Numerical study of the effect of mass of the background gas on the lateral interactions of two plasma plumes at high pressure

The characteristic of the lateral interaction of two plasma plumes in $Ar$ background gas at high pressures was reported in recent publication [Yadav {\it et. al.}, J. Phys. D: Appl. Phys. {\bf 50}, 053421 (2017)]. Further we have investigated the interaction characteristics of plumes in $He$, $Ne$, $Ar$ and $Xe$ background gases to see the effect of mass on the interaction. The present work illustrate the applicability of the present model for theoretical understanding of dynamics, structure, density variation, shock wave formations and their interactions of two propagating plasma plumes in a wide range of ambient conditions. The formation of interaction region, geometrical shape and strength of the shock fronts and subsequent regular and Mach reflections in accordance with the nature and pressure of ambient gas are successfully captured in the simulations. The observed results are supported by the reported experimental observations under identical conditions.

Effect of magnetic field on the laterally colliding plasma plumes

An experimental investigation of laser produced colliding plasma of aluminium target in the presence of external magnetic field in vacuum is done. Characteristic parameters and line emission of plasma plume in the presence of magnetic field are compared with those for field free case. Axial expansion of the plasma is slowed down in the presence of magnetic field as compared to the field free case. Contrary to the field free case no sharp interaction zone is observed. Higher electron temperature and increased ionic line emission from singly as well as doubly ionized aluminium can be attributed to the Joule heating phenomenon.

Transport and tumbling of polymers in viscoelastic shear flow

Polymers in shear flow are ubiquitous and we study their motion in a viscoelastic fluid under shear. Employing dumbbells as representative, we find that the center of mass motion follows: $\langle x^2_c(t) \rangle \sim \dotγ^2 t^{α+2}, ~0< α<1$, generalizing the earlier result: $\langle x^2_c(t) \rangle \sim \dotγ^2t^3 ~(α= 1)$. Motion of the relative coordinate, on the other hand, is quite intriguing in that $\langle x^2_r(t) \rangle \sim t^β$ with $β= 2(1-α)$ for small $α$. This implies nonexistence of the steady state. We remedy this pathology by introducing a nonlinear spring with FENE-LJ interaction and study tumbling dynamics of the dumbbell. The overall effect of viscoelasticity is to slow down the dynamics in the experimentally observed ranges of the Weissenberg number. We numerically obtain the characteristic time of tumbling and show that small changes in $α$ result in large changes in tumbling times.

Study of diamagnetism in laser-produced plasma using B-dot probe

Time-varying diamagnetism in laser-produced plasma moving across the transverse magnetic field with different field strengths has been studied using fast imaging and magnetic probe. The emphasis of the present work is on the development of suitable B-dot probe and quantitative analysis of induced diamagnetic field in an expanding plasma plume. A Helmholtz coil associated with pulsed power system is used to produce uniform magnetic field of different strengths. Helmholtz coil allowed the plume imaging along the magnetic field lines, which gives the direct structural information of the induced diamagnetic cavity. A high frequency three-axis B-dot probe has been developed to measure the transient magnetic field. Different experimental approaches have been used to test the response, sensitivity and calibration of the developed probe. Findings indicate that plasma plume shows the perfect diamagnetic behaviour for the external field varying from 0.13 T to 0.57 T where the induced magnetic field almost completely displaced the external magnetic field.

Wasp -- Waisted loop and Spin frustration in Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ Pyrochlore

The Raman spectroscopy and AC and DC magnetization of Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have been investigated. In Raman Spectroscopy, the systematic shift in all phonon modes with Eu content in Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ confirms that Dy$^{3+}$ ion is substituted by Eu3+ ions. High concentration of Eu induces the dipolar exchange interactions and crystal-field interactions in Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Rich Eu content samples (x=1.8 and 1.9) show the existence of wasp-waisted hysteresis loop and that can be attributed to the coexistence of dipolar field and anisotropy exchange interaction. AC susceptibility shows two single ion spin freezing transitions corresponding to Dy$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ ions respectively in x = 1.5, 1.8, 1.9 samples.

Compositional analysis of laser produced plasma plume in front and back ablation geometries

Composition analysis of LiF-C thin film for neutral and ionic contributions in Front Ablation (FA) and Back Ablation (BA) geometries in vacuum and 2\times10-1 mbar argon has been done. Temporal evolution of ionic to neutral ratio and neutral abundance for both the geometries has been estimated. For neutral abundance, two approaches viz Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) analysis as well as integrated intensity ratio of Li I 670.1 nm and Li I 610.3 nm lines assuming LTE conditions are explored. The present attempt will be interesting from the view point of understanding the evolution of plasma composition in various geometries/configurations of laser ablation which has important implications in various applications e.g. pulsed laser deposition and laser cleaning.

