Evolution of Superconductivity in Electron-Doped Cuprates: Magneto-Raman Spectroscopy

The electron-doped cuprates Pr_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 and Nd_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 have been studied by electronic Raman spectroscopy across the entire region of the superconducting (SC) phase diagram. The SC pairing strength is found to be consistent with a weak-coupling regime except in the under-doped region where we observe an in-gap collective mode at 4.5 k_{B}T_c while the maximum amplitude of the SC gap is ~8 k_{B}T_{c}. In the normal state, doped carriers divide into coherent quasi-particles (QPs) and carriers that remain incoherent. The coherent QPs mainly reside in the vicinity of (π/2, π/2) regions of the Brillouin zone (BZ). We find that only coherent QPs contribute to the superfluid density in the B_{2g} channel. The persistence of SC coherence peaks in the B_{2g} channel for all dopings implies that superconductivity is mainly governed by interactions between the hole-like coherent QPs in the vicinity of (π/2, π/2) regions of the BZ. We establish that superconductivity in the electron-doped cuprates occurs primarily due to pairing and condensation of hole-like carriers. We have also studied the excitations across the SC gap by Raman spectroscopy as a function of temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) for several different cerium dopings (x). Effective upper critical field lines H*_{c2}(T, x) at which the superfluid stiffness vanishes and H^{2Δ}_{c2}(T, x) at which the SC gap amplitude is suppressed by field have been determined; H^{2Δ}_{c2}(T, x) is larger than H*_{c2}(T, x) for all doping concentrations. The difference between the two quantities suggests the presence of phase fluctuations that increase for x< 0.15. It is found that the magnetic field suppresses the magnitude of the SC gap linearly at surprisingly small fields.

Magnetic field dependence of the low-temperature specific heat of the electron-doped superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4

We remeasured the magnetic field dependence of the low-temperature specific heat of the electron-doped superconductor Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4 (T_C=22\pm 2K) under a different measurement procedure. Under field-cooling, the electronic specific heat follows C_{el}(H, T)=γ(H)T from 4.5K down to 1.8K. In the field range H_{C1}<H<0.5 H_{C2}, the Sommerfeld coefficient γ(H) is well fit by a power-law γ(H)\sim H^{1/2}. This result suggests that the pairing symmetry is d-wave-like at all temperatures below 4.5K. Our new measurement shows no evidence for the linear field dependence of γ(H) found previously at T=2K.

Evolution of Coherence and Superconductivity in Electron-Doped Cuprates

The electron-doped cuprates were studied by electronic Raman spectroscopy across the entire region of the superconducting (SC) phase diagram. We determined that the magnitude of the SC order parameter varies between 4.6 and 3.5 k_BT_c, consistent with weak coupling BCS theory. Using a ``Raman conductivity" sum rule, we found that doped carriers divide into coherent quasi-particles (QPs) and carriers that remain incoherent. The coherent QPs mainly reside in the vicinity of (pi/2a, pi/2a) regions of the Brillouin zone. The carriers doped beyond optimal doping remain incoherent. Only coherent QPs contribute to the superfluid density in the SC state.

Tunneling into the normal state of Pr(2-x)CexCuO4

The temperature dependence of the tunneling conductance was measured for various doping levels of Pr(2-x)CexCuO4 using planar junctions. A normal state gap is seen at all doping levels studied, x=0.11 to x=0.19. We find it to vanish above a certain temperature T*. T* is greater than Tc for the underdoped region and it follows Tc on the overdoped side. This behavior suggests finite pairing amplitude above Tc on the underdoped side.

Evidence for a quantum phase transition in the electron-doped cuprate Pr2-xCexCuO4+d from Hall and resistivity measurements

The doping and temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient, RH, and ab-plane resistivity in the normal state down to 350mK is reported for oriented films of the electron-doped high-Tc superconductor Pr2-xCexCuO4+d. The doping dependence of b (r=r0+AT^b) and R_sub_H (at 350 mK) suggest a quantum phase transition at a critical doping near x=0.165.

