1/f noise from vortex-antivortex annihilation

The magnetic flux noise induced by vortices in thin superconducting films is studied. Rigid vortices in thin films as well as pancake vortices in the pancake gas regime are addressed. The vortex dynamics is described by a Feynman path integral which fully accounts for the balance between vortex entropy and vortex energetics. We find that vortex pair creation (annihilation) in the presence of pinning is a natural source for noise with a 1/f spectrum.

Observation of Andreev bound states in YBaCuO/Au/Nb ramp-type Josephson junctions

We report on Josephson and quasiparticle tunneling in YBa2Cu3O7-x(YBCO)/Au/Nb ramp junctions of several geometries. Macroscopically, tunneling occurs in the ab-plane of YBCO either in the (100) and (010) direction, or in the (110) direction. These junctions have a stable and macroscopically well defined geometry. This allows systematic investigations of both quasiparticle and Josephson tunneling over a wide range of temperature and magnetic field. With Nb superconducting, its gap appears in the quasiparticle conductance spectra as Nb coherence peaks and a dip at the center of a broadened zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP). As we increase the temperature or an applied magnetic field both the Nb coherence peaks and the dip get suppressed and the ZBCP fully develops, while states are conserved. With Nb in the normal state the ZBCP is observed up to about 77 K and is almost unaffected by an increasing field up to 7 T. The measurements are consistent with a convolution of density of states with broadened Andreev bound states formed at the YBCO/Au/Nb junction interfaces. Since junctions with different geometries are fabricated on the same substrate under the same conditions one expects to extract reliable tunneling information that is crystallographic direction sensitive. In high contrast to Josephson tunneling, however, the quasiparticle conductance spectra are crystallographic orientation insensitive: independent whether the tunneling occurs in the (100) or (110) directions, a pronounced ZBCP is always observed, consistent with microscopic roughness of the junction interfaces. Qualitatively, all these particularities regarding quasiparticle spectra hold regardless whether the YBCO thin film is twinned or untwinned.

Sheet-current distribution in a dc SQUID washer probed by vortices

We present a novel method, based on vortex imaging by low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM), to directly image the sheet-current distribution in YBa2Cu3O7 dc SQUID washers. We show that the LTSEM vortex signals are simply related to the scalar stream function describing the vortex-free circulating sheet-current distribution J. Unlike previous inversion methods that infer the current distribution from the measured magnetic field, our method uses pinned vortices as local detectors for J. Our experimental results are in very good agreement with numerical calculations of J.

3-junction SQUID rocking ratchet

We investigate 3-junction SQUIDs which show voltage rectification if biased with an ac current drive with zero mean value. The Josephson phase across the SQUID experiences an effective ratchet potential, and the device acts as an efficient rocking ratchet, as demonstrated experimentally for adiabatic and nonadiabatic drive frequencies. For high-frequency drives the rectified voltage is quantized due to synchronization of the phase dynamics with the external drive. The experimental data are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations including thermal fluctuations.

The Ruthenocuprates - Natural Superconductor-Ferromagnet Multilayers

The recently discovered ruthenocuprates have attracted great interest because of the microscopic coexistence of superconducting and ferromagnetic order. Typically, these materials become magnetically ordered at temperatures around 125-145 K and superconductivity sets in between 15 and 50 K. While superconductivity arises in the CuO2 layers the RuO2 layers in between order magnetically. In this paper we summarize some of the crystallographic, magnetic and superconducting properties of the ruthenocuprates, as obtained from investigations on polycrystalline samples as well as single crystals.

Diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a Magnetic Lattice on a Micro Chip

We experimentally study the diffraction of a Bose-Einstein condensate from a magnetic lattice, realized by a set of 372 parallel gold conductors which are micro fabricated on a silicon substrate. The conductors generate a periodic potential for the atoms with a lattice constant of 4 microns. After exposing the condensate to the lattice for several milliseconds we observe diffraction up to 5th order by standard time of flight imaging techniques. The experimental data can be quantitatively interpreted with a simple phase imprinting model. The demonstrated diffraction grating offers promising perspectives for the construction of an integrated atom interferometer.