Observation of planar Hall effect in Type-II Dirac semimetal PtTe$_{2}$

We report experimental observation of the Planar Hall effect (PHE) in a type-II Dirac semimetal PtTe$_2$. This unusual Hall effect is not expected in nonmagnetc materials such as PtTe$_2$, and has been observed previously mostly in magnetic semiconductors or metals. Remarkably, the PHE in PtTe$_2$ can be observed up to temperatures near room temperature which indicates the robustness of the effect. This is in contrast to the chiral anomaly induced negative longitudnal magnetoresistance (LMR), which can be observed only in the low temperature regime and is sensitive to extrinsic effects, such as current jetting and chemical inhomogeneities in crystals of high mobility. Planar Hall effect on the other hand is a purely intrinsic effect generated by the Berry curvature in Weyl semimetals. Additionally, the PHE is observed for PtTe$_2$ even though the Dirac node is $\approx 0.8$~eV away from the Fermi level. Thus our results strongly indicate that PHE can be used as a crucial transport diagnostic for topological character even for band structures with Dirac nodes slightly away from the Fermi energy.

A de Hass-van Alphen study of the Type-II Dirac semimetal candidates $A$Te$_2$ ($A =$ Pt, Pd)

We report on a magneto-transport and quantum oscillations study on high quality single crystals of the transition metal di-tellurides PtTe$_2$ and PdTe$_2$. The de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the magnetization measurements on PtTe$_2$ reveal a complicated, anisotropic band structure characterized by low effective masses and high mobilities for the carriers. Extracted transport parameters for PtTe$_2$ reveal a strong anisotropy which could be related to the tilted nature of Dirac cone. Using a Landau level fan diagram analysis we find at least one Fermi surface orbit with a Berry phase of $π$ consistent with Dirac electrons for both PtTe$_2$ and PdTe$_2$. The light effective mass and high mobility are also consistent with Dirac electrons in PtTe$_2$. Our results suggest that similar to PdTe$_2$, PtTe$_2$ might also be a three dimensional Dirac semimetal.

Effect of $α$-particle irradiation on a NdFeAs(O,F) thin film

The effect of $α$-particle irradiation on a NdFeAs(O,F) thin film has been investigated to determine how the introduction of defects affects basic superconducting properties, including the critical temperature $T_c$ and the upper critical field $H_{c2}$, and properties more of interest for applications, like the critical current density $J_c$ and the related pinning landscape. The irradiation-induced suppression of the film $T_c$ is significantly smaller than on a similarly damaged single crystal. Moreover $H_{c2}$ behaves differently, depending on the field orientation: for H//c the $H_{c2}$ slope monotonically increases with increasing disorder, whereas for H//ab it remains constant at low dose and it increases only when the sample is highly disordered. This suggests that a much higher damage level is necessary to drive the NdFeAs(O,F) thin film into the dirty limit. Despite the increase in the low temperature $H_{c2}$, the effects on the $J_c$(H//c) performances are moderate in the measured temperature and field ranges, with a shifting of the pinning force maximum from 4.5 T to 6 T after an irradiation of $2\times10^{15} cm^{-2}$. On the contrary, $J_c$(H//ab) is always suppressed. The analysis demonstrates that irradiation does introduce point defects acting as pinning centres proportionally to the irradiation fluence but also suppresses the effectiveness of c-axis correlated pinning present in the pristine sample. We estimate that significant performance improvements may be possible at high field or at temperatures below 10 K. The suppression of the $J_c$(H//ab) performance is not related to a decrease of the $J_c$ anisotropy as found in other superconductors. Instead it is due to the presence of point defects that decrease the efficiency of the ab-plane intrinsic pinning typical of materials with a layered structure.

Flocking in one dimension: effect of update rules

In this study the effect of parallel and random-sequential updates on the dynamical properties of flocks in one dimension is considered. It is found that the frequency of directional switching is increased for random-sequential updates as compared to a parallel update. The nature of disorder to order transition is also affected by the difference of updating mechanism: discontinuous for parallel and continuous for random-sequential updates.

Kramers problem for a dimer: effect of noise correlations

Kramers problem for a dimer in a bistable piecewise linear potential is studied in the presence of correlated noise processes. The distribution of first passage times from one minima to the basin of attraction of the other minima is found to have exponentially decaying tails with the parameter dependent on the amount of correlation and the coupling between the particles. Strong coupling limit of the problem is analyzed using adiabatic elimination, where it is found that the initial probability density relaxes towards stationary value on the same time scale as the mean escape time. The implications towards polymer dynamics in a potential are discussed.

