Chirality-resolved spectroscopy of Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon states in multiband FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ superconductors

We employ terahertz Faraday magneto-optical spectroscopy to probe the relaxation dynamics of quantized helical Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon (CdGM) states in epitaxial FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ thin films, nodeless multiband superconductors with short coherence lengths in the moderately clean limit. By exploiting polarization-selective optical transitions, we directly resolve the helicity and band origin of vortex-core quasiparticles. We observe long-lived CdGM resonances with opposite circular polarizations for electron- and hole-like bands. This enables independent, band-resolved determination of quasiparticle lifetimes, vortex masses, coherence lengths, and upper critical fields, and reveals their systematic evolution with isovalent substitution. The results establish terahertz magneto-optics as a direct probe of helical vortex-core excitations and provide dynamical evidence for multiband CdGM states in iron-based superconductors.

Modified Martin-Puplett interferometer for magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements at sub-THz frequencies

We present magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) spectrometer based on a modified Martin-Puplett interferometer, utilizing continuous wave sub-THz low-power radiation in broad frequency range. This spectrometer is capable of measuring the frequency dependence of the MOKE response function, both the Kerr rotation and ellipticity, simultaneously with sub-milliradian accuracy without the need for reference measurement. The instrument's versatility allow it to be coupled to a cryostat with optical windows enabling studies of a variety of quantum materials such as unconventional superconductors, two-dimensional electron gas systems, quantum magnets, and other system showing optical Hall response, at sub-Kelvin temperatures and in high magnetic fields. We demonstrate the functionality of the MOKE spectrometer using an undoped InSb wafer as a test sample.

Laser Transmission Studies with Magnetic Nanofluids

Transmission of He-Ne (632 nm, 10 mW) Gaussian laser beam through Hexane and Water based magnetic nanofluids containing Fe3O4 nanoparticles show strong non-linear and magneto-optical effects. Application of external magnetic field (up to 1.7 Wb/m2) perpendicular to the incident laser beam produces a change in forward scattered pattern of the incident laser beam. Dependence of forward scattered patterns in presence of external magnetic field has been studied. Image processing has been carried out to understand spatial distribution of the forward scattered patterns and temporal evolution of patterns involving particle image velocimetry technique. Change in non-linear refractive index is estimated for samples showing self-diffraction arising from higher order non-linear optical effect. Observed effects are useful for understanding light scattering from magnetic nanofluids and developing optofluidic devices and sensors.

Anomalous magnetic and transport properties of La(0.8-x)Eu(x)Sr0.2MnO3 (0.04 l.e. x l.e. 0.36) compounds

Anomalous magnetic and transport properties observed in the La0.8-xEuxSr0.2MnO3 (0.04 l.e x l.e. 0.36) compounds are presented in this paper. The Curie temperature (TC) decreases from 260 K for x = 0.04 to 188 K for x = 0.16 and surprisingly thereafter increases for higher Eu concentrations (x > 0.16) and becomes nearly constant ~230 K. Resistivity increases with Eu concentration up to x = 0.16 but decreases for higher Eu concentration (x > 0.16). In the magnetoresistance data, in addition to a peak corresponding to the insulator-metal transition at (TI-M1), a second peak is also observed at a relatively lower temperature, (TI-M2). Both TI-M1 and TI-M2 follow the same trend as TC. The unique variation of TC and magnetoresistance is explained on the basis of structure and disorder correlated to microscopic electronic phase segregation. The studies with the existing studies also point to the universibility of this consideration.

Magnetization and heat capacity studies of double perovskite compounds Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6

Here we report the magnetic and heat capacity studies of the double perovskite com-pounds Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6. Antiferromagnetic transitions are inferred at 54 K and 47 K in Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6, respectively in the magnetization measure-ments. Heat capacity measurements show large jumps at the corresponding temperatures and confirm the bulk magnetic ordering. Both the measurements provide clear indication of the ordering of the rare earth moments also along with the Ruthenium moments. How-ever, the heat capacity results suggest that the ordering of rare earth magnetic moments is spread over a large temperature range and is affected by a large crystal field effect on Ru and rare earth ions. The anomaly observed in the magnetization measurements at 42 K (below the magnetic ordering) in Ba2SmRuO6 is discerned as a reorientation of Sm3+ moments

200 MeV Ag+15 ion irradiation created columnar defects and enhanced critical current density of La-2125 type superconducting thin films

