Muon spin rotation measurements on RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ under pressure

We report muon spin rotation and magnetization measurements on the magnetic superconductor RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 3.8 GPa. At ambient pressure, RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$ exhibits a superconducting transition at $T_{c} \approx$ 36.5 K and a magnetic transition at $T_{m} \approx$ 15 K below which the magnetic and the superconducting order coexist. With increasing pressure, $T_{c}$ decreases while $T_{m}$ and the ordered Eu magnetic moment increase. In contrast to iron-based superconductors with ordering Fe moments, the size of the ordered Eu moment is not proportional to $T_{m}$. The muon spin rotation signal is dominated by the magnetic response impeding the determination of the superconducting properties.

Coupled Magnetic and Superconducting Transitions in Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs Under Pressure

We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements on superconducting Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs under pressure. At ambient pressure, Sr$_{2}$VO$_{3}$FeAs undergoes an antiferromagnetic transition of the V moments at $T_{N}$ and becomes superconducting at $T_{c}<T_{N}$. As a function of pressure, $T_{N}$ initially decreases while $T_{c}$ increases. Surprisingly, once $T_{N}\approx T_{c}$ at 0.6~GPa, $T_{N}$ reverses its trend and increases together with $T_{c}$ suggesting that the static V magnetism is a prerequisite for superconductivity. We explain this cooperative coupling by a possible localization of the V 3$d$ states below the magnetic transition which enables the nesting of the Fermi surface necessary for superconductivity.

Linear Scaling of the Superfluid Density with the Critical Temperature in the Layered Superconductor 2H-NbSe_2

We report on high-pressure (p_max = 2.1 GPa) muon spin rotation experiments probing the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in the layered superconductor 2H-NbSe_2. Upon increasing the pressure, we observe a substantial increase of the superfluid density n_s, which we find to scale linearly with T_c. This linear scaling is considered a hallmark feature of unconventional superconductivity, especially in high-temperature cuprate superconductors. Our current results, along with our earlier findings on 1T'-MoTe_2 (Z. Guguchia et. al., Nature Communications 8, 1082 (2017)), demonstrate that this linear relation is also an intrinsic property of the superconductivity in transition metal dichalcogenides, whereas the ratio T_c/T_F is approximately a factor of 20 lower than the ratio observed in hole-doped cuprates. We, furthermore, find that the values of the superconducting gaps are insensitive to the suppression of the quasi-two-dimensional CDW state, indicating that the CDW ordering and the superconductivity in 2H-NbSe_2 are independent of each other.

Extended Magnetic Dome Induced by Low Pressures in Superconducting FeSe$_\mathrm{1\text{-}x}$S$_\mathrm{x}$

We report muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) and magnetization measurements under pressure on Fe$_{1+δ}$Se$_\mathrm{1\text{-}x}$S$_\mathrm{x}$ with x $\approx 0.11$.Above $p\approx0.6$ GPa we find microscopic coexistence of superconductivity with an extended dome of long range magnetic order that spans a pressure range between previously reported separated magnetic phases. The magnetism initially competes on an atomic scale with the coexisting superconductivity leading to a local maximum and minimum of the superconducting $T_\mathrm{c}(p)$. The maximum of $T_\mathrm{c}$ corresponds to the onset of magnetism while the minimum coincides with the pressure of strongest competition. A shift of the maximum of $T_\mathrm{c}(p)$ for a series of single crystals with x up to 0.14 roughly extrapolates to a putative magnetic and superconducting state at ambient pressure for x $\geq0.2$.

Tunable Berry Curvature Through Magnetic Phase Competition in a Topological Kagome Magnet

Magnetic topological phases of quantum matter are an emerging frontier in physics and material science. Along these lines, several kagome magnets have appeared as the most promising platforms. However, the magnetic nature of these materials in the presence of topological state remains an unsolved issue. Here, we explore magnetic correlations in the kagome magnet Co_3Sn_2S_2. Using muon spin-rotation, we present evidence for competing magnetic orders in the kagome lattice of this compound. Our results show that while the sample exhibits an out-of-plane ferromagnetic ground state, an in-plane antiferromagnetic state appears at temperatures above 90 K, eventually attaining a volume fraction of 80% around 170 K, before reaching a non-magnetic state. Strikingly, the reduction of the anomalous Hall conductivity above 90 K linearly follows the disappearance of the volume fraction of the ferromagnetic state. We further show that the competition of these magnetic phases is tunable through applying either an external magnetic field or hydrostatic pressure. Our results taken together suggest the thermal and quantum tuning of Berry curvature field via external tuning of magnetic order. Our study shows that Co_3Sn_2S_2 is a rare example where the magnetic competition drives the thermodynamic evolution of the Berry curvature field, thus tuning its topological state.

