Von Neumann's Quantization of General Relativity

Von Neumann's procedure is applied for quantization of General Relativity. We quantize the initial data of dynamical variables at the Planck epoch, where the Hubble parameter coincides with the Planck mass. These initial data are defined via the Fock simplex in the tangent Minkowskian space-time and the Dirac conformal interval. The Einstein cosmological principle is applied for the average of the spatial metric determinant logarithm over the spatial volume of the visible Universe. We derive the splitting of the general coordinate transformations into the diffeomorphisms (as the object of the second Nöther theorem) and the initial data transformations (as objects of the first Nöther theorem). Following von Neumann, we suppose that the vacuum state is a quantum ensemble. The vacuum state is degenerated with respect to quantum numbers of non-vacuum states with the distribution function that yields the Casimir effect in gravidynamics in analogy to the one in electrodynamics. The generation functional of the perturbation theory in gravidynamics is given as a solution of the quantum energy constraint. We discuss the region of applicability of gravidynamics and its possible predictions for explanation of the modern observational and experimental data.

Cooperative phenomenon in a rippled graphene: Chiral spin guide

We analyze spin scattering in ballistic transport of electrons through a ripple at a normal incidence of an electron flow. The model of a ripple consists of a curved graphene surface in the form of an arc of a circle connected from the left-hand and right-hand sides to two flat graphene sheets. At certain conditions the curvature induced spin-orbit coupling creates a transparent window for incoming electrons with one spin polarization simultaneously with a backscattering of those with opposite polarization. This window is equally likely transparent for electrons with spin up and spin down that move in opposite directions. The spin filtering effect being small in one ripple becomes prominent with the increase of N consequently connected ripples that create a graphene sheet of the sinusoidal type. We present the analytical expressions for spin up (down) transmission probabilities as a function of N connected ripples.

Magnetic alteration of entanglement in two-electron quantum dots

Quantum entanglement is analyzed thoroughly in the case of the ground and lowest states of two-electron axially symmetric quantum dots under a perpendicular magnetic field. The individual-particle and the center-of-mass representations are used to study the entanglement variation at the transition from interacting to noninteracting particle regimes. The mechanism of symmetry breaking due to the interaction, that results in the states with symmetries related to the later representation only, being entangled even at the vanishing interaction, is discussed. The analytical expression for the entanglement measure based on the linear entropy is derived in the limit of noninteracting electrons. It reproduces remarkably well the numerical results for the lowest states with the magnetic quantum number M>2 in the interacting regime. It is found that the entanglement of the ground state is a discontinuous function of the field strength. A method to estimate the entanglement of the ground state, characterized by the quantum number M, with the aid of the magnetic field dependence of the addition energy is proposed.

Thomson rings in a disk

We discuss the basic principles of a self-organization of a finite number of charged particles interacting via the 1/r Coulomb potential in a disk geometry. Our approach is based on the cyclic symmetry and periodicity of the Coulomb interaction between particles located on several rings. As a result, a system of equations is derived, which allows us readily to determine with a high accuracy the equilibrium configurations of a few hundreds charged particles. For $n\gtrsim 200$ we predict the formation of a hexagonal core and valence circular rings for the centered configurations.

Spontaneous radiatively induced breaking of conformal invariance in the Standard Model

A mechanism of radiatively induced breaking of the conformal symmetry in the Standard Model is suggested. The system of one scalar (Higgs) and one fermion (top-quark) fields with Yukawa and $ϕ^4$ interactions is considered. The infrared instability of the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential for this system leads to the appearance of a finite renormalization scale and thus to breaking of the conformal symmetry. Finite condensates of both scalar and spinor fields appear. It is shown that the top quark condensate can supersede the tachyon mass of the Higgs field. The Higgs boson is treated as an elementary scalar and the standard mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking remains unchanged. The difference from the Standard Model appears in the value of the Higgs boson self-coupling constant.

Spin-orbit effects in armchair carbon nanotubes: analytical results

Energy spectra and transport properties of armchair nanotubes with curvature induced spin-orbit interaction are investigated thoroughly. The spin-orbit interaction consists of two terms: the first one preserves the spin symmetry in rotating frame, while the second one breaks it. It is found that the both terms are equally important: i)at scattering on the potential step which mimics a long-range potential in the nanotubes; ii)at transport via nanotube quantum dots. It is shown that an armchair nanotube with the first spin-orbit term works as an ideal spin-filter, while the second term produces a parasitic inductance.

Geometrical crossover in two-body systems in a magnetic field

An algebraic approach is formulated in the harmonic approximation to describe a dynamics of two-fermion systems, confined in three-dimensional axially symmetric parabolic potential, in an external magnetic field. The fermion interaction is considered in the form U_(M)(r)= alpha_(M)r^{-M} (alpha_(M)>0, M>0). The formalism of a semi-simple Lie group is applied to analyse symmetries of the considered system. Explicit algebraic expressions are derived in terms of system's parameters and the magnetic field strength to trace the evolution of the equilibrium shape. It is predicted that the interplay of classical and quantum correlations may lead to a quantum shape transition from a lateral to a vertical localization of fermions in the confined system. The analytical results demonstrate a good agreement with numerical results for two-electron quantum dots in the magnetic field, when classical correlations dominate in the dynamics.