High efficiency deterministic Josephson Vortex Ratchet

We investigate experimentally a Josephson vortex ratchet -- a fluxon in an asymmetric periodic potential driven by a deterministic force with zero time average. The highly asymmetric periodic potential is created in an underdamped annular long Josephson junction by means of a current injector providing efficiency of the device up to 91%. We measured the ratchet effect for driving forces with different spectral content. For monochromatic high-frequency drive the rectified voltage becomes quantized. At high driving frequencies we also observe chaos, sub-harmonic dynamics and voltage reversal due to the inertial mass of a fluxon.

Non-ideal artificial phase discontinuity in long Josephson 0-kappa-junctions

We investigate the creation of an arbitrary $κ$-discontinuity of the Josephson phase in a long Nb-AlO_x-Nb Josephson junction (LJJ) using a pair of tiny current injectors, and study the formation of fractional vortices formed at this discontinuity. The current I_inj, flowing from one injector to the other, creates a phase discontinuity kappa ~ I_inj. The calibration of injectors is discussed in detail. The small but finite size of injectors leads to some deviations of the properties of such a 0-kappa-LJJ from the properties of a LJJ with an ideal kappa-discontinuity. These experimentally observed deviations in the dependence of the critical current on I_inj$ and magnetic field can be well reproduced by numerical simulation assuming a finite injector size. The physical origin of these deviations is discussed.

Quantum tunneling of semifluxons

We consider a system of two semifluxons of opposite polarity in a 0-pi-0 long Josephson junction, which classically can be in one of two degenerate states: up-down or down-up. When the distance $a$ between the 0-pi boundaries (semifluxon's centers) is a bit larger than the crossover distance $a_c$, the system can switch from one state to the other due to thermal fluctuations or quantum tunneling. We map this problem to the dynamics of a single particle in a double well potential and estimate parameters for which quantum effects emerge. We also determine the classical-to-quantum crossover temperature as well as the tunneling rate (energy level splitting) between the states up-down and down-up.

Observation of Andreev bound states in bicrystal grain-boundary Josephson junctions of the electron doped superconductor LaCeCuO

We observe a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) in the ab-plane quasiparticle tunneling spectra of thin film grain-boundary Josephson junctions made of the electron doped cuprate superconductor LaCeCuO. An applied magnetic field reduces the spectral weight around zero energy and shifts it non-linearly to higher energies consistent with a Doppler shift of the Andreev bound states (ABS) energy. For all magnetic fields the ZBCP appears simultaneously with the onset of superconductivity. These observations strongly suggest that the ZBCP results from the formation of ABS at the junction interfaces, and, consequently, that there is a sign change in the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter of this compound consistent with a d-wave symmetry.

Controllable plasma energy bands in a 1D crystal of fractional Josephson vortices

We consider a 1D chain of fractional vortices in a long Josephson junction with alternating $\pmκ$ phase discontinuities. Since each vortex has its own eigenfrequency, the inter-vortex coupling results in eigenmode splitting and in the formation of an oscillatory energy band for plasma waves. The band structure can be controlled at the design time by choosing the distance between vortices or \emph{during experiment} by varying the topological charge of vortices or the bias current. Thus one can construct an artificial vortex crystal with controllable energy bands for plasmons.

Oscillatory eigenmodes and stability of one and two arbitrary fractional vortices in long Josephson 0-kappa-junctions

We investigate theoretically the eigenmodes and the stability of one and two arbitrary fractional vortices pinned at one and two $κ$-phase discontinuities in a long Josephson junction. In the particular case of a single $κ$-discontinuity, a vortex is spontaneously created and pinned at the boundary between the 0 and $κ$-regions. In this work we show that only two of four possible vortices are stable. A single vortex has an oscillatory eigenmode with a frequency within the plasma gap. We calculate this eigenfrequency as a function of the fractional flux carried by a vortex. For the case of two vortices, pinned at two $κ$-discontinuities situated at some distance $a$ from each other, splitting of the eigenfrequencies occur. We calculate this splitting numerically as a function of $a$ for different possible ground states. We also discuss the presence of a critical distance below which two antiferromagnetically ordered vortices form a strongly coupled ``vortex molecule'' that behaves as a single object and has only one eigenmode.