Origin of the anomalous low temperature upturn in resistivity in the electron-doped cuprates

The temperature, doping and field dependences of the magnetoresistance (MR) in Pr_(2-x)Ce_(x)CuO_(4-delta) films are reported. We distinguish between orbital MR, found when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the ab planes, and the nearly isotropic spin MR. The latter, the major MR effect in the superconducting samples, appears in the region of the doping-temperature phase diagram where d(rho)/dT<0, or an upturn in the resistivity appears. We conclude that the upturn originates from spin scattering processes.

Infrared Properties of Electron Doped Cuprates: Tracking Normal State Gaps and Quantum Critical Behavior in Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4)

We report the temperature dependence of the infrared-visible conductivity of Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) thin films. When varying the doping from a non-superconducting film (x = 0.11) to a superconducting overdoped film (x = 0.17), we observe, up to optimal doping (x = 0.15), a partial gap opening. A model combining a spin density wave gap and a frequency and temperature dependent self energy reproduces our data reasonably well. The magnitude of this gap extrapolates to zero for x ~ 0.17 indicating the coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity in this material and the existence of a quantum critical point at this Ce concentration.

Infrared Signature of the Superconducting State in Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4)

We measured the far infrared reflectivity of two superconducting Pr(2-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) films above and below Tc. The reflectivity in the superconducting state increases and the optical conductivity drops at low energies, in agreement with the opening of a (possibly) anisotropic superconducting gap. The maximum energy of the gap scales roughly with Tc as 2 Delta_{max} / kB Tc ~ 4.7. We determined absolute values of the penetration depth at 5 K as lambda_{ab} = (3300 +/- 700) A for x = 0.15 and lambda_{ab} = (2000 +/- 300) A for x = 0.17. A spectral weight analysis shows that the Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule is satisfied at conventional low energy scales \~ 4 Delta_{max}.

Optical properties of (Pr,Ce)2CuO4

We studied the optical conductivity of electron doped Pr{1-x)Ce(x)CuO(4) from the underdoped to the overdoped regime. The observation of low to high frequency spectral weight transfer reveals the presence of a gap, except in the overdoped regime. A Drude peak at all temperatures shows the partial nature of this gap. The close proximity of the doping at which the gap vanishes to the antiferromagnetic phase boundary leads us to assign this partial gap to a spin density wave.

Co-occurrence of Superparamagnetism and Anomalous Hall Effect in Highly Reduced Cobalt Doped Rutile TiO2 Films

We report a detailed magnetic and structural analysis of highly reduced Co doped rutile TiO2 films displaying an anomalous Hall effect (AHE). The temperature and field dependence of magnetization, and transmission electron microscopy clearly establish the presence of nano-sized superparamagnetic cobalt clusters of 8-10 nm size in the films at the interface. The co-occurrence of superparamagnetism and AHE raises questions regarding the use of the AHE as a test of the intrinsic nature of ferromagnetism in diluted magnetic semiconductors.

Temperature dependent change in the symmetry of the order parameter in an electron-doped high-temperature superconductor

We present specific heat measurements which show an unexpected phase transition from d-wave symmetry to s-wave symmetry as the temperature is reduced in electron-doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (PCCO), in both optimal and over-doped single crystals. The field dependence of electronic specific heat (C$_{el}$) is linear at T=2K, consistent with s-wave symmetry, and non-linear, consistent with d-wave symmetry, at T$\geq$3K. This behavior is most consistent with a phase transition in the symmetry of the order parameter as the temperature is changed. Such a phase transition could be an explanation for the previous controversial results of different experiments, performed at different temperatures in the electron-doped cuprates.

Hall effect in cobalt-doped TiO$_{2-δ}$

We report Hall effect measurements on thin films of cobalt-doped TiO$_{2-δ}$. Films with low carrier concentrations (10$^{18}$ - 10$^{19}$) yield a linear behavior in the Hall data while those having higher carrier concentrations (10$^{21}$ - 10$^{22}$) display anomalous behavior near zero field. In the entire range of carrier concentration, n-type conduction is observed. The appearance of the anomalous behavior is accompanied by a possible structural change from rutile TiO$_{2}$ to Ti$_[n}$O$_{2n-1}$ Magneli phase(s).

