Suppression of ferromagnetism and influence of disorder in silicon-substituted CeRh6Ge4

We report a study of isoelectronic chemical substitution in the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Upon silicon-doping, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of CeRh$_6$(Ge$_{1-x}$Si$_x$)$_4$ is continuously suppressed, and no transition is observed beyond $x_c$$\approx$0.125. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with $C/T \propto$log($T^*/T$) is observed close to $x_c$, indicating the existence of strong quantum fluctuations, while the $T$-linear behavior observed upon pressurizing the parent compound is absent in the resistivity, which appears to be a consequence of the disorder induced by silicon doping. Our findings provide evidence for the role played by disorder on the unusual ferromagnetic quantum criticality in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, and provides further evidence for understanding the origin of this behavior.

High-quality strong lens candidates in the final Kilo Degree survey footprint

We present 97 new high-quality strong lensing candidates found in the final $\sim 350\,\rm deg^2$, that completed the full $\sim 1350\,\rm deg^2$ area of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Together with our previous findings, the final list of high-quality candidates from KiDS sums up to 268 systems. The new sample is assembled using a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier applied to $r$-band (best seeing) and $g,~r,~i$ color-composited images separately. This optimizes the complementarity of the morphology and color information on the identification of strong lensing candidates. We apply the new classifiers to a sample of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and a sample of bright galaxies (BGs) and select candidates that received a high probability to be a lens from the CNN ($P_{\rm CNN}$). In particular, setting $P_{\rm CNN}>0.8$ for the LRGs, the $1$-band CNN predicts 1213 candidates, while the $3$-band classifier yields 1299 candidates, with only $\sim$30\% overlap. For the BGs, in order to minimize the false positives, we adopt a more conservative threshold, $P_{\rm CNN} >0.9$, for both CNN classifiers. This results in 3740 newly selected objects. The candidates from the two samples are visually inspected by 7 co-authors to finally select 97 "high-quality" lens candidates which received mean scores larger than 6 (on a scale from 0 to 10). We finally discuss the effect of the seeing on the accuracy of CNN classification and possible avenues to increase the efficiency of multi-band classifiers, in preparation of next-generation surveys from ground and space.

The Fornax Cluster VLT Spectroscopic Survey IV -- Cold kinematical substructures in the Fornax core from COSTA

The COld STream finder Algorithm (COSTA) is a novel algorithm to find streams in the phase space of planetary nebulae (PNe) and globular cluster (GCs) populations. COSTA isolates groups of particles with small velocity dispersion, using an iterative sigma-clipping over a defined number of neighbor particles. We have applied COSTA to a catalog of about 2000 PNe and GCs from the Fornax Cluster VLT Spectroscopic Survey (FVSS), within 200 kpc from the cluster core, to detect cold substructures and characterize their kinematics. We have found 13 cold substructures, with velocity dispersion ranging from 20 to 100 kms^{-1}, which are likely associated either to large galaxies or to ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) galaxies in the Fornax core. These streams show a clear correlation of their luminosity with the internal velocity dispersion, and their surface brightness with size and distance from the cluster center that are compatible with dissipative processes producing them. However, we cannot exclude that some of these substructures have formed by violent relaxation of massive satellites finally merged into the central galaxy. Among these substructures we have: a stream connecting NGC1387 to the central galaxy, NGC1399, previously reported in literature; a new giant stream produced by the interaction of NGC1382 with NGC1380 and possibly NGC1381; a series of streams kinematically connected to nearby ultra compact dwarf galaxies; clumps of tracers with no clear kinematical association to close cluster members. We show evidence for a variety of cold substructure predicted in simulations. Most of the streams are kinematically connected to UCDs, supporting the scenario that they can be remnants of disrupted dwarf systems. [abridged]

Low dephasing and robust micromagnet designs for silicon spin qubits

Using micromagnets to enable electron spin manipulation in silicon qubits has emerged as a very popular method, enabling single-qubit gate fidelities larger than 99:9%. However, these micromagnets also apply stray magnetic field gradients onto the qubits, making the spin states susceptible to electric field noise and limiting their coherence times. We describe here a magnet design that minimizes qubit dephasing, while allowing for fast qubit control and addressability. Specifically, we design and optimize magnet dimensions and position relative to the quantum dots, minimizing dephasing from magnetic field gradients. The micromagnet-induced dephasing rates with this design are up to 3-orders of magnitude lower than state-of-the-art implementations, allowing for long coherence times. This design is robust against fabrication errors, and can be combined with a wide variety of silicon qubit device geometries, thereby allowing exploration of coherence limiting factors and novel upscaling approaches.

