Disorder, inhomogeneity and spin dynamics in f-electron non-Fermi liquid systems

Muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) experiments have yielded evidence that structural disorder is an important factor in many f-electron-based non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) systems. Disorder-driven mechanisms for NFL behaviour are suggested by the observed broad and strongly temperature-dependent $μ$SR (and NMR) linewidths in several NFL compounds and alloys. Local disorder-driven theories (Kondo disorder, Griffiths-McCoy singularity) are, however, not capable of describing the time-field scaling seen in muon spin relaxation experiments, which suggest cooperative and critical spin fluctuations rather than a distribution of local fluctuation rates. A strong empirical correlation is established between electronic disorder and slow spin fluctuations in NFL materials

The role of the lattice in the $γ\to α$ phase transition of Ce: a high pressure neutron and x-ray diffraction study

The temperature and pressure dependence of the thermal displacements and lattice parameters were obtained across the $γ\to α$ phase transition of Ce using high-pressure, high-resolution neutron and synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. The estimated vibrational entropy change per atom in the $γ\to α$ phase transition, $ΔS^{γ- α}_{\rm vib} \approx (0.75 \pm 0.15)$k$_{\rm B}$, is about half of the total entropy change. The bulk modulus follows a power-law pressure dependence which is well described using the framework of electron-phonon coupling. These results clearly demonstrate the importance of lattice vibrations, in addition to the spin and charge degrees of freedom, for a complete description of the $γ\to α$ phase transition in elemental Ce.

Magnetism and superconductivity in CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5 heavy fermion materials

We report on zero-field muon spin relaxation studies of cerium based heavy-fermion materials CeRh_{1-x}Ir_xIn_5. In the superconducting x=0.75 and 1 compositions muon spin relaxation functions were found to be temperature independent across T_c; no evidence for the presence of electronic magnetic moments was observed. The x=0.5 material is antiferromagnetic below T_N=3.75 K and superconducting below T_c=0.8 K. Muon spin realxation spectra show the gradual onset of damped coherent oscillations characteristic of magnetic order below T_N. At 1.65 K the total oscillating amplitude accounts for at least 85% of the sample volume. No change in muon precession frequency or amplitude is detected on cooling below T_c, indicating the microscopic coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in this material.

Lattice dynamics and correlated atomic motion from the atomic pair distribution function

The mean-square relative displacements (MSRD) of atomic pair motions in crystals are studied as a function of pair distance and temperature using the atomic pair distribution function (PDF). The effects of the lattice vibrations on the PDF peak widths are modelled using both a multi-parameter Born von-Karman (BvK) force model and a single-parameter Debye model. These results are compared to experimentally determined PDFs. We find that the near-neighbor atomic motions are strongly correlated, and that the extent of this correlation depends both on the interatomic interactions and crystal structure. These results suggest that proper account of the lattice vibrational effects on the PDF peak width is important in extracting information on static disorder in a disordered system such as an alloy. Good agreement is obtained between the BvK model calculations of PDF peak widths and the experimentally determined peak widths. The Debye model successfully explains the average, though not detailed, natures of the MSRD of atomic pair motion with just one parameter. Also the temperature dependence of the Debye model largely agrees with the BvK model predictions. Therefore, the Debye model provides a simple description of the effects of lattice vibrations on the PDF peak widths.

Limits on phonon information extracted from neutron pair-density functions

We explore the possibility of extracting information about lattice dynamics in simple crystal structures from the neutron pair-density function (PDF) through inverse data analysis. Contrary to the claims by Dimitrov, Louca, and Roeder [Phys.Rev. B 60, 6204 (1999)], and in agreement with recent work by Reichardt and Pintschovius [Phys.Rev. B 63, 174302 (2001)], we find that the PDF alone is not sufficient for constructing accurate phonon dispersions in the entire Brillouin zone in systems with complex lattice dynamics. However, our numerical simulations show that for monatomic fcc and bcc crystal structures it is, in principle, possible to obtain phonon moments of complex metals as well as phonon frequencies of simple metals within a few percent accuracy.

muSR linewidth and isotropic pairing in superconducting PrOs4Sb12

Transverse-field muon spin rotation measurements in the vortex-lattice mixed state of the heavy-fermion (HF) superconductor PrOs4Sb12 yield a temperature dependence of the penetration depth indicative of an isotropic or nearly isotropic energy gap. This is not seen to date in any other HF superconductor and is a signature of isotropic pairing symmetry, possibly related to a novel nonmagnetic "quadrupolar Kondo" HF mechanism in PrOs4Sb12. The T = 0 relaxation rate σ_s(0) = 0.91(1) μs^-1 yields an estimated penetration depth λ(0) = 3440(20) Å, which is considerably shorter than in other HF superconductors.

