Role of thermal and photo annealing on nonlinear optical response of Ge30Se55Bi15 thin films

In this article, we employed nanosecond Z-scan technique to demonstrate the nonlinear optical response in Ge30Se55Bi15 thin films after thermal and photo annealing. The intensity dependent open aperture Z-scan traces reveal that for all the samples, i.e. as-prepared, thermal and photo annealed thin films exhibit reverse saturable absorption (RSA). The experimental results indicate that both thermal and photo annealing can be efficiently used to enhance the nonlinear absorption coefficient compared to as-prepared sample. We further demonstrate that beta value of thermally annealed and as-prepared samples increase significantly at higher intensities. On the contrary, beta for photo annealed sample does not exhibit appreciable changes against the intensity variation.

Quantification of nonlinear absorption in ternary As-Sb-Se chalcogenide glasses

In this article, we studied intensity dependent third order nonlinear optical response in ternary As40Sb7Se53 and As40Sb10Se50 chalcogenide glasses by employing nanosecond Z-scan technique. At low intensity, we observed saturable absorption in As40Sb7Se53 which makes a remarkable transition to reverse saturable absorption at higher intensities. On the other hand, when the Sb concentration increased in As40Sb10Se50, saturable absorption disappears and the sample exhibits only two-photon absorption. Experimental results further indicate that the strong two-photon absorption in our samples can be exploited to fabricate high performance solid state optical limiting devices for next generation all-optical network.

Microstrain induced deviation from Néel's 1/d behaviour: Size-dependent magnetization in Bi1-xCaxFe1-yTiyO3-delta nanoparticles

Magnetization of antiferromagnetic nanoparticles is known to generally scale up inversely to their diameter (d) according to Néel's model. Here we report a deviation from this conventional linear 1/d dependence, altered significantly by the microstrain, in Ca and Ti substituted BiFeO3 nanoparticles. Magnetic properties of microstrain-controlled Bi1-xCaxFe1-yTiyO3-delta (y = 0 and x = y) nanoparticles are analyzed as a function of their size ranging from 18 nm to 200 nm. A complex interdependence of doping concentration (x or y), annealing temperature (T), microstrain (epsilon) and particle size (d) is established. X-ray diffraction studies reveal a linear variation of microstrain with inverse particle size, 1/d nm-1 (i.e. epsilon.d = 16.5 nm.%). A rapid increase in the saturation magnetization below a critical size dc ~ 35 nm, exhibiting a (1/d)^alpha (alpha ~ 2.6) dependence, is attributed to the influence of microstrain. We propose an empirical formula M is proportional to (1/d)epsilon^beta (beta ~ 1.6) to highlight the contributions from both the size and microstrain towards the total magnetization in the doped systems. The magnetization observed in nanoparticles is thus, a result of competing magnetic contribution from the terminated spin cycloid on the surface and counteracting microstrain present at a given size. Large magnetodielectric response of ~ 9.5 % is observed in spark plasma sintered pellets with optimal size and doping concentration, revealing a strong correlation between magnetic and ferroelectric order parameters.

Influence of excitation frequency on Raman modes of In1-xGaxN thin films

Low energy optical modes of MBE-grown In1-xGaxN thin films with different values of x are investigated using Raman spectroscopy. We also studied the influence of Raman excitation frequency using red and green lasers on scattering intensity of various Raman modes. For those In1-xGaxN alloys whose bandgap energy is close to the red laser, a huge enhancement in the intensities of A1(LO) mode and its 2A1(LO) replica is observed when excited with red laser as compared to the green laser excitation. We found that the energies of longitudinal optical modes (A1 (LO) and 2A1 (LO)) vary nonlinearly unlike the E2 mode with increasing Ga atomic fraction. A Raman mode ~ 540 cm-1 was observed in all In1-xGaxN films with low energy red laser excitation but was absent with green laser excitation. We attribute this mode to A1(TO) mode of the underneath GaN buffer layer.