Uniform Spin Qubit Devices in an All-Silicon 300 mm Integrated Process

Larger arrays of electron spin qubits require radical improvements in fabrication and device uniformity. Here we demonstrate excellent qubit device uniformity and tunability from 300K down to mK temperatures. This is achieved, for the first time, by integrating an overlapping polycrystalline silicon-based gate stack in an 'all-Silicon' and lithographically flexible 300mm flow. Low-disorder Si/SiO$_2$ is proved by a 10K Hall mobility of $1.5 \cdot 10^4$ $cm^2$/Vs. Well-controlled sensors with low charge noise (3.6 $μ$eV/$\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ at 1 Hz) are used for charge sensing down to the last electron. We demonstrate excellent and reproducible interdot coupling control over nearly 2 decades (2-100 GHz). We show spin manipulation and single-shot spin readout, extracting a valley splitting energy of around 150 $μ$eV. These low-disorder, uniform qubit devices and 300mm fab integration pave the way for fast scale-up to large quantum processors.

Evolution of the metallic state of LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices measured by $^8$Li $β$-detected NMR

Using ion-implanted $^8$Li $β$-detected NMR, we study the evolution of the correlated metallic state of LaNiO$_3$ in a series of LaNiO$_3$/LaAlO$_3$ superlattices as a function of bilayer thickness. Spin-lattice relaxation measurements in an applied field of 6.55 T reveal two equal amplitude components: one with metallic ($T$-linear) $1/T_{1}$, and a second with a more complex $T$-dependence. The metallic character of the slow relaxing component is only weakly affected by the LaNiO$_3$ thickness, while the fast component is much more sensitive, exhibiting the opposite temperature dependence (increasing towards low $T$) in the thinnest, most magnetic samples. The origin of this bipartite relaxation is discussed.

Effect of lattice excitations on transient near edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Time-dependent and constituent-specific spectral changes in soft near edge X-ray spectroscopy (XAS) of an [Fe/MgO]$_8$ metal/insulator heterostructure upon laser excitation are analyzed at the O K-edge with picosecond time resolution. The oxygen absorption edge of the insulator features a uniform intensity decrease of the fine structure at elevated phononic temperatures, which can be quantified by a simple simulation and fitting procedure presented here. Combining X-ray absorption spectroscopy with ultrafast electron diffraction measurements and ab initio calculations demonstrate that the transient intensity changes in XAS can be assigned to a transient lattice temperature. Thus, the sensitivity of transient near edge XAS to phonons is demonstrated.

The 450 days X-ray monitoring of the changing-look AGN 1ES 1927+654

1ES 1927+654 is a nearby active galactic nucleus (AGN) which underwent a changing-look event in early 2018, developing prominent broad Balmer lines which were absent in previous observations. We have followed up this object in the X-rays with an ongoing campaign that started in May 2018, and that includes 265 NICER (for a total of 678ks) and 14 Swift/XRT (26ks) observations, as well as three simultaneous XMM-Newton/NuSTAR (158/169 ks) exposures. In the X-rays, 1ES 1927+654 shows a behaviour unlike any previously known AGN. The source is extremely variable both in spectral shape and flux, and does not show any correlation between X-ray and UV flux on timescales of hours or weeks/months. After the outburst the power-law component almost completely disappeared, and the source showed an extremely soft continuum dominated by a blackbody component. The temperature of the blackbody increases with the luminosity, going from $kT\sim 80$eV (for a 0.3--2keV luminosity of $L_{0.3-2}\sim 10^{41.5}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$) to $\sim 200$eV (for $L_{0.3-2}\sim 10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$). The spectra show evidence of ionized outflows, and of a prominent feature at $\sim 1$keV, which can be reproduced by a broad emission line. The unique characteristics of 1ES 1927+654 in the X-ray band suggest that it belongs to a new type of changing-look AGN. Future X-ray surveys might detect several more objects with similar properties.

A flexible 300 mm integrated Si MOS platform for electron- and hole-spin qubits exploration

We report on a flexible 300 mm process that optimally combines optical and electron beam lithography to fabricate silicon spin qubits. It enables on-the-fly layout design modifications while allowing devices with either n- or p-type ohmic implants, a pitch smaller than 100 nm, and uniform critical dimensions down to 30 nm with a standard deviation ~ 1.6 nm. Various n- and p-type qubits are characterized in a dilution refrigerator at temperatures ~ 10 mK. Electrical measurements demonstrate well-defined quantum dots, tunable tunnel couplings, and coherent spin control, which are essential requirements for the implementation of a large-scale quantum processor.

