Anisotropic dressing of charge-carriers in the electron-doped cuprate superconductor Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) from angle-resolved photoemission measurements

Angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) evidence anisotropic dressing of charge-carriers due to many-body interactions. Most significantly, the scattering rate along the zone boundary saturates for binding energies larger than ~200 meV, while along the diagonal direction it increases nearly linearly with the binding energy in the energy range ~150-500 meV. These results indicate that many-body interactions along the diagonal direction are strong down to the bottom of the band, while along the zone-bounday they become very weak at energies above ~200 meV.

Terahertz magneto-transport measurements in underdoped PCCO and comparison with ARPES

We present magneto-transport measurements performed on underdoped PCCO at THz frequencies as a function of temperature and doping. A rapidly decreasing Hall mass is observed as the doping is reduced consistent with the formation of small electron Fermi pockets. However, both dc and infrared (IR) magneto-transport data strongly deviate from the predictions of transport theory in the relaxation time approximation (RTA) based on angular resolved photoemission data. The Hall mass is observed to increase continuously with increasing temperature with no signature at the Neel temperature. In the paramagnetic state, the temperature dependence of the Hall mass is consistent with current vertex corrections to the Hall conductivity due to magnetic fluctuations as observed in overdoped PCCO. Possible causal mechanisms for the discrepancy between transport theory within the RTA and the magneto-transport data are discussed.

Point contact spectroscopy of Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ in high magnetic fields

We have studied the density of states of the normal state of the electron-doped superconductor Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ at low temperatures and in magnetic fields up to 31 Tesla using point contact spectroscopy on single crystals. Our data clearly reveal an anomalous gap in the normal state density of states. This normal state gap survives even in the highest applied field of 31 T. Our results cast doubt over whether this gap found in electron-doped cuprates is the analog of the pseudogap in hole-doped cuprates. We have suggested an alternate origin of the normal state gap, which involves the effect of disorder and electron correlations at the surface of cuprates.

Normal State Nernst Effect in Electron-doped Pr2-xCexCuO4: Superconducting Fluctuations and Two-band Transport

We report a systematic study of normal state Nernst effect in the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ over a wide range of doping (0.05$\leq x \leq$0.21) and temperature. At low temperatures, we observed a notable vortex Nernst signal above T$_c$ in the underdoped films, but no such normal state vortex Nernst signal is found in the overdoped region. The superconducting fluctuations in the underdoped region are most likely incoherent phase fluctuations as found in hole-doped cuprates. At high temperatures, a large normal state Nernst signal is found at dopings from slightly underdoped to highly overdoped. Combined with normal state thermoelectric power, Hall effect and magnetoresistance measurements, the large Nernst effect is compatible with two-band model. For the highly overdoped films, the large Nernst effect is anomalous and not explainable with a simple hole-like Fermi surface seen in photoemission experiments.

Observation of a 500meV Collective Mode in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ and Nd$_2$CuO$_4$

Utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, we report a previously unobserved mode in the excitation spectrum of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ at 500 meV. The mode is peaked around the ($π$,0) point in reciprocal space and is observed to soften, and broaden, away from this point. Samples with x=0, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.17 were studied. The new mode is found to be rapidly suppressed with increasing Sr content and is absent at $x$=0.17, where it is replaced by a continuum of excitations. The peak is only observed when the incident x-ray polarization is normal to the CuO planes and is also present in Nd$_2$CuO$_4$. We suggest possible explanations for this excitation.

Upper critical field of electron-doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_{4-δ}$ in parallel magnetic fields

We report a systematic study of the resistive superconducting transition in the electron-doped cuprates Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ down to 1.5 K for magnetic field up to 58 T applied parallel to the conducting ab-planes. We find that the zero temperature parallel critical field (H$_{c2\parallel ab}$(0)) exceeds 58 T for the underdoped and optimally-doped films. For the overdoped films, 58 T is sufficient to suppress the superconductivity. We also find that the Zeeman energy $μ_B$H$_{c2\parallel ab}$(0) reaches the superconducting gap ($\triangle_0$), i.e. $μ_B$H$_{c2\parallel ab}(0)\simeq \triangle_0$, for all the dopings, strongly suggesting that the parallel critical field is determined by the Pauli paramagnetic limit in electron-doped cuprates.

Evidence for a quantum phase transition in electron-doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ from Thermopower measurements

The evidence for a quantum phase transition under the superconducting dome in the high-$T_c$ cuprates has been controversial. We report low temperature normal state thermopower(S) measurements in electron-doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ as a function of doping (x from 0.11 to 0.19). We find that at 2K both S and S/T increase dramatically from x=0.11 to 0.16 and then saturate in the overdoped region. This behavior has a remarkable similarity to previous Hall effect results in Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ . Our results are further evidence for an antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic quantum phase transition in electron-doped cuprates near x=0.16.

Correlation between incoherent phase fluctuations and disorder in Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ epitaxial films from Nernst effect measurements

Measurements of Nernst effect, resistivity and Hall angle on epitaxial films of Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_x$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$(Pr-YBCO, 0$\leq x\leq$0.4) are reported over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. While the Hall and resistivity data suggest a broad pseudogap regime in accordance with earlier results, these first measurements of the Nernst effect on Pr-YBCO show a large signal above the superconducting transition temperature(T$_c$). This effect is attributed to vortex-like excitations in the phase incoherent condensate existing above T$_c$. A correlation between disorder and the width of the phase fluctuation regime has been established for the YBCO family of cuprates, which suggests a T$_c\approx$110K for disorder-free YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$.