In-Plane Magnetic Field Tolerance of a Dispersive Aluminum Nanobridge SQUID Magnetometer

We characterize the flux sensitivity of a dispersive 3D aluminum nanobridge SQUID magnetometer as a function of applied in-plane magnetic field. In zero field, we observe an effective flux noise of 17 n$Φ_0$/Hz$^{1/2}$ with 25 MHz of bandwidth. Flux noise increased by less than a factor of three with parallel magnetic fields up to 61 mT. Operation in higher fields may be possible by decreasing the dimensions of the shunt capacitor in the magnetometer circuit. These devices are thus well suited for observing high-speed dynamics in nanoscale magnets, even in the presence of moderate bias magnetic fields.

Quantum feedback control of a superconducting qubit: Persistent Rabi oscillations

The act of measurement bridges the quantum and classical worlds by projecting a superposition of possible states into a single, albeit probabilistic, outcome. The time-scale of this "instantaneous" process can be stretched using weak measurements so that it takes the form of a gradual random walk towards a final state. Remarkably, the interim measurement record is sufficient to continuously track and steer the quantum state using feedback. We monitor the dynamics of a resonantly driven quantum two-level system -- a superconducting quantum bit --using a near-noiseless parametric amplifier. The high-fidelity measurement output is used to actively stabilize the phase of Rabi oscillations, enabling them to persist indefinitely. This new functionality shows promise for fighting decoherence and defines a path for continuous quantum error correction.

Ferromagnetism and spin polarized charge carriers in In$_{2}$O$_{3}$ thin films

We present evidence for spin polarized charge carriers in In$_2$O$_3$ films. Both In$_2$O$_3$ and Cr doped In$_2$O$_3$ films exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism after vacuum annealing, with a saturation moment of approximately 0.5 emu/cm$^3$. We used Point Contact Andreev Reflection measurements to directly determine the spin polarization, which was found to be approximately 50$\pm$5% for both compositions. These results are consistent with suggestions that the ferromagnetism observed in certain oxide semiconductors may be carrier mediated.

Electric field control of magnetic phase transitions in Ni3V2O8

We report on the electric field control of magnetic phase transition temperatures in multiferroic Ni3V2O8 thin films. Using magnetization measurements, we find that the phase transition temperature to the canted antiferromagnetic state is suppressed by 0.2 K in an electric field of 30 MV/m, as compared to the unbiased sample. Dielectric measurements show that the transition temperature into the magnetic state associated with ferroelectric order increases by 0.2 K when the sample is biased at 25 MV/m. This electric field control of the magnetic transitions can be qualitatively understood using a mean field model incorporating a tri-linear coupling between the magnetic order parameters and spontaneous polarization.

Positive and negative magnetocapacitance in magnetic nanoparticle systems

The dielectric properties of MnFe$_2$O$_4$ and $γ$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ magnetic nanoparticles embedded in insulating matrices were investigated. The samples showed frequency dependent dielectric anomalies coincident with the magnetic blocking temperature and significant magnetocapacitance above this blocking temperature, as large as 0.4% at H = 10kOe. For both samples the magnetic field induced change in dielectric constant was proportional to the square of the sample magnetization. These measurements suggest that the dielectric properties of magnetic nanoparticles are closely related to the disposition of magnetic moments in the system. As neither bulk gamma-Fe2O3 nor MnFe2O3 are magnetoelectric materials, this magnetodielectric coupling is believed to arise from extrinsic effects which are discussed in light of recent work relating magnetoresistive and magnetocapacitive behavior.

Ferromagnetism at 300 K in spin-coated anatasea and rutile Ti0.95Fe0.05O2 films

Thin films of Ti1-xFexO2 (x=0 and 0.05) have been prepared on sapphire substrates by spin-on technique starting from metal organic precursors. When heat treated in air at 550 and 700 degrees C respectively, these films present pure anatase and rutile structures as shown both by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Optical absorption indicate a high degree of transparency in the visible region. Such films show a very small magnetic moment at 300 K. However, when the anatase and the rutile films are annealed in a vacuum of 1x10-5 Torr at 500 degrees C and 600 degrees C respectively, the magnetic moment, at 300 K, is strongly enhanced reaching 0.46 $μ$B/Fe for the anatase sample and 0.48 $μ$B/Fe for the rutile one. The ferromagnetic Curie temperature of these samples is above 350 K.
