Statistical mechanics of classical and quantum computational complexity

The quest for quantum computers is motivated by their potential for solving problems that defy existing, classical, computers. The theory of computational complexity, one of the crown jewels of computer science, provides a rigorous framework for classifying the hardness of problems according to the computational resources, most notably time, needed to solve them. Its extension to quantum computers allows the relative power of quantum computers to be analyzed. This framework identifies families of problems which are likely hard for classical computers (``NP-complete'') and those which are likely hard for quantum computers (``QMA-complete'') by indirect methods. That is, they identify problems of comparable worst-case difficulty without directly determining the individual hardness of any given instance. Statistical mechanical methods can be used to complement this classification by directly extracting information about particular families of instances---typically those that involve optimization---by studying random ensembles of them. These pose unusual and interesting (quantum) statistical mechanical questions and the results shed light on the difficulty of problems for large classes of algorithms as well as providing a window on the contrast between typical and worst case complexity. In these lecture notes we present an introduction to this set of ideas with older work on classical satisfiability and recent work on quantum satisfiability as primary examples. We also touch on the connection of computational hardness with the physical notion of glassiness.

Magnetic multipole analysis of kagome and artificial ice dipolar arrays

We analyse an array of linearly extended monodomain dipoles forming square and kagome lattices. We find that its phase diagram contains two (distinct) finite-entropy kagome ice regimes - one disordered, one algebraic - as well as a low-temperature ordered phase. In the limit of the islands almost touching, we find a staircase of corresponding entropy plateaux, which is analytically captured by a theory based on magnetic charges. For the case of a modified square ice array, we show that the charges ('monopoles') are excitations experiencing two distinct Coulomb interactions: a magnetic 'three-dimensional' one as well as a logarithmic `two dimensional' one of entropic origin.

On product, generic and random generic quantum satisfiability

We report a cluster of results on k-QSAT, the problem of quantum satisfiability for k-qubit projectors which generalizes classical satisfiability with k-bit clauses to the quantum setting. First we define the NP-complete problem of product satisfiability and give a geometrical criterion for deciding when a QSAT interaction graph is product satisfiable with positive probability. We show that the same criterion suffices to establish quantum satisfiability for all projectors. Second, we apply these results to the random graph ensemble with generic projectors and obtain improved lower bounds on the location of the SAT--unSAT transition. Third, we present numerical results on random, generic satisfiability which provide estimates for the location of the transition for k=3 and k=4 and mild evidence for the existence of a phase which is satisfiable by entangled states alone.

Quasiparticle interference in the spin-density wave phase of iron-based superconductors

We propose an explanation for the electronic nematic state observed recently in parent iron-based superconductors [T.-M. Chuang et al., Science 327, 181 (2010)]. We argue that the quasi-one-dimensional nanostructure identified in the quasiparticle interference (QPI) is a consequence of the interplay of the magnetic ($π$, 0) spin-density wave (SDW) order with the underlying electronic structure. We show that the evolution of the QPI peaks largely reflects quasiparticle scattering between electronic bands involved in the SDW formation. Because of the ellipticity of the electron pocket and the fact that only one of the electron pockets is involved in the SDW, the resulting QPI has a pronounced one-dimensional structure. We further predict that the QPI crosses over to two-dimensionality on an energy scale, set by the SDW gap, which we estimate from neutron scattering data to be around 90 meV.

Unconventional magnets in external magnetic fields

This short review surveys phenomena observed when a magnetic field is applied to a system of localised spins on a lattice. Its focus is on frustrated magnets in dimension $d \geq 2$. The interplay of field and entropy is illustrated in the context of their unusual magnetocaloric properties, where field-tuned degeneracies assert themselves. Magnetisation plateaux can reveal the physics of fluctuations, with unusual excitations (such as local modes, extended string defects or monopoles) involved in plateau termination. Field-tuning lattice geometry is the final topic, where mechanisms for dimensional reduction and conversion between different lattice types are discussed.

Irrational charge from topological order

Topological or deconfined phases of matter exhibit emergent gauge fields and quasiparticles that carry a corresponding gauge charge. In systems with an intrinsic conserved U(1) charge, such as all electronic systems where the Coulombic charge plays this role, these quasiparticles are also characterized by their intrinsic charge. We show that one can take advantage of the topological order fairly generally to produce periodic Hamiltonians which endow the quasiparticles with continuously variable, generically irrational, intrinsic charges. Examples include various topologically ordered lattice models, the three dimensional RVB liquid on bipartite lattices as well as water and spin ice. By contrast, the gauge charges of the quasiparticles retain their quantized values.

