Local Magnetic Properties of a Monolayer of Mn12 Single Molecule Magnets

The magnetic properties of a monolayer of Mn12 single molecule magnets grafted onto a Si substrate have been investigated using depth-controlled $β$-detected nuclear magnetic resonance. A low energy beam of spin polarized radioactive 8Li was used to probe the local static magnetic field distribution near the Mn12 monolayer in the Si substrate. The resonance linewidth varies strongly as a function of implantation depth as a result of the magnetic dipolar fields generated by the Mn12 electronic magnetic moments. The temperature dependence of the linewidth indicates that the magnetic properties of the Mn12 moments in this low dimensional configuration differ from bulk Mn12.

Giant Vortices Below the Surface of NbSe$_2$ Detected Using Low Energy $β$-NMR

A low energy radioactive beam of polarized $^8$Li has been used to observe the vortex lattice near the surface of superconducting NbSe$_2$. The inhomogeneous magnetic field distribution associated with the vortex lattice was measured using depth-resolved $β$-detected NMR. Below $T_c$ one observes the characteristic lineshape for a triangular vortex lattice which depends on the magnetic penetration depth and vortex core radius. The size of the vortex core varies strongly with magnetic field. In particular in a low field of 10.8 mT the core radius is much larger than the coherence length. The possible origin of these giant vortices is discussed.

Beta-NMR of Isolated Lithium in Nearly Ferromagnetic Palladium

The temperature dependence of the frequency shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate of isolated, nonmagnetic Li-8 impurities implanted in a nearly ferromagnetic host (Pd) are measured by means of beta-detected nuclear magnetic resonance (b-NMR). The shift is negative, very large and increases monotonically with decreasing T in proportion to the bulk susceptibility of Pd for T > T*~ 100 K. Below T*, an additional shift occurs which we attribute to the response of Pd to the defect. The relaxation rate is much slower than expected for the large shift and is linear with T below T*, showing no sign of additional relaxation mechanisms associated with the defect.

Muon spin relaxation study of the magnetism in unilluminated Prussian Blue analogue photomagnets

We present longitudinal field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements in the unilluminated state of the photo-sensitive molecular magnetic Co-Fe Prussian blue analogues M$_{1-2x}$Co$_{1+x}$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$\cdot z$ H$_2$O, where M=K and Rb with $x=0.4$ and $\simeq 0.17$, respectively. These results are compared to those obtained in the $x=0.5$ stoichiometric limit, Co$_{1.5}$[Fe(CN)$_6$]$\cdot 6$ H$_2$O, which is not photo-sensitive. We find evidence for correlation between the range of magnetic ordering and the value of $x$ in the unilluminated state which can be explained using a site percolation model.

Near-Surface Structural Phase Transition of SrTiO$_3$ Studied with Zero-Field $β$-Detected Nuclear Spin Relaxation and Resonance

We demonstrate that zero-field $β$-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance and spin relaxation of low energy $^8$Li can be used as a sensitive local probe of structural phase transitions near a surface. We find that the transition near the surface of a SrTiO$_3$ single crystal occurs at $T_c \sim 150$ K, i.e., 45 K higher than $T^{bulk}_c$, and that the tetragonal domains formed below $T_c$ are randomly oriented.

$β$-Detected NMR of $^8$Li in the Normal State of 2H-NbSe$_2$

$β$-NMR of isolated $^8$Li has been investigated in the normal state of 2H-NbSe$_2$. In a high magnetic field of 3T a single resonance is observed with a Gaussian line width of 3.5 kHz. The line shape varies weakly as function of magnetic field and temperature but has a strong orientation dependence. The nuclear electric quadrupole splitting is unresolved implying that the electric field gradients are 10-100 times smaller than in other non-cubic crystals. The nuclear spin relaxation rate is also anomalously small but varies linearly with temperature as expected for Korringa relaxation in a metal. These results suggest that Li adopts an interstitial position between the weakly coupled NbSe$_2$ layers and away from the conduction band.

Shrinking Magnetic Vortices in V3Si Due to Delocalized Quasiparticle Core States: Confirmation of the Microscopic Theory for Interacting Vortices

We report muon spin rotation measurements on the conventional type-II superconductor V3Si that provide clear evidence for changes to the inner structure of a vortex due to the delocalization of bound quasiparticle core states. The experimental findings described here confirm a key prediction of recent microscopic theories describing interacting vortices. The effects of vortex-vortex interactions on the magnetic and electronic structure of the vortex state are of crucial importance to the interpretation of experiments on both conventional and exotic superconductors in an applied magnetic field.

Dynamic Kerr Effect and Spectral Weight Transfer in the Manganites

We perform pump-probe Kerr spectroscopy in the colossally magnetoresistive manganite Pr0.67Ca0.33MnO3. Kerr effects uncover surface magnetic dynamics undetected by established methods based on reflectivity and optical spectral weight transfer. Our findings indicate the connection between spin and charge dynamics in the manganites may be weaker than previously thought. Additionally, important differences between this system and conventional ferromagnetic metals manifest as long-lived, magneto-optical coupling transients, which may be generic to all manganites.

Superconductivity and Field-Induced Magnetism in Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ Single Crystals

We report muon-spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements on single crystals of the electron-doped high-T_c superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. In zero external magnetic field, superconductivity is found to coexist with Cu spins that are static on the muSR time scale. In an applied field, we observe a Knight shift that is primarily due to the magnetic moment induced on the Pr ions. Below the superconducting transition temperature T_c, an additional source of static magnetic order appears throughout the sample. This finding is consistent with antiferromagnetic ordering of the Cu spins in the presence of vortices. We also find that the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth in the vortex state resembles that of the hole-doped cuprates at temperatures above ~ 0.2 T_c.