Optimal interdependence enhances robustness of complex systems

While interdependent systems have usually been associated with increased fragility, we show that strengthening the interdependence between dynamical processes on different networks can make them more robust. By coupling the dynamics of networks that in isolation exhibit catastrophic collapse with extinction of nodal activity, we demonstrate system-wide persistence of activity for an optimal range of interdependence between the networks. This is related to the appearance of attractors of the global dynamics comprising disjoint sets ("islands") of stable activity.

Synchronization in an evolving network

In this work we study the dynamics of Kuramoto oscillators on a stochastically evolving network whose evolution is governed by the phases of the individual oscillators and degree distribution. Synchronization is achieved after a threshold connection density is reached. This cumulative effect of topology and dynamics has many real-world implications, where synchronization in a system emerges as a collective property of its components in a self-organizing manner. The synchronous state remains stable as long as the connection density remains above the threshold value, with additional links providing resilience against network fluctuations.

New Physics at the LHC. A Les Houches Report: Physics at TeV Colliders 2009 - New Physics Working Group

We present a collection of signatures for physics beyond the standard model that need to be explored at the LHC. First, are presented various tools developed to measure new particle masses in scenarios where all decays include an unobservable particle. Second, various aspects of supersymmetric models are discussed. Third, some signatures of models of strong electroweak symmetry are discussed. In the fourth part, a special attention is devoted to high mass resonances, as the ones appearing in models with warped extra dimensions. Finally, prospects for models with a hidden sector/valley are presented. Our report, which includes brief experimental and theoretical reviews as well as original results, summarizes the activities of the "New Physics" working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 8-26 June, 2009).

Investigation of phonon dynamics of perovskite multiferroic manganites: RMnO3 (R=Tb, Dy, Ho)

We have used a shell model to study the phonon dynamics of multiferroic manganites RMnO3 (R= Tb, Dy, Ho). The calculated phonon dynamical properties, crystal structure, Raman frequencies and specific heat are found to be in good agreement with the available experimental data. Besides, the phonon density of states, elastic constants and phonon dispersion curves along high symmetry directions (sigma, delta and lambda) have also been computed. A zone-center imaginary Au mode is revealed in these phonon dispersion curves, which indicates the occurrence of metastability of the perovskite phase. The Gibbs free energy values of orthorhombic phase, when compared with those of hexagonal phase, indicate the possibility of coexistence of these two phases of these multiferroic manganites under ambient conditions.

Suppression of the critical temperature of superconducting NdFeAs(OF) single crystals by Kondo-like defect sites induced by alpha-particle irradiation

We report a comprehensive investigation of the suppression of the critical temperature Tc of NdFeAs(OF) single crystal by alpha-particle irradiation. Our data indicate that irradiation defects produce both nonmagnetic and magnetic scattering, resulting in the Kondo-like excess resistance $Δρ(T)\propto ln T$ over 2 decades in temperatures above $T_c$. Despite high densities of irradiation defects, the dose at which $T_c$ is suppressed to zero is comparable to that for MgB2 but is well above the corresponding values for cuprates.

Constraining the MSSM with universal gaugino masses and implication for searches at the LHC

Using a Markov chain Monte Carlo approach, we find the allowed parameter space of a MSSM model with seven free parameters. In this model universality conditions at the GUT scale are imposed on the gaugino sector. We require in particular that the relic density of dark matter saturates the value extracted from cosmological measurements assuming a standard cosmological scenario. We characterize the parameter space of the model that satisfies experimental constraints and illustrate the complementarity of the LHC searches, B-physics observables and direct dark matter searches for further probing the parameter space of the model. We also explore the different decay chains expected for the coloured particles that would be produced at LHC.

Effect of oxygen incorporation on normal and superconducting properties of MgB2 films

Oxygen was systematically incorporated in MBE grown MgB2 films using in-situ post-growth anneals in an oxygen environment. Connectivity analysis in combination with measurements of the critical temperature and resistivity indicate that oxygen is distributed both within and between the grains. High values of critical current densities in field (~4x10^5 A/cm^2 at 8 T and 4.2 K), extrabolated critical fields (>45 T) and slopes of critical field versus temperature (1.4 T/K) are observed. Our results suggest that low growth temperatures (300oC) and oxygen doping (>0.65%) can produce MgB2 with high Jc values in field and Hc2 for high-field magnet applications.