Disorder in a quantum spin liquid: flux binding and local moment formation

We study the consequences of disorder in the Kitaev honeycomb model, considering both site dilution and exchange randomness. We show that a single vacancy binds a flux and induces a local moment. This moment is polarised by an applied field $h$: in the gapless phase, for small $h$ the local susceptibility diverges as $χ(h)\sim\ln(1/h)$; for a pair of nearby vacancies on the same sublattice, this even increases to $χ(h)\sim1/(h[\ln(1/h)]^{3/2})$. By contrast, weak exchange randomness does not qualitatively alter the susceptibility but has its signature in the heat capacity, which in the gapless phase is power law in temperature with an exponent dependent on disorder strength.

Spin ice under pressure: symmetry enhancement and infinite order multicriticality

We study the low-temperature behaviour of spin ice when uniaxial pressure induces a tetragonal distortion. There is a phase transition between a Coulomb liquid and a fully magnetised phase. Unusually, it combines features of discontinuous and continuous transitions: the order parameter exhibits a jump, but this is accompanied by a divergent susceptibility and vanishing domain wall tension. All these aspects can be understood as a consequence of an emergent SU(2) symmetry at the critical point. We map out a possible experimental realisation.

Thermal quenches in spin ice

We study the diffusion annihilation process which occurs when spin ice is quenched from a high temperature paramagnetic phase deep into the spin ice regime, where the excitations -- magnetic monopoles -- are sparse. We find that due to the Coulomb interaction between the monopoles, a dynamical arrest occurs, in which `non-universal' lattice-scale constraints impede the complete decay of charge fluctuations. This phenomenon is outside the reach of universal mean-field theory for a two-component Coulomb liquid. We identify the relevant timescales for the dynamical arrest and propose an experiment for detecting monopoles and their dynamics in spin ice based on this non-equilibrium phenomenon.

Finite-rate quenches of site bias in the Bose-Hubbard dimer

For a Bose-Hubbard dimer, we study quenches of the site energy imbalance, taking a highly asymmetric Hamiltonian to a fully symmetric one. The ramp is carried out over a finite time that interpolates between the instantaneous and adiabatic limits. We provide results for the excess energy of the final state compared to the ground state energy of the final Hamiltonian, as a function of the quench rate. This excess energy serves as the analog of the defect density that is considered in the Kibble-Zurek picture of ramps across phase transitions. We also examine the fate of quantum `self-trapping' when the ramp is not instantaneous.

Theory of itinerant magnetic excitations in the SDW phase of iron-based superconductors

We argue that salient experimental features of the magnetic excitations in the SDW phase of iron-based superconductors can be understood within an itinerant model. We identify a minimal itinerant model and use a multi-band RPA treatment of the dynamical spin susceptibility. Weakly-damped spin-waves are found near the ordering momentum and it is shown how they dissolve into the particle-hole continuum. We show that ellipticity of the electron bands accounts for the anisotropy of the spin waves along different crystallographic directions and the gap at the momentum conjugated to the ordering one. We argue that our theory agrees well with the neutron scattering data.

Low-temperature properties of the Hubbard model on highly frustrated one-dimensional lattices

We consider the repulsive Hubbard model on three highly frustrated one-dimensional lattices -- sawtooth chain and two kagomé chains -- with completely dispersionless (flat) lowest single-electron bands. We construct the complete manifold of {\em exact many-electron} ground states at low electron fillings and calculate the degeneracy of these states. As a result, we obtain closed-form expressions for low-temperature thermodynamic quantities around a particular value of the chemical potential $μ_0$. We discuss specific features of thermodynamic quantities of these ground-state ensembles such as residual entropy, an extra low-temperature peak in the specific heat, and the existence of ferromagnetism and paramagnetism. We confirm our analytical results by comparison with exact diagonalization data for finite systems.