Nodeless Superconductivity and its Evolution with Pressure in the Layered Dirac Semimetal 2M-WS_2

The interaction between superconductivity and band topology can lead to various unconventional superconducting (SC) states, and represents a new frontier in condensed matter physics research. Recently, the transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) system 2M-WS2 has been identified as a Dirac semimetal exhibiting both superconductivity with the highest Tc = 8.5 K among all the TMD materials and topological surface states with a single Dirac cone. Here we report on muon spin rotation (muSR) and density functional theory studies of microscopic SC properties and the electronic structure in 2M-WS2 at ambient and under hydrostatic pressures (p_max = 1.9 GPa). The SC order parameter in 2M-WS2 is determined to have single-gap s-wave symmetry. We further show a strong negative pressure effect on Tc and on the SC gap. This may be partly caused by the pressure induced reduction of the size of the electron pocket around the Gamma-point, at which a band inversion appears up to the highest applied pressure. We also find that the superfluid density ns is very weakly affected by pressure. The absence of a strong pressure effect on the superfluid density and the absence of a correlation between ns and Tc in 2M-WS2, in contrast to the other SC TMDs Td-MoTe2 and 2H-NbSe2, is explained in terms of its location in the optimal (ambient pressure) and above the optimal (under pressure) superconducting regions of the phase diagram and its large distance to the other possible competing or cooperating orders. These results hint towards a complex nature of the superconductivity in TMDs, despite the observed s-wave order parameter.

Probing the quantum phase transition in Mott insulator BaCoS_2 tuned by pressure and Ni-substitution

We present a muon spin relaxation study of the Mott transition in BaCoS_2 using two independent control parameters: (i) pressure p to tune the electronic bandwidth and (ii) Ni-substitution x on the Co site to tune the band filling. For both tuning parameters, the antiferromagnetic insulating state first transitions to an antiferromagnetic metal and finally to a paramagnetic metal without undergoing any structural phase transition. BaCoS_2 under pressure displays minimal change in the ordered magnetic moment S_ord until it collapses abruptly upon entering the antiferromagnetic metallic state at p_cr ~ 1.3 GPa. In contrast, S_ord in the Ni-doped system Ba(Co_{1-x}Ni_{x})S_{2} steadily decreases with increasing x until the antiferromagnetic metallic region is reached at x_cr ~ 0.22. In both cases, significant phase separation between magnetic and nonmagnetic regions develops when approaching p_cr or x_cr, and the antiferromagnetic metallic state is characterized by weak, random, static magnetism in a small volume fraction. No dynamical critical behavior is observed near the transition for either tuning parameter. These results demonstrate that the quantum evolution of both the bandwidth- and filling-controlled metal-insulator transition at zero temperature proceeds as a first-order transition. This behavior is common to magnetic Mott transitions in RENiO_3 and V_2O_3, which are accompanied by structural transitions without the formation of an antiferromagnetic metal phase.

Gradual Enhancement of Stripe-Type Antiferromagnetism in Spin Ladder Material BaFe$_2$S$_3$ Under Pressure

We report pressure-dependent neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation/rotation measurements combined with first-principles calculations to investigate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of BaFe$_2$S$_3$ under pressure. The experimental results reveal a gradual enhancement of the stripe-type ordering temperature with increasing pressure up to 2.6 GPa and no observable change in the size of the ordered moment. The ab initio calculations suggest that the magnetism is highly sensitive to the Fe-S bond lengths and angles, clarifying discrepancies with previously published results. In contrast to our experimental observations, the calculations predict a monotonic reduction of the ordered moment with pressure. We suggest that the robustness of the stripe-type antiferromagnetism is due to strong electron correlations not fully considered in the calculations.

Chemical- and hydrostatic-pressure effects on the Kitaev honeycomb material Na$_2$IrO$_3$

The low-temperature magnetic properties of \tcr{polycrystalline} Na$_2$IrO$_3$, a candidate material for the realization of a quantum spin-liquid state, were investigated by means of muon-spin relaxation and nuclear magnetic resonance methods under chemical and hydrostatic pressure. The Li-for-Na chemical substitution promotes an inhomogeneous magnetic order, whereas hydrostatic pressure (up to 3.9\,GPa) results in an enhancement of the ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{N}$. In the first case, the inhomogeneous magnetic order suggests either short- or long-range correlations of broadly distributed $j=\,$\textonehalf\ Ir$^{4+}$ magnetic moments, reflecting local disorder. The increase of $T_\mathrm{N}$ under applied pressure points at an increased strength of three dimensional interactions arising from interlayer compression.

