Ground state and bias current induced rearrangement of semifluxons in 0-pi long Josephson junctions

We investigate numerically a long Josephson junction with several phase pi-discontinuity points. Such junctions are usually fabricated as a ramp between an anisotropic cuprate superconductor like YBCO and an isotropic metal superconductor like Nb. From the top, they look like zigzags with pi-jumps of the Josephson phase at the corners. These pi-jumps, at certain conditions, lead to the formation of half-integer flux quanta, which we call semifluxons (SF), pinned at the corners. We show (a) that the spontaneous formation of SFs depends on the junction length, (b) that the ground state without SFs can be converted to a state with SFs by applying a bias current, (c) that the SF configuration can be rearranged by the bias current. All these effects can be observed using a SQUID microscope.

Semi-fluxons in long Josephson 0-pi-junctions

We investigate analytically long Josephson junctions with phase pi-discontinuity points. Such junctions are usually fabricated as a ramp between a superconductor like YBCO with d-wave symmetry of the order parameter and an s-wave superconductor like Nb. From the top, they look like zigzags with pi-jumps of the Josephson phase at the corners. These pi-jumps, at certain conditions, lead to the formation of half-integer flux quanta, which we call semi-fluxons, pinned at the corners. We derive a version of sine-Gordon equation which describes the dynamics of the Josephson phase in such structures, and obtain an explicit formula which describes the shape of a semi-fluxon. Some properties of semi-fluxons are discussed. We propose a way to construct artificial pi-junctions using only s-wave superconductors.

Charge-imbalance effects in intrinsic Josephson systems

We report on two types of experiments with intrinsic Josephson systems made from layered superconductors which show clear evidence of nonequilibrium effects: 1. In 2-point measurements of IV-curves in the presence of high- frequency radiation a shift of the voltage of Shapiro steps from the canonical value hf/(2e) has been observed. 2. In the IV-curves of double-mesa structures an influence of the current through one mesa on the voltage measured on the other mesa is detected. Both effects can be explained by charge-imbalance on the superconducting layers produced by the quasi-particle current, and can be described successfully by a recently developed theory of nonequilibrium effects in intrinsic Josephson systems.

Intrinsic Tunneling in Cuprates and Manganites

The most anisotropic high temperature superconductors like Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8, as well as the recently discovered layered manganite La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 are layered metallic systems where the interlayer current transport occurs via sequential tunneling of charge carriers. As a consequence, in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 adjacent CuO2 double layers form an intrinsic Josephson tunnel junction while in in La1.4Sr1.6Mn2O7 tunneling of spin polarized charge carriers between adjacent MnO2 layers leads to an intrinsic spin valve effect. We present and discuss interlayer transport experiments for both systems. To perform the experiments small sized mesa structures were patterned on top of single crystals of the above materials defining stacks of a small number of intrinsic Josephson junctions and intrinsic spin valves, respectively.

Low-frequency flux noise and visualization of vortices in a YBa2Cu3O7 dc SQUID washer with an integrated input coil

We used low-temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM) for imaging quantized magnetic flux (vortices) in direct current (dc) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) with approximately 1 micron spatial resolution at temperature T=77 K in a controllable magnetic field up to 20 microTesla. We demonstrate that LTSEM allows to image the spatial distribution of vortices in a YBa2Cu3O7/SrTiO3/YBa2Cu3O7 multilayer thin-film structure consisting of a dc SQUID washer with an integrated input coil on top. Simultaneously, we are able to measure the low-frequency noise of the sample under test, which allows to correlate the spatial distribution of vortices with low-frequency noise in the SQUID.

