Evidence for the immobile bipolaron formation in the paramagnetic state of the magnetoresistive manganites

Recent research suggests that the charge carriers in the paramagnetic state of the magnetoresistive manganites are small polarons. Here we report studies of the oxygen-isotope effects on the intrinsic resistivity and thermoelectric power in several ferromagnetic manganites. The precise measurements of these isotope effects allow us to make a quantitative data analysis. Our results do not support a simple small-polaron model, but rather provide compelling evidence for the presence of small immobile bipolarons, i.e., pairs of small polarons. Since the bipolarons in the manganites are immobile, the present result alone appears not to give a positive support to the bipolaronic superconductivity theory for the copper-based perovskites.

Measurements of the absolute value of the penetration depth in high-$ T_c$ superconductors using a tunnel diode resonator

A method is presented to measure the absolute value of the London penetration depth, $λ$, from the frequency shift of a resonator. The technique involves coating a high-$T_c$ superconductor (HTSC) with film of low - Tc material of known thickness and penetration depth. The method is applied to measure London penetration depth in YBa2Cu3O{7-δ} (YBCO) Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+δ} (BSCCO) and Pr{1.85}Ce{0.15}CuO{4-δ}$ (PCCO). For YBCO and BSCCO, the values of $λ(0)$ are in agreement with the literature values. For PCCO $λ\approx 2790$ Å, reported for the first time.

Evidence for nodal quasiparticles in electron-doped cuprates from penetration depth measurements

The in-plane magnetic penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured down to 0.4 K in single crystals of electron-doped superconductors, Pr$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (PCCO) and Nd$_{1.85}$Ce$_{0.15}$CuO$_{4-δ}$ (NCCO). In PCCO, the superfluid density varies as $T^2$ from 0.025 up to roughly 0.3 $T/T_c$ suggestive of a d-wave state with impurities. In NCCO, $λ(T)$ shows a pronounced upturn for $T < 4$ K due to the paramagnetic contribution of Nd$^{3+}$ ions. Fits to an s-wave order parameter over the standard BCS range ($T/T_c$ = 0.32) limit any gap to less than $Δ_{min} (0)/T_c = 0.57$ in NCCO. For PCCO, the absence of paramagnetism permits a lower temperature fit and yields an upper limit of $Δ_{min} (0)/T_c = 0.2$.

Metallic and nonmetallic double perovskites: A case study of A$_2$FeReO$_6$ (A= Ca, Sr, Ba)

We have investigated the structure and electronic properties of ferrimagnetic double perovskites, A2FeReO6 (A= Ca, Sr, Ba). The A=Ba phase is cubic (Fm3m) and metallic, while the A=Ca phase is monoclinic (P21/n) and nonmetallic. 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy shows that iron is present mainly in the high-spin (S=5/2) Fe3+ state in the Ca compound, while it occurs in an intermediate state between high-spin Fe2+ and Fe3+ in the Ba compound. It is argued that a direct Re t2g - Re t2g interaction is the main cause for the metallic character of the Ba compound; the high covalency of Ca-O bonds and the monoclinic distortion (which lifts the degeneracy of t2g states) seem to disrupt the Re-Re interaction in the case of the Ca compound, making it non-metallic for the same electron count.

Anomalous field-dependent specific heat in charge-ordered Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ and La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$

We report low temperature specific heat measurements of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.5$) and La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ with and without applied magnetic field. An excess specific heat, $C^{\prime}(T)$, of non-magnetic origin associated with charge ordering is found for all the samples. A magnetic field sufficient to induce the transition from the charge-ordered state to the ferromagnetic metallic state does not completely remove the $C^{\prime}$ contribution. This suggests that the charge ordering is not completely destroyed by a "melting" magnetic field. In addition, the specific heat of the Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compounds exhibit a large contribution linear in temperature ($γT$) originating from magnetic and charge disorder.

Metal-insulator transition in CMR materials

We report on resistivity measurements in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ and Nd$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films in order to elucidate the underlying mechanism for the CMR behavior. The experimental results are analyzed in terms of quantum phase transition ideas to study the nature of the metal-insulator transition in manganese oxides. Resistivity curves as functions of magnetization for various temperatures show the absence of scaling behavior expected in a continuous quantum phase transition, which leads us to conclude that the observed metal-insulator transition is most likely a finite temperature crossover phenomenon.

