Chiral symmetry breaking at large N_c

We present numerical evidence for the hypothesis that, in the planar limit, four dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills theory on a finite symmetrical four-torus breaks chiral symmetry spontaneously when the length of the sides l is larger than a critical value l_c with a bilinear condensate whose value is independent of l. Therefore spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs at finite volume and infinite N_c reduction holds for the chiral condensate.

Analysis of finite temperature phase transition using level spacing

Let B be the largest spacing between adjacent eigenvalues of the Polyakov loop. We propose to employ the distribution of B as an order parameter for the finite temperature phase transition in SU(N) lattice gauge theories. Using smeared links to reduce ultraviolet fluctuations, we carry out a test for the gauge group SU(3).

Does the crossover from perturbative to nonperturbative physics in QCD become a phase transition at infinite N ?

We present numerical evidence that, in the planar limit, four dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills theory undergoes a phase transition on a finite symmetrical four-torus when the length of the sides $l$ decreases to a critical value $l_c$. For $l>l_c$ continuum reduction holds so that at leading order in $N$, there are no finite size effects in Wilson and Polyakov loops. This produces the exciting possibility of solving numerically for the meson sector of planar QCD at a cost substantially smaller than that of quenched SU(3).

Large N reduction in the continuum three dimensional Yang-Mills theory

Numerical and theoretical evidence leads us to propose the following: Three dimensional Euclidean Yang-Mills theory in the planar limit undergoes a phase transition on a torus of side $l=l_c$. For $l>l_c$ the planar limit is $l$-independent, as expected of a non-interacting string theory. We expect the situation in four dimensions to be similar.

Strong Enhancement of Superconducting T_c in Ferromagnetic Phases

It is shown that the critical temperature for spin-triplet, p-wave superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations is generically much higher in a Heisenberg ferromagnetic phase than in a paramagnetic one, due to the coupling of the magnons to the longitudinal magnetic susceptibility. Together with the tendency of the low-temperature ferromagnetic transition in very clean Heisenberg magnets to be of first order, this qualitatively explains the phase diagram recently observed in UGe_2.

Proposal for the numerical solution of planar QCD

Using quenched reduction, we propose a method for the numerical calculation of meson correlation functions in the planar limit of QCD. General features of the approach are outlined, and an example is given in the context of two-dimensional QCD.

Superconductivity and Quantum Phase Transitions in Weak Itinerant Ferromagnets

It is argued that the phase transition in low-T_c clean itinerant ferromagnets is generically of first order, due to correlation effects that lead to a nonanalytic term in the free energy. A tricritical point separates the line of first order transitions from Heisenberg critical behavior at higher temperatures. Sufficiently strong quenched disorder suppresses the first order transition via the appearance of a critical endpoint. A semi-quantitative discussion is given in terms of recent experiments on MnSi and UGe_2. It is then shown that the critical temperature for spin-triplet, p-wave superconductivity mediated by spin fluctuations is generically much higher in a Heisenberg ferromagnetic phase than in a paramagnetic one, due to the coupling of magnons to the longitudinal magnetic susceptibility. This qualitatively explains the phase diagram recently observed in UGe_2 and ZrZn_2.

Transport Anomalies and Marginal Fermi-Liquid Effects at a Quantum Critical Point

The conductivity and the tunneling density of states of disordered itinerant electrons in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic transition at low temperature are discussed. Critical fluctuations lead to nonanalytic frequency and temperature dependences that are distinct from the usual long-time tail effects in a disordered Fermi liquid. The crossover between these two types of behavior is proposed as an experimental check of recent theories of the quantum ferromagnetic critical behavior. In addition, the quasiparticle properties at criticality are shown to be those of a marginal Fermi liquid.

Transport Anomalies and Marginal Fermi-Liquid Effects at a Quantum Critical Point

The behavior of the conductivity and the density of states, as well as the phase relaxation time, of disordered itinerant electrons across a quantum ferromagnetic transition is discussed. It is shown that critical fluctuations lead to anomalies in the temperature and energy dependence of the conductivity and the tunneling density of states, respectively, that are stronger than the usual weak-localization anomalies in a disordered Fermi liquid. This can be used as an experimental probe of the quantum critical behavior. The energy dependence of the phase relaxation time at criticality is shown to be that of a marginal Fermi liquid.

