, thermodynamic probe, we measured the magnetic torque $τ$ in very high-quality, well-characterized URu$_2$Si$_2$ single-crystals \cite{altarawneh,altarawneh2} at high magnetic-fields $H$ and at very low temperatures $T$. The magnetization $M(H) \propto τ(H) /H$ of URu$_2$Si$_2$, in its superconducting state and for angles within $15^{\circ}$ from the \emph{ab}-plane, reveals a change in its sign for $H$ approaching $H_{c2}$: from a clear diamagnetic response dominated by the pinning of vortices to a state with a smaller but "paramagnetic-like" hysteretic response which \emph{disappears} at $H_{c2}$, thus implying that it is intrinsically related to the superconducting state. We argue that this anomalous, angular-dependent behavior is evidence for a time-reversal symmetry broken superconducting state in URu$_2$Si$_2$, although not necessarily for the $k_z (k_x \pm ik_y)$ state.

Absence of a static in-plane magnetic moment in the "hidden-order" phase of URu$_2$Si$_2$

We have carried out a careful magnetic neutron scattering study of the heavy fermion compound \URuSi\ to probe the possible existence of a small magnetic moment parallel to tetragonal basal plane in the "hidden-order" phase. This small in-plane component of the magnetic moment on the uranium sites $S_\parallel$ has been postulated by two recent models (rank-5 superspin/hastatic order) aiming to explain the hidden-order phase, in addition to the well-known out-of-plane component $S_\perp ~ \approx~0.01-0.04 $μ_B$/U. In order to separate $S_\parallel$ and $S_\perp$ we take advantage of the condition that for magnetic neutron scattering only the components of the magnetic structure that are perpendicular to the scattering vector $Q$ contribute to the magnetic scattering. We find no evidence for an in-plane magnetic moment $S_\parallel$. Based on the statistics of our measurement, we establish that the upper experimental limit for the size of any possible in-plane component is $S^{\rm{max}}_\parallel ~ \leq~1\cdot 10^{-3} ~μ_B$/U.

Pressure phase diagram and quantum criticality of CePt2In7 single crystals

We report the temperature-pressure (T-P) phase diagram of CePt2In7 single crystals, especially the pressure evolution of the antiferromagnetic order and the emergence of superconductivity, which have been studied by electrical resistivity and ac calorimetry under nearly hydrostatic environments. Compared with its polycrystalline counterpart, bulk superconductivity coexists with antiferromagnetism in a much narrower pressure region. The possible existence of textured superconductivity and local quantum criticality also are observed in CePt2In7, exhibiting a remarkable similarity with CeRhIn5.

Ferromagnetic quantum critical point in UCo1-xFexGe

We have carried out a comprehensive study of the UCo1-xFexGe series across the entire range of compositions 0 <= x <= 1, and report the results of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat, and electrical resistivity to uncover the T-x phase diagram. Substitution of Fe into UCoGe initially results in an increase in the Curie temperature and a rapid destruction of the superconductivity. Near x = 0.22, the ferromagnetic transition is suppressed to zero temperature at an apparent ferromagnetic itinerant electron quantum critical point, where the temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity and specific heat in this region reveal non-Fermi liquid behavior.

Transport, magnetic, and thermal properties of non-centrosymmetric Yb2Co12P7

We report magnetization and specific heat measurements down to 2 K and electrical resistivity down to millikelvin temperatures on polycrystalline samples of the non-centrosymmetric compound Yb2Co12P7. In addition to the previously reported ferromagnetic ordering of the cobalt sub-lattice at T_C = 136 K we find a magnetic transition below T_M = 5 K that is likely associated with ordering of the Yb ions. The broad nature of the specific heat anomaly suggests disordered magnetism and possible short range correlations well above T_M.

Superconductivity, magnetic order, and quadrupolar order in the filled skutterudite system Pr$_{1-x}$Nd$_{x}$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$

Superconductivity, magnetic order, and quadrupolar order have been investigated in the filled skutterudite system Pr$_{1-x}$Nd$_{x}$Os$_4$Sb$_{12}$ as a function of composition $x$ in magnetic fields up to 9 tesla and at temperatures between 50 mK and 10 K. Electrical resistivity measurements indicate that the high field ordered phase (HFOP), which has been identified with antiferroquadruoplar order, persists to $x$ $\sim$ 0.5. The superconducting critical temperature $T_c$ of PrOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is depressed linearly with Nd concentration to $x$ $\sim$ 0.55, whereas the Curie temperature $T_{FM}$ of NdOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ is depressed linearly with Pr composition to ($1-x$) $\sim$ 0.45. In the superconducting region, the upper critical field $H_{c2}(x,0)$ is depressed quadratically with $x$ in the range 0 $<$ $x$ $\lesssim$ 0.3, exhibits a kink at $x$ $\approx$ 0.3, and then decreases linearly with $x$ in the range 0.3 $\lesssim$ $x$ $\lesssim$ 0.6. The behavior of $H_{c2}(x,0)$ appears to be due to pair breaking caused by the applied magnetic field and the exhange field associated with the polarization of the Nd magnetic moments, in the superconducting state. From magnetic susceptibility measurements, the correlations between the Nd moments in the superconducting state appear to change from ferromagnetic in the range 0.3 $\lesssim$ $x$ $\lesssim$ 0.6 to antiferromagnetic in the range 0 $<$ $x$ $\lesssim$ 0.3. Specific heat measurements on a sample with $x$ $=$ 0.45 indicate that magnetic order occurs in the superconducting state, as is also inferred from the depression of $H_{c2}(x,0)$ with $x$.