Discovery of two Einstein crosses from massive post--blue nugget galaxies at z>1 in KiDS

We report the discovery of two Einstein Crosses (ECs) in the footprint of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS): KIDS J232940-340922 and KIDS J122456+005048. Using integral field spectroscopy from MUSE@VLT, we confirm their gravitational-lens nature. In both cases, the four spectra of the source clearly show a prominence of absorption features, hence revealing an evolved stellar population with little star formation. The lensing model of the two systems, assuming a singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) with external shear, shows that: 1) the two crosses, located at redshift $z=0.38$ and 0.24, have Einstein radius $R_{\rm E}=5.2$ kpc and 5.4 kpc, respectively; 2) their projected dark matter fractions inside the half effective radius are 0.60 and 0.56 (Chabrier IMF); 3) the sources are ultra-compact galaxies, $R_{\rm e}\sim0.9$ kpc (at redshift $z_{\rm s}=1.59$) and $R_{\rm e}\sim0.5$ kpc ($z_{\rm s}=1.10$), respectively. These results are unaffected by the underlying mass density assumption. Due to size, blue color and absorption-dominated spectra, corroborated by low specific star-formation rates derived from optical-NIR spectral energy distribution fitting, we argue that the two lensed sources in these ECs are blue nuggets migrating toward their quenching phase.

Decay Spectroscopy of $^{129}$Cd

Excited states of $^{129}$In populated following the $β$-decay of $^{129}$Cd were experimentally studied with the GRIFFIN spectrometer at the ISAC facility of TRIUMF, Canada. A 480-MeV proton beam was impinged on a uranium carbide target and $^{129}$Cd was extracted using the Ion Guide Laser Ion Source (IG-LIS). $β$- and $γ$-rays following the decay of $^{129}$Cd were detected with the GRIFFIN spectrometer comprising the plastic scintillator SCEPTAR and 16 high-purity germanium (HPGe) clover-type detectors. %, along with the $β$-particles were detected with SCEPTAR. From the $β$-$γ$-$γ$ coincidence analysis, 32 new transitions and 7 new excited states were established, expanding the previously known level scheme of $^{129}$In. The $\log ft$ values deduced from the $β$-feeding intensities suggest that some of the high-lying states were populated by the $ν0 g_{7/2} \rightarrow π0 g_{9/2}$ allowed Gamow-Teller (GT) transition, which indicates that the allowed GT transition is more dominant in the $^{129}$Cd decay than previously reported. Observation of fragmented Gamow-Teller strengths is consistent with theoretical calculations.

Resonance Laser Ionization Spectroscopy of Selenium

Photoionization spectra of Se have been studied by step-wise resonance laser ionization. The Rydberg series 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^4$S)np $^3$P$_{0,1,2}$ and 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^4$S)np $^5$P$_{1,2,3}$ were measured via different excitation schemes. Using the Rydberg series 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^4$S)np $^3$P$_2$ with n=15-33, the ionization potential of Se was determined with improved precision to 76658.15(2)$_{stat}$(4)$_{sys}$ cm$^{-1}$, which resolved the discrepancy in previous literatures. Autoionizing (AI) spectra between the IP and two neighboring converging limits of the Se ionic states 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^2$D$_{3/2}$) and 4s$^2$4p$^3$($^2$D$_{5/2}$) were obtained. In total eight AI Rydberg series have been observed, measured and assigned.

The destruction and recreation of the X-ray corona in a changing-look Active Galactic Nucleus

We present the drastic transformation of the X-ray properties of the active galactic nucleus 1ES 1927+654, following a changing-look event. After the optical/UV outburst the power-law component, produced in the X-ray corona, disappeared, and the spectrum of 1ES 1927+65 instead became dominated by a blackbody component ($kT\sim 80-120$ eV). This implies that the X-ray corona, ubiquitously found in AGN, was destroyed in the event. Our dense $\sim 450$ day long X-ray monitoring shows that the source is extremely variable in the X-ray band. On long time scales the source varies up to $\sim 4$ dex in $\sim 100$ days, while on short timescales up to $\sim2$ dex in $\sim 8$ hours. The luminosity of the source is found to first show a strong dip down to $\sim 10^{40}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$, and then a constant increase in luminosity to levels exceeding the pre-outburst level $\gtrsim $300 days after the optical event detection, rising up asymptotically to $\sim 2\times10^{44}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$. As the X-ray luminosity of the source increases, the X-ray corona is recreated, and a very steep power-law component ($Γ\simeq 3$) reappears, and dominates the emission for 0.3-2 keV luminosities $\gtrsim 10^{43.7}\rm\,erg\,s^{-1}$, $\sim 300$ days after the beginning of the event. We discuss possible origins of this event, and speculate that our observations could be explained by the interaction between the accretion flow and debris from a tidally disrupted star. Our results show that changing-look events can be associated with dramatic and rapid transformations of the innermost regions of accreting SMBHs.