muSR and NMR in f-electron non-Fermi liquid materials

Magnetic resonance (muSR and NMR) studies of f-electron non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) materials give clear evidence that structural disorder is a major factor in NFL behavior. Longitudinal-field muSR relaxation measurements at low fields reveal a wide distribution of muon relaxation rates and divergences in the frequency dependence of spin correlation functions in the NFL systems UCu_{5-x}Pd_x and CePtSi_{1-x}Ge_x. These divergences seem to be due to slow dynamics associated with quantum spin-glass behavior, rather than quantum criticality as in a uniform system, for two reasons: the observed strong inhomogeneity in the muon relaxation rate, and the strong and frequency-dependent low-frequency fluctuation observed in U(Cu,Pd)_5 and CePt(Si,Ge). In the NFL materials CeCu_{5.9}Au_{0.1}, Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2, CeNi_2Ge_2, and YbRh_2Si_2 the low-frequency weight of the spin fluctuation spectrum is much weaker than in the disordered NFL systems.

muSR in Ce_{1-x}La_xAl_3: anisotropic Kondo effect?

Zero-field muSR experiments in the heavy-fermion alloys Ce_{1-x}La_xAl_3, x = 0 and 0.2, examine a recent proposal that the system exhibits a strong anisotropic Kondo effect. We resolve a damped oscillatory component for both La concentrations, indicative of disordered antiferromagnetism. For x = 0.2 the oscillation frequency decreases smoothly with increasing temperature, and vanishes at the specific heat anomaly temperature T* \approx 2.2 K. Our results are consistent with the view that T* is due to a magnetic transition rather than anisotropic Kondo behavior.

Spin dynamics in a structurally ordered non-Fermi liquid compound: YbRh_2Si_2

Muon spin relaxation (muSR) experiments have been carried out at low temperatures in the non-Fermi-liquid heavy-fermion compound YbRh_2Si_2. The longitudinal-field muSR relaxation function is exponential, indicative that the dynamic spin fluctuations are homogeneous. The relaxation rate 1/T_1 varies with applied field as H^{-y}, y = 1.0 \pm 0.1, which implies a scaling law of the form χ''(ω) \propto ω^{-y} f(ω/T), \lim_{x\to0} f(x) = x for the dynamic spin susceptibility.

Magnetization Distribution in the layered CMR Manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7 from Polarized Neutron Diffraction

In the ferromagnetic metallic state of the colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganite La1.2Sr1.8Mn2O7, the spin density distribution is essentially in agreement with the standard picture in which the unpaired electrons occupy the three t2g orbitals, dxy, dyz, and dxz. However we find a small spin density ~4% of the total Mn spin) on the apical O(2) oxygen atom at both 100 K and 220 K and we suggest that this is due to covalency effects. Surprisingly we find no evidence of spin on the other apical oxygen O(1) suggesting that the Mn eg electron distribution along the c-axis is highly anisotropic.

Correlations Between Charge Ordering and Local Magnetic Fields in Overdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

Zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) measurements were undertaken on under- and overdoped samples of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ to determine the origin of the weak static magnetism recently reported in this system. The temperature dependence of the muon spin relaxation rate in overdoped crystals displays an unusual behavior in the superconducting state. A comparison to the results of NQR and lattice structure experiments on highly doped samples provides compelling evidence for strong coupling of charge, spin and structural inhomogeneities.

Susceptibility Inhomogeneity and Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2

Magnetic susceptibility and muon spin rotation (\muSR) experiments have been carried out to study the effect of structural disorder on the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior of the heavy-fermion alloy Ce(Ru_{0.5}Rh_{0.5})_2Si_2. Analysis of the bulk susceptibility in the framework of disorder-driven Griffiths-phase and Kondo-disorder models for NFL behavior yields relatively narrow distributions of characteristic spin fluctuation energies, in agreement with \muSR linewidths that give the inhomogeneous spread in susceptibility. \muSR and NMR data both indicate that disorder explains the "nearly NFL" behavior observed above \sim2 K, but does not dominate the NFL physics found at low temperatures and low magnetic fields.

Slow Spin Dynamics in Non-Fermi-Liquid UCu_{5-x}Pd_x, x = 1.0 and 1.5

Low-temperature muon spin-lattice relaxation measurements in the non-Fermi-liquid heavy-fermion alloys UCu_{5-x}Pd_x, x = 1.0 and 1.5, indicate inhomogeneously distributed f-electron spin fluctuation rates, and exhibit a time-field scaling of the muon relaxation function indicative of long-lived spin correlations. In UCu_4Pd the scaling exponent γis small and temperature independent. In UCu_{3.5}Pd_{1.5} γvaries with temperature, increasing with decreasing temperature similar to spin-glass AgMn. This suggests that the spin-glass state found for x \gtrsim 2 in UCu_{5-x}Pd_x modifies the low-frequency spin dynamics in UCu_{3.5}Pd_{1.5}.