Voltage-flux-characteristics of asymmetric dc SQUIDs

We present a detailed analysis of voltage-flux V(Phi)-characteristics for asymmetric dc SQUIDs with various kinds of asymmetries. For finite asymmetry alpha_I in the critical currents of the two Josephson junctions, the minima in the V(Phi)-characteristics for bias currents of opposite polarity are shifted along the flux axis by Delta_Phi = (alpha_I)*(beta_L) relative to each other; beta_L is the screening parameter. This simple relation allows the determination of alpha_I in our experiments on YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x} dc SQUIDs and comparison with theory. Extensive numerical simulations within a wide range of beta_L and noise parameter Gamma reveal a systematic dependence of the transfer function V_Phi on alpha_I and alpha_R (junction resistance asymmetry). As for the symmetric dc SQUID, V_Phi factorizes into g(Gamma*beta_L)*f(alpha_I,beta_L), where now f also depends on alpha_I. For β_L below five we find mostly a decrease of V_Phi with increasing alpha_I, which however can only partially account for the frequently observed discrepancy in V_Phi between theory and experiment for high-T_c dc SQUIDs.

Phonons in intrinsic Josephson systems with parallel magnetic field

Subgap resonances in the I-V curves of layered superconductors are explained by the coupling between Josephson oscillations and phonons with dispersion in c-direction. In the presence of a magnetic field applied parallel to the layers additional structures due to fluxon motion appear. Their coupling with phonons is investigated theoretically and a shift of the phonon resonances in strong magnetic fields is predicted.

Coupling of intrinsic Josephson oscillations in layered superconductors by charge fluctuations

The coupling of Josephson oscillations in layered superconductors is studied with help of a tunneling Hamiltonian formalism. The general form of the current density across the barriers between the superconducting layers is derived. The induced charge fluctuations on the superconducting layers lead to a coupling of the Josephson oscillations in different junctions. A simplified set of equations is then used to study the non-linear dynamics of the system. In particular the influence of the coupling on the current-voltage characteristics is investigated and upper limits for the coupling strength are estimated from a comparison with experiments on cuprate superconductors.

A microscopic model for the intrinsic Josephson tunneling in high-T_C superconductors

A quantitative analysis of a microscopic model for the intrinsic Josephson effect in high-temperature superconductors based on interlayer tunneling is presented. The pairing correlations in the CuO_2-planes are modelled by a 2-D Hubbard-model with attractive interaction, a model which accounts well for some of the observed features such as the short planar coherence length. The stack of Hubbard planes is arranged on a torus, which is threaded by a magnetic flux. The current perpendicular to the planes is calculated as a function of applied flux (i. e. the phase), and -- after careful elimination of finite-size effects due to single-particle tunneling -- found to display a sinusoidal field dependence in accordance with interlayer Josephson tunneling. Studies of the temperature dependence of the supercurrent reveal at best a mild elevation of the Josephson transition temperature compared to the planar Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature. These and other results on the dependence of the model parameters are compared with a standard BCS evaluation.

Coupling between phonons and intrinsic Josephson oscillations in cuprate superconductors

The recently reported subgap structures observed in the current-voltage characteristic of intrinsic Josephson junctions in the high-T_c superconductors Tl_2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{10+δ} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} are explained by the coupling between c-axis phonons and Josephson oscillations. A model is developed where c-axis lattice vibrations between adjacent superconducting multilayers are excited by the Josephson oscillations in a resistive junction. The voltages of the lowest structures correspond well to the frequencies of longitudinal c-axis phonons with large oscillator strength in the two materials, providing a new measurement technique for this quantity.

Subgap structures in the current-voltage characteristic of the intrinsic Josephson effect due to phonons

A modified RSJ-model for the coupling of intrinsic Josephson oscillations and c-axis phonons in the high-T_c superconductors Tl_2Ba_2Ca_2Cu_3O_{10+δ} and Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ} is deveoped. This provides a very good explanation for recently reported subgap structures in the I-V-characteristic of the c-axis transport. It turns out that the voltages of these structures coincide with the eigenfrequencies of longitudinal optical phonons, providing a new measurement technique for this quantity. The significantly enhanced microwave emission at the subgap structures in both the GHz and THz region is discussed.