Phase transitions and random quantum satisfiability

Alongside the effort underway to build quantum computers, it is important to better understand which classes of problems they will find easy and which others even they will find intractable. We study random ensembles of the QMA$_1$-complete quantum satisfiability (QSAT) problem introduced by Bravyi. QSAT appropriately generalizes the NP-complete classical satisfiability (SAT) problem. We show that, as the density of clauses/projectors is varied, the ensembles exhibit quantum phase transitions between phases that are satisfiable and unsatisfiable. Remarkably, almost all instances of QSAT for any hypergraph exhibit the same dimension of the satisfying manifold. This establishes the QSAT decision problem as equivalent to a, potentially new, graph theoretic problem and that the hardest typical instances are likely to be localized in a bounded range of clause density.

The Kasteleyn transition in three dimensions: spin ice in a [100] field

We discuss the nearest neighbour spin ice model in the presence of a magnetic field placed along the cubic [100] direction. As recently shown in Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 067207, 2008, the symmetry sustaining ordering transition observed at low temperature is a three dimensional Kasteleyn transition. We confirm this with numerical data using a non-local algorithm that conserves the topological constraints at low temperature and from analytic calculations from a Bethe lattice of corner sharing tetrahedra . We present a thermodynamic description of the Kasteleyn transition and discuss the relevance of our results to recent neutron scattering experiments on spin ice materials.

Entanglement Skyrmions in multicomponent quantum Hall systems

We discuss charged topological spin textures in quantum Hall ferromagnets in which the electrons carry a pseudospin as well as the usual spin degree of freedom, as is the case in bilayer GaAs or monolayer graphene samples. We develop a theory which treats spin and pseudospin on a manifestly equal footing, which may also be of help in visualizing the relevant spin textures. We in particular consider the entanglement of spin and pseudospin in the presence of realistic anisotropies. An entanglement operator is introduced which generates families of degenerate Skyrmions with differing entanglement properties. We propose a local characterization of the latter, and touch on the role entangled Skyrmions play in the nuclear relaxation time of quantum Hall ferromagnets.

Mixed Columnar-Plaquette Crystal of correlated fermions on the 2D pyrochlore lattice at fractional filling

We study a model of strongly correlated S=1/2 fermions on the planar pyrochlore, or checkerboard, lattice, at fractional (1/8) filling. Starting with the extended Hubbard model in the limit of strong Coulomb repulsion, low-energy configurations can be mapped onto hard-core dimer configurations whose dimers carry a spin degree of freedom. An effective Hamiltonian similar to the kinetic term of a quantum dimer model on the square lattice which rotates two parallel dimers (in a spin-singlet configuration) by 90 degrees naturally emerges. We also introduce an additional term in the Hamiltonian, a generalized dimer plaquette interaction, in order to realize a closer analogy to the latter model. For a strong dimer plaquette attraction stabilizing a columnar phase, a spontaneous dimerization takes place in the direction of the columns of (spin-carrying) dimers. Using exact diagonalizations of two-dimensional periodic clusters, the analysis of the low-energy spectrum and of several types of correlation functions gives indeed evidence for a new type of lattice symmetry breaking phase, the eight-fold degenerate Mixed Columnar-Plaquette Crystal, and for a transition from this phase to a Resonating-Singlet-Pair Crystal (found in previous studies) which restores the rotational symmetry of the lattice. Similar conclusions and phase diagram are also reached from a simple variational approach.

Partial order from disorder in a classical pyrochlore antiferromagnet

We investigate theoretically the phase diagram of a classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice perturbed by a weak second-neighbor interaction J_2. The huge ground state degeneracy of the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg spins is lifted by J_2 and a magnetically ordered ground state sets in upon approaching zero temperature. We have found a new, partially ordered phase with collinear spins at finite temperatures for a ferromagnetic J_2. In addition to a large nematic order parameter, this intermediate phase also exhibits a layered structure and a bond order that breaks the sublattice symmetry. Thermodynamic phase boundaries separating it from the fully disordered and magnetically ordered states scale as 1.87 J_2 S^2 and 0.26 J_2 S^2 in the limit of small J_2. The phase transitions are discontinuous. We analytically examine the local stability of the collinear state and obtain a boundary T ~ J_2^2/J_1 in agreement with Monte Carlo simulations.

These lecture notes aim to provide a self-contained, pedagogical introduction to the physics of local constraints, fractionalisation and topological liquids organised around the Rokhsar-Kivelson quantum dimer model. Topics and phenomena covered include emergent photons, SU(2) invariant spin liquids, valence-bond solids and Cantor deconfinement, along with an elementary introduction to the underlying theoretical models and methods.