Time-Reversal-Symmetry Violation and Coexistence of Superconducting and Magnetic Order in CeRh(1-x)Ir(x)In(5)

This paper has been withdrawn by the authors. We performed additional zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements in the superconducting state of CeIrIn$_5$ and found that the spontaneous fields reported previously below $T_c$ are not present. Thus, there is no evidence for a time-reversal-symmetry-violating superconducting order parameter. These new zero-field measurements, as well as new measurements of the penetration depth in this system, will be reported elsewhere. Our zero-field measurements in CeIr$_{0.5}$Rh$_{0.5}$In$_5$, reporting coexistence of superconductivity and magnetic order, are still valid.

Glassy Spin Dynamics in Non-Fermi-Liquid UCu_{5-x}Pd_x, x = 1.0 and 1.5

Local f-electron spin dynamics in the non-Fermi-liquid heavy-fermion alloys UCu_{5-x}Pd_x, x = 1.0 and 1.5, have been studied using muon spin-lattice relaxation. The sample-averaged asymmetry function Gbar(t) indicates strongly inhomogeneous spin fluctuations, and exhibits the scaling Gbar(t,H) = Gbar(t/H^γ) expected from glassy dynamics. At 0.05 K γ(x=1.0) = 0.35 \pm 0.1, but γ(x=1.5) = 0.7 \pm 0.1. This is in contrast to inelastic neutron scattering results, which yield γ= 0.33 for both concentrations. There is no sign of static magnetism \gtrsim 10^{-3} μ_B/U ion in either material above 0.05 K. Our results strongy suggest that both alloys are quantum spin glasses.

Muon Spin Relaxation Study of (La, Ca)MnO3

We report predominantly zero field muon spin relaxation measurements in a series of Ca-doped LaMnO_3 compounds which includes the colossal magnetoresistive manganites. Our principal result is a systematic study of the spin-lattice relaxation rates 1/T_1 and magnetic order parameters in the series La_{1-x}Ca_xMnO_3, x = 0.0, 0.06, 0.18, 0.33, 0.67 and 1.0. In LaMnO_3 and CaMnO_3 we find very narrow critical regions near the Neel temperatures T_N and temperature independent 1/T_1 values above T_N. From the 1/T_1 in LaMnO_3 we derive an exchange integral J = 0.83 meV which is consistent with the mean field expression for T_N. All of the doped manganites except CaMnO_3 display anomalously slow, spatially inhomogeneous spin-lattice relaxation below their ordering temperatures. In the ferromagnetic (FM) insulating La_{0.82}Ca_{0.18}MnO_3 and ferromagnetic conducting La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3 systems we show that there exists a bi-modal distribution of \muSR rates λ_f and λ_s associated with relatively 'fast' and 'slow' Mn fluctuation rates, respectively. A physical picture is hypothesized for these FM phases in which the fast Mn rates are due to overdamped spin waves characteristic of a disordered FM, and the slower Mn relaxation rates derive from distinct, relatively insulating regions in the sample. Finally, likely muon sites are identified, and evidence for muon diffusion in these materials is discussed.

Positive Muon Knight Shift Measurements in U_{0.965}Th_{0.035}Be_{13} Single Crystals

Muon spin rotation measurements of the temperature dependence of the Knight shift in single crystals of U_{0.965}Th_{0.035}Be_{13} have been used to study the static spin susceptibility below the transition temperatures T_{c1} and T_{c2}. While an abrupt reduction of the susceptibility with decreasing temperature is observed below T_{c1}, the susceptibility does not change below T_{c2} and remains at a value below the normal-state susceptibility. In the normal state we find an anomalous anisotropic temperature dependence of the transferred hyperfine coupling between the muon spin and the U 5f-electrons.

Local lattice disorder in the geometrically-frustrated spin glass pyrochlore Y2Mo2O7

The geometrically-frustrated spin glass Y2Mo2O7 has been considered widely to be crystallographically ordered with a unique nearest neighbor magnetic exchange interaction, J. To test this assertion, we present x-ray-absorption fine-structure results for the Mo and Y K edges as a function of temperature and compare them to results from a well-ordered pyrochlore, Tl2Mn2O7. We find that the Mo-Mo pair distances are significantly disordered at approximately right angles to the Y-Mo pairs. These results strongly suggest that lattice disorder nucleates the spin-glass phase in this material.