Electronic correlations in the iron pnictides

In correlated metals derived from Mott insulators, the motion of an electron is impeded by Coulomb repulsion due to other electrons. This phenomenon causes a substantial reduction in the electron's kinetic energy leading to remarkable experimental manifestations in optical spectroscopy. The high-Tc superconducting cuprates are perhaps the most studied examples of such correlated metals. The occurrence of high-Tc superconductivity in the iron pnictides puts a spotlight on the relevance of correlation effects in these materials. Here we present an infrared and optical study on single crystals of the iron pnictide superconductor LaFePO. We find clear evidence of electronic correlations in metallic LaFePO with the kinetic energy of the electrons reduced to half of that predicted by band theory of nearly free electrons. Hallmarks of strong electronic many-body effects reported here are important because the iron pnictides expose a new pathway towards a correlated electron state that does not explicitly involve the Mott transition.

Superconductivity in LnFePO (Ln = La, Pr, and Nd) single crystals

Single crystals of the compounds LaFePO, PrFePO, and NdFePO have been prepared by means of a flux growth technique and studied by electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. We have found that PrFePO and NdFePO display superconductivity with values of the superconducting critical temperature T_c of 3.2 K and 3.1 K, respectively. The effect of annealing on the properties of LaFePO, PrFePO, and NdFePO is also reported. The LnFePO (Ln = lanthanide) compounds are isostructural with the LnFeAsO_{1-x}F_x compounds that become superconducting with T_c values as high as 55 K for Ln = Sm. A systematic comparison of the occurrence of superconductivity in the series LnFePO and LnFeAsO_{1-x}F_x points to a possible difference in the origin of the superconductivity in these two series of compounds.

The filled skutterudite CeOs$_{4}$As$_{12}$: a hybridization gap semiconductor

X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat, and thermoelectric power measurements are presented for single crystals of the new filled skutterudite compound {\CeOsAs}, which reveal phenomena that are associated with f - electron - conduction electron hybridization. Valence fluctuations or Kondo behavior dominates the physics down to $T$ $\sim$ 135 K. The correlated electron behavior is manifested at low temperatures as a hybridization gap insulating state. The small energy gap $Δ$$_1$/k$_B$ $\sim$ 73 K, taken from fits to electrical resistivity data, correlates with the evolution of a weakly magnetic or nonmagnetic ground state, which is evident in the magnetization data below a coherence temperature $T$$_{coh}$ $\sim$ 45 K. Additionally, the low temperature electronic specific heat coefficient is small, $γ$ $\sim$ 19 mJ/mol K$^2$. Some results for the nonmagnetic analogue compound {\LaOsAs} are also presented for comparison purposes.

Charge dynamics in the normal state of the iron oxypnictide superconductor LaFePO

We present the first infrared and optical study in the normal state of ab-plane oriented single crystals of the iron-oxypnictide superconductor LaFePO. We find that this material is a low carrier density metal with a moderate level of correlations and exhibits signatures of electron-boson coupling. The data is consistent with the presence of coherent quasiparticles in LaFePO.

Effect of pressure on the superconducting critical temperature of La[O_{0.89}F_{0.11}]FeAs and Ce[O_{0.88}F_{0.12}]FeAs

We have performed several high-pressure resistivity experiments on the recently discovered superconductors La[O_{0.89}F_{0.11}]FeAs and Ce[O_{0.88}F_{0.12}]FeAs. At ambient pressure, these materials have superconducting onset temperatures T_c of 28 K and 44 K, respectively. While the T_c of La[O_{0.89}F_{0.11}]FeAs goes through a maximum between 10-68 kbar, in qualitative agreement with a recent report by Takahashi et al., the T_c of Ce[O_{0.88}F_{0.12}]FeAs decreases monotonically over the measured pressure range. At 265 kbar, the T_c of the cerium-based compound has been suppressed below 1.1 K.

Superconductivity in single crystals of LaFePO

Single crystals of the compound LaFePO were prepared using a flux growth technique at high temperatures. Electrical resistivity measurements reveal metallic behavior and a resistive transition to the superconducting state at a critical temperature T_c ~ 6.6 K. Magnetization measurements also show the onset of superconductivity near 6 K. In contrast, specific heat measurements manifest no discontinuity at T_c. These results lend support to the conclusion that the superconductivity is associated with oxygen vacancies that alter the carrier concentration in a small fraction of the sample, although superconductivity characterized by an unusually small gap value can not be ruled-out. Under applied magnetic fields, T_c is suppressed anisotropically for fields perpendicular and parallel to the ab-plane, suggesting that the crystalline anisotropy strongly influences the superconducting state. Preliminary high-pressure measurements show that T_c passes through a maximum of nearly 14 K at ~ 110 kbar, demonstrating that significantly higher T_c values may be achieved in the phosphorus-based oxypnictides.

Non-Fermi liquid behavior in a fluctuating valence system, the filled skutterudite compound CeRu_{4}As_{12}

Electrical resistivity $ρ$, specific heat C, and magnetic susceptibility $χ$ measurements made on the filled skutterudite CeRu_4As_{12} reveal non-Fermi liquid (NFL) T - dependences at low T, i.e., $ρ$(T) $\sim$ T^{1.4} and weak power law or logarithmic divergences in C(T)/T and $χ$(T). Measurements also show that the T - dependence of the thermoelectric power S(T) deviates from that seen in other Ce systems. The NFL behavior appears to be associated with fluctuations of the Ce valence between 3^+ and 4^+ rather than a typical Kondo lattice scenario that would be appropriate for an integral Ce valence of 3^+.