Nonlocal Effects and Shrinkage of the Vortex Core Radius in YNi2B2C Probed by muSR

The magnetic field distribution in the vortex state of YNi2B2C has been probed by muon spin rotation (muSR). The analysis based on the London model with nonlocal corrections shows that the vortex lattice has changed from hexagonal to square with increasing magnetic field H. At low fields the vortex core radius, rho_v(H), decreases with increasing H much steeper than what is expected from the sqrt(H) behavior of the Sommerfeld constant gamma(H), strongly suggesting that the anomaly in gamma(H) primarily arises from the quasiparticle excitations outside the vortex cores.

Correlations Between Charge Ordering and Local Magnetic Fields in Overdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

Zero-field muon spin relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) measurements were undertaken on under- and overdoped samples of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ to determine the origin of the weak static magnetism recently reported in this system. The temperature dependence of the muon spin relaxation rate in overdoped crystals displays an unusual behavior in the superconducting state. A comparison to the results of NQR and lattice structure experiments on highly doped samples provides compelling evidence for strong coupling of charge, spin and structural inhomogeneities.

Evidence for Static Magnetism in the Vortex Cores of Ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$

Evidence for static alternating magnetic fields in the vortex cores of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ is reported. Muon spin rotation measurements of the internal magnetic field distribution of the vortex state of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ in applied fields of $H = 1$ T and $H = 4$ T reveal a feature in the high-field tail of the field distribution which is not present in optimally doped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.95}$ and which fits well to a model with static magnetic fields in the vortex cores. The magnitude of the fields is estimated to be 18(2) G and decreases above $T = 10$ K. We discuss possible origins of the additional vortex core magnetism within the context of existing theories.

Temperature Dependence of the Magnetic Penetration Depth in the Vortex State of the Pyrochlore Superconductor, Cd2Re2O7

We report transverse field and zero field muon spin rotation studies of the superconducting rhenium oxide pyrochlore, Cd2Re2O7. Transverse field measurements (H=0.007 T) show line broadening below Tc, which is characteristic of a vortex state, demonstrating conclusively the type-II nature of this superconductor. The penetration depth is seen to level off below about 400 mK (T/Tc~0.4), with a rather large value of lambda (T=0)~7500A. The temperature independent behavior below ~ 400 mK is consistent with a nodeless superconducting energy gap. Zero-field measurements indicate no static magnetic fields developing below the transition temperature.

Field Induced Reduction of the Low Temperature Superfluid Density in YBa2Cu3O6.95

A novel high magnetic field (8 T) spectrometer for muon spin rotation has been used to measure the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O6.95. At low H and low T, the penetration depth exhibits the characteristic linear T dependence associated with the energy gap of a d_x^2-y^2-wave superconductor. However, at higher fields the penetration depth is essentially temperature independent at low T. We discuss possible interpretations of this surprising new feature in the low-energy excitation spectrum.

Melting and Dimensionality of the Vortex Lattice in Underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.60

Muon spin rotation measurements of the magnetic field distribution in the vortex state of the oxygen deficient high-Tc superconductor YBa{2}Cu{3}O{6.60} reveal a vortex-lattice melting transition at much lower temperature than that in the fully oxygenated material. The transition is best described by a model in which adjacent layers of ``pancake'' vortices decouple in the liquid phase. Evidence is also found for a pinning-induced crossover from a solid 3D to quasi-2D vortex lattice, similar to that observed in the highly anisotropic superconductor Bi{2+x}Sr{2-x}CaCu{2}O{8+y}.

Expansion of the Vortex Cores in YBa2Cu3O6.95 at Low Magnetic Fields

Muon spin rotation spectroscopy has been used to measure the effective size of the vortex cores in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.95 as a function of temperature and magnetic field deep in the superconducting state. While the core size at H=2T is close to 20 angstroms and consistent with that measured by STM at 6T, we find a striking increase in the core size at lower magnetic fields, where it approaches an extraordinarily large value of about 100 angstroms. This suggests that the average value of the superconducting coherence length in cuprate superconductors may be larger than previously thought at low magnetic fields.

Muon-Spin Rotation Measurements of the Magnetic Field Dependence of the Vortex-Core Radius and Magnetic Penetration Depth in NbSe2

Muon-spin rotation spectroscopy has been used to measure the internal magnetic field distribution in NbSe2 for Hc1 << H < 0.25 Hc2. The deduced profiles of the supercurrent density indicate that the vortex-core radius in the bulk decreases sharply with increasing magnetic field. This effect, which is attributed to increased vortex-vortex interactions, does not agree with the dirty-limit microscopic theory. A simple phenomenological equation in which the core radius depends on the intervortex spacing is used to model this behaviour. In addition, we find for the first time that the in-plane magnetic penetration depth increases linearly with H in the vortex state of a conventional superconductor.

Muon spin rotation measurement of the fundamental length scales in the vortex state of YBa2Cu3O6.60

The internal field distribution in the vortex state of YBa2Cu3O6.60 is shown to be a sensitive measure of both the magnetic penetration depth and the vortex-core radius. The temperature dependence of the vortex core radius is found to be weaker than in the conventional superconductor NbSe2 and much weaker than theoretical predictions for an isolated vortex. The effective vortex-core radius decreases sharply with increasing H, whereas the penetration depth is found to be much stronger than in NbSe2.