Colossal electroresistance and electronic phase separation in mixed-valent manganites

The sensitivity of transport in CMR manganite to external fields is examined using a PZT-based field effect configuration with a La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 channel subjected to electric and magnetic fields, separately and in conjugation. We not only find a colossal electroresistance (CER) of ~76% at 4X10^5 V/cm, but also a remarkable complimentarity of this CER with the widely studied CMR. Specifically, the ERmax (MRmax) of the system is largely independent of the magnetic (electric) field biasing, and for equal conductivity values, the ER (MR) is lower (higher) for T Tp. The size and systematics of the effect strongly favor a percolative phase separation picture.

Oxygen isotope effects in high-quality thin films of manganites: Quantitative constraints on the physics of manganites

Oxygen isotope effects on the transport properties have been studied in high-quality epitaxial thin films of La_{0.75}Ca_{0.25}MnO_{3} and Nd_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. In the paramagnetic state, the resistivity can be well fitted by ρ(T) = (A/\sqrt{T})\exp(E_ρ/k_{B}T) with the parameters A and E_{a} depending strongly on the oxygen isotope mass. The resistivity below 80 K almost perfectly follows ρ= ρ_{o}+ Bω_{s}/\sinh^{2}(\hbarω_{s}/2k_{B}T) with \hbarω_{s}/k_{B} \sim 100 K. Both ρ_{o} and B increase by about 15(3)% upon raplacing $^{16}$O by $^{18}$O. The results provide quantitative constraints on the basic physics of manganites.

Temperature and field dependence of the phase separation, structure, and magnetic ordering in La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$, ($x=0.47$, 0.50, and 0.53)

Neutron powder diffraction measurements, combined with magnetization and resistivity data, have been carried out in the doped perovskite La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x=0.47$, 0.50, and 0.53) to elucidate the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of the system around the composition corresponding to an equal number of Mn3+ and Mn4+. At room temperature all three samples are paramagnetic and single phase, with crystallographic symmetry Pnma. The samples then all become ferromagnetic (FM) at $T_C\approx 265$ K. At $\sim 230$ K, however, a second distinct crystallographic phase (denoted A-II) begins to form. Initially the intrinsic widths of the peaks are quite large, but they narrow as the temperature decreases and the phase fraction increases, indicating microscopic coexistence. The fraction of the sample that exhibits the A-II phase increases with decreasing temperature and also increases with increasing Ca doping, but the transition never goes to completion to the lowest temperatures measured (5 K) and the two phases therefore coexist in this temperature-composition regime. Phase A-II orders antiferromagnetically (AFM) below a Néel temperature $T_N \approx 160$ K, with the CE-type magnetic structure. Resistivity measurements show that this phase is a conductor, while the CE phase is insulating. Application of magnetic fields up to 9 T progressively inhibits the formation of the A-II phase, but this suppression is path dependent, being much stronger for example if the sample is field-cooled compared to zero-field cooling and then applying the field. The H-T phase diagram obtained from the diffraction measurements is in good agreement with the results of magnetization and resistivity.

Magnetic penetration depth in electron-doped cuprates - evidence for gap nodes

The in-plane penetration depth λ(T) is measured in electron-doped single crystals Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4-x (NCCO) and Pr1.85Ce0.15CuO4-x (PCCO) using a 11 MHz LC resonator. In NCCO, λ(T) exhibits a minimum at 3.8 K and a pronounced upturn down to 0.4 K due to the paramagnetic contribution of Nd3+ ions. The London penetration depth contribution is linear in T. The paramagnetic contribution is absent in PCCO, where λ(T)~T^2 at low temperatures. Our results indicate the presence of nodes in the superconducting gap, i.e., non s-wave symmetry of the order parameter in electron-doped cuprates.

Two-phase behavior in strained thin films of hole-doped manganites

We present a study of the effect of biaxial strain on the electrical and magnetic properties of thin films of manganites. We observe that manganite films grown under biaxial compressive strain exhibit island growth morphology which leads to a non-uniform distribution of the strain. Transport and magnetic properties of these films suggest the coexistence of two different phases, a metallic ferromagnet and an insulating antiferromagnet. We suggest that the high strain regions are insulating while the low strain regions are metallic. In such non-uniformly strained samples, we observe a large magnetoresistance and a field-induced insulator to metal transition.