Ground states of one and two fractional vortices in long Josephson 0-kappa-junctions

Half integer Josephson vortices in 0-$π$-junctions, discussed theoretically and observed experimentally, spontaneously appear at the point where the Josephson phase is $π$-discontinuous. The creation of \emph{arbitrary} discontinuities of the Josephson phase has been demonstrated recently. Here we study fractional vortices formed at an arbitrary $κ$-discontinuity, discuss their stability and possible ground states. The two stable states are not mirror symmetric. Furthermore, the possible ground states formed at two $κ$-discontinuities separated by a distance $a$ are investigated, and the energy and the regions of stability of each ground state are calculated. We also show that the ground states may strongly depend on the distance $a$ between the discontinuities. There is a crossover distance $a_c$ such that for $a a_c$ the ground states may be qualitatively different.

Microscopic Analysis of Low-Frequency Flux Noise in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ Direct Current Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices

We use low-temperature scanning electron microscopy combined with SQUID detection of magnetic flux to image vortices and to investigate low-frequency flux noise in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ thin film SQUIDs. The low-frequency flux noise shows a nonlinear increase with magnetic cooling field up to 60 $μ$T. This effect is explained by the surface potential barrier at the SQUID hole. By correlating flux noise data with the spatial distribution of vortices, we obtain information on spatial fluctuations of vortices on a microscopic scale, e.g. an average vortex hopping length of approximately 10 nm.

Fluxon-semifluxon interaction in an annular long Josephson 0-pi-junction

We investigate theoretically the interaction between integer and half-integer Josephson vortices (fluxons and semifluxons) in an annular Josephson junction. Semifluxons usually appear at the 0-$π$-boundary where there is a $π$-discontinuity of the Josephson phase. We study the simplest, but the most interesting case of one $π$-discontinuity in a loop, which can be created only artificially. We show that measuring the current-voltage characteristic after injection of an integer fluxon, one can determine the polarity of a semifluxon. Depending on the relative polarity of fluxon and semifluxon the static configuration may be stable or unstable, but in the dynamic state both configurations are stable. We also calculate the depinning current of $N$ fluxons pinned by an arbitrary fractional vortex.

Intrinsic Josephson Effects in the Magnetic Superconductor RuSr2GdCu2O8

We have measured interlayer current transport in small sized RuSr2GdCu2O8 single crystals. We find a clear intrinsic Josephson effect showing that the material acts as a natural superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-insulator-superconductor superlattice. So far, we detected no unconventional behavior due to the magnetism of the RuO2 layers.

Dynamics of semifluxons in Nb long Josephson 0-pi junctions

We propose, implement and test experimentally long Josephson 0-pi junctions fabricated using conventional Nb-AlOx-Nb technology. We show that using a pair of current injectors, one can create an arbitrary discontinuity of the Josephson phase and in particular a pi-discontinuity, just like in d-wave/s-wave or in d-wave/d-wave junctions, and study fractional Josephson vortices which spontaneously appear. Moreover, using such junctions, we can investigate the \emph{dynamics} of the fractional vortices -- a domain which is not yet available for natural 0-pi-junctions due to their inherently high damping. We observe half-integer zero-field steps which appear on the current-voltage characteristics due to hopping of semifluxons.

Electronic compressibility and charge imbalance relaxation in cuprate superconductors

In the material SmLa$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ with alternating intrinsic Josephson junctions we explain theoretically the relative amplitude of the two plasma peaks in transmission by taking into account the spatial dispersion of the Josephson Plasma Resonance in $c$ direction due to charge coupling. From this and the magnetic field dependence of the plasma peaks in the vortex solid and liquid states it is shown that the electronic compressibility of the CuO$_2$ layers is consistent with a free electron value. Also the London penetration depth $λ_{ab} \approx 1100 {\rm Å}$ near $T_c$ can be determined. The voltage response in the $IV$-curve of a Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_8$ mesa due to microwave irradiation or current injection in a second mesa is related to the nonequilibrium charge imbalance of quasiparticles and Cooper pairs and from our experimental data the relaxation time $\sim 100 {\rm ps}$ is obtained.
