Analysis of nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies and Random Matrix Theory

We propose a novel statistical approach to the analysis of experimental data obtained in nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies which borrows from methods developed within the context of Random Matrix Theory. It is applied to the detection of correlations in momentum distributions of emitted particles. We find good agreement between the results obtained in this way and a standard analysis based on the method of effective mass spectra and two-pair correlation function often used in high energy physics. The method introduced here is free from unwanted background contributions.

Entanglement control in coupled two-mode boson systems

A two-mode boson model, widely used for the physics of fast rotating nuclei and Bose-Einstein condensates, is studied in the context of entanglement control. We derive an analytical expression for the entanglement between the fields in this model as a function of time. We found that depending on the interaction strengths between boson modes and the nature of the initial boson states the dynamical evolution of the entanglement and the squeezing can occur independently.

Spin control in semiconductor quantum wires

We show that spin-flip rotation in a semiconductor quantum wire, caused by the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions (both of arbitrary strengths), can be suppressed by dint of an in-plane magnetic field. We found a new type of symmetry, which arises at a particular set of intensity and orientation of the magnetic field and explains this suppression. Based on our findings, we propose a transport experiment to measure the strengths of the Rashba and the Dresselhaus interactions.

Dynamical screening of the Coulomb interaction for two confined electrons in a magnetic field

We show that a difference in time scales of vertical and lateral dynamics permits one to analyze the problem of interacting electrons confined in an axially symmetric three-dimensional potential with a lateral oscillator confinement by means of the effective two-dimensional Hamiltonian with a screened Coulomb interaction. Using an adiabatic approximation based on action-angle variables, we present solutions for the effective charge of the Coulomb interaction (screening) for a vertical confinement potential simulated by parabolic, square, and triangular wells. While for the parabolic potential the solution for the effective charge is given in a closed anlytical form, for the other cases similar solutions can be easily calculated numerically.

Reflection symmetry instability at high spins in 162,164Yb

A shape evolution of 162,164Yb in yrast states is traced using the self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock calculations. We found that nonaxial octupole deformations (in particular, Y_{31} term) become favorable at large rotational frequencies (> 0.4 MeV) in 162Yb, while in 164Yb a nonaxial quadrupole shape is dominant at fast rotation. The cranked Nilsson model and random phase approximation are used to understand the dynamics of octupole correlations in both nuclei. We demonstrate that the disappearance of one of the octupole vibrational modes in the rotating frame gives rise to the nonaxial octupole deformations in 162Yb, while the octupole modes are nonzero in 164Yb.

Finite-thickness effects in ground-state transitions of two-electron quantum dots

Using the exactly solvable excitation spectrum of two-electron quantum dots with parabolic potential, we show that the inclusion of the vertical extension of the quantum dot provides a consistent description of the experimental findings of Nishi et al. [Phys.Rev.B75, 121301(R) (2007)]. We found that the second singlet-triplet transition in the ground state is a vanishing function of the lateral confinement in the three-dimensional case, while it always persists in the two-dimensional case. We show that a slight decrease of the lateral confinement leads to a formation of the Wigner molecule at low magnetic fields.

Wobbling excitations at high spins in A~160

We found that in 156Dy and 162Yb the lowest odd spin gamma-vibrational states transform to the wobbling excitations after the backbending, associated with the transition from axially-symmetric to nonaxial shapes. The analysis of quadrupole electric transitions determines uniquely the sign of the gamma-deformation in both nuclei after the transition point.

Instabilities, nonhermiticity and exceptional points in the cranking model

A cranking harmonic oscillator model, widely used for the physics of fast rotating nuclei and Bose-Einstein condensates, is re-investigated in the context of PT-symmetry. The instability points of the model are identified as exceptional points. It is argued that - even though the Hamiltonian appears hermitian at first glance - it actually is not hermitian within the region of instability.

Spectral spacing correlations of nucleus-nucleus collisions at high energies

Non-linear magneto-transport through small quantum dots at strong intra-dot correlations

Nonlinear transport through a quantum dot is studied in the limit of weak and strong intra-dot Coulomb interaction. For the latter regime the nonequilibrium self-consistent mean field equations for energies and spectral weights of one-electron transitions are formulated. The increase of the bias-voltage window leads to a strong deviation from Gibbs statistics: the populations of states involved into a tunnelling are equalizing in this limit even at low temperature. For a symmetric coupling of a quantum dot to two leads we provide simple analytical relations between heights of the current steps and degeneracy of a spectrum in a two-dimensional parabolic dot in a perpendicular magnetic field in the both regimes.