Breakdown of magnetic order in the pressurized Kitaev iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$

Temperature-pressure phase diagram of the Kitaev hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is explored using magnetization, thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements, as well as single-crystal x-ray diffraction under pressure and ab initio calculations. The Neel temperature of $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ increases with the slope of 0.9 K/GPa upon initial compression, but the reduction in the polarization field $H_c$ reflects a growing instability of the incommensurate order. At 1.4 GPa, the ordered state breaks down upon a first-order transition giving way to a new ground state marked by the coexistence of dynamically correlated and frozen spins. This partial freezing in the absence of any conspicuous structural defects may indicate classical nature of the resulting pressure-induced spin liquid, an observation paralleled to the increase in the nearest-neighbor off-diagonal exchange $Γ$ under pressure.

Pressure effects on the electronic properties of the undoped superconductor ThFeAsN

The recently synthesized ThFeAsN iron-pnictide superconductor exhibits a $T_c$ of 30 K, the highest of the 1111-type series in absence of chemical doping. To understand how pressure affects its electronic properties, we carried out microscopic investigations up to 3 GPa via magnetization, nuclear magnetic resonance, and muon-spin rotation experiments. The temperature dependence of the ${}^{75}$As Knight shift, the spin-lattice relaxation rates, and the magnetic penetration depth suggest a multi-band $s^{\pm}$-wave gap symmetry in the dirty limit, while the gap-to-$T_c$ ratio $Δ/k_\mathrm{B}T_c$ hints at a strong-coupling scenario. Pressure modulates the geometrical parameters, thus reducing $T_c$, as well as $T_m$, the temperature where magnetic-relaxation rates are maximized, both at the same rate of approximately -1.1 K/GPa. This decrease of $T_c$ with pressure is consistent with band-structure calculations, which relate it to the deformation of the Fe 3$d_{z^2}$ orbitals.

Nodal-to-nodeless superconducting order parameter in LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$O synthesized under high pressure

Similar to chemical doping, pressure produces and stabilizes new phases of known materials, whose properties may differ greatly from those of their standard counterparts. Here, by considering a series of LaFeAs$_{1-x}$P$_x$O iron-pnictides synthesized under high-pressure high-temperature conditions, we investigate the simultaneous effects of pressure and isoelectronic doping in the 1111 family. Results of numerous macro- and microscopic technique measurements, unambiguously show a radically different phase diagram for the pressure-grown materials, characterized by the lack of magnetic order and the persistence of superconductivity across the whole $0.3 \leq x \leq 0.7$ doping range. This unexpected scenario is accompanied by a branching in the electronic properties across $x = 0.5$, involving both the normal and superconducting phases. Most notably, the superconducting order parameter evolves from nodal (for $x < 0.5$) to nodeless (for $x \geq 0.5$), in clear contrast to other 1111 and 122 iron-based materials grown under ambient-pressure conditions.

Magnetism in Semiconducting Molybdenum Dichalcogenides

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are interesting for understanding fundamental physics of two-dimensional materials (2D) as well as for many emerging technologies, including spin electronics. Here, we report the discovery of long-range magnetic order below TM = 40 K and 100 K in bulk semiconducting TMDs 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2, respectively, by means of muon spin-rotation (muSR), scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The muon spin rotation measurements show the presence of a large and homogeneous internal magnetic fields at low temperatures in both compounds indicative of long-range magnetic order. DFT calculations show that this magnetism is promoted by the presence of defects in the crystal. The STM measurements show that the vast majority of defects in these materials are metal vacancies and chalcogen-metal antisites which are randomly distributed in the lattice at the sub-percent level. DFT indicates that the antisite defects are magnetic with a magnetic moment in the range of 0.9-2.8 mu_B. Further, we find that the magnetic order stabilized in 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2 is highly sensitive to hydrostatic pressure. These observations establish 2H-MoTe2 and 2H-MoSe2 as a new class of magnetic semiconductors and opens a path to studying the interplay of 2D physics and magnetism in these interesting semiconductors.

A low-background piston-cylinder type hybrid high pressure cell for muon-spin rotation/relaxation experiments

A low background double-wall piston-cylinder-type pressure cell is developed at the Paul Scherrer Institute. The cell is made from BERLYCO-25 (beryllium copper) and MP35N nonmagnetic alloys with the design and dimensions which are specifically adapted to muon-spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) measurements. The mechanical design and performance of the pressure cell are evaluated using finite-element analysis (FEA). By including the measured stress-strain characteristics of the material into the finite-element model, the cell dimensions are optimized with the aim to reach the highest possible pressure while maintaining the sample space large (6 mm in diameter and 12 mm high). The presented unconventional design of the double-wall piston-cylinder pressure cell with a harder outer MP35N sleeve and asofter inner CuBe cylinder enables pressures of up to 2.6 GPa to be reached at ambient temperatures, corresponding to 2.2 GPa at low temperatures without any irreversible damage to the pressure cell. The nature of the muon stopping distribution, mainly in the sample and in the CuBe cylinder, results in a low-background muSR signal.