High-field Hall resistivity and magnetoresistance in electron-doped Pr_2-xCe_xCuO_{4-δ}

We report resistivity and Hall effect measurements in electron-doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ films in magnetic field up to 58 T. In contrast to hole-doped cuprates, we find a surprising non-linear magnetic field dependence of Hall resistivity at high field in the optimally doped and overdoped films. We also observe a crossover from quadratic to linear field dependence of the positive magnetoresistance in the overdoped films. A spin density wave induced Fermi surface reconstruction model can be used to qualitatively explain both the Hall effect and magnetoresistance.

Hole superconductivity in the electron-doped superconductor PCCO

We measure the resistivity and Hall angle of the electron-doped superconductor Pr_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 as a function of doping and temperature. The resistivity Rho_xx at temperatures 100K < T < 300K is mostly sensitive to the electrons. Its temperature behavior is doping independent over a wide doping range and even for non superconducting samples. On the other hand, the transverse resistivity rho_xy, or the Hall angle theta_H where cot(theta_H) = rho_xx/rho_xy, is sensitive to both holes and electrons. Its temperature dependence is strongly influenced by doping, and cot(theta_H) can be used to identify optimum doping (the maximum Tc) even well above the critical temperature. These results lead to a conclusion that in electron doped cuprates holes are responsible for the superconductivity.

Local tunneling spectroscopy of the electron-doped cuprate Sm1.85Ce0.15CuO4

We present local tunneling spectroscopy in the optimally electron-doped cuprate Sm2-xCexCuO4 x=0.15. A clear signature of the superconducting gap is observed with an amplitude ranging from place to place and from sample to sample (Delta~3.5-6meV). Another spectroscopic feature is simultaneously observed at high energy above \pm 50meV. Its energy scale and temperature evolution is found to be compatible with previous photoemission and optical experiments. If interpreted as the signature of antiferromagnetic order in the samples, these results could suggest the coexistence on the local scale of antiferromagnetism and superconductivity on the electron-doped side of cuprate superconductors.

Dirty Superconductivity in the Electron-Doped Cuprate PCCO: a Tunneling Study

We report a tunneling study between Pr_2-xCe_xCuO_{4-delta} (PCCO) and Lead as a function of doping, temperature and magnetic field. The temperature dependence of the gap follows the BCS prediction. Our data fits a nonmonotonic d-wave order parameter for the whole doping range studied. From our data we are able to conclude that the electron-doped cuprate PCCO is a weak coupling, BCS, dirty superconductor.

Infrared Hall Effect in the electron-doped high Tc cuprate Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4)

The electron-doped cuprate Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) is investigated using infrared magneto-optical measurements. The optical Hall conductivity sigma_{xy} shows a strong doping, frequency and temperature dependence consistent with the presence of a temperature and doping-dependent coherent backscattering amplitude which doubles the electronic unit cell. The data suggest that the coherent backscattering vanishes at a quantum critical point inside the superconducting dome and is associated with the commensurate antiferromagnetic order observed by other workers. Using a spectral weight analysis we have further investigated the Fermi-liquid like behavior of the overdoped sample. The observed Hall-conductance spectral weight is about 10 times less than that predicted by band theory, raising the fundamental question concerning the effect of Mott and antiferromagnetic correlations on the Hall conductance of strongly correlated materials.

Optical determination of the superconducting energy gap in electron-doped Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4

The optical properties of single crystal Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_4 have been measured over a wide frequency range above and below the critical temperature (T_c \simeq 20 K). In the normal state the coherent part of the conductivity is described by the Drude model, from which the scattering rate just above T_c is determined to be 1/τ\simeq 80 cm^{-1}. The condition that \hbar/τ\approx 2k_B T near T_c appears to be a general result in many of the cuprate superconductors. Below T_c the formation of a superconducting energy gap is clearly visible in the reflectance, from which the gap maximum is estimated to be Δ_0 \simeq 35 cm^{-1} (4.3 meV). The ability to observe the superconducting energy gap in the optical properties favors the nonmonotonic over the monotonic description of the d-wave gap. The penetration depth for T\ll T_c is λ\simeq 2000 Å, which when taken with the estimated value for the dc conductivity just above T_c of σ_{dc} \simeq 35 \times 10^3 Ω^{-1}cm^{-1} places this material on the general scaling line for the cuprates defined by 1/λ^2 \propto σ_{dc}(T\simeq T_c) \times T_c. This result is consistent with the observation that 1/τ\approx 2Δ_0, which implies that the material is not in the clean limit.

c-Axis longitudinal magnetoresistance of the electron-doped superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4

We report c-axis resistivity and longitudinal magnetoresistance measurements of superconducting Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4 single crystals. In the temperature range 13K<T<32K, a negative magnetoresistance is observed at fields just above Hc2. Our studies suggest that this negative magnetoresistance is caused by superconducting fluctuations. At lower temperatures (T<13K), a different magnetoresistance behavior and a resistivity upturn are observed, whose origin is still unknown.

Is La1.85Y0.15CuO4 an oxygen-doped cuprate superconductor?

We report resistivity, Hall effect, Nernst effect, and magnetoresistance measurements on T'-phase La1.85Y0.15CuO (LYCO) films prepared by pulsed laser deposition under different oxygen conditions. Our results show that superconductivity in LYCO originates from an oxygen-doped Mott-like insulator and not from a weakly correlated, half-filled band metal as proposed previously.

Role of oxygen in the electron-doped superconducting cuprates

We report on resistivity and Hall measurements in thin films of the electron-doped superconducting cuprate Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$. Comparisons between x = 0.17 samples subjected to either ion-irradiation or oxygenation demonstrate that changing the oxygen content has two separable effects: 1) a doping effect similar to that of cerium, and 2) a disorder effect. These results are consistent with prior speculations that apical oxygen removal is necessary to achieve superconductivity in this compound.