Co-doped LaLa1-xSrxTiO3-d : A Diluted Magnetic Oxide System with High Curie Temperature

Ferromagnetism is observed at and above room temperature in pulsed laser deposited epitaxial films of Co-doped Ti-based oxide perovskite (La1-xSrxTiO3-d). The system has the characteristics of an intrinsic diluted magnetic semiconductor (metal) at low concentrations (<~ 2 %), but develops inhomogeneity at higher cobalt concentrations. The films range from being opaque metallic to transparent semiconducting depending on the oxygen pressure during growth and are yet ferromagnetic.

Inhomogeneous electronic structure probed by spin-echo experiments in the electron doped high-Tc superconductor Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y}

63Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-echo decay rate (T_2^{-1}) measurements are reported for the normal and superconducting states of a single crystal of Pr_{1.85}Ce_{0.15}CuO_{4-y} (PCCO) in a magnetic field B_0=9T over the temperature range 2K<T<200K. The spin-echo decay rate is temperature-dependent for T<55K, and has a substantial dependence on the radio frequency (rf) pulse parameters below T~25K. This dependence indicates that T_2^{-1} is strongly effected by a local magnetic field distribution that can be modified by the rf pulses, including ones that are not at the nuclear Larmor frequency. The low-temperature results are consistent with the formation of a static inhomogeneous electronic structure that couples to the rf fields of the pulses.

Nernst Effect in Electron-Doped Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$

The Nernst effect of Pr$_{2-x}$Ce$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (x=0.13, 0.15, and 0.17) has been measured on thin film samples between 5-120 K and 0-14 T. In comparison to recent measurements on hole-doped cuprates that showed an anomalously large Nernst effect above the resistive T$_c$ and H$_{c2}$ \cite{xu,wang1,wang2,capan}, we find a normal Nernst effect above T$_c$ and H$_{c2}$ for all dopings. The lack of an anomalous Nernst effect in the electron-doped compounds supports the models that explain this effect in terms of amplitude and phase fluctuations in the hole-doped cuprates. In addition, the H$_{c2}$(T) determined from the Nernst effect shows a conventional behavior for all dopings. The energy gap determined from H$_{c2}$(0) decreases as the system goes from under-doping to over-dopingin agreement with the recent tunnelling experiments.

Low-energy excitations around (π/2, π/2) points in the pseudogap phase of Nd_1.85Ce_0.15CuO_4

Polarized electronic Raman scattering from the NCCO superconductor at optimal electron doping (T_c=22 K) reveals the formation of an anisotropic pseudogap below a characteristic temperature T* ~ 220 K and energy E*_g = 850 cm-1. Below T* a pronounced suppression of the incoherent spectral weight below E*_g in the nodal directions of k-space is observed. This is concomitant with the emergence of long-lived excitations in the vicinity of the (π/2, π/2) points that do not contribute to the optical conductivity.

First-order nature of the ferromagnetic phase transition in (La-Ca)MnO_3 near optimal doping

Neutron scattering has been used to study the nature of the ferromagnetic transition in single crystals of La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 and La_0.8Ca_0.2MnO_3, and polycrystalline samples of La_0.67Ca_0.33MnO_3 and La_5/8Ca_3/8MnO_3 where the naturally occurring O-16 can be replaced with the O-18 isotope. Small angle neutron scattering on the x=0.3 single crystal reveals a discontinuous change in the scattering at the Curie temperature for wave vectors below ~0.065 A^-1. Strong relaxation effects are observed for this domain scattering, for the magnetic order parameter, and for the quasielastic scattering, demonstrating that the transition is not continuous in nature. There is a large oxygen isotope effect observed for the T_C in the polycrystalline samples. For the optimally doped x=3/8 sample we observed T_C(O-16)=266.5 K and T_C(O-18)=261.5 K at 90% O-18 substitution. The temperature dependence of the spin-wave stiffness is found to be identical for the two samples despite changes in T_C. Hence, T_C is not solely determined by the magnetic subsystem, but instead the ferromagnetic phase is truncated by the formation of polarons which cause an abrupt transition to the paramagnetic, insulating state. Application of uniaxial stress in the x=0.3 single crystal sharply enhances the polaron scattering at room temperature. Measurements of the phonon density-of-states show only modest differences above and below T_C and between the two different isotopic samples.