Temperature dependent scattering rate and optical mass of ferromagnetic metallic manganites

We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 and La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3. Transmission and reflection of thin films are measured in the infrared at temperatures from 10 - 150 K using Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The scattering rate and optical mass are obtained by fitting the far-infrared transmission to a Drude model. The scattering rate shows a T^2 dependence with temperature. The optical mass enhancement differs only slightly from specific heat results. In addition, we compare the infrared spectral weight to band structure calculations [M. Quijada et al., Phys. Rev. B 58, 16093 (1998)].

Relaxation effects in the charge-ordered state of La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$

We report an experimental study of the time dependence of the resistivity and magnetization of charge-ordered La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ under different thermal and magnetic field conditions. A relaxation with a stretched exponential time dependence has been observed at temperatures below the charge ordering temperature. A model using a hierarchical distribution of relaxation times can explain the data.

Effects of annealing and strain on La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} thin films: a new phase diagram in the ferromagnetic region

Oriented, single phase thin films of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} have been deposited onto (100)-oriented LaAlO_{3} (0.1<x<0.5) substrates using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique. While for some compositions the physical properties (transport and magnetization) of the as-grown films are higher than the bulk values, for other calcium contents the optimized properties are obtained only after annealing under oxygen. These data can be partly explained by changes in oxygen content, resulting in cationic vacancies and thus self-doping effects - accompanying structural changes, may be the cause of properties beyond the phase diagram. We propose a new phase diagram for (La_{1-x}Ca_{x})_{1-y}\square_{y}MnO_{3} (0.1<x<0.5) thin films.

Properties of the ferrimagnetic double-perovskite A_{2}FeReO_{6} (A=Ba and Ca)

Ceramics of A_{2}FeReO_{6} double-perovskite have been prepared and studied for A=Ba and Ca. Ba_{2}FeReO_{6} has a cubic structure (Fm3m) with $a\approx $8.0854(1) Åwhereas Ca_{2}FeReO_{6} has a distorted monoclinic symmetry with $a\approx 5.396(1) Å, b\approx 5.522(1) Å, c\approx 7.688(2) Å$ and $β=90.4^{\circ} (P21/n)$. The barium compound is metallic from 5 K to 385 K, i.e. no metal-insulator transition has been seen up to 385 K, and the calcium compound is semiconducting from 5 K to 385 K. Magnetization measurements show a ferrimagnetic behavior for both materials, with T_{c}=315 K for Ba_{2}FeReO_{6} and above 385 K for Ca_{2}FeReO_{6}. A specific heat measurement on the barium compound gave an electron density of states at the Fermi level, N(E_{F}) equal to 6.1$\times 10^{24} eV^{-1}mole^{-1}$. At 5 K, we observed a negative magnetoresistance of 10 % in a magnetic field of 5 T, but only for Ba_{2}FeReO_{6}. Electrical, thermal and magnetic properties are discussed and compared to the analogous compounds Sr_{2}Fe(Mo,Re)O_{6}.

The effect of substrate induced strain on the charge-ordering transition in Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} thin films

We report the synthesis and characterization of Nd_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}MnO_{3} thin films grown by the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique on 100 -oriented LaAlO_{3} substrates. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies show that the films are 101 -oriented, with a strained and quasi-relaxed component, the latter increasing with film thickness. We observe that transport properties are strongly dependent on the thickness of the films. Variable temperature XRD down to 100 K suggests that this is caused by substrate induced strain on the films.

Magnetoresistance of metallic perovskite oxide LaNiO$_{3-δ}$

We report a study of the magnetoresistance (MR) of the metallic perovskite oxide LaNiO$_{3-δ}$ as a function of the oxygen stoichiometry $δ$ ($δ\leq$ 0.14), magnetic field (H $\leq 6T$) and temperature (1.5K $\leq $ T $\leq $ 25K). We find a strong dependence of the nature of MR on the oxygen stoichiometry. The MR at low temperatures change from positive to negative as the sample becomes more oxygen deficient (i.e, $δ$ increases). Some of the samples which are more resistive, show a resistivity minima at $T_{min}$ $\approx$ 20K. We find that in these samples the MR is positive at T > $T_{min}$ and negative for T < $T_{min}$. We conclude that in the absence of strong magnetic interaction, the negative MR in these oxides can arise from weak localisation effects.
