New Physics at the LHC: A Les Houches Report. Physics at Tev Colliders 2007 -- New Physics Working Group

We present a collection of signatures for physics beyond the standard model that need to be explored at the LHC. The signatures are organized according to the experimental objects that appear in the final state, and in particular the number of high pT leptons. Our report, which includes brief experimental and theoretical reviews as well as original results, summarizes the activities of the "New Physics'' working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 11-29 June, 2007).

MgB2 tunnel junctions with native or thermal oxide barriers

MgB2 tunnel junctions (MgB2/barrier/MgB2) were fabricated using a native oxide grown on the bottom MgB2 film as the tunnel barrier. Such barriers therefore survive the deposition of the second electrode at 300oC, even over junction areas of ~1 mm2. Studies of such junctions, and those of the type MgB2/native or thermal oxide/metal (Pb, Au, or Ag) show that tunnel barriers grown on MgB2 exhibit a wide range of barrier heights and widths.

The derivative of the topological susceptibility at zero momentum and an estimate of $η'$ mass in the chiral limit

The anomaly-anomaly correlator is studied using QCD sum rules. Using the matrix elements of anomaly between vacuum and pseudoscalars $π, eta$ and $η'$, the derivative of correlator $chi'(0)$ is evaluated and found to be $\approx 1.82 \times 10^{-3}$ GeV$^2$. Assuming that $χ'(0)$ has no significant dependence on quark masses, the mass of $η'$ in the chiral limit is found to be $\approx$723 MeV. The same calculation also yields for the singlet pseudoscalar decay constant in the chiral limit a value of $\approx 178$ MeV.

The role of polarized positrons and electrons in revealing fundamental interactions at the Linear Collider

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

Effect of damage by 2-MeV He ions and annealing on Hc2 in MgB2 thin films

The effect of damage induced by 2-MeV alpha particles, followed by annealing, on the critical temperature (Tc), resistivity, and upper critical field (Hc2), of three MgB2 films made by different deposition processes has been studied. Damage creates a linear decrease in Tc with residual resistivity, and produces maxima in both Hc2(0)-perpendicular and Hc2(0)-parallel. Below Tcs of about 25 K, Hc2(0) depends roughly linearly on Tc, while the anisotropy of Hc2(0) decreases as Tc decreases. Annealing the films reproduces the Tc vs. residual resistivity dependence but not the Hc2(0) values induced by damage.

The role of Cr substitution on the ferromagnetic properties of Ga1-xCrxN

Angular-dependent channeling Rutherford Backscattering Spectroscopy (c-RBS) has been used to quantify the fraction of Cr atoms on substitutional, interstitial, and random sites in epitaxial Ga1-xCrxN films grown by reactive molecular-beam epitaxy. The morphology of these films and correlation with their magnetic properties has been investigated. Films grown at temperatures below ~ 750oC have up to 90% of Cr occupying substitutional sites. Post-growth annealing at 825oC results in a systematic drop in the fraction of substitutional Cr as well as a fall off in the ferromagnetic signal. The roles of non-substitutional Cr in transferring charge from the Cr t2 band and segregation of substitutional Cr in the loss of magnetism are discussed. Overall, these results provide strong microscopic evidence that Cr-doped III-N systems are dilute magnetic semiconductors.

Effect of damage by 2-MeV He ions on the normal and superconducting properties of magnesium diboride

We have studied the effect of damage induced by 2-MeV alpha particles on the critical temperature, Tc, and resistivity of MgB2 thin films. This technique allows defects to be controllably introduced into MgB2 in small successive steps. Tc decreases linearly as the intragrain resistivity at 40 K increases, while the intergrain connectivity is not changed. Tc is ultimately reduced to less than 7 K and we see no evidence for a saturation of Tc at about 20 K, contrary to the predictions of the Tc of MgB2 in the dirty limit of interband scattering.

Observation of ferromagnetism above 900 K in Cr-GaN and Cr-AlN

We report the observation of ferromagnetism at over 900K in Cr-GaN and Cr-AlN thin films. The saturation magnetization moments in our best films of Cr-GaN and Cr-AlN at low temperatures are 0.42 and 0.6 u_B/Cr atom, respectively, indicating that 14% and 20%, of the Cr atoms, respectively, are magnetically active. While Cr-AlN is highly resistive, Cr-GaN exhibits thermally activated conduction that follows the exponential law expected for variable range hopping between localized states. Hall measurements on a Cr-GaN sample indicate a mobility of 0.06 cm^2/V.s, which falls in the range characteristic of hopping conduction, and a free carrier density (1.4E20/cm^3), which is similar in magnitude to the measured magnetically-active Cr concentration (4.9E19/cm^3). A large negative magnetoresistance is attributed to scattering from loose spins associated with non-ferromagnetic impurities. The results indicate that ferromagnetism in Cr-GaN and Cr-AlN can be attributed to the double exchange mechanism as a result of hopping between near-midgap substitutional Cr impurity bands.

High-field superconductivity in alloyed MgB2 thin films

We investigated the effect of alloying on the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ in 12 $MgB_2$ films, in which disorder was introduced by growth, carbon doping or He-ion irradiation, finding a significant $H_{c2}$ enhancement in C-alloyed films, and an anomalous upward curvature of $H_{c2}(T)$. Record high values of $H_{c2}^{\perp}(4.2) \simeq 35T$ and $H_{c2}\|(4.2) \simeq 51T$ were observed perpendicular and parallel to the ab plane, respectively. The temperature dependence of $H_{c2}(T)$ is described well by a theory of dirty two-gap superconductivity. Extrapolation of the experimental data to T=0 suggests that $H_{c2}\|(0)$ approaches the paramagnetic limit of $\sim 70T$.

Synthesis, characterization and modeling of high quality ferromagnetic Cr-doped AlN thin films

We report a theoretical and experimental investigation of Cr-doped AlN. Density functional calculations predict that the isolated Cr t2 defect level in AlN is 1/3 full, falls approximately at midgap, and broadens into an impurity band for concentrations over 5%. Substitutional Al1-xCrxN random alloys with 0.05 <= x <= 0.15 are predicted to have Curie temperatures over 600 K. Experimentally, we have characterized and optimized the molecular beam epitaxy thin film growth process, and observed room temperature ferromagnetism with a coercive field, Hc, of 120 Oersted. The measured magnetic susceptibility indicates that over 33% of the Cr is magnetically active at room temperature and 40% at low temperature.

Probing the CP of the Higgs at a $γγ$ collider using $γγ\to t \bar t \to lX$

We present results of an investigation to study CP violation in the Higgs sector in $t\bar t$ production at a $γγ$-collider. This is done in a model independent way in terms of six form-factors $\{\Re(S_γ), \Im(S_γ), \Re(P_γ), \Im(P_γ), S_t, P_t\}$ which parameterize the CP mixing in Higgs sector. The angular distribution of the decay lepton from $t/\bar t$ is shown to be independent of any CP violation in the $tbW$ vertex. Hence it can be used as a diagnostic of the CP mixing. We study how well one can probe different combinations of the form factors by measurements of the combined asymmetries that we construct, in the initial state lepton (photon) polarization and the final state lepton charge, using only circularly polarized photons. We show that the method can be sensitive to loop-induced CP violation in the Higgs sector in the MSSM.