We have deposited c-axis oriented thin films of La1.5Dy0.5CaBa2Cu5Oz (La-2125) tetragonal superconductor on LaAlO3 (001) by Pulsed Laser Deposition. These films were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag+15 ions. Atomic Force Microscopy and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis indicate that the irradiation has created columnar defects along the entire thickness (2000 A) of these films. With ion irradiation up to 1*10^11 ions/cm2, the critical current density (Jc(H)) is found to enhance by almost five folds, which is attributed to the augmented flux pinning by the columnar defects. A further increase in irradiation to 1*10^12 ions/cm2 causes reduction in Jc(H) due to distorted morphology of the film. Our work shows that the enhancement in Jc (H) of the irradiated La-2125 film is comparable to that in irradiated RE-123. Also, as the La-2125 type films have greater chemical stability than RE-123 (RE = rare earth ion), La-2125 type superconductors are potential candidates for applications. Interesting to note that there are partial flux jumps observed to occur symmetrically in the magnetic hysteresis of irradiated La-2125 thin films with enhanced Jc(H).

Magnetic Properties of Ternary Gallides of type RNi4Ga (R = Rare earths)

The magnetic properties of RNi4Ga (R = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm and Lu) compounds have been investigated. These compounds form in a hexagonal CaCu5 type structure with a space group P6/mmm. Compounds with the magnetic rare earths, R = Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er and Tm, undergo a ferromagnetic transition at 5 K, 17 K, 20 K, 19 K, 12 K, 3.5 K, 8 K and 6.5 K, respectively. The transition temperatures are smaller compared to their respective parent compounds RNi5. PrNi4Ga is paramagnetic down to 2 K. LaNi4Ga and LuNi4Ga are Pauli paramagnets. All the compounds show thermomagnetic irreversibility in the magnetically ordered state except GdNi4Ga.

Lattice expansion and non-collinear to collinear ferrimagnetic order in MnCr$_2$O$_4$ nanoparticle

We report magnetic behaviour of MnCr$_2$O$_4$, which belongs to a special class of spinel, known as chromite. Bulk MnCr$_2$O$_4$ shows a sequence of magnetic states, which follows paramagnetic (PM) to collinear ferrimagnetic (FM) state below T$_C$ $\sim$ 45 K and collinear FM state to non-collinear FM state below T$_S$ $\sim$ 18 K. The non-collinear spin structure has been modified on decreasing the particle size, and magnetic transition at T$_S$ decreases in nanoparticle samples. However, ferrimagnetic order is still dominating in nanoparticles, except the observation of superparamagnetic like blocking and decrease of spontaneous magnetization for nanoparticle. This may, according to the core-shell model of ferrimagnetic nanoparticle, be the surface disorder effect of nanoparticle. The system also show the increase of T$_C$ in nanoparticle samples, which is not consistent with the core-shell model. The analysis of the M(T) data, applying spin wave theory, has shown an unusual Bloch exponent value 3.35 for bulk MnCr$_2$O$_4$, which decreases and approaches to 1.5, a typical value for any standard ferromagnet, with decreasing the particle size. MnCr$_2$O$_4$ has shown a few more unusual behaviour. For example, lattice expansion in nanoparticle samples. The present work demonstrates the correlation between a systematic increase of lattice parameter and the gradual decrease of B site non-collinear spin structure in the light of magnetism of MnCr$_2$O$_4$ nanoparticles.

Magnetic and Transport Properties of Ternary Indides of type R2CoIn8 (R = Ce, Pr and Dy)

We have synthesized and investigated the magnetic and transport properties of a series of compounds, R2CoIn8 (R = rare earth). Compounds form in single phase with a tetragonal structure (space group P4/mmm, no. 162). The Ce compound shows heavy fermion behavior. The magnetic susceptibility of Pr2CoIn8 shows a marked deviation from the Curie-Weiss behavior at low temperatures, which is attributed to the crystalline electric field effects. Heat capacity and magnetization measurements show that Dy2CoIn8 undergoes a magnetic transition at 17 K and a second transition near 5 K, the latter of which may be due to spin reorientation. Magnetization of this compound shows two metamagnetic transitions approximately at 3.6 T and 8.3 T.

Static magnetic response of clusters in Co_{0.2}Zn_{0.8}Fe_{1.95}Ho_{0.05}O_{4} spinel oxide

Earlier investigation of Co_{0.2}Zn_{0.8}Fe_{1.95}Ho_{0.05}O_{4} spinel has shown the existence of "super-ferromagnetic " clusters containing Fe^{3+} and Ho^{3+} ions along with small size clusters of Fe^{3+} ions (Bhowmik et al, J. Magn. Magn. Mater. {247}, 83 (2002)). Here, We report the static magnetic response of these clusters. The experimental data suggests some interesting magnetic features, such as, enhancement of magnetization; re-entrant magnetic transitions with paramagnetic to ferromagnetic state below 225 K and ferromagnetic to spin glass state below 120 K; appearance of field induced ferromagnetism. We also observe an unusual maximum in the thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) vs temperature data. Our measurements suggest that this unusuality in TRM is related to the blocking of "super-ferromagnetic" clusters ,out of the ferromagnetic state, along their local anisotropy axis.