Effects of symmetry breaking in finite quantum systems

The review considers the peculiarities of symmetry breaking and symmetry transformations and the related physical effects in finite quantum systems. Some types of symmetry in finite systems can be broken only asymptotically. However, with a sufficiently large number of particles, crossover transitions become sharp, so that symmetry breaking happens similarly to that in macroscopic systems. This concerns, in particular, global gauge symmetry breaking, related to Bose-Einstein condensation and superconductivity, or isotropy breaking, related to the generation of quantum vortices, and the stratification in multicomponent mixtures. A special type of symmetry transformation, characteristic only for finite systems, is the change of shape symmetry. These phenomena are illustrated by the examples of several typical mesoscopic systems, such as trapped atoms, quantum dots, atomic nuclei, and metallic grains. The specific features of the review are: (i) the emphasis on the peculiarities of the symmetry breaking in finite mesoscopic systems; (ii) the analysis of common properties of physically different finite quantum systems; (iii) the manifestations of symmetry breaking in the spectra of collective excitations in finite quantum systems. The analysis of these features allows for the better understanding of the intimate relation between the type of symmetry and other physical properties of quantum systems. This also makes it possible to predict new effects by employing the analogies between finite quantum systems of different physical nature.

A geometrical crossover in excited states of two-electron quantum dots in a magnetic field

We use the entanglement measure to study the evolution of quantum correlations in two-electron axially-symmetric parabolic quantum dots under a perpendicular magnetic field. We found that the entanglement indicates on the shape transition in the density distribution of two electrons in the lowest state with zero angular momentum projection at the specific value of the applied magnetic field.

Condensate Mechanism of Conformal Symmetry Breaking and the Higgs Boson

A mechanism of spontaneous conformal symmetry breaking based on field condensates in the Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions is suggested. It is shown that an existence of the top quark condensate can supersede the tachyon mass term in the Higgs potential in the standard mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking. Considering the ratio of a field condensate to the corresponding mass power (depending on quantum statistics) for various fields as a conformal invariant, we obtain the Higgs boson mass to be about $130\pm 15$ GeV.

Conformal and Affine Hamiltonian Dynamics of General Relativity

The Hamiltonian approach to the General Relativity is formulated as a joint nonlinear realization of conformal and affine symmetries by means of the Dirac scalar dilaton and the Maurer-Cartan forms. The dominance of the Casimir vacuum energy of physical fields provides a good description of the type Ia supernova luminosity distance--redshift relation. Introducing the uncertainty principle at the Planck's epoch within our model, we obtain the hierarchy of the Universe energy scales, which is supported by the observational data. We found that the invariance of the Maurer-Cartan forms with respect to the general coordinate transformation yields a single-component strong gravitational waves. The Hamiltonian dynamics of the model describes the effect of an intensive vacuum creation of gravitons and the minimal coupling scalar (Higgs) bosons in the Early Universe.

Narrow optical filtering with plasmonic nanoshells

Narrow optical band pass filters are widely used in systems with optical processing of information, color displays development and optical computers. We show that such ultra filters can be created by means of nanoparticles which consist of a dielectric sphere and a metallic shell. The components can be adjusted such that there is a remarkable transparency at the desired wavelength range, while a strong absorption takes place outside of this region.

Quantum non-equilibrium approach for fast electron transport in open systems: photosynthetic reaction centers

Creation of electron or exciton by external fields in a system with initially statistically independent unrelaxed vibrational modes leads to an initial condition term. The contribution of this term in the time convolution generalized master equation approach is studied in second order of the perturbation theory in the path integral formalism. The developed approach, applied for analysis of dynamics in the photosynthetic reaction center, exhibits the key role of the initial condition terms at the primary stage of electron transfer.

Spectral Singularities and Zero Energy Bound States

Single particle scattering around zero energy is re-analysed in view of recent experiments with ultra-cold atoms, nano-structures and nuclei far from the stability valley. For non-zero orbital angular momentum the low energy scattering cross section exhibits dramatic changes depending on the occurrence of either a near resonance or a bound state or the situation in between, that is a bound state at zero energy. Such state is singular in that it has an infinite scattering length, behaves for the eigenvalues but not for the eigenfunctions as an exceptional point and has no pole in the scattering function. These results should be observable whenever the interaction or scattering length can be controlled.

Conformal Hamiltonian Dynamics of General Relativity

The General Relativity formulated with the aid of the spin connection coefficients is considered in the finite space geometry of similarity with the Dirac scalar dilaton. We show that the redshift evolution of the General Relativity describes the vacuum creation of the matter in the empty Universe at the electroweak epoch and the dilaton vacuum energy plays a role of the dark energy.

Resonance scattering and singularities of the scattering function

Recent studies of transport phenomena with complex potentials are explained by generic square root singularities of spectrum and eigenfunctions of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians. Using a two channel problem we demonstrate that such singularities produce a significant effect upon the pole behaviour of the scattering matrix, and more significantly upon the associated residues. This mechanism explains why by proper choice of the system parameters the resonance cross section is increased drastically in one channel and suppressed in the other channel.

Quantum phase transitions in rotating nuclei

We extend the classical Landau theory for rotating nuclei and show that the backbending in 162Yb, that comes about as a result of the two-quasiparticle alignment, is identified with the second order phase transition. We found that the backbending in 156Dy, caused by the instability of $γ$-vibrations in the rotating frame, corresponds to the first order phase transition.