Complementary response of static spin-stripe order and superconductivity to non-magnetic impurities in cuprates

We report muon-spin rotation and neutron-scattering experiments on non-magnetic Zn impurity effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity of the La214 cuprates. Remarkably, it was found that, for samples with hole doping x = 1/8, the spin-stripe ordering temperature T_so decreases linearly with Zn doping y and disappears at around y = 4\%, demonstrating a high sensitivity of static spin-stripe order to impurities within a CuO_2 plane. Moreover, T_so is suppressed by Zn in the same manner as is the superconducting transition temperature T_c for samples near optimal hole doping. This surprisingly similar sensitivity suggests that the spin-stripe order is dependent on intertwining with superconducting correlations.

Pressure tuning of structure, superconductivity and novel magnetic order in the Ce-underdoped electron-doped cuprate T'-Pr_1.3-xLa_0.7Ce_xCuO_4 (x = 0.1)

High-pressure neutron powder diffraction, muon-spin rotation and magnetization studies of the structural, magnetic and the superconducting properties of the Ce-underdoped superconducting (SC) electron-doped cuprate system T'-Pr_1.3-xLa_0.7Ce_xCuO_4 with x = 0.1 are reported. A strong reduction of the lattice constants a and c is observed under pressure. However, no indication of any pressure induced phase transition from T' to T structure is observed up to the maximum applied pressure of p = 11 GPa. Large and non-linear increase of the short-range magnetic order temperature T_so in T'-Pr_1.3-xLa_0.7Ce_xCuO_4 (x = 0.1) was observed under pressure. Simultaneously pressure causes a non-linear decrease of the SC transition temperature T_c. All these experiments establish the short-range magnetic order as an intrinsic and a new competing phase in SC T'-Pr_1.2La_0.7Ce_0.1CuO_4. The observed pressure effects may be interpreted in terms of the improved nesting conditions through the reduction of the in-plane and out-of-plane lattice constants upon hydrostatic pressure.

Possible topologically non-trivial superconducting order parameter in type-II Weyl semimetal T_d-MoTe_2

MoTe_2, with the orthorhombic T_d phase, is a new type (type-II) of Weyl semimetal, where the Weyl Fermions emerge at the boundary between electron and hole pockets. Non-saturating magnetoresistance (MR), and superconductivity were also observed in T_d-MoTe_2. Understanding the superconductivity in T_d-MoTe_2, which was proposed to be topologically non-trivial, is of eminent interest. Here, we report high-pressure (p_max = 1.3 GPa) muon spin rotation experiments on the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth in T_d-MoTe_2. A substantial increase of the superfluid density n_s/m^* and a linear scaling with T_c is observed under pressure. Moreover, the superconducting order parameter in T_d-MoTe_2 is determined to be two gap (s+s)-wave symmetric. We also excluded time reversal symmetry breaking in the SC state with sensitive zero-field $μ$SR experiments. Considering the previous report \cite{Balicas1} on the strong suppression of T_c in T_d-MoTe_2 by disorder, we suggest that s^{+-} (topological order parameter) state is more likely to be realized in MoTe_2 than the s^{++} (trivial) state. Should s^{+-} be the SC gap symmetry, the T_d-MoTe_2 is, to our knowledge, the first known example of a time reversal invariant topological (Weyl) superconductor.

Ground state selection under pressure in the quantum pyrochlore magnet Yb2Ti2O7

A quantum spin liquid is a novel state of matter characterized by quantum entanglement and the absence of any broken symmetry. In condensed matter, the frustrated rare-earth pyrochlore magnets Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, so-called spin ices, exhibit a classical spin liquid state with fractionalized thermal excitations (magnetic monopoles). Evidence for a quantum spin ice, in which the magnetic monopoles become long range entangled and an emergent quantum electrodynamics arises, seems within reach. The magnetic properties of the quantum spin ice candidate Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have eluded a global understanding and even the presence or absence of static magnetic order at low temperatures is controversial. Here we show that sensitivity to pressure is the missing key to the low temperature behaviour of Yb$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. By combining neutron diffraction and muon spin relaxation on a stoichiometric sample under pressure, we evidence a magnetic transition from a disordered, non-magnetic, ground state to a splayed ferromagnetic ground state.