Exact local fermionic zero modes

We introduce a simple method to find localized exact fermionic zero modes for any local fermionic action. The zero modes are attached to specific local gauge configurations. Examples are provided for staggered and Wilson fermion actions in 2-6 dimensions, at finite and infinite lattice volumes, and for abelian and non-abelian gauge groups. One of our concrete results is that a finite density of almost zero modes must occur in quenched four dimensional lattice gauge theory simulations that use traditional methods. This density is exponentially suppressed in the gauge coupling constant.

An alternative to domain wall fermions

We define a sparse hermitian lattice Dirac matrix, $H$, coupling $2n+1$ Dirac fermions. When $2n$ fermions are integrated out the induced action for the last fermion is a rational approximation to the hermitian overlap Dirac operator. We provide rigorous bounds on the condition number of $H$ and compare them to bounds for the higher dimensional Dirac operator of domain wall fermions. Our main conclusion is that overlap fermions should be taken seriously as a practical alternative to domain wall fermions in the context of numerical QCD.

The Overlap-Dirac Operator: Topology and Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We review the spectral flow techniques for computing the index of the overlap Dirac operator including results relevant for SUSY Yang-Mills theories. We describe properties of the overlap Dirac operator, and methods to implement it numerically. We use the results from the spectral flow to illuminate the difficulties in numerical calculations involving domain wall and overlap fermions.

Quantum critical behavior of itinerant ferromagnets

We investigate the quantum phase transition of itinerant ferromagnets. It is shown that correlation effects in the underlying itinerant electron system lead to singularities in the order parameter field theory that result in an effective long-range interaction between the spin fluctuations. This interaction turns out to be generically {\em antiferromagnetic} for clean systems. In disordered systems analogous correlation effects lead to even stronger singularities. The resulting long-range interaction is, however, generically ferromagnetic. We discuss two possibilities for the ferromagnetic quantum phase transition. In clean systems, the transition is generically of first order, as is experimentally observed in MnSi. However, under certain conditions the transition may be continuous with non-mean field critical behavior. In disordered systems, one finds a very rich phase diagram showing first order and continuous phase transitions and several multicritical points.

Rare regions and annealed disorder in quantum phase transitions

The Griffiths region that is due to rare regions and the resulting local moments in disordered itinerant quantum magnets, and its influence on the critical behavior, is considered within the framework of an effective field theory. It is shown that the local moments can be described in terms of static, annealed disorder, and the physical consequences of this description are discussed.

On the critical behavior of disordered quantum magnets: The relevance of rare regions

The effects of quenched disorder on the critical properties of itinerant quantum antiferromagnets and ferromagnets are considered. Particular attention is paid to locally ordered spatial regions that are formed in the presence of quenched disorder even when the bulk system is still in the paramagnetic phase. These rare regions or local moments are reflected in the existence of spatially inhomogeneous saddle points of the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson functional. We derive an effective theory that takes into account small fluctuations around all of these saddle points. The resulting free energy functional contains a new term in addition to those obtained within the conventional perturbative approach, and it comprises what would be considered non-perturbative effects within the latter. A renormalization group analysis shows that in the case of antiferromagnets, the previously found critical fixed point is unstable with respect to this new term, and that no stable critical fixed point exists at one-loop order. This is contrasted with the case of itinerant ferromagnets, where we find that the previously found critical behavior is unaffected by the rare regions due to an effective long-ranged interaction between the order parameter fluctuations.

Finite-Volume Scaling of the Quenched Chiral Condensate

In the large-volume limit $V\to\infty$ with $V << 1/m_π^4$ the mass-dependent chiral condensate is predicted to satisfy exact finite-volume scaling laws that fall into three major universality classes. We test these analytical predictions with staggered fermions and overlap fermions in gauge field sectors of fixed topological charge $ν$.