Microscopic analysis of shape-phase transitions in even-even N~90 rotating nuclei

We study in cranked Nilsson plus random phase approximation shape transitions in fast rotating nuclei undergoing backbending, more specifically 156Dy and 162Yb. We found that a backbending in 156Dy is correlated with the disappearance of the collective, positive signature gamma-vibrational mode in the rotating frame, and, a shape transition (from axial to nonaxial) is accompanied with a large acquiring of the gamma-deformation. We show that such a shape transition can be considered as a phase transition of the first order. In 162Yb the quasiparticle alignment dominates in the backbending and the shape transition (from axial to nonaxial) is accompanied with a smooth transition from zero to nonzero values of the gamma-deformation. We extend the classical Landau theory for rotating nuclei and show that the backbending in 162Yb is identified with the second order phase transition. A description of spectral and decay properties of the yrast states and low-lying excitations demonstrates a good agreement between our results and experimental data.

Random Matrix Theory and Analysis of Nucleus-Nucleus Collision at High Energies

We propose a novel method for analysis of experimental data obtained at relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. The method, based on the ideas of Random Matrix Theory, is applied to detect systematic errors that occur at measurements of momentum distributions of emitted particles. The unfolded momentum distribution is well described by the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble of random matrices, when the uncertainty in the momentum distribution is maximal. The method is free from unwanted background contributions.

Backbending and $Gamma$-Vibrations

We propose that the backbending phenomenon can be explained as a result of the disappearance of collective $gamma$-vibrational mode in the rotating frame. Using a cranking+random phase approximation approach for the modified Nilsson potential + monopole pairing forces, we show that this mechanism is responsible for the backbending in $^{156}$Dy, $^{158}$Er and obtain a good agreement between theoretical and experimental results.

Microscopic study of collective excitations in rotating nuclei

We have carried out a unified microscopic study of electric monopole, quadrupole and magnetic dipole excitations in fast rotating nuclei undergoing backbending, with special attention at the magnetic excitations. We found, among other results, that the strength of the orbital magnetic dipole excitations (scissors mode) gets enhanced by more than a factor four at high rotational frequency, above the backbending region. We provide a physical explanation for such an enhancement.

Quadrupole correlations and inertial properties of rotating nuclei

The contribution of quantum shape fluctuations to inertial properties of rotating nuclei has been analyzed for QQ-nuclear interaction using the random phase approximation (RPA). The different recipes to treat the cranking mean field plus RPA problem are considered. The effects of the dN=2 quadrupole matrix elements and the role of the volume conservation condition are discussed.

Hidden symmetries of two-electron quantum dots in a magnetic field

Using a classical and quantum mechanical analysis, we show that the magnetic field gives rise to dynamical symmetries of a three-dimensional axially symmetric two-electron quantum dot with a parabolic confinement. These symmetries manifest themselves as near-degeneracies in the quantum spectrum at specific values of the magnetic field and are robust at any strength of the electron-electron interaction.

Shot noise and transport in small quantum cavities with large openings

We present a dynamical analysis of the transport through small quantum cavities with large openings. The systematic suppression of shot noise is used to distinguish direct, deterministic from indirect, indeterministic transport processes. The analysis is based on quantum mechanical calculations of $S$ matrices and their poles for quantum billiards with convex boundaries of different shape and two open channels in each of the two attached leads. Direct processes are supported when special states couple strongly to the leads, and can result in deterministic transport as signified by a striking system-specific suppression of shot noise.

Self-Consistent Harmonic Oscillator Model and Tilted Rotation

The three dimensional harmonic oscillator model including a cranking term is used for an energy variational calculation. Energy minima are found under variation of the three oscillator frequencies determining the shape of the system for given values of the three components of the rotational vector which determines the orientation of the angular momentum in the intrinsic frame. Tilted rotations are established by numerical means for triaxial nuclei. The onset of tilted rotations is related to an instability of the mean field as verified by the random phase approximation. Analytic expressions are derived for the critical rotational frequencies associated with the mean field instability.