New high-quality strong lens candidates with deep learning in the Kilo Degree Survey

We report new high-quality galaxy scale strong lens candidates found in the Kilo Degree Survey data release 4 using Machine Learning. We have developed a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier to search for gravitational arcs, following the prescription by \cite{2019MNRAS.484.3879P} and using only $r-$band images. We have applied the CNN to two "predictive samples": a Luminous red galaxy (LRG) and a "bright galaxy" (BG) sample ($r<21$). We have found 286 new high probability candidates, 133 from the LRG sample and 153 from the BG sample. We have then ranked these candidates based on a value that combines the CNN likelihood to be a lens and the human score resulting from visual inspection (P-value) and we present here the highest 82 ranked candidates with P-values $\ge 0.5$. All these high-quality candidates have obvious arc or point-like features around the central red defector. Moreover, we define the best 26 objects, all with scores P-values $\ge 0.7$ as a "golden sample" of candidates. This sample is expected to contain very few false positives and thus it is suitable for follow-up observations. The new lens candidates come partially from the the more extended footprint adopted here with respect to the previous analyses, partially from a larger predictive sample (also including the BG sample). These results show that machine learning tools are very promising to find strong lenses in large surveys and more candidates that can be found by enlarging the predictive samples beyond the standard assumption of LRGs. In the future, we plan to apply our CNN to the data from next-generation surveys such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, Euclid, and the Chinese Space Station Optical Survey.

Evolution of charge density wave order and superconductivity under pressure in LaPt$_2$Si$_2$

We report measurements of the electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility of single crystalline LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ under pressure, in order to investigate the interplay of superconductivity and CDW order. LaPt$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits a first order phase transition from a tetragonal to orthorhombic structure, accompanied by the onset of CDW order below $T_{\rm{CDW}}$ = 76 K, while superconductivity occurs at a lower temperature of $T_{\rm{c}}$ = 1.87 K. We find that the application of pressure initially suppresses the CDW transition, but enhances $T_{\rm{c}}$. At pressures above 2.4 GPa, CDW order vanishes, while both $T_{\rm{c}}$ and the resistivity $A$-coefficient reach a maximum value around this pressure. Our results suggest that the occurrence of a superconducting dome can be accounted for within the framework of BCS theory, where there is a maximum in the density of states upon the closure of the CDW gap.

Production of clean rare isotope beams at TRIUMF Ion guide laser ion source

Hot cavity resonant ionization laser ion sources (RILIS) provide a multitude of radioactive ion beams with high ionization efficiency and element selective ionization. However, in hot cavity RILIS there still remains isobaric contaminations in the extracted beam from surface ionized species. An ion guide-laser ion source (IG-LIS) has been implemented that decouples the hot isotope production region from the laser ionization volume. A number of IG-LIS runs have been conducted to provide isobar free radioactive ion beams for experiments. Isobar suppression of up to 106 has been achieved, however, IG-LIS still suffers from an intensity loss of 50-100X as compared to hot cavity RILIS. Operating parameters for IG-LIS are being optimized and design improvements are being implemented into the prototype for robust and efficient on-line operation. Recent SIMION ion optics simulation results and the ongoing development status of the IG-LIS are presented.

Fusion reactions in the $^9$Be + $^{197}$Au system above the Coulomb barrier

The cross sections of complete fusion and incomplete fusion for the $ ^{9} $Be + $ ^{197} $Au system, at energies not too much above the Coulomb barrier, were measured for the first time. The online activation followed by offline $γ$-ray spectroscopy method was used for the derivation of the cross sections. A slightly higher value of ICF/TF ratio has been observed, compared to other systems reported in the literature with $ ^{9} $Be beam. The experimental data were compared with coupled channel calculations without taking into account the coupling of the breakup channel, and experimental data of other reaction systems with weakly bound projectiles. A complete fusion suppression of about 40\% was found for the $ ^{9} $Be + $ ^{197} $Au system, at energies above the barrier, whereas the total fusion cross sections are in agreement with the calculations.

Demonstration of nonstoquastic Hamiltonian in coupled superconducting flux qubits

Quantum annealing (QA) is a heuristic algorithm for finding low-energy configurations of a system, with applications in optimization, machine learning, and quantum simulation. Up to now, all implementations of QA have been limited to qubits coupled via a single degree of freedom. This gives rise to a stoquastic Hamiltonian that has no sign problem in quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations. In this paper, we report implementation and measurements of two superconducting flux qubits coupled via two canonically conjugate degrees of freedom (charge and flux) to achieve a nonstoquastic Hamiltonian. Such coupling can enhance performance of QA processors, extend the range of quantum simulations. We perform microwave spectroscopy to extract circuit parameters and show that the charge coupling manifests itself as a YY interaction in the computational basis. We observe destructive interference in quantum coherent oscillations between the computational basis states of the two-qubit system. Finally, we show that the extracted Hamiltonian is nonstoquastic over a wide range of parameters.