Tuning of the superconducting and ferromagnetic transitions by Cu doping for Ru in GdSr2RuCu2O8

In order to explore the possibility of tuning superconducting and ferromagnetic transitions by Cu doping (for Ru) in GdSr2RuCu2O8, we have carried out synthesis and characterization of GdSr2Ru{1-x}Cu{2+x)O8 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) and studied their physical properties. Coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism is observed in all the Cu doped samples studied here. The zero field susceptibility data suggests formation of a spontaneous vortex phase. Cu doping decreases the ferromagnetic Curie temperature, whereas the superconducting transition temperature increases until an optimal concentration x~0.1. This reflects an increase in hole transfer to the CuO2 planes and reduction of ferromagnetic order within the ruthenate layers.

Particle size effects in the antiferromagnetic spinel CoRh$_2$O$_4$

We report the particle size dependent magnetic behaviour in the antiferromagnetic spinel CoRh2O4. The nanoparticles were obtained by mechanical milling of bulk material, prepared under sintering method. The XRD spectra show that the samples are retaining the spinel structure. The particle size decreases from 70 nm to 16 nm as the milling time increases from 12 hours to 60 hours. The magnetic measurements suggest that the antiferromagnetic ordering at T$_N$ $\approx$ 27K exists in bulk as well as in nanoparticle samples. However, the magnitude of the magnetization below T$_N$ increases with decreasing particle size.

Magnetic enhancement of Co$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.8}$Fe$_2$O$_4$ spinel oxide by mechanical milling

We report the magnetic properties of mechanically milled Co$_{0.2}$Zn$_{0.8}$Fe$_2$O$_4$ spinel oxide. After 24 hours milling of the bulk sample, the XRD spectra show nanostructure with average particle size $\approx$ 20 nm. The as milled sample shows an enhancement in magnetization and ordering temperature compared to the bulk sample. If the as milled sample is annealed at different temperatures for the same duration, recrystallization process occurs and approaches to the bulk structure on increasing the annealing temperatures. The magnetization of the annealed samples first increases and then decreases. At higher annealing temperature ($\sim$ 1000$^{0}$C) the system shows two coexisting magnetic phases {\it i.e.}, spin glass state and ferrimagnetic state, similar to the as prepared bulk sample. The room temperature Mössbauer spectra of the as milled sample, annealed at 300$^{0}$C for different durations (upto 575 hours), suggest that the observed change in magnetic behaviour is strongly related with cations redistribution between tetrahedral (A) and octahedral (O) sites in the spinel structure. Apart from the cation redistribution, we suggest that the enhancement of magnetization and ordering temperature is related with the reduction of B site spin canting and increase of strain induced anisotropic energy during mechanical milling.

Magnetoresistance in ordered and disordered double perovskite oxide, Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$

We have prepared crystallographically ordered and disorder specimens of the double perovskite, Sr$_2$FeMoO$_6$ and investigated their magnetoresistance behaviour. The extent of ordering between the Fe and Mo sites in the two samples is determined by Rietveld analysis of powder x-ray diffraction patterns and reconfirmed by Mössbauer studies. While the ordered sample exhibits the sharp low-field response, followed by moderate changes in the magnetoresistance at higher fields, the disordered sample is characterised by the absence of the spectacular low-field response. We argue that the low field response depends crucially on the half-metallic ferromagnetism, while the high-field response follows from the overall magnetic nature of the sample, even in absence of the half-metallic state.

Microwave Properties of Borocarbide Superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln = Y, Er, Tm, Ho)

We report measurements of the microwave surface impedance of the borocarbide family of superconductors LnNi2B2C (Ln=Y, Er, Tm, Ho). The experiments enable direct measurements of the superfluid density, and are particularly sensitive to the influence of magnetic pairbreaking. In HoNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is clearly observed at zero field, and leads to a drastic reduction of the superfluid density, which recovers at lower temperatures. In ErNi2B2C the antiferromagnetic transition is not seen in zero field data. Magnetic effects are responsible for anomalies in the low temperature surface impedance below approximately 4K in HoNi2B2C and TmNi2B2C. The temperature dependence of the microwave impedance disagrees with simple BCS calculations.
